Astudy conducted in UK inNovember 2013 foundwomen to be more altruistic

than men with regard to charityand volunteering because theywere more empathic and find iteasier to see the world through theeyes of other people. While statisti-cal data to prove which sex is moregenerous in India might not beavailable, it would not be wrong tosay that Indian women, especiallymothers will not think twice to giveup on anything for their loved ones.Be it their career, money, propertyor even their organs. It has beenfound that at Narmada KidneyFoundation (NKF), more than 70per cent of the active transplant pa-tients have got a kidney from a ladydonor.Dr. Bharat Shah, Founder of NKF

and Director of Institute of RenalSciences, Global Hospital said, “Iwent through the data at NKF andfound out that out of the 369 trans-plant patients following upwithmesince 1990, 76 per cent had got akidney from a woman. This is howgivingwomen are. They don't thinktwice before helping their familymembers”, said Dr. Shah.On World Kidney Day today

(March 13), the ADC gets you sto-ries of elderly mothers who do-nated their kidneys to theirchildren and of a daughter whoowes the life she is leading today tohermother who at the age of 70, bydonating a kidney, gifted her a newlife. These smiling and full of life eld-

erly women on Wednesday spokeabout their lives after the surgeriesat a gathering at Global Hospital,Parel to increase awareness aboutChronic Kidney Diseases andaging, the theme of World KidneyDay, this year.

Anything for our children:Sita Sankarnarayan (74) from

Borivali donated her kidney to her42-year-old daughter Deepa inMarch 2013 when Deepa was diag-nosed with kidney problems inSeptember 2012.“She was on dialysis from Sep-

tember 2012 toMarch 2013 but sheused to frequently get fever andthat was not a good sign. So I de-cided that it is best that she under-goes a transplant and Iwas ready togive my kidney, provided the doc-tors found it suitable”, said Sita.“Which mother would think

twice to do anything that wouldhelp her child? I had absolutely noapprehensions. Yes, there werepeople who told me that after do-nating, my quality of life would beaffected. I will not be able to walk. Iwill have retina detachment andwhat not. But I never believed all ofthese because, I myself being edu-cated, knew that the donor doesnot face any danger as long as youare with the right doctor and are fitto donate. I went ahead and do-natedmy kidney. This was inMarch

2013. And look at me today. I am asfit as any other person here. In fact,I started doing household choresseven days after the surgery”, said a

smiling Sita who is a retired chem-istry professor from a reputed col-lege in Mumbai.Sixty eight-year-old Lalitha

Menon, another doting motherfrom Malabar Hill who always be-lieved in leading a healthy lifestylesaid, “Keeping myself healthy haspaid off. I could donate a healthykidney tomy sonwhowas 48whenhe underwent the transplant inApril 2013”.Lalitha who was diagnosed with

cardiac issues fifteen years ago andhas a pacemaker, was ready to do-nate her kidney but was worriedthat her cardiac problemmight notlet her do so. But given the healthylifestyle she has been maintaining, the doctors found her perfectly fitfor a kidney transplant and a happymother was all set to give her sonher kidney.

Mom's the world:“Mymother lives inme”, said 68-

year-old Leena D'Silva from Ban-drawho underwent a kidney trans-plant in 1997.“Who would say that I had un-

dergone a transplant? I am ab-solutely fine. I owe this to mymother who donated her kidneywithout a thought”, said Leena. All threewomenhad one thing to

say. Transplant definitely is a betteroption than dialysis as life getsback very close to normal after atransplant and donating kidneydoes not harm the donor in any-way.“Have faith in your doctor, go

ahead and donate. Nothing will gowrong with you”, said Sita andLalitha. Leena said, “My motherdonated her kidney when she was70. She passed away a few years agodue to old age. While she was alivenothing went wrong with her be-cause of the donation. She livedwell”.

DIARY

Impossible is may be to comparethe thousands of InternationalWoman's Day celebrations held inthe city, but the Diocesan Councilof Catholic Women (DCCW), whichcelebrated a golden jubilee of“Glorious work” in Bandra lastSunday, certainly tried.

They tagged a 21st Valentine DayAnnual Special to coincide, threw inmore than 300 women (only over50 years!), added some interestingguests of honour, including popularBJP man Ashish Shelar and theCEO of Citizen's Bank GitaAndrades, and then, for some

added piquancy, a “pharoah” morethan 6 feet tall, named Luke, topreside over the show.He played the part to the hilt,

shamelessly wooing all theparticipants and sending some ofthem into a semi-swoon ofembarrassment mixed with delight. But nothing could take away from

the seriousness of the work thatthey do. The DCCW wasestanlished in 1964 during the

Eucharistic Congress in Mumbai asa registered Public Trust workingfor the welfare of women, childrenand the aged irrespective of class, caste or religion. As the currentpresident, Phil Fernandez put it, theaim is to motivate Catholic womenin self-reliance, self confidence etc, helping them realise theirpotential, thus empowering themand helping reach other womenand children in need.

Over the years, it has organizedseminars, workshops, events forthe aged, the handicapped and thedisadvantaged, interfaith prayerservices, visits to orphanages andjails. It has raised funds to build ahome at Zadpoli in Thane district, holds Christmas parties for slumchildren, and concentrates largelyon outreach programs. And it makes sure to hand out

the good times as well, to everyonethey come into contact with.

She said it!Flavia Agnes, feminist, activist, legal scholar and activist, advocateand co-founder of the legalresource group Majlis, has a sharpresponse to those sniggering aboutRahul Gandhi and his dependenceupon the “women's empowerment”mantra during his interview withthe biggest foghorn in the media. He used the words 31 times.

That's 31 times that women'sempowerment has been invoked bya prominent personality ontelevision. For the rest, it's a joke.

Please AAP chale jaon! That's the chant invoked by abunch of angry commuters caughtin the stampede in Churchgateyesterday which caused chaos andbrought down three scanners in thegeneral scrimmage surrounding theAAP star Arvind Kejriwal. The average Mumbaikar likes his

campaigns on the roads, thougheven there he would prefer to seethem out early in the morning orlate at night. And never, neverinterfere with his trains! For punishment, Kejriwal should

be forced to board a Virar Fastgoing to Churchgate at morningpeak hours, preferably fromAndheri. And no, he is not to get atrain to himself, but travel hangingout of the door, his mufflerfluttering in the breeze.

Pharoah Luke at the DCCW function in Bandra “terrorising” a participant with his attentions and making sure she enjoys herself.

welcomed by the hundreds of AAPworkers and supporters who hadgathered outside the domestic ter-minal of Mumbai's ChhatrapatiShivaji International Airport. Kejri-wal took an auto rickshaw to And-heri railway station to board a localtrain to Churchgate. After a 48-rupee rickshaw ride,

Kejriwal climbed the staircase ofthe station's bridge during rushhour. As a Churchgate-boundlocal arrived on the platform, theAAP leader and his supportersbarged into the already crowdedtrain. When the reached Church-gate, there was a mad rush bycommuters and onlookers, jostling for a glimpse of Kejriwal. Many people, including somefrom the media, were seen strug-gling to stay upright as Kejriwalmade his way outside the stationto head for a private fundraiser atNariman Point. The metal detec-tors at Churchgate railway stationgot toppled in the heavy rush asAAPworkersmade their way out.Agroup of youths waved black flagsat Kejriwal as he was leaving the

station. The protestors said theydid not belong to any organisationbut were students who wereprotesting against Kejriwal's al-legedmediamanagement as seenin a leaked video of him, in whichhe appears to tell a news anchor tohighlight parts of his interview.Nevertheless, in their exuber-

ance, AAP workers allegedlycaused some damage to publicproperty. According to the police,Kejriwal and his supporters com-mitted several traffic violationsduring the road show. After a smallcorner meeting at Colaba in theSouthMumbai constituency fromwhere party candidate MeeraSanyal is contesting, Kejriwalmarched for a two-hour road-show, from the historic AugustKranti Maidan to Khilafat House,an equally historic venue. The for-mer Delhi CM got a huge re-sponse.In the evening he left for

Mankhurd where he addressedthe AAP's rally in the constituencyof Medha Patkar. Today (Thurs-day), he will be taking a flight toNagpur and campaign in Bhan-dara and Chandrapur. On Friday, he will campaign for

Anjali Damania, who is contestingfrom Nagpur against senior BJPleader Nitin Gadkari, ending histour with a rally in Nagpur.

