Toronto film studiosrecognized by the cityToronto, the third largest film productioncentre in the world, now has its own identifiablemoviemaking neighbourhood.

The area from Carlaw to Leslie andEastern to Lakeshore South has been declaredthe Studio District. The area will be suitablyidentified by colourful new street signs, usingStudio District as the identifying theme, butalso recognizing Cinespace, Cinevillage andShowline studios.

The various buildings in the district totalmore than 58,500 square metres. More than$60 million has been spent on the state-of-the-art facilities, with an estimated $60 millionmore to be spent over the next three years.

Since the district's inception four yearsago, more than 300 national and internationalfilms, inclusive of feature films, short features, movies of the week, music videos andcommercials have been produced in thesefacilities.

The city's recognition of the area washeralded by the First Annual Studio DistrictFestival, an all -day affair on Sept. 19.Numerous display booths outlined the futuredevelopment of the Studio District, the industryand the area.

Myles' single now out;album follows in OctoberAlannah Myles' debut album sold a millioncopies in Canada and 4.5 million worldwide,so expectations are high for her follow-uprelease, Rockinghorse.

The Atlantic album is expected on Oct.13 while the first single, Song Instead Of AKiss, was released on Sept. 17. Myles andcollaborator Nancy Simmonds wrote the musicto Song Instead Of A Kiss after Robert Priest,a Toronto writer and performer, gave her oneof his poems. "I'm singing to everyone andI'm inviting them to share in the pain thatwould inspire me to sing this way," Mylessays of the song. "It's for everyone in theworld who has ever experienced the sadnessof not being able to physically hold on to aneternal, clinging love."

For the new album, Myles has rejoinedforces with writer/producer David Tyson, andsongwriter/collaborator Christopher Ward, who co -wrote her smash hit, Black Velvet.

"This record would not be what it is if itwasn't for the amount of tumultuous emotionI've put into it -- that, combined with secondrecord pressure and the personal pressure I'veplaced upon myself, as well as a certainloneliness," Myles says of recording thealbum.

The Toronto native has experiencedloneliness since she has been living in LosAngeles for two years after an 18 -monthworldwide tour. "I've been living in a verystrange place without family and friends. Itcame as a shock after living in one city all mylife," she says.

Rockinghorse will be released worldwideand Myles will follow it with an extensiveworld tour.

HMV plumped up its troops, not to mentionthe majors, for its fall and winter offensive, with a giant blowout banquet at the HarbourCastle Westin. The banquet was the finalback-slapping, in-house rewarding and free-for-all that closed out the company's annualconvention. Besides invited guests, of whichthere were about 50, there were 163 HMVemployees on hand for the convention, whichleft another 500 in the trenches taking care ofbusiness. Entertainment was supplied by IrisDeMent, Susan Craig, Barenaked Ladies, andPaul Alofs, who told his people that theyshould strive "to be a little better every weekand we'll survive. We can't stagnate." Whatimpressed me was the genuine employee/management camaraderie, obviously the glue

that keeps this organization together. Kindamade me feel warm all over. Who can be moreimportant? These are the people who talk upand get the product to the consumer. (EC:Paul Alofs was part of the entertainment . . . ?)

Dave Charles . . . back when!!! I wasflipping through RPM' s archives the otherday, which I often do, and found this gem. Inthe March 11, 1967 issue, Dave Charles, theteen jock at CJBQ Belleville, Ont., was askingfor help in finding a St. Bernard dog to representthe At The Top Show. "A St. Bernard with astar image, a definite asset." By the way,Dave's Picks for that week were Girl Crazy byThe Charmaines, Mandala's Opportunity, andShip Of Dreams by Quiet Jungle. (EC: He'sstill plugging the "star image. ')

Smoochin' and Cruisin' Music??? In thatsame issue of March 11, 1967 was a report thatLarry Dickinson was the host of the newSmoochin' and Cruisin' Music show at CJCJWoodstock, N.B. (EC: That 's when radio hadcharacter and characters . . . !)

Honest Ed ... the postman!!! Toronto'sown world famous department store andshowbiz entrepreneur, Honest Ed Mirvish, sure knows how to gather a crowd. RussellLazar sends news that Ed's adding a newbargain retail postal facility to his Bloor Streetstore, beginning Sept. 22. But it's no ordinarypost office. Like everything he opens, this oneis going to be a celebration as well. Besidesdiscounting all goods and services, he'soffering 42 cent stamps for 34 cents for thewhole week. The last time they were that pricewas in 1985. The 78 -year old Ed, dressed as apostal counter clerk (counter jacket, orangetie and postie cap), will be there handing outfree classic souvenir stamps, the same size asan official stamp, bearing a likeness of Ed, butwith a value disclaimer of "zilch" at the bottomleft hand corner. (EC: There's no businesslike . . . !)

