Never Been A CowboyI have written a lot about cowboys, though a cowboy I have never been

But, I have dreamed, throughout the yearsI would have liked to have lived back then

Just me and my horse, and my six gun of course, strapped down to my sideSpurs and chaps, and cowboy hats, in the saddle and ready to ride

Riding point, on the ‘Chisholm Trail’, an outrider on a spirited nagOr eating dust, as cowboys must, following up on drag

I look at being a cowboy, in a romantic sort of wayBut, until you have been in their boots, really who’s to say

A cowboy’s life wasn’t easy, it sure was no walk in the parkThey were up in the saddle by daylight, and never got down until dark

A cowboy’s life was a hard life, but they had their good times tooIf there was one thing they had in common, they loved it through and through

They had no book of written rules, they just lived it day to dayTo be a bon-a-fide cowboy, you had to live the cowboy’s wayLike, heading off a stampede, on a thunderous, stormy night

Then falling asleep in the saddle, when things were going right

Or strumming a worn out guitar, and singing a cowboy’s songLate at night, in the pale moonlight, to keep them doggies calm

No, I have never been a cowboy, but if a cowboy I could beI would have me a pretty little cowgirl, riding right next to me

And maybe we could make, a little buckaroo, heck maybe two or threeAnd we could raise them to be cowboys and cowgirls, just like mom and meWe could all sit around the campfire at night, and listen to the coyotes howl

Nope, I have never been a cowboy, but I sure wish I was one right now

Ride hard and God bless. We will see ya down the road!

Eighteen years, can you believe it! The Feb. 15th and 16th NFPB bull ride in Sedalia, MO, marked the eighteenth year of putting on a bull ride in one place. For the last eighteen years, its been a tradition of cowboys, fans, and sponsors to come together for a spectacular event. The town talks about it everywhere you go. When they see cowboy hats and lots of cowboy trucks coming into town, they know what is about to happen Friday and Saturday night. Thirty-six of the best bull riders from across the country come out to meet up with old and new friends. Clint Jackson and Frank Walkowe put on one of the top notch bull rides around. I’m not knocking any of the others around, but these two guys have been doing this for a good long time, so they must be doing something right. Some of the bull ridings you go to may have a high number of turn outs, cowboys not showing up due to not liking the bull they may have gotten. Some of them forget, that’s why they call it the luck of the draw, and there were NO bad draws here. Some may have said they got a bad draw of a bull, but the bulls were doing their job this weekend, and that they did. Scores ranged from 78 to 90 with two rerides. This was a good pen of bulls.

Each night had a draw of different cowboys, some entering both nights, or just one night. While they were paying their fees, they were catching up with each other. Asking each other how their winter was, where were they last time, what bull did they have. It’s like a big bull riding family reunion, from the bull riding staff to the bull riders. Each of the cowboys and staff were treated to a complementary meal where stories were told around the table as they ate. While they were eating, there were pony rides for the fans’ kids to get the feel of what it is like to ride a horse or pony in a bull riding arena. This was a huge success, kids lined up along the fence with big open eyes, getting to see a horse maybe for the first time, or even the first time to get a chance to actually ride a horse. There were some of the kids that were so excited to see the horse, but when it was time to actually get on, well that was another story. There was NO way they were going to get on, but some did, and in their faces you could see, they were really NOT happy about being on the back of a horse. As the event started each night, the flags of all the major sponsors were ran around the arena under spot lights to highlight and thank