No re-examfor Algebra!By Yatin Ingle

On Tuesday, when the Alegbrapaper was suspected to have

been leaked, SSC students are nowworried as they are expecting therewould be a re-exam on the subject. However, though there is no con-clusion in the case yet, board offi-cials have stated that there wouldno re-examination for the subject. The Mumbai division had for-warded its report to the Maharash-tra State Board of Secondary andHigher Secondary Education (MSB-SHSE), which will take a final deci-sion over the case.

By Vishnudas Sheshrao

The Aam Admi Party's (AAP) LokSabha elections campaign rallythrough the city allegedly causedinconvenience to the regular com-muters, with the party flouting traf-fic rules and causing damage torailway property onWednesday.Metal detector frames placed at

gates of Churchgate station after26/11 blasts were uprooted and itsparts were seen dissembled due tothe large crowd of people gatheredhere. However, railway officials jus-tified that it was just an accident be-cause of uncontrolled crowd so nocomplaint has been filed againstanyone.AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal was

seen climbing a railway compoundwall at Andheri station to addresshis party workers who had gatheredon the road for which he did nothave an official permission. On arrival at Chhatrapati Shivaji

International Airport in the morn-ing, he embarked in an auto rick-shaw to reach the railway station.Kejriwal was seen in the autowith

four other partymembers including

him (making it five people in anauto, counting the driver). Police of-ficials said, “Carrying capacity of anauto is only three passengers”.In a crowded train to Churchgate,

the AAP chiefmanaged to get awin-dow seat too.Due to a huge crowd, two door-

frame metal-detectors were up-rooted at Churchage station.Western Railway Public RelationOf-ficer (PRO) Nitin David said, “Two

door-frame of metal detector hadfallen down. Railway teams putthem in place and both frames areoperational now. No complaint hasbeen failed”.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corpora-tion (BMC) has pulled down 4,391 ille-gal banners, posters and hoardings

across the city within aweekwith the electioncode of conduct kicking in. Three-fourth ofthese banners were of political parties.Mohan Adtani, additional municipal com-

missioner said, “A team has been formed toremove all the illegal banners in every wardand the deadline for the completion of thiswork is today (Thursday). The civic body isalso photographing the advertisements ondisplaywhichwill be used as a proof while fil-ing FIRs against offenders”.Sharad Bande, superitendent of BMC's li-

cense department said, “Offenders are iden-

tified based on their names put up in thehoardings and accordingly a letter is sent tothe police for further action”.The civic authority in co-ordination with

the political parties had to implement a pol-icy that would prevent proliferation of ban-ners across the city. Leaders of variouspolitical parties had already cleared the pol-icy last year. But the BMC has failed to ap-prove the administration’s draft policy tillnow.Mayor Sunil Prabhu said, “There are a few

problemswhich need to be recitifiedwith thedraft policy so that it can be passed. It is likelyto be approved after the Lok Sabha elections”.Samajwadi Party leader Rayiz Shaikh (can-

didate for the Lok Sabha elections fromNorth-East) has alleged that the civic admin-

istration has delayed the approvals evenwhen the group leaders are ready for it.A senior BMC official added, “The High

Court categorically has banned all hoardingsexcept a few negotiations and the policy is al-ready ready but I do not know about anydelay in the approval process”.Bande added, “The FIRs are still getting

filed in various wards by the licence inspec-tors, but it takes time as the verification hasto be done before a prosecution is carriedout”.As per the court's order inMarch last year,

the civic authority has removed around40,000 illegal hoardings, banners andposters – more than 70 per cent of whichwere political.

Kumar told me that I will beable to use the phone with-out any problem and do nothave to sell it in such a lowprice. He demanded Rs.1,000from me and said that I canuse the phone without being

detected”, Shaikh said.I suspected foul play and

did not reveal that the phonebelongs to me. After in-stalling some software,Kumar gave me the phone. Icame out of the shop and no-ticed that the IMEI numberof my phone had changed”,said Shaikh in his complaintto the police. After Shaikh approached

the police, he was asked to goback to Kumar as the officersneeded to nab him redhanded. “On Wednesday,Shaikh went back to Kumarand asked him to repeat it onanother phone. When Kumarinstalled the software we laida trap and arrested himunder various sections of theIT Act”, said PI BaburaoMukhedkar of Oshiwara po-lice station.Kumar has been working

for the shop since a fewmonths before which he usedto work for various mobileservice provider companies. The software that Kumarused to change the IMEInumber is called Jet 3x.

BJP Kisan Morcha na-tional president and ex-MLCPasha Patel lashed

out at the state governmentfor announcingmeager aid tofarmers affected by hailstormand unseasonal rains thathave lashedmost parts of thestate since the last fortnight.Speaking to newspersonshere yesterday, he said thatthe Hooda committee ap-pointed by the Centre in 2010had in its report recom-mended that the governmentgive compensation ofRs.25,000 per hectare to farm-

ers affected by unseasonalnatural calamities. However, the state government insteadhas announced a compensa-tion of just Rs.4,500 perhectarewhichwill not recoverthe huge losses that farmersin 28 districts of the state havesuffered.Patel, an agricultural expert

himself, argued that crops in14 lakh hectares in 28 districtshave been destroyed by un-seasonal hailstorm and rain-fall. He said that the Hoodacommittee had recommendedto the Centre on granting aidwhile taking into account thelife-span of horticulture crops

like grapes, pomegranates, ba-nanas as some crop varietiestake a longer duration to bearfruits. Patel stated that whilethe per hectare yield of somecrops like cereals and pulsesranges between Rs.60,000 toRs.65,000, the governmentwas offering an aid rangingbetween Rs.4,500 to Rs.12,000per hectare. He said that such ameager

aid will not at all help thefarmers to recover from theloss. Patel added that theCentre was also guilty of de-liberately fixing lower mini-mum support price forprocurement of foodgrains.

The BJP leader further statedthat political leaders cuttingacross party lines shouldmakea rational demand for en-hanced compensation ratherthan making vague demands.Replying to queries over futurecourse of action, Patel statedthat this time around the farm-ers instead of agitating wouldvote out the anti-farmer gov-ernment. Commenting uponthe government making ex-cuses citing model code ofconduct in force for the LokSabha polls, Patel thundered,“Are they going to hold elec-tions over the dead bodies ofour farmers?”

“OUR founder would like to meetyou before the panel discussion”,said the man who picked me up

from Bhubaneshwar airport last week. Wewere in the lobby of theMayfair Hotel and sowe sat and waited and while we waited hetoldme about themanwewaited for. “His fa-ther died when he was five and then he wentthrough a long period of poverty and hard-ship so he was determined to do somethingto help people escape poverty. So he has ded-icated himself to this and has never marriedfor this reason. He lives in a small rentedhouse and does not even have his own office. He works 17 hours a day.”Then he stopped and smiled as theman he

was telling me about had just walked in. Dr.Achyuta Samanta is a diminutive man with apleasant face and a nice smile but this is notthe first thing I noticed about him. The firstthing I noticed was that I hardly noticed himwhen he walked in. His manner is so simpleand self-effacing that it took me a minute towork out that this was the founder of what isprobably the largest charitable school for Adi-vasi children in the world. It is called theKalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS).