Two bags full ... It's amazing what you seewhen you're prowling the hallways of majorcompanies ... unnoticed, of course. There, infull view, taking out two bags of garbage . . .

on second thought . . . never mind! (EC: Areyou in love again . . . ?)

The Bill Ballard appetite . . . ! I neverbelieved the stories about Bill's appetite, butI sat with him at Shopsy's birthday party. Idiscovered that he could and probably did eat16 corned beef sandwiches atone sitting at theCarnegie Deli in New York City, a story that'sbeen circulating around the industry for years. Now I believe it. When he finished the 16th,all the help lined up and applauded and theowner came over and asked, "Are you anactor?" At the Shopsy party, the chef broughthim a large plate piled high with tongue andrye bread, and then another. When he finishedthat he went up and helped himself to yetanother, and when that was finished, the helpfulchef brought him one more. I think he ate agood eight to ten pounds of tongue and all thefat that goes with it, right before my eyes. Andhe washed it down with three barrels, and Imean barrels, of Red Pop. Believe it or not!(EC: I don't believe it . . . 9

A book on Bryan Adams ... ? There's abook now available on Canada's famous "un-Canadian" rocker. But guess what? Writtenby Sandy Robertson, and titled Bryan Adams:The Illustrated Biography, the 64 -page bookis available only through the New York officesof Music Sales Corporation. It carries a pricetag of $10.95 U.S., and it's pretty current, right up to his controversial hit (Everything IDo) I Do It For You. They're bannering thebook as "an insightful and fun look" at theCanadian rocker. (EC: I hope there's a fewquotes included . . . ?)

There's lotsa money in country ... ! Nowonder Garth Brooks wants to retire. He made$44 million in the last two years, which gainshim a #13 birth on Forbes Magazine's list ofthe top 40 money-makers in the entertainmentbusiness. The poor New Kids On The Blockwill only pull in about $8 million this year, afew mill off the $54 million they made lastyear. Hey! It pays to give the finger to youraudience. With earnings of $47 million overthe last couple of years, Axl Rose's Guns N'Roses bulleted up 18 points to #10. (EC:Maybe he'll send a care package to DKD!)

A good . .. omen??? The hurricane thatripped through parts of Hawaii gave the WarnerMusic Canada crew a bit of a scare and 30 -footsurf. Helmsman Stan Kulin got a giggle out ofhis group with, "Even Mother Nature tried toattend a Warner Music Canada convention."This wasn't just an R&R trip. There wasbusiness to look after and everyone was excitedabout the fall line-up. "It's just mind -boggling," says Stan. "As far as market shareis concerned, we're back where we were twoyears ago, before losing Geffen." (EC: Nowall you have to do is sell it . . . 9VISITORS

More to FACTOR than FACTOR!Re: FACTOR - the first ten years - RPMAugust 22, 1992. What's the old line aboutsuccess having many fathers but failure havingbut one? If we use this as the basis fordiscussion, then FACTOR has indeed beensuccessful. Unfortunately, your article omittedseveral of the fathers (or mothers) and alsosome of the key reasons for the formation andcontinuing existence of FACTOR.

The history of FACTOR goes back fartherthan 1982. The concept had its genesis inconcurrent discussions that tookplacebetweenBernie Finkelstein and Bob Wood at CHUM.Richard Hahn discussed the issue with JimSward at Rogers and Tom Williams with Jim

Changing of the guard. Three new songsenter the Top Five on the Hit Tracks chart.Patty Smyth & Don Henley's Sometimes LoveJust Ain't Enough remains at No. 1 with BryanAdam's Do I Have To Say The Words veryclose behind. Enid and Stay are also withinreach of hitting No. 1.

A Lovely name! Love & Sas' Once In ALifetime jumps 15 places to No. 36. If the songreaches No. 1, they will be the third groupfiled under the word Love to reach the top ofthe chart. The words Royal and Rush alreadyhave three filed under them, but the leader isYoung with four. Name the four artists filedunder the word Young who've had a No. 1 hit.Hint: only one has been in the last 20 years.