each sponsor. With out the sponsors these events wouldn’t happen. While the lights were still out, the American flag was brought in the arena, going around the outer ring of the arena. After the National Anthem and the prayer, it was show time; lights came back up and the music started. On a side note, before the lights went out there were a few empty seats around the arena, but when the lights came back up, it was standing room only! The fans were ready for a great night and their gate ticket monies worth! No where else in town could you get that much entertainment for the price of the ticket. The crowd was also entertained by the funny man Shawn ‘Boom Boom’ Thompson. But the real action was in the arena after the chute gates were open. The bulls were bucking, the crowd was screaming as the riders were spurring the bulls they rode, competing to get the highest score of the night for the long go. The bull riders knew they had to get the best score possible to make it back to the short go, as only six riders were to be brought back to the short go. Casey Coulter for example, was one of the riders to get a score of 84 pts. For part of the entertainment of the night, they had a mutton busting competition for 10 mutton busters that were picked in a draw. This is a fan favorite, watching the future bull riders hanging on the backs of sheep to see if they can cover their ride. After the little riders were finished, it was back to the bull riding, the short go. They bucked 3 bulls, Cole Bass was the first one to come bucking out of the chutes on Friday nights round. Then they stopped the bull riding for the next part of the nights entertainment. Once again the fans were getting their monies worth for the price of the ticket. It was time for Cowboy Poker, bull riding style. Four “Cowboys” were sat at a table in front of the out gate. You should have seen the look in their eyes, they were wondering what was going to happen next. They loaded the chute with the poker bull. This bull came out of the chutes and was on a mission to play poker, and this he did. The bull hit the first cowboy, getting him out of his chair, then made several passes around the arena and set his sights on the remaining cowboys sitting at the table. After all was said and done, there was only one winner. The crowd went crazy! Then it was back to the last three riders of the night to see who was going to win a new pair of spurs and the paycheck at the end of the ride.

When the dust settled, the Friday night winner was Casey Coulter, and on Saturday night the winner was Mason Ormesher. This shows that the NFPB puts on a great event, to have a night out and have a good time for the fans, sponsors, cowboys, and NFPB.

The 2013 rodeo schedule in California officially starts with the 92nd Red Bluff Round Up making its yearly debut on the third weekend in April. The Red Bluff Round Up is a part of the Wrangler Million Dollar Silver Tour, and approximately $180,000 is given away in prize money throughout the three days. The 92nd Red Bluff Round Up will be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 19, 20 and 21st. Some of the great highlights of the Red Bluff Round Up include the traditional fly by from Navy jets, out of Miramar, CA, buzzing the arena as the National Anthem is sung by a local recording artist. Besides traditional rodeo events, the Red Bluff Round Up also has the wild horse races and the yearly “Wild Ride” where saddle bronc riders are dressed up in costume and are judged not only by how long they are able to stay on their bucking bronc, but how elaborate the costume is that they are dressed in. Roy Johnson of Etna, CA, won last years ride, dressed in a pink tutu and a wig, complete with a wooden guitar in hand. For this years rodeo, Nashville Recording Artist, Neal McCoy, will also be present to entertain the crowd Saturday evening in the Pauline Davis Pavilion. The Red Bluff Round Up is a PRCA rodeo. More information and tickets are available by visiting their website at www.redbluffroundup.com.

May 11th and 12th, the small town of Cottonwood, CA, will hold their 51st Cottonwood Mother’s Day rodeo, complete with events leading up to rodeo weekend including Ladies Nite Out, a Kick Off Barbeque and Kidde Parade, along with the traditional rodeo parade that runs through Old Town Cottonwood towards the rodeo grounds. The Cottonwood Rodeo is one of 36 of the rodeos sanctioned by the CCPRA (California Cowboys Professional Rodeo Association). The rodeo is held at the legendary Bobby Jones Arena, which was built one piece at a time using parts and pieces that five determined young men originally gathered together to build a practice arena. Bull, bareback and saddlebronc riders are a big draw to this rodeo from around California, riding stock by Four Star Rodeo and the Davis Family of Cottonwood.

The following week is the 65th Annual Redding Rodeo, which is also a part of the Wrangler Million Dollar Silver Rodeo Series and averages over $180,000 prize money to it’s contestants. The Redding Rodeo kicks off on Saturday, May 11th with the steak feed, followed by Heritage Days, Special Rodeo, Chicks and Chaps, the legendary pancake breakfast put on by the Asphalt Cowboys, a rodeo parade, along with two days of slack events during the week. This will qualify timed event riders for the night performances that are being held this year on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, May 15-17th. Saturday, May 18th, Redding will kick off the Inaugural Champions Challenge event where the top eight in each event return to ride in all of the events for a larger prize purse. There are four rodeos around the United States that will be taking part in this event during the 2013 season. An additional $80,000 is up for grabs during this part of the rodeo.