Mona Lisa BalI have been to Bhubaneshwar many timesbut I had not heard of it till late last year whena lady with the unusual name of Mona LisaBal wrote to ask me if I would be part of aWomen's Day panel discussion in KIIT Uni-versity. I said no and explained that this wasbecause every time I made a commitment ofthis kind some big journalistic reason usuallycausedme to ditch at the lastminute. But, shewas persistent and so it was that I was inBhubaneshwar on March 8 despite a chanceto bemoderator of NarendraModi's 'Chai PeCharcha' in Delhi. The chance to meet Modiat this point in such an exciting electiontempted me to ditch at the last minute but Ifelt bad doing this and so I went. And, am Iglad I did because if I had not seen KISS withmy own eyes I would not have believed itcould exist.Even as I write this I can hardly believe it

does or that one man could have created avast infrastructure of educational institutionsthat charge full fees to enable KISS to provide

its Adivasi students not just with free schooleducation butwith everything else they need.Food, clothes and hostel accommodationand for those who want to go for higher edu-cation there are seats reserved in the collegesof KIIT University. KIIT (Kalinga Institute ofIndustrial Technology) was started on ahumble scale twenty years ago and today is auniversity that includes medical anddental colleges, an institute of fashion tech-nology and an international school. But, inmy view it is KISS that is Dr. Samanta's realachievement. After driving around the sprawling campus

of KIITUniversity I was taken to a collection of

yellow buildings on the edge of awasteland onwhich children played. “These are all KISSchildren”, said Chitta Panda who had beenmyguide since he pickedmeup at the airport. Thechildren played on the edge of an unsightlygarbage dump and I, cynical still, pointed outthat even if these were Adivasi children frompoor families they should not be playing soclose to a garbage dump. He said they coulddo nothing about the garbage because theland that the children had made their playingfield belonged to the government. This did not seem tome like a good enough

excuse and I continued being cynical until Italked to children studying in KISS and heardthem tell me how much their lives hadchanged since they had come to school. Theycame from very poor Adivasi villages, theysaid, and saw their parents only once a yearin the summer holidays but did not misshome because they were so fulfilled with

what they were learning in school. Whatabout very small children, I asked one of theteachers, were they not homesick? He admitted that they often were but the

youngest children in the school were overseven years old so it was easier to explain tothem what they were doing here. I was takenon a tour of the KISS campus and shown theschool gym and conference room and thecupboards filled with trophies won by KISSstudents, some in international competitions. And, I was taken to see a vast dining room inwhich it was possible for 7,000 children to eattheir meals at the same time and by the endof the tour my cynicism had vanished and Ibegan to see Dr. Samanta in a new light.

War against povertyHe has built an institution that is replicableand if replicated on a smaller scale in Adivasiareas across India could provide the mostpowerful weapon to win the war againstpoverty. The key to winning this war is not bythrowing cheap food grain and dole at thoseliving in extreme poverty but by helping themescape the horrors of it by giving them an ed-ucation.What is commendable about KISS isthat it has been built without any help fromthe government. Not even the land on whichthe school stands has been given free. This ismore than likely to be the main reason whyKISS is such a success story because had itbeen controlled by officials of ourmanymin-istries of poverty and rural development Ihave no doubt at all that they would have in-terfered in the most unhelpful way.Proof lies in the appalling standards that

exist in state institutions for children's wel-fare across India. From my own work withstreet children in Mumbai I can tell you thatchildren prefer life in the streets than in theprison-like conditions of government con-trolled children's homes in this city. Whenthey are locked up for begging or vagrancy Ispend days getting them released. So perhapswhat we need to win the war against povertyis for more private citizens to do what Dr.Samanta has done in Bhubaneshwar. I havetold you his story today because on the flightback toMumbai I felt ashamed that as a jour-nalist, deeply interested in the war againstpoverty, I had never even heard of KISS.

ALL the myriad colours in the universe arebut the different grades and shades of

light, the creator of all elements, which hasdecorated the heavens so beautifully withsun, moon, plants, and stars; which hasmadethe land and water; with all the beauties ofthe lower spheres, in some parts dull ad insome parts bright, which man has namedlight and shade. The sun, moon, planets andstars, the brilliance of electricity, lesser lightof gas, lamp, candle, coal and wood, all sowthe sun reappearing in different forms; thesun is reflected in all things, be they dull peb-bles or sparkling diamonds, and their radi-ance is according to their capability ofreflections. This sows that light is the one andonly source, and the cause of the whole cre-ation. “God is the light of the heaven and ofthe earth”, the Holy Koran says, and we readin Genesis, “And God said: let there be light, and there was light”.All forms on whatever plane they exist, are

molded under the law of affinity. Every atomattracts towards itself the atom of its own el-ement; every positive atom attracts the nega-tive atom of its own element; every negativeattracts the positive; yet each attraction is dif-ferent and distinct. These atoms group to-gether and make a form. The atoms of theabstract plane group together and make

forms of light and colour; these and all differ-ent forms of the finer forces of life are seen bythe seer. The forms of the mental plane arecomposed of the atoms of that plane; theseare seen by the mind's eye and are calledimagination. On the physical plane thisprocess may e seen in a more concrete form.Theymystic sees on the abstract plane one

or other element predominating at a certaintime, either ether, air, fore, water or earth.

Every element in the finer forces of life is ren-dered intelligible by the direction of its activ-ity and color; and the various forms of lightshow its different rates of activity. For in-stance the feeling of humor develops intogreater humor, and sadness into a deeper sor-row, ad so it is with the imagination: everypleasant thought develops a pleasure and ex-pands into still pleasanter thought, and everydisagreeable imagination grows and becomesmore intense. Again, on the physical planewenot only see men dwelling together incitesand villages, but even beasts and birds livingin flocks and herds; coal is found in the coal-mine, and gold in the gold-mine; the forestcontains thousands of trees, where as thedesert holds not a single one. All this provesthe power of affinity which collects andgroups the kindred atoms, and makes ofthem numerous forms, there by creating anillusion before the eye of amanwho thus for-gets the one source in the manifestation ofvariety. The direction taken by every elementto make a form depends upon the nature ofits activity.

MATTER & SPIRIT

‘….And there was light’

WHY did the police take no action whenAam Aadmi Party (AAP) workers pulled

down metal detectors at the Churchgatestation? Why did the railway police not helpcommuters at several stations on theWesternRailway between Andheri and Churchgate –when they were pushed around by the AAPworkers. Thousands of office-goers could notgo to work on time and they were seen hope-lessly trying to getting into the suburban lo-cals. Why was there no crackdown bythe police when the AAP workers damagedproperly, abused and caused inconvenienceto thousands of railway commuters? TheAAP, which claims it works for the 'aamaadmi,' has actually hurt 'aam aadmi' inMumbai. What is amatter for concern is the inaction

of the railway police. They stood by and didnothing when hundreds of Aam Aadmi Partyworkers went on a rampage. What has causedthe sudden paralysis of the railway police?Did they have orders from above? The AAPmen were completely lawless and it is sur-prising that at no stage of their distinctive ac-tion were they pulled up.The State Home minister said after the

damage was done, if property was destroyed, action will be taken. The railway administra-tion did not bother about issuing an apology. They have reacted to the vandalism and in-convenience caused to the public in a cava-lier manner. It is their duty to ensureprotection to the commuters and see that noinconvenience is caused to them. What AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal probably

has not realised is that the first impression hehas created is totally against his party. Heknows he does not have a ghost of a chancein the forthcoming Lok Sabha poll scenario inMumbai.

Putin must help SyriansTHIS is to request PresidentVladimir Putin of Russia to inter-vene actively again to resolve theSyria imbroglio as expeditiously aspossible, due to the immense hard-ship it is causing to the ordinarypeople of the country. Recently Iwas on a professional visit toYemenand observed Syrian refugees at var-

ious street signals either begging ortrying to sell items of daily use, e.g.water, tissues, beads, etc. to make aliving. Even young kids aged around6 to 12 have been reduced to beg-ging on the streets. It is a heart-rending sight. In the eyes of many ofthe children, I read anger, hurt andpain that this has become their lotin life and that we are not helpingthem adequately. Surely our worldowes future generations of children, irrespective of region, religion, andcountry a better future. Syrian chil-dren who should be studying inschools are begging in the streets ofneighboring countries. Is this right?

—Rajendra K. Aneja, Dubai

Secularism misunderstoodAS reported, elections are aroundthe corner and various parties arefighting tooth and nail to outwiteach other and started following'holier than thou' attitude. But themain issue the political parties arefighting over and proving that theyare secular while other parties arevery non-secular or rather commu-nal. But it would be worthwhile to

note that the very word 'secularism'or 'being secular' is most misunder-stood and misinterpreted in India. In the real sense of word, 'secular-ism' or 'being secular' means thatreligion does not play any part inthe working of a nation or her peo-ple. The nation is foremost and allother religions, caste or creed iscompletely ignored. After all reli-gion is a personal matter and not anational matter. Anybody is ab-solutely free to convert from any re-ligion to any religion of his choicewithout state's interference or in-volvement. It amounts to 'One lawone nation theory,' what is good forthe nation is good for everybody, ir-respective of caste, creed and reli-gion. These are the indications inmany advanced countries. But inIndia it is absolutely and diametri-caly opposite. We do not have onelaw, one nation theory.