Maybe the first of the year. BarenakedLadies' Enid climbs to No. 3 on the Hit Trackschart, while their album is in its sixth week atthe top of the Albums chart. The group couldbecome the first act this year to simultaneouslyhold the top spots on both charts. Comparethat to last year when Tom Cochrane, Stingand Madonna all did it, and Bryan Adams heldthem for three straight weeks.

The end of country? Not even close. However, Billy Ray Cyrus drops out of theTop Five on the Albums chart for the first timein 12 weeks. Even in Canada's strong countryareas, the scene is the same. Sam's ChinookCentre store in Calgary reports Bobby Brownas their top seller while Music World Calgarylists Barenaked Ladies. In Edmonton, HMV'sWest Edmonton Mall store also lists BarenakedLadies at No. 1 while A&A' s Edmonton reportsDance Mix '92 at the top.

Hot country. While sales of Billy Ray arefinally slowing down, other country artists areon the rise. Travis Tritt bullets to No. 39 withT -R -O -U -B -L -E and Vince Gill climbs 14spots to No. 45. Making its debut on the chartis More Country Heat, which enters at No. 77.

The four Youngsters! The four artists filedunder Young who've had a No. 1 song are:Young Canada Singers (Canada in 1967),Young Holt Unlim ited (Soulful Strut in 1969),Neil Young (Heart Of Gold in 1972) and PaulYoung (Everytime You Go Away in 1985).

McLaughlin at Moffat. All three reported theirconversations to Earl Rosen, CIRPA' sexecutive director.

The subjects of allthese discussions werethe same: 1) Cancon was here to stay and itwas time broadcasters and the record industrystarted working cooperatively instead of asantagonists and; 2) How money spentexpended on stations' promise ofperformancecommitments could be better used and achievebenefits for both the radio and recordingindustries.

While the meetings started separately,Vic Wilson and Earl Rosen of CIRPA initiatedfurther discussions and these quickly becameintegrated. After considerable discussion andplanning, FACTOR came into being in 1982.What was also not made clear is WHO themusic industry representatives were; they were

The Richardson familymaintaining prominenceJackie Richardson, by recently completing alengthy run in an intimate and charming cabaretportrayal of the legendary Mabel Mercer atToronto's Top 0' The Senator (RPM - July 25/92), has chalked up yet another success storyin her showbusiness career.

In a July 11/92 issue of RPM, it wasrevealed that Richardson and her family movedto Canada (Richmond Hill, Ont.) fromPittsburgh when she was seven. Her fatherwas a jazz singer, so it was only natural thatmusic was a big part of her life.

Richardson honed her vocal talent andtravelled extensively, performing with someof the name groups of the '70s including thePlatters and the Avalons. She returned hometo Toronto in 1975, at which time she becameinvolved in musical theatre, which spun offinto television and films.

Although Jackie is a name synonymouswith theatre, blues and jazz, the talent in theRichardson family doesn't end there. Herdaughter Kim is following in her footsteps. After three European tours as a backup singerfor Roch Voisine, she is currently a regular onthe Quebec TV series, Beau et chaud.

Sister Betty and niece Tonjha, along withJackie, are also members of Kaleefah, aToronto vocal group. They are currently onrelease with Listen To The World, an albumcomprising African, Latin, and North Americandance rhythms and African and NorthAmerican harmonies. The album was releasedon the Toronto -based K.C. label (RPM -Albums - Aug. 1/92). A video of I Can Hear AMother Crying, on which Jackie is a featuredperformer, will be released shortly. Jackie iscurrently involved in Catwalk, a TV seriesnow shooting weekly episodes until March.

Another Richardson, Gairey, who is alsoa singer, owns and produces the live shows ofthe Polka Dot Door TV series.

Getting all the Richardsons together onthe same stage was a chore hinging on theimpossible, in view of their tight and diverseschedules. However, the impossible became areality when, several years ago, the entirefamily appeared in a revue at the ImperialRoom of the Royal York Hotel. The Richardsonshowbiz dynasty continues.

ALL key executives in CIRPA that wereinstrumental in making FACTOR a reality. The business plan for FACTOR was alsodrafted by CIRPA. To be dismissed in one lineas "other representatives of the Canadianmusic industry" completely fails to portraythe true story.