“After Redding Rodeo, the Champions Challenge will make stops in Amarillo, TX (Sept. 18), Kissimmee, FL (Oct. 5), and Winnie, TX (Oct. 30). All four dates will be aired in a one hour format at a later date on Great American Country TV. The Redding Performance will be broadcast on July 7 at 2 pm and July 13 at 6 am,” said rodeo officials. Soon-to-be father earns big check in Rapid City

RAPID CITY, SD – There’s nothing like an expanding family to inspire a guy to dig a little deeper. Bareback rider, Mac Erickson, can tell you a little bit about that after coming out of nowhere on Feb. 2 to win the bareback riding on the final night of the Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. The second man out in the Saturday night lineup, the Sundance, WY, cowboy, was mounted on a bucking horse named Black Hills (probably a good omen) and vaulted to the top of the leader board with an 86-point ride, an effort that proved one point better than four-time World Champion Bobby Mote and Steven Dent, who tied for second. “I didn’t know much about the horse, but she turned out to be everything you want in a bucking horse,” Erickson, 27, told the Rapid City Journal. “I know my wife is here and we have a baby boy going to join us in April, so this is big. Winning here really helps a bunch and will help me to get down the road.” The other roughstock events also saw changes to the top of the leader board on the final night of this $199,294 rodeo, with Tyler Corrington tying home-state favorite, Jeremy Meeks, for the saddle bronc riding title and veteran bull rider, Beau Hill, completing a 91-point ride on Burch Rodeo Company’s Zombie Zoo to dislodge Nevada Newman from the top spot. “I had that horse (C5 Rodeo’s Biff) in Cheyenne, WY, last year,” Corrington said, “and he got 23 on both sides, so I

knew I had my hands full. I knew I had to be aggressive and it felt like I got a little loose a couple times, but I kept going after him and it worked out. That was fun.” The judges rewarded him with a score of 86 points, which equaled Meeks’ effort earlier in the week on Sutton Rodeo’s Time Rental. It was Meeks’ first rodeo appearance of the year, having spent the last few months home in Belle Fourche, SD, tending cattle and spending time with family. Hill completed the roughstock sweep by handling Zombie Zoo, the bull who bucked off World Champion, Cody Teel, in Round 9 of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo last December in four seconds and had a 92 percent buck-off rate last season. “That bull has been one of the rankest bulls around here for the last few years,” Hill said. “He bucked me off a couple of years ago in Red Lodge, MT, so it felt good to get him back tonight. I won fourth in Denver last week and am heading to Disneyland with the kids in about six days, so it’s good.” According to ProBullStats.com, it was the 13th score of 90 points or more in Hill’s career and he managed it despite a sprained left (riding) wrist that he injured the week before in Denver.

Pelican State doubles prove elusive Louisiana cowboys, Winn First Ratliff and Heith DeMoss, don’t get that many chances to compete near home during a ProRodeo season, so they appreciate the chance to show off a little bit in front of friends and family, as they did over the weekend. Ratliff, a 23-year-old bareback rider from Leesville who made his Wrangler NFR debut in December, lived up to his name by winning first in the SW District Fat Stock Show & Rodeo in Lake Charles, LA, with an 86-point ride on Korkow Rodeos’ Satin Sheets. He also finished in a three-way tie for second at the Stampede at the Ike in West Monroe, LA. DeMoss, of Heflin, LA, reversed that scenario, winning in West Monroe with an 84-pointer on Classic Pro Rodeo’s Fire Lake and then tying for second place with his brother, Cody, in Lake Charles, losing out to 19-year-old rookie, Ty Kirkland, of Lufkin, TX, who had an 87-point ride on Korkow Rodeos’ Matrix. It was Kirkland’s first title as a card holder; he had five wins last year on his permit while earning $9,439. Ratliff and DeMoss weren’t the only contestants to just miss out on a Pelican State double. Steer wrestler, Drew Slade of Brooklyn, Miss., won in Lake Charles with a 3.5-second run and was second to Chase Hammons in West Monroe, while bull rider, Brant Atwood of Granbury, TX, had an 89-point ride on Frontier Rodeo Company’s Mask of Zorro to tie Eli Vastbinder for the win in Lake Charles and tied for second in West Monroe, four behind Friday Wright II’s 87-pointer on Classic Pro Rodeo’s Space Chimp. Wright had his top mark despite the effects of a sprained left thumb. Finally back to something like full health after a broken right (riding) hand and a hip injury decimated his 2012 season, bull rider, Clayton Foltyn, seems ready to make another run at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Foltyn’s win at the Feb. 1-3 Los Fresnos, TX, PRCA Rodeo, with an 89-point ride on Brookman-Hyland Rodeo’s Damn It’s Good, was his first in a PRCA rodeo in 18 months – since July 30, 2011 in Helena, MT. The $3,363 check he earned was his biggest since the 2011 WNFR.