—S.P. Sharma,Mumbai

Cast your vote intelligentlyWHILE our nation is on batedbreath and on the crossroad of his-tory, at this critical juncture, it is theduty and responsibility of everyvoter to make conscious choice andselect only those whose honesty, in-tegrity, public service and creden-tials are known, irrespective of theirparties, and who will save the na-tion and democracy.

It is very sad, and all are aware ofthe unbearable and disgraceful con-ditions in the country, and that too,in spite of our rich civilisation ofcenturies and mosaic culture andIndia being a home of all religions, some of our past leaders imbued bygreed have ruined the country, andthe nation today is steeped in cor-ruption, violence, scams, povertyand unemployment. Hence, eachvoter must be enthused with a vi-sion of founding fathers and ensurethat it will be a dawn of new era ofdignified life for all and especiallythe poor, marginalised and rejectedwill begin to taste the fruits of free-dom, which were denied to them allalong in the past.

Opposite views on AAPYOUR edit-page columnist, Viren-dra Kapoor, deserves to be compli-mented on his objective analysis ofthe AAP ('Old politics claims the

new party as it stoops to seek pub-licity', ADC, March 10). His forth-right statement: "the Aam AadmiParty is no different form the exist-ing parties...(it) is a motley crowd ofself-seekers glued together by thesole objective of seeking powerthrough the shortest possible route"says it all eloquently. He further saysthat "if Arvind Kejriwal comesacross as sincere to some, it is onlybecause he plays the outsider to thehilt, despite messing around withpower for 49 terrible days as Delhi'schief minister". He adds that he hastactically surrendered power formore power which is absolutelycorrect..

Medha Patkar, on the other hand, even while disapproving of Kejri-wal's hasty plunge into the politicalquagmire, has no qulams about ac-cepting his ticket for contesting theLok Sabha polls from MumbaiNorth-East. Her views that "in 49days, the party achieved more thanany other party" and that Kejriwalwas "compelled to resign" have tobe taken with a large pinch of salt.

Malaysian airliner mysteryTHE MH-370 flight of the Malaysianair liner between Kuala Lumpur ( KL

) & Beijing , a Boeing 777 jetlinertook off Saturday at midnight ( KLlocal time ) without any hiccup butsooner it went out of the radar & nobody knows what happened there-after , 239 on board including cabincrew of 12 just vanished in thinair on Sunday Many theories of apossible air crash are floating in theair , however the fact is yet to befound . It includes five Indians outof which three were from Mumbai .The pilot is reported to be one of thebest for this kind of wide bodied aircraft as his past records bear the tes-timony to it .

It is essential that the investiga-tion should be carried out asapwith the help of international ex-pertise to ascertain what really didhappen to this flight , as it is also al-leged that four boarded the planewith stolen passports out of whichtwo Italians had claimed that theyare the losers . So the mystery ismany fold , now lets hope that weget to the facts at the earliest withthe hope that the passengers maysurvive, if the aircraft had notcrashed .

—Bikram Banerjea,Mumbai

THE missing Malaysian airplane isa colossal and chilling tragedy. Theonly silver lining in this heartrend-ing situation is that countries likeUS, China, Taiwan, Vietnam,Malaysia, etc., who sometimessquabble amongst themselves, havebrushed their differences aside andare cooperating to locate the miss-ing plane. About 40 ships and 30 air-planes from many countries aretrying to find the missing plane. This informal co-operation be-tween countries is laudable.

If it is an accident, we need toknow so that manufacturers can fixthe issues; if it is terrorism, we needto know so that we realize that thewar on terror has to be intensified.

—Rajendra K. Aneja, Dubai

DESPITE frantic search by deploy-ing one of the most advanced tech-niques operated by six nations, there is no trace of the ill-fatedMH370 flight, even after three daysof its disappearance. Various theo-ries about its suddenly vanishingfrom radar screen are makingrounds in the media. Some haveeven started suspecting the exis-tence of a mysterious force resem-bling the one reported from theBermuda Triangle region in the At-lantic. Let us hope for the best and

pray for the safety of all the passen-gers and crew on the flight.

Mumbai monorail a missive!APROPOS 'Seriously - it's a Rs 3,000crore toy train!' ( ADC , Mar 10 ), in-deed the monorail has been inau-gurated with much fanfare for amonth now for which this cityboasts of having it first time in India, however so far the Mumbaikars areconcerned they did not get themuch required relief from thisurban facility for their daily com-muting to the work place . Primarily, it has been opened for a very smallsection of this huge linear metrop-olis & not connecting either themain hub in the town or that of thesuburban area . The ADC report'sstatistics for the footfalls so farrightly reveals that most of the usershave come for a fun ride than forany other purpose . A city compris-ing of an estimated 6 million dailylocal train commuters would hardlybe able to appreciate such a costlyfacility , which did not come to theiruse for the practical purposes .However I still harbour hope thatwhile the complete reach of nearly20 Km betweenWadala & Jacob Cir-cle becomes operational , may be itwould cater a bit for those whowould use the monorail to com-mute, living along this route .

—Bikram Banerjea,Mumbai

Ban on betting's ludicrousAPROPOS your cover story "Rs.80,000 crore on who votes forwhom" (ADC, Mar.12). It is surpris-ing how often bureaucratic mindsetand resistance to changeby our political entity de-prives the government ofavenues to raise considerable finan-cial resources which it claims itbadly needs. The ban on betting inthis country is not only self-defeat-ing, but also ludicrous since bettingis carried out openly and on a mas-sive scale. I am sure that many ofour self-righteous politicians in-dulge in it too. If betting is legalisedand taxed, as is done in most West-ern countries, it would constitutean enormous source of revenue fora cash-strapped government and afaltering economy. Any moral argu-ments against gambling would behypocritical, since you would bemerely acknowledging that whichopenly exists.

LETTER OFTHE DAY

THE “secular” parties have beendeliberately hiding some historicalfacts while launching tiradesagainst the “communal” BJP andRSS:

1. At the time of Partition, Sar-dar Vallabhbhai Patel and Dr.Ambedkar had proposed the ex-change of Hindu-Muslim popula-tion between India and Pakistan,i.e. Hindus of Pak to be brought toIndia and Indian Muslims to shiftto Pakistan,

2. It was the 'Iron Man' Sardarwho persuaded Nehru to lift theban on RSS after the designatedCourt found no evidence againstthe organization in the MahatmaGandhi assassination case,

3. Firm action by the Sardar insending Indian Army to Hyder-abad in 1948 prevented theNizam-ordered total genocide ofHindus, who were his own sub-jects. Nehru was reluctant to sendtroops to stop the religious bigot'smass slaughter of Hindus.

— Jorhat Singh, Kandivali

THE Congress-led secular lobbyfrequently accuses the BJP-RSS oftrying to divide the country. I

would like to put a few counter-questions to them in this regard:

1. Was it the Muslim League, orthe RSS/ Hindu Mahasabha thatdemanded and achieved the vivi-section of the then undividedIndia on religious lines?

2. In order to hasten the processof creation of Pakistan, whothreatened Direct Action that ledto the mass slaughter of Hindusacross the country?

3. In independent India, whocarved out a separate district ofMallapuram in Kerala to be exclu-sively a Muslim majority district? No "secularist" without exception, has raised even a faintest word ofprotest against this blatantly com-munal measure.

4. Why the State of Jammu &Kashmir and parts of N E Indiahave been officially declared asDisturbed Areas? The commonfactor in these two cases is that theHindu citizens living there havebeen reduced to a minority.

TO destroy Modi’s prospects inthe LS polls of 2014, the Congressis desperately trying to dig deeplyinto the personal life of the Gu-jarat CM. They feel that NaMo isconcealing the fact about hismarried life that has failed to last. They are also scanning throughthe column about the marital sta-tus in his nomination form. Butthe main question that begs foran answer is – “Why this ‘innova-tive’ idea was not even thought ofduring the three successive Gu-jarat Assembly polls which re-turned Modi to the CM’s throneeach time with an ever increasingmargin?”

— Jorhat Singh, Kandivali

IN order to corner NaMo from allsides before the first vote is cast in

the 2014 LS elections, the Con-gress seems to have stumbledupon a “novel” idea, viz., Modi’spersonal life.