Two other issues are also totally ignoredin the story. First, the key role that CIRPAplayed as administrator of FACTOR in itsearly years and, second, the critical part itplayed in lobbying for: 1) the Sound RecordingDevelopment Program which provides thebulk of FACTOR' s funding; 2) Working withthe francophone community to assist in thesetting up of MusicAction and; 3) Ensuringthat the SRDP funds flowed to FACTOR andMusicAction for administration through anindustry run organization, rather than througha government -controlled body such asTelefilm.

Obtaining a music industry program(SRDP) and getting it administered by theprivate sector and not by the government (thefirst time this had ever occurred) was no smallachievement, one of which CIRPA is justlyproud.

The SRDP did not suddenly fall from thesky in a moment of government benevolenceas the article implies. Initial discussions were,in fact, started with CIRPA in September of1979. The time given up by CIRPA board andstaff from their regular day-to-day activitieswas a tremendous long term commitment thatrequired a great deal of selfless effort for thebenefit of the industry at large. The whole ofthe recording sector in Canada benefits from;these efforts.

The reality of history is very clear. Boththe independent recording sector and radiobroadcasters have benefitted from FACTOR.There has been more product to play and selland the initiative has been very well receivedby the CRTC, the body that has the jurisdictionover broadcasters and decision making powerconcerning licenses.

To conclude, let me reiterate this point:without CIRPA there would be no FACTOR,something which should not be forgotten andwhich this article clearly did.Brian ChaterExecutive DirectorCanadian IndependentRecord Production Association

With the above announcement in the RPM issueof Oct. 14, 1967, Warner Bros Records flewsolo In Canada.

Chinook Records, Winnipeg's M.C.T. RecordDistributors, and Avalake Distributors, inAmherst, Nova Scotia.

Warner had seven singles on the RPM100 chart the week of Oct. 14/67. They werethe Association's Never My Love, Peter Paul& Mary's I Dig Rock Roll Music, AnythingGoes by Harpers Bizarre, Petula Clark's TheCat In The Window, Nancy Sinatra'sLightning's Girl, Purple Haze by Jimi Hendrix, and Kitty Doyle by Dino, Desi and Billy.

Under Middleton's guidance thecompany began to grow on a gradual, yet firmbasis. There was even some emphasis placedon Canadian acts. During its first convention(Jan. 30 -Feb. 1/70), when Atlantic and Atcowere part of the group, Middleton offeredincentive bonuses of $150 to employees whodiscovered new Canadian talent (RPM - Feb.14/70). When the company began flying theWEA (Warner/Elektra/Atlantic) banner (RPM- Nov. 4/72), it had 19 per cent of the RPM 100Albums chart. Two were Gordon Lightfootalbums (Old Dan's Records and Don Quixote),there was a Neil Young album (Harvest), anda certified Gold Leaf Award album by AliceCooper (School's Out).

Middleton, who had just passed his 50thbirthday, shocked the industry when on Nov.29/82, he announced his retirement from thefirm to take effect on January 31, 1983 (RPM- Dec. 4/82). Joe Edwards, one of the foundingmembers of the Canadian operation, and onewho was highly respected in the industry, alsoannounced his resignation, which would takeeffect on March 15, 1983.

Montreal native Stan Kulin, whoMiddleton had brought into the company in1982 as vice president of sales, took over aspresident of WEA on February 1, 1983. Priorto his move to WEA, Kulin had been second incommand of CBS Records Canada for fouryears. Before that, he headed up United Artists, and also worked for RCA Victor.

Celebrating 40 years in the business thisyear, Kulin began his career in the recordindustry in the mail room of RCA Victor, which was based in Montreal. He went on tobecome a valuable player in RCA'sinternational division, travelling the world. He was anxious, however, to return to Canadawith his young family and, after a brief stint atRCA's Montreal office, he took command ofthe Canadian operation for United Artists.

This month marks the 25th anniverary ofthe Warner Canadian operation, and to preservea "special memory" for his employees, Kulinis hosting a convention in Hawaii.

Kulin was contacted by telephone inHawaii just before the scheduled meetings gotunderway. He revealed that the trip to Hawaiiwas planned "very quietly" two years ago. "Alot of the people who will be here probablywould never have the opportunity to seeHawaii. I wanted to be where the weatherwould be good. We've had our meetings inCanada for the past 24 years and will prob ablyhave them in Canada for the next 24 years, but

this was a special occasion and I wanted myemployees to share it with me."