Field vs. Feild: It’s no contest FORT WORTH, TX – It’s just about at the point where taking the bareback riding field to beat Kaycee Feild in the Will Rogers Coliseum is a fool’s bet. The two-time reigning world champion has won the Fort Worth Stock Show Rodeo three of the last four years with a stunning bit of consistency. He put up a score of 334 points to win in 2010, shared the title with Will Lowe a year ago with 323 points and closed out his win at this year’s 117th edition of the rodeo on Feb. 9 with 333 points, five ahead of runner-up Ryan Gray. That’s an average score of 82.5 points on 12 horses over the course of those three winning efforts, no matter what he drew. “If you can pull a check on a horse nobody has pulled a check on since he was a colt, it says a lot,” Feild told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “If you can spur a horse better than anybody, you’re going to win the money.”

Case in point? In the first round, Feild drew Wind Walker, a Mo Betta horse who has averaged 75 points for the cowboys who have successfully stayed on him during his career, and yet Feild performed well enough to draw a score of 78 points from the judges. It left him one point shy of a check in that first round, but satisfied. “If you can make a 22-point spur ride on a 16-point arm-jerker bronc that everybody has been turning out on, then it shows your determination and grit,” Feild said. Given better matchups in subsequent rounds, Feild prospered. He won the second round with an 85-point ride on Andrews Rodeo’s Cool Water, tied for second in the third round and then tied Gray for the win in the finals with an 88-pointer on JK Rodeo’s Brother. His total earnings of $11,636 in Fort Worth was second only to saddle bronc riding champion Cody Wright among PRCA cowboys; Wright finished with $11,689 after edging Will Smith in the three-head-average (236-235). “When you are consistent on every horse in the way you spur,” Feild said, “you have lots of eye appeal.”

Woolsey regains elite form at Seminole Classic OKEECHOBEE, FL – From Steve Woolsey’s point of view, drawing Robinson Pro Rodeo’s I’m Back could be taken as a good omen on a couple of scores. For openers, the bull had just, a day earlier, taken Clint Craig to a win at the Brighton Field Day Festival & Rodeo – in the same arena – and “I’m Back” is exactly the message Woolsey was hoping to deliver at the Feb. 17 Seminole Classic. “I had a pretty good look at that bull the day before because I helped Clint get on him,” Woolsey said. “I pulled his rope. I knew I had a pretty good chance to score well when I saw I’d drawn him. I was really very lucky with both my draws.” Woolsey improved on Craig’s effort by a half-point in winning the first round of this $47,470 Xtreme Bulls Tour event with an 88.5-point ride on Robinson’s bull. He then came right back to win the short go with a 90-pointer on Wild Card Rodeo’s Little Shyster to secure his first PRCA title in 17 months and his first Xtreme Bulls title since he won in Laughlin, NV, in May 2009. Woolsey’s total score of 178.5 points gave him a 10.5-point margin over Corey Navarre in second place and paid him a total of $14,526 – just a bit less than the $17,764 that he earned during all of his injury-plagued 2012 season. A 1,500-pound bull stepped on him at a PRCA event in Rapid City, SD, last winter and Woolsey underwent groin surgery in Philadelphia last March. “The bull forced me down into a sort of splits,” Woolsey said, “so I looked like a wishbone. My groin muscle just pulled right off the bone.” Woolsey didn’t return to competition until the Reno Rodeo in June and missed qualifying for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo last season for the first time in five years and just the second time in his eight-year PRCA career. The hard part was that he worked so hard from June through mid-September with so little return. He went to 70 rodeos and ended up with his lowest earnings total for a season by more than $50,000. “Everybody who goes down the rodeo road is competitive and wants to win, and when I came back I basically went to everything,” Woolsey said. “In hindsight, I probably should have been more selective … pick and choose a little bit more.” He conceded the obvious – that the NFR was out of reach – and went home after the rodeo in Lewiston, ID, Sept. 6-8, to rest for more than a month. That strategic retreat started paying real dividends here at the Fred Smith Arena. “The groin has been pretty good since the first of the year,” Woolsey said, “and it’s been mostly a matter of getting stronger, getting back in good riding shape. This (win) felt great. It was a long time coming.” Navarre finished fourth in the long round with a score of 85.5 points and tied for third in the finals with 82.5 points for a total of 168 points. Reigning World Champion Cody Teel was third with 167.5 points, followed by Chris Roundy with 162.5. They were the only four contestants with two qualified rides.