The “secular” party thinks thatthe Gujarat CM is married andhas “deserted” his “spouse” with-out legally separating. If that beso, then the best way to prove thisis to first refer to the records inRegistrar of Marriages office forthe relevant period. If such anentry is indeed found, then theCongress can approach the“estranged” lady and request herto appear before the media to re-veal the “truth” to the people ofIndia. If the 130-year-old Partysucceeds in this venture, then itcould pave the way for it to retainpower at the Centre for a record3rd term.

joinder explaining point bypoint how baseless andmali-cious the allegations of theState are. The nexus of theGujarat government headedby Narendra Modi, its CrimeBranch headed by powerfulpolicemen who have beencollaborators of the regimesince 2002 and Rais KhanPathan, a former employee ofthe organisationwho is beingused as a proxy in this mali-cious war have also been ex-posed. Before this, too, Khanhas been 'aided' in his mali-cious efforts by senior legalfunctionaries who are politi-cally in allegiance with theGujarat government (in theGujarat high court andSupreme Court). He has nowbeen cited as 'witness' by theCrime Branch, Ahmedabad,in this false and maliciouscase. The timing of this 'FIR'is revealing. A cooked upcase has obviously beenraked up to prevent an ap-peal in the Zakia Jafri v/sNarendra Modi Criminal

pg 16-17 We tell you how to looksuper stylish in Gingham

Everyone has had short hair at somepoint in their life. Whether it was ablunt cut with bangs when you were in

school, a chic hairdo a-la Bipasha Basu orLara Dutta, a long bob like funny girl JenniferAniston or some funky waves like songstressRihanna — the bob has been doing therounds on and off the runway for quite awhile now. And since celebrities are revertingto this look in preparation forspring/summer 2014, you should considergoing short for summer too. Don't worry ifyou're confused about whether to get a chin-grazing bob, a demi-bob or one that skimsyour shoulders because we're telling youwhat bob suits your face type, showing youwhat accessories to dress it up with andtelling you what outfits you can opt for tocompliment the look and stay your stylishbest while keeping up with the trend.

THE BEST STYLE FOR YOUR FacE

If you want to look super-stylish, make surethat you get a bob that's best suited to theshape of your face. From triangular anddiamond to round and heart-shaped, hereare a few bobs that will suit different facesbest, along with some celebrity examples todraw inspiration from:

Round faces: Round faces lookgood with shortbobs, but theyhave to be sleek. You've already gotwide sides with around face, so youdon't want to addany more width to yourface with a cut that's gottoo much volume. If you have a short neck, you should get a bob at jaw level but for alonger neck, a little longer is a good idea.Side-swept bangs are better than thickforehead bangs because they add a littledefinition to a soft, rounded face. If you havea defined chin, this will help the bob lookmore stylish even if it's short. celebrity bob pick: Katherine Heigl

THE BEST OF THE BOB

Page 14: Adc 13 mar 2014

Square faces:Square faces havestrong jaws andquite a lot ofangles, so it's bestto get a haircutthat softens outyour jaw. Agraduated bob worksbest for a square face.Choose the one that is short at the back andlonger near the jawline in the front, going alittle below the jaw. Celebrity bob pick: Olivia Wilde

Heart faces: If you'vegot a heart-shapedface, you've got aslightly pointedjaw. Bobs lookfabulous on faceswith this shape, butmake sure that it is a

long bob. Althoughyou can pull off a chin-

length style as well, the endsshould be tapered rather than blunt. Side-swept bangs also work very well with thisface type.Celebrity bob pick: Jennifer Aniston

Oval faces Oval facescan carry off mosthairstyles, but ifyou're opting for abob and want it tolook fabulous, geta sophisticatedbob that shows offyour strong jaw line. But, you should addlayers so that it's not toosharp and if you've got a high forehead, consider getting long bangs to mask this.Blunt bangs also work.Celebrity bob pick: Rihanna

Long face: Long faces can sport trendybobs, especially if there is a bit of a wave. The bob shouldn't be too short though, something that ends just below the jaw isperfect because it will show off your bone

structure. An A-line bob alsoworks well. Celebrity bob

pick: VictoriaBeckham

Triangle face:People with this face typecan rock a bob near the jawline, but you

have to make sure it's nottoo short. The right

length willaccentuate yourlong neck and ifyou get side-swept bangs anda little volumenear the crown,

your face canappear softer and

rounder. If you're optingfor a chin-length cut you should get it witha few waves and layers. Celebrity bob pick: Mila Jovovich

Diamond face:These face typescan look veryangular and if youget a good cut,you almost won'tsee the diamondshape. You need anasymmetrical bobwhich can make youlook grown-up andsophisticated. Keep the hair full around thecrown but keep your hair flat at the sidesbecause your forehead is narrow as is yourchin. This hairstyle will balance out your faceshape while accentuating your features. Celebrity bob pick: Vanessa Hudgens

STYLIng YOUR BOB

If you think you can't do much with yourhair just because it is short, take a look at ourrecommendations on how you can style itfor different occasions to achieve different looks:

Everyday look: For an everyday style that islow on maintenance and really quick, simply

blow dry your hair straight and part it in thecentre, or slightly off-centre to get long layersframing your face on either side. Think MegRyan from You've Got Mail. It is easy to do,looks classy and is very low maintenance. Ifyou want something a little more feminine, use a curling tong and curl your hair. Grabbig chunks at random and don't curl yourhair too tightly. Once you are done, finish offwith a hairspray to make the curls stay put.

Work appropriate: If you want a hairstylethat is going to be muted enough for workand still look chic, try the side-swept bob,Sweep most of your hair onto one side, sothat you get a heavy fringe. You can also usea round barrel brush to blow dry it to add amore pronounced shape to your bob.

Edgy-chic: If you want to look razor sharpand nail the rock-chic look, pin straight hairis the way to go. Straighten each section andspray hair spray liberally. An extreme sideparting makes this look all the more edgy, especially if you have an asymmetrical bob.

The messy bob: Tousled, just out of bed hairis a great look to wear, but, if you want to addanother interesting element to the look, trydutch, fishtail or regularly braiding a 1-3inch section of your hair from the front andtake it to the back of your head. You shouldstop at the point behind your ear. Pin withbobby pins and loosely curl the rest of yourhair. The messier the look, the better!

Formal events: For a more formal occasion, you can opt for a retro waves. Pin aside yourfringe and curl your hair with a big barrel tocreate waves. Apply a mousse before yourstart off to keep the curls in place. Then, unpin your fringe and create a giant pin curlwith it to nail the retro look.

WHAT TO WEAR

If you thought that a bob was going to makeyour style look monotonous, you couldn't befurther away from the truth. In fact, there'stons of different things you can do to putyour bob under the spotlight and let it be thestar of your look. Here are the clothes andaccessories you can experiment with:Strapless clothes If you like a flirty feminine

look, wear tops and dresses that are off-shouldered. This makes your top half lookmore elongated and draws all the attentionto your bob. If you are a little uncertainabout going completely off-shoulder, try aone-shoulder top/dress or a strappyone instead.

Boatneck clothes Another way to create acanvas where your bob will get the mostattention, is by opting for a boatneck blouseor top. This creates a blank look whilst beingchic. What's best is that it is an interestingstyle of clothing, but it doesn't take theattention away from your bob. This is also amore edgy option if off-shouldered topsaren't your style.

Racy backs If you are bored of the same oldlook and want something sexier, pick topsand dresses with a deep or scooped back. This will draw the most attention to yourbob and your back and make you lookstatuesque as well, as it reveals more of thenape of your neck and shoulders than anyother style.

Ear cuffs Ear cuffs are popular right nowand are the perfect accessory to sport with abob. Not only do they embellish it, but theyalso ensure that all eyes are on your bob, nomatter what the outfit. If you choose to weara ear cuff, avoid wearing anything aroundyour neck as it will be a definite over kill andwill take the attention away from your bob, especially if you have an asymmetrical bobor severe bob.

styling tips for those of you with bob haircuts and

she says, “When it comes to a bob haircut, it

looks best with an outfit that doesn't make you

look tomboyish and looks girly. If you want to

look as feminine as possible, shirts with low

neckline and dresses in girly colours work well.