Although the convention was plannedbefore the recession took hold and devastatedthe marketplace, which still hasn't recovered,Kulin is quick to point out, "I didn'tplan this, but it looks like we're going into the fourthquarter dominating the charts (29 per cent ofthe RPM 100 Albums chart and 22 per cent ofthe RPM 100 Hit Tracks chart). Our fourth

quarter releases, if they come as they arescheduled, will certainly give us our strongestrelease schedule of any quarter I can think of.It's going to be a fantastic fourth quarter forus. I'm hoping to motivate ourpeople to breaksome unknown acts along with all thesuperstars we have coming."

Kulin was asked what his formula forsuccess was. "There's no magic formula tothis business. The assets of a music companytoday aren't buildings, desks or computers. The assets are its artists. And if your artistsgive you the product, and if you concentrateon the music part, you're going to besuccessful.

"Warner's success has always been builton its A&R strength. I think where Warnergets overlooked, having been given theproduct, they are able to do more with it thanmost other companies would. Warner is anartist friendly company. We don't try and

complicate the business. We get down to thesimple facts and we concentrate on pushingthe music. I don't think you can say that otherpeople would have been able to be moresuccessful with that music than we have been.If you look at all areas, we tend to keep thingssimple. And when you keep things simple, you're going to make fewer mistakes."

Although he agreed somewhat that mostof the international product released is ready-made for the charts, he bristled at the suggestionthat the records gain chart action solely through

Quebec branch manager Jacques Chenler, AlMair of Early Morning Productions and MikeDoyle, seen at 1970 convention.

spillover action from the U.S. "No, thisproductwould not be successful on its own. Someonehas to get it to the attention of the consumerand that's where we come in. Sure you canhave the best guns in the business, but if youdon't have the ammunition, the guns aren'tgoing to do you any good.

"I don't pretend that we're not gettinggood product. With the next Madonna, it'sobviously pre -sold, but I get more pleasureout of selling 100,000 copies of Blue Rodeo'salbum, or breaking Alannah Myles worldwide, even though she's signed to the U.S."

Of significant change at Warner Music isthe heavy concentration on and the open doorpolicy toward Canadian signings. In the 10years Kulin has been in command, Warner hasdeveloped a full complement of Canadianrecording acts.

"The theme of this convention is that ourprimary responsibility today is to breakCanadian acts. There was a deliberate efforton my part to get us heavily involved in theCanadian content game.

"I think our artists are as good as any inthe world, and I think they deserve to be heard. You can criticize us for signing the wrongartists from time to time, but that's true of anyrecord company. But I've always felt that theCanadian inferiority complex is totallyuncalled for. And truthfully, if you look backeven into the '70s, one of the problems withEnglish Canadians is that by being next to theUnited States, they have very easy access togo down there and sign. But I go back to 1967with the Guess Who when I was with RCA.And I go back prior to that with artists likeHank Snow. And if you want to go back evenfurther, an artist like Dick Haynes wasCanadian. We tend to look at these people asAmericans, but the fact is they were born hereand it was so easy to go to the States, and theyend up there. English Canadians are too downon themselves, and they've gotten a bad rapWarner's had seven singles on the RPM 100 ofOct. 14/67, Including the Association's NeverMy Love at #4. It Jumped to #1 the followingweek.

from their own media. They go unrecognized."Kulin was asked if he felt that Canadian

performers now have their own unique sound."I've always been of the opinion that ourmusic is different. I think that today, with a lotof the young bands around, like Blue Rodeo, and Barenaked Ladies, there is a certainuniqueness to our sound. There certainly is adifference in the country. We are very closeto America, but we're not Americans. I sense

Joe Edwards, Warner's comptroller In 1970 (r)with manager of production control JerryStamen.

the Canadians who speak English are comingout of their shell. They're developing aconfidence in themselves that didn't exist 20years ago. I'm also looking at it from beyondthe music business. This trend of our bestbrains, our best minds, going down to the U.S.is not peculiar just to our business. It exists inmost businesses."

Kul in recognizes that this trend isbeginning to reverse. "It is certainly noticeablein the music business, but I think it is reversingin other businesses. I think that Canadiansgoing through this trauma of unity arebeginning to think of what we have in thiscountry, and they're quite happy with whatthey have and are now developing a pride init. I think it augers well for the future. We arethinking less as Americans at this point and, hopefully, we will be thinking more asCanadians in the near future."

Interestingly enough, Warner Bros.Pictures, the genesis of Wamer Bros. Records,(now the giant Time/Warner conglomerate),was founded by Jack Warner, a Canadian, who was born in New Brunswick.