If you want to get a peek at the up-and-coming stars of professional rodeo, go check out a college rodeo. Having gone to a university in the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association’s Central Plains region, and still living within its geographical area, it is the circuit with which I am the most familiar. I went to Kansas State University, which remains the home of my favorite college rodeo. For me, there’s lots of nostalgia in KSU’s Webber Arena. Even though it happened more than 20 years ago, I still have great memories of working the turnout gate at that rodeo, releasing animals in the timed event chute at another, and all of the indoor and outdoor cleanup that followed. The annual K-State rodeo was held last weekend, and not surprising to me, the top three teams were Fort Scott Community College, Southwestern Oklahoma State University and Panhandle State University. Even back when I was going to school, those seemed to be the teams that were the most dominating, despite the fact that they had smaller enrollments than many of the other schools in the region. Fort Scott had the best bareback riders, Panhandle had the best saddle bronc riders, while SWOSU had the most well-rounded team. The most current stats seem to back up the thought that things haven’t changed that much, even though there have been coaching changes since that time. During the 2013 edition of the K-State rodeo, Fort Scott’s Blaine Kaufman came out on top. After a stellar high school career at Pretty Prairie High School in Kansas, Kaufman has gone on to be one of the nation’s premiere collegiate bareback riders. He has also done well as a PRCA permit holder,

and is already becoming a fixture at the Ram Prairie Circuit Finals Rodeo. I’ve heard quite a few people say he will be going to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo someday. We’ll have to wait at least another year, I would guess, because the Greyhound sophomore told me last summer he was going to wait until after he got his associate’s degree before getting his card, although he is already well-qualified to get it now. Looking down the results, Fort Scott also had the No. 3, 6 and 8 bareback riders at K-State, plus No. 2 Yance Day, is a SWOSU student who incidentally transferred from Fort Scott. Dodge City and Garden City community colleges each also had a successful competitor in the bares. Fort Scott also had the winning saddle bronc rider at Manhattan as Cody Hamm had the winning ride. Like Kaufman, Hamm has already made a name for himself in the professional ranks as a former Prairie Circuit Finals qualifier. However, Panhandle has far from lost its grip as the saddle bronc riding capital of the world. The No. 2 through 6 riders were from Panhandle State, as well another rider who tied for seventh with Fort Scott’s Jade Blackwell. The bull riding had a diverse mix of schools with riders earning points for their team. Panhandle’s Jeff Bertus had the winning effort, with SWOSU’s Jeremey Barnhill coming in second. Fort Scott had three successful riders in the mix and Connors State was also represented among the top riders. For those people who like to watch college basketball, you’ve probably seen those ads that encourage NCAA athletes to complete their degrees. One day they will nearly all be professionals in something other than sports. The same could be said about the athletes in the NIRA,