Lacy tops or with frills and even floral prints

Glynda Alves gets talking to talented duo, Karan Berry and Leon Vaz of Karleo, to find out more about their designs and what we canexpect from their show at Lakmé Fashion Week today

DYNAMIC DUOCo-founded by designer friends Karan

Berry and Leon Vaz, Karleo was an ideathat came from the likeness in their

design sensibilities and the synchrony thatthey found in their work. They both had theidea of combining the rich aesthetics of Indianculture with a western approach to design. Andthat led to creating pieces that offered Indianclientele the same quality and designstandards that are upheld by leadinginternational couture labels. With the idea ofcreating outfits for special occasions(including bridal), the design philosophy atKarleo is that of contrasts — taking simplepieces of clothing from our day-to-day livesand giving them an exclusive definitionthrough rich textures, embroidery anddetailing of various kinds. Their talent has nowlet them showcase their collection at LakméFashion Week. We catch up with the talentedduo to find out how they got started and whattrends a bride-to-be can look forward to.

Are you excited to be participating in LakméFashion Week?Yes, we are excited about our runwaypresentation at LFW S/R'14. It's a good

platform to showcase our work to the best inthe industry.

What inspired your collection? Our main source of inspiration is always Indiaand we take elements that make this countrywhat it is. This season, we have taken Indianspices as our inspiration for the collection. Thecolours and textures have all been inspired by India.

When did you'll decide to collaborate and design? We decided to collaborate in a very organicform. It happened naturally. I guess when youshare the same wavelength in approachingdesign, such kind of mergers just happen.

Tell us about the creative process you twohave. Do you disagree a lot? How does it work?We both have our skills and expertise indifferent areas of design and we handle it inour individual space and to our luck, it allcomes together in totality, which makesworking with each other so good.

Which do you prefer — designing Indian wear

or western wear?We prefer to do western wear but are also opento the idea of doing Indian wear, thoughmaybe at a later stage.

What colours and fabrics do you both enjoyworking with?We aren't restrictive with our use of colours orfabrics. We play with them depending on themood for that season or collection. We usefabrics like tulle, organza, Georgette, satin, silkand so on.

You'll design wedding dresses — tell us, whatdoes a bride need to keep in mind for a whitewedding dress and for a traditional Indianwedding ensemble. The most important thing, according to us, isthat the piece designed for you should reflectyour identity and personality. The shape beingthe most important thing while choosing ordesigning an outfit.

What trends are going to be popular forbrides this year? This season has seen a huge trend forsomething which is slim and well-fitted with

embroidery running on the body like a tattooon your skin. and goes into a huge skirt withlayers and layers of tulle, making it ethereal.

What's your number one tip for brides? The most important thing to remember is theshape. It's the foundation on which everythingis built on. So shape it smartly. Also, do notover do it. Keep it delicate and minimal andchoose your accessories wisely.

We love your accessories! Tell us, why did youboth decide to come up with this line?Accessories play an important role. We felt theneed to make something which adds theperfect amount of oomph to your outfit. Ourheadbands were designed keeping this inmind. It's the right amount of charm neededto adorn what you are already wearing. It's likea new jewelry piece that you can mix and wearit with anything and everything. With this youdon't need to add anything else. It speaks for itself.

Who do you think dresses very well inBollywood?Sonam Kapoor.

Tuck your shirt in to emphasise the narrow

Gingham is a trend that is effortless, classy andtimeless. Shirley Mistry tells you how to rock the look

PIcture PerfectIf you’re getting married this year, now’s the time to start your hunt for the perfect dres. And as Karleo told us, (see Page 15)shape is the most important thing. Shirley Mistry tells you what white wedding dress to pick as per your body type

It is not about how stunning the dress is. What is more important is how stunning it is going to look on you. To make sure you enhance your best features on your big day andeffectively hide the problem areas, take a look at what white wedding dresses will suit your body type.

rectangle shaPedYou are rectangle shaped if yourbust, waist and hips are allrelatively the same size. Your biggesttask is to pick a dress that helps yougive off the illusion of having curves. So, pick an empire waist, where the skirtstarts just below your bust to detract attention from your waist and hips. Youcould also wear an A-line dress. One with a fitted bodice and a high, cinchedwaist will make you look both slimmer and more curvy. The flare thatfollows, will effectively hide the problem areas. You can also opt for dresseswith a high waist belt to create a cinched waist. However, stay away fromstraight-cut sheath dresses as they are bound to make you look boxy.

tIPs to keeP In mIndThese are some tips that will help you pick yourdream dress:l If you are busty, stay away from dresses thathave a tube bodice. Even if you are going thestrapless route, opt for a V-neck or sweetheartneck. Also, avoid high necklines. Instead, optfor a scooped neckline that will show off theright amount of décolletage and make yourneck look slimmer and longer.l If you have a small bust, opt for asweetheart neckline. You could also optfor a gown that has a ruched bodice. The extra fabric will make your bustlook fuller.l If you are tall, most readymadegowns won't make the cut. Spend time

to get a gown custom made, becausenothing is worse than your wedding dress

ending a few inches shorter than it should.l If you are petite, opt for dresses that fit and then flareout. Also, a train will help create the illusion of height.l If you are slightly bigger, an empire dress can be yourbest bet. The skirt must begin right under your bust andflow to a natural, floor length hem. Make sure the fabricdoesn't stretch or bunch up. This will only make you looklike you've squeezed into the dress. Custom made dresseswill help you hide your flaws and accentuate your bestfeatures to the T.

hourglassYour hips andshoulders are thesame size, with a well-defined, narrow waist. If you fall under thiscategory, then you arevery lucky as there ishardly anything toworry about. Pick amermaid, trumpet orsheath silhouette. Thiswill highlight yourenvious figure andmake sure that thefabric clings to theright places. Also, youcould choose tohighlight only yourtop half and pick an A-line dress. Add abeaded belt to cinchyour waist further.

Pear shaPedYou are pear shaped if youhave a small top and aheavier bottom. With such ashape, your worst areas are inall likelihood, your bottomand thighs. You should behighlighting your bodice andwaistline instead. Opt forstyles that will highlight yourtop half, while masking thebottom. Off-shoulder dresseswith an empire waist and along train are excellent, as areA-line dresses that fit andflare. Pick one with a highwaistline to give it the illusionof being smaller. If you wantto go more traditional, youcould even pick a ball gownwith a fitted bodice and a full, round skirt. However, stayaway from sheath ormermaid dresses asthey will stick toyour curves.

Inverted trIangleYou are an inverted triangle shape if yourshoulders are wider than your hips. With such abody shape, it is very important to pick a dressthat gives an element of balance to your look. So, pick a ball gown with a full, stiff skirt. Thefullness of the skirt will balance your shoulders. If not a ball gown, pick a mermaid skirt. Theflare at the bottom will also help make yourshoulders look proportionate and make youappear more hourglass shaped. If you don'tmind opting for something less traditional, optfor a dress just above your knee length anddraw more attention to your legs. This type ofdress will make your bottom half look longerand detract the attention from your shoulders.Strapless is fine, but avoid halter dresses, asthey will make your shoulders protrude.

You and your team have been

encouraging your colleague to

forwards by replying to them.

Your responses are almost like

the stamp of approval that she

is looking for. Your situation has

a simple solution — stop

responding to her mails. She will

soon realise that none of you

are interested in what she

sends and she will stop doing

so. Refrain from bringing it up

with her unless you absolutely

have to, as you run the chance

of her feeling bad. Just don't

dear heena,

If you have the courage to speak

up, the next time you see

someone smoking, just request

them to smoke in the

designated area as it bothers

you. However, if you don’t think

you will be able to do so, you

could leave an anonymous

complaint with the HR. No need

to mention any names — just

say that the cigarette smell

bothers you and you shouldn't

have to deal with second hand

smoke — which is irritating and

also bad for health. You could

also talk to your boss — even

though he/ she himself is a

smoker, we are sure that most

logical bosses will see seeing

that what is happening is wrong.

my problem is with my future MIL. I askedher what she would be wearing to the

not know how to handle the situation. She isreally nice otherwise. What do I do?!

— danielle d’costa, malad

dear danielle,

Always approach this situation assuming

that the other person has no idea what

wedding etiquette is. Innocent until proven

guilty! So, be gentle, it is your future MIL

after all and you don't want to start your

married life on a bad note. The best way to

deal with this is to get your fiancé involved.

Both of you should tell her that while the

dress is lovely (say why you like it), you were

hoping the bride would be the only one in

white so that she would stand out in

pictures. Offer to dye the dress for her or if

you're feeling extra generous, pick up a new

one for her. If she is adamant on wearing

her white dress to your wedding, let it go.

Remember, she's going to be the one who

is going to look silly!

wide-eyed 20-year-old fresher...

You've broken up with your man and have vowed neverto speak to him again. But, in today's age of easycommunication, a simple poke on Facebook or status

message on Whatsapp can have you spiralling down the pathof forgiveness, making you forget why you broke up in thefirst place. So, if you want to call it quits for good, we tell youhow to stick to the plan.

Let's not be friends

From celebrities to your best friend — you're going to have anumber of people around you who seem to have masteredthe art of staying friends with their exes. However, instead oftaking a leaf from their books, we recommend you listen tous. Avoid any sort of contact with your ex, at least for theimmediate future. It might seem like an extreme step, butyou need to let it sink in that your boyfriend is no longer amajor part of your life.

take care of yourseLf

You might never have thought of it this way, but apart fromthe obvious reasons, you also need to take care of youremotional health to ensure that you don't start comparingyour current situation to a time when you were in yourrelationship. This would lead you to conclude, usuallyincorrectly, that you were much happier before and so,maybe the breakup was a bad idea, after all.

Goodbye memories

It’s recommended that you pack up all pictures, gifts andother mementos from your time with your ex, for the timebeing. One day, you will be mature enough to look at them

with just the right amount of nostalgia and without secondguessing your decision. But, now is not the time for that.Keep the memories safe — don't discard them — but don'tkeep them in a place where you can access them easily.

sociaL media precautions

It just takes one seemingly emotional Facebook post for youto think “Hmm, maybe he's changed. Why not give it anothertry?” It is thoughts like these that you want to avoid and if youfeel that you can't fight these random urges to get backtogether, you should consider un-friending him on Facebookand not following him on Twitter or Instagram.

keep a note

This is a really good way to remind yourself why you brokeup. Over time, it is possible that you will forget the smallfights that went on to become huge problems. So, when youbreak up, note down all the reasons that made you decidethat it was the best course of action. Try and keep strongemotions at bay while writing down the reasons though —you don't want these notes to make you a vindictive, unforgiving person.

the friend

Everyone has that one friend. This friend understands youand sometimes, can see what's better for you even when youcan't. So, when you break-up, extract a promise from yourbest friend, that she will not let you get back with your ex, nomatter what! However, keep in mind that if you are unwillingto listen to reason when the time comes, it might lead to anugly fight.

THE BIG BREAK! So, you've finally broken up with your loserboyfriend. Congrats! But, it’s too easy to fall intothe reconcilation trap. Dev Goswami brings you afew tips to ensure that you stay broken up

LOVIN’ IT UPHistory need not repeat itselfMy boyfriend and I have been going out for alittle over a month. He says that he really likesme, and I like him too. He reminds me of myolder brother, has the same temper, and itworries me cause my brother has an assaultcharge since he hit his wife. How can I be surethat my boyfriend won’t do anything of this sort?Am I worrying over nothing, given the memoriesthat haunt me of my older brother? He’s 19 andI’m 18.Firstly, history need not repeat itself i.e. yourboyfriend need not behave like your brother as

they are two different persons, BUT, one mustlearn from history and be aware i.e. see whetheryour boyfriend expresses his anger in sociallyacceptable ways or not. If there are signs of

verbal abuse or even a push or a shove, thenbeware, this could be a sign for things to come –put an end to it immediately by asserting yourselfwith him; he must know that you will not standfor this. However, if he gets angry due to adifference of opinion, expresses it through wordswithout humiliating you and attacking your self-worth, and sorts out the difference throughcommunication, then he is normal and there isnothing to be concerned about. However, both ofyou are still young; understand each other betterbefore you get serious about the relationship.

Psychogenic erectile dysfunctionI read your piece regarding masturbation a fewweeks ago. It was very pacifying. I can attainvery good erection whenever I masturbate inprivacy. However, when I attempted sexualintercourse with my fiancé last week, I could notachieve good erection and thus could notperform intercourse. Why did such a thinghappen? I am deeply disturbed. Please guide. It is a common occurrence. Sex before marriageis invariably associated with guilt, hesitation, fearand self-doubt. These feelings affect erection(Psychogenic erectile dysfunction). Moreover, girls with a moral upbringing are invariably

reluctant to indulge, or fail to actively participatein intercourse before marriage. Invariably, theyagree for intercourse only under emotionalcompulsion and thus fail to give a free andspontaneous response during the act. The lackof response from the partner also affects one’slevel of sexual excitement and subsequently theerection.

Reliance Industries has refutedallegations by the Aam Aadmi

Party (AAP) that oilministersManiShankar Aiyar and S Jaipal Reddywere removed because they didnot favour the company, sayingthe “malafide propaganda” was“factually incorrect.” Terming as“malafide propaganda” AAP’s alle-gation that Aiyar had to go be-cause he opposed RIL’s move toraise KG-D6 capital expenditure2.5 times, the company said Aiyarleft the oilministry in January 2006while the revised USD 8.8 billionfield development plan was sub-mitted in October 2006.On allegations that Reddy was

removed because he opposedhigher gas prices for RIL, the com-pany said, “It was Jaipal Reddy(and not current Oil Minister MVeerappa Moily) who requestedfor the appointment of the DrRangarajan Committee in May2012. It was on this committee’srecommendations, the CCEA ap-proved the revised gas prices(fromApril 2014).”The RangarajanCommittee suggested that domes-tically produced gas should bepriced at an average of global hubrates and the cost of importing liq-uid gas (LNG) into India. Accord-ing to this formula, the price of gasis being increased to about USD 8per unit in April. The current rateof USD 4.205 per million Britishthermal units for gas from RIL’seastern offshore KG-D6 field ex-pires onMarch 31. “The prices hadto be revised not because of theelections but because the prevail-ing price formula ceases to bevalid with effect from April 1,2014,” RIL said in documents it re-leased giving a detailed account offacts and arguments aimed atcountering its critics. On AAP’s allegation that the

price hike would result in a wind-fall of Rs 54,000 crore for RIL, thecompany said the new rates willraise the revenue earned on thecountry’s entire gas production byRs 26,000 crore. “Of this increase,Rs 12,000 crore comes back to thegovernment as royalty, profit pe-troleum, taxes and dividend. Theshare of RIL and its partners isonly Rs 3,000 crore (not Rs 54,500crore), which goes tomeeting cap-ital as well as operational costs be-fore it can be counted as profit,” itsaid. Gas from KG-D6 barelymakes up 15 per cent of the na-

tion’s entire production of the fuel.Responding to an allegation that

the cost of KG-D6 gas productionwas less than USD 1 per mmBtu,the firm said, “The cost of produc-tion as alleged is nothing but post-production costs between thewell-head and delivery point, which in 2009-10was estimated asUSD 0.89 per mmBtu for thatyear.” Apart from the post-produc-tion cost of USD 0.89, expenditureis incurred on discovery, appraisal, development production andmaintenance, it said.“The figure was required be-

cause royalty on gas producedwasto be paid at the well head value, whose value had to be derived bysubtracting the post-well headcost (USD 0.89) from the approvedprice of USD 4.2 per mmBtu.“Post-production cost betweenthe well head and delivery point isonly a small component of thetotal cost of production,” RIL said.To calculate the cost of produc-tion, in addition to the post-pro-duction cost between well headand delivery point of USD 0.89 permmBtu, the expenditure incurredon discovery, appraisal, develop-ment production and mainte-nance will need to be considered.Reacting to AAP’s allegation thatthe government had offered wellsto RIL, the company said nodrilled wells or discovered fieldsweremade available to companiesthrough NELP (New ExplorationLicensing Policy).“KG-D6 was offered as a deep

water exploration block with littledata and no drilled wells with dis-coveries” and the company had putin its risk capital to find gas, RILsaid, adding that, there was “noteven an iota of substance” in the al-legation that it deliberately reducedgas production and hoarded thefuel in anticipation of the higherprice. Hoarding is technically im-possible. Any attempt to hold backproduction in an existing field im-mediately shows up in pressureanomalies in the affected wells.“Eachwell is like the release valve ofa huge pressure cooker where theoil and gas has literally been cook-ing for millions of years - hold backgas in one and the pressure differ-ence is immediately apparent in thenext. Simply put, if gas is beinghoarded, pressure in all producingwells cannot decline uniformly be-cause pressure decline is a sure signthat the pressure cooker is runningout of steam,” it added.