but you will most certainly see some of these guys shine at the professional level, in one way or another. Not long ago, I stumbled upon a newspaper story I wrote after covering the Pratt Community College rodeo back in the mid-90s. The headline highlighted PCC’s Matt Williams, who won the bull riding competition and also placed in a round of bareback riding. Williams is now making a name for himself as one of the industry’s leading livestock contractors. Further down in the article, I read that one of the top saddle bronc riders at the rodeo was Rance Bray, who went on to compete at two Wrangler National Finals Rodeos. About a decade later, I was covering the PCC rodeo for another publication, and I interviewed a Western Oklahoma State bull rider after he won the short round there. He was a bit quiet, and I thought to myself he must not be a speech major, but his riding spoke for itself. That quiet guy was Trevor Kastner, now a two time WNFR bull rider who already looks poised for his third straight berth. At that same rodeo, the top saddle bronc rider was Garden City’s Cort Scheer, who later attended Panhandle State and made it to a pair of WNFRs. Probably the best bronc riding photo I ever took was of Scheer’s ride at PCC, but danged if I can fi nd it on my computer or as a print. During other trips to Manhattan and Pratt, I’ve had the privilege to see guys like future two-time world champion saddle bronc rider Taos Muncy, multi-time Linderman Award winner Trell Etbauer, and Toughest Cowboy reality television show winner Bandy Murphy, just to name a few that I remember. I’ve always respected professional rodeo cowboys for their abilities and their success. But the ones who got an education while honing their rodeo skills are ones I respect just a little bit more. Get out and support your college rodeo teams, keep your day sheets, and pull them out in another fi ve years. You might be surprised by who you once saw.

Two record albums plus a career in rodeo equals one amazing life story. Meet Johnny Roberts – a recording artist who had a rodeo career as a bull, bareback and saddlebronc rider. After a colorful life, Roberts moved to Palo Cedro, CA, but grew up on a four-generation ranch in west Texas. He worked on the horse side of the operation and started riding when he was old enough to walk. Roberts was a tall lanky kid, perfect for riding horses, but in 1962, he began exclusively riding bulls on the rodeo circuit in open bull ridings. By age 16, Roberts filled his Rodeo Cowboys Association (RCA) card and was on his way to the pros by the time the 1963 season started. “In 1967, people asked me why I wasn’t riding bareback horses, since being on a horse without a saddle was a way of life for me,” said Roberts. He took the bait and began riding bareback horses at rodeos along with bulls. Roberts’ favorite place to ride was in Norco, CA, because each time he rode there, he took home the money. He became one of a handful of cowboys to win the championship three years in a row. “Riding in Norco was like playing a slot machine,” Roberts recalled. “I knew I was always

going to take home a check.” While growing up, Roberts learned how to play the guitar and sing, which turned into a second career of sorts. In 1969, Roberts put his budding rodeo career on hold to record and release his first album under Capital Records titled “Country Fever.” A year later, in 1970, Roberts released his second album, “Music City Blues.” His first album was the most successful because his second album was self-produced. Roberts was shuffled around three different labels before finding one that wanted to take him on as an artist.A short time later, Roberts

was back out on the road hitting three to nine rodeos per week, including open rodeos and others from different professional organizations around the United States. “Over the years, I don’t think there was a rodeo association that I didn’t ride in,” said Roberts. “To this day, I could still go to any state in the union and know people that I rode with when I was younger.” Being out on the road traveling was also another way of life and many memories were made, recalled Roberts. He had about 20 traveling partners at a time. They slept in the same beds, wore the same clothes, dated the same girls and ate off of the same plates. “While we were out on the road away from home, we were each other’s family,” Roberts explained. “We

made life long friendships and great memories, camaraderie and personal relationships. Being in the music business and traveling was the same way, forming the bond of a family.” After retiring, in 1984, from rodeo and work as a musician, Roberts returned to the ranch to live a quiet life. However, Roberts recently made the decision to come back to music and is spending time in the small town of Palo Cedro. He sings at a local bar, the Red Rock Bar and Grill, and is recording his third album, which he has dreamed of completing for many years. Every other weekend, he plays for a packed house of local cowboys and cowgirls. Many come from miles away just to hear this cowboy sing a mix of old and new songs he has written, as well as cover songs from some of the crowd’s favorite artists.Photo courtesy of Johnny Roberts