In2013, M&E industry's growth rateremained muted, with a slow GDPgrowth and a weak rupee. The in-dustry grew at 11.8% over 2012 andtouched Rs 91,800 crore. How does it feel to host such a prestigious show?I feel both honoured and privileged to be part of this prestigious venture and to be directed by a legend suchas Shyam Benegal so early in my career. Having grown up watching ‘Bharat Ek Khoj’, it is very special forme to have worked with Shyam sir, theman responsible for somuch that is admirable in and right aboutHindi cinema over the last 30 years. Possibly one of the most erudite people I've met, the time I wasblessed to spend with Shyam Babu has been such a pleasure, a lesson and an eye-opener for me.He is a very alert director and comes always prepared on the sets with all his homework done.

How did you bag such a well-conceived show? When Atul (Tiwari) sir and Shama Zaidi, both the writers of the series first narrated to me acouple of episodes of 'Samvidhaan', I was stunned by how dramatic the story of the birth ofthe Indian Constitution was, and impressed by the glorious tale. Atul sir and Shama ma'amare stalwart writers of the industry and dramatising the Constituent Assembly debates into adrama with such apparent ease is a feat they must be applauded for and I was ready to hostthe show.

How was it like working on the show?Just speaking their beautifully etched, poetic Hindi and Urdu dialogues has been my greatestpleasure and my toughest challenge. For the first time in the history of Indian film ortelevision, a shooting has taken place within the actual precincts of the Parliament of India. Ifeel honoured to have been the sole actor involved in that shoot. I can say that after having shotfor 'Samvidhaan' I am a doubly proud Indian. Our fore-fathers have envisaged and put togethera Constitution for our country that is commendable in every way and the story of its birth is onethat every Indian should be aware and proud of.

What is ‘Samvidhaan’ all about?'Samvidhaan' tells the story about how the constitution of India came to be, what it is, and is based on

the Constituent Assembly debates of 1946-1949 and on in-depth historical research. The TV series thatfeatures stalwarts of Hindi Art Cinema like Rajit Kapoor, Ila Arun, Dalip Tahil, Divya Dutta, K.K. Raina,

Sachin Kedekar, Rajeshwari Sachdev, Tom Alter and Neeraj Kabi among others, will be aired on the RajyaSabha channel in 45-minute episodes.

"They arequestion marks about his captaincy," he said.Asked about the possibility of PCB appointingShahid Afridi as captain for next World Cup,Wasim said this was something for the boardto ponder and decide. "All I would say is thatwe need to have a brave and aggressivecaptain for the World Cup. Because we needto play positive cricket to do well," he added.Wasim said Pakistan had adopted the wrongapproach for the Asia Cup final where it wasdefeated by Sri Lanka. "I thought the decisionto bat first was not correct, we should havestuck with our winning formula throughout thetournament."

PCB ruing Pakistan's wastedopportunities during ICC revampKKAARRAACCHHII:: The present set-up in the PakistanCricket Board (PCB) is still ruing a goldenopportunity wasted by the deposed chairmanof the board, Zaka Ashraf who declined achance for Pakistan cricket to make bigfinancial gains and have a bigger say inworld cricket affairs. According to a reliablePCB official, BCCI had last month offeredsome strong incentives to PCB to support thestructural changes in the InternationalCricket Council (ICC) that were championedby India, Australia and England. "Some of theincentives offered to Pakistan in pure moneyterms guaranteed earnings of around 200million dollars over the next few years fromplaying bilateral series with India and othercountries and more rewarding broadcastingdeals," the source told PTI.

PARIS: Holders Bayern Mu-nich kept their hopes aliveof becoming the first team

to retain the Champions Leaguetrophy while Atletico Madrid alsoprogressed to the quarter-finalsof this season's competition. Bayern

who have reached the final of thepast two Champions Leaguecampaigns were held 1-1 in Mu-nich by Arsenal, but just as theydid last year against the same op-position at the same stage, theGermans went through, this time3-1 on aggregate yesterday. How-ever Bayern's joy at goingthrough was somewhat souredafter Arsenal coach ArseneWenger accused Dutch wingArjen Robben of diving through-out the two legs."Robben dived tonight (he was

told to get up by the referee whenhe went down early in the sec-ond-half in the penalty area) andhe dived in the first leg," saidWenger. Robben, who won apenalty for Bayern in the first legwhich saw the Arsenal goalkeepersent off, was dismissive of the re-marks."Great managers don't need to

resort to claims like that. I don'twant to have to defend myselfagainst remarks like that," hesaid. Guardiola, who has won the

trophy twice as coach ofBarcelona, looked annoyed whentold about the comments.

"The best team won over thetwo legs that is what happened,"he said. Atletico -- who are thesurprise package of the competi-tion this season as well as in theLa Liga title race -- reached theirfirst Champions League quarter-

final since 1997, when their pres-ent coach Diego Simeone was inthe side, with a far more em-phatic 4-1 win at home to Italianside AC Milan, to prevail 5-1 onaggregate. It left Italy without a side re-

maining in the competition asNapoli and Juventus went out inthe group stage.Simeone, a former combative

Argentinian international mid-fielder who was capped over 100times, said he was proud of hisside and tried to play down ex-pectations by saying Atleticowere very much the underdogsstill.

"It is a very nice mo-ment, after such a longtime," said the 43-year-old

Simeone. "But we are still at the begin-

ning of the knockout stages, andwe must continue to get better. Adifficult and dangerous quarter-final awaits us and we will have torecuperate and continue on thepath we are following. There willbe seven great sides in the lasteight and one which will be veryenthusiastic and capable of up-setting the others."As for DiegoCosta he continues to progress,he has great physical strengthand presence. He reminds me ofsome of the great strikers."In Munich Bastian Schwein-

steiger opened the scoring for thehosts -- his first goal since Octo-ber -- before Lukas Podolskiequalised for Arsenal against hisformer team, just as he had donein last season's first leg match. The hosts could have won the

match itself right at the end butThomas Mueller's penalty wassaved by Lukasz Fabianski.

All change as Formula One enters new eraThe prospect of seeing Sebast-

ian Vettel beaten for the firsttime since last July is just one ofthe many novelties Sunday's sea-son-opening Australian FormulaOne Grand Prix promises to de-liver.Just how much trouble Vettel's

Red Bull team might be in is oneof the questions waiting for ananswer as the sport's unpre-dictable new turbo era whooshesinto action at Melbourne's AlbertPark circuit. The quadruple world cham-

pion won the last nine races of2013 but the 26-year-old Germanspent much of his time duringthe pre-season tests in Spain andBahrain watching the car beingworked on in the garage.Red Bull are braced for a reality

check as they and partners Re-nault work against the clock to fixthe troublesome 1.6 litre V6 hy-brid turbo engine and its compli-cated new energy recoverysystems.Rivals Mercedes, under new

leadership following the depar-ture of Ross Brawn, have beenracking up the laps with far lesshassle."Mercedes have got a bit of a

march on people. They investedmore, they invested earlier. They've got themselves into agood position," Red Bull teamprincipal Christian Horner told

reporters."If Mercedes were to finish two

laps ahead of the opposition inMelbourne, that wouldn't be asurprise, based on what we'veseen in pre-season testing. It'smassive. "From what we can seeat the moment, all the Mercedespowered teams are in pretty de-cent shape and we're not."We're on the back foot, and

have a lot of ground to catch up,"added the Briton, who now hasAustralian Daniel Ricciardo in thelineup following compatriotMark Webber's retirement.

HAMILTON CONFIDENTHorner's words may be a part ofthe pre-season mind games, repositioning Red Bull as under-dogs but Mercedes drivers LewisHamilton and Nico Rosberg have

sounded quietly confident abouta car that is sleeker than many ofits 'ugly' new-look rivals."With all the changes within

the sport and the hard work that'sbeen going on within the team, Ibelieve this can be our year to re-ally show what we're capable of,"said Hamilton, the 2008 worldchampion with McLaren."I feel like I'm equipped with

the tools I need to succeed. I can'twait to get started," added theBriton, whose win in Hungarylast July was the last by anyoneother than Vettel.Ferrari will be hoping to chal-

lenge with their new lineup ofchampions following the returnof Finland's 2007 title winnerKimi Raikkonen - triumphant inMelbourne for Lotus last year - topartner Fernando Alonso.
