CKDS sheds easy listeningfor Y 95 Classic RockHamilton's easy listening CKDS is scheduled tobe replaced August 30th at 5:30 am with ClassicRock - Y95. Boasts Darren Wasylyk, AssistantProgram Director and Director of Marketing forthe new station, "Y 95 will deliver a steady dietof Classic Rock greats from the '60s, '70s, '80sand today, without the heavy metal kids stuff."

The new format is targetting the 25 to 44rock listener with product by The Doors, EricClapton, Neil Young, Bryan Adams, April Wine,ZZ Top, Elton John, The Beatles, Rod Stewart,Genesis, The Eagles, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylanand other Classic Rock superstars.

Wasylyk goes on to point out that "With100,000 watts of power, Classic Rock- Y 95 hasone of the strongest radio signals in all ofOntario." He goes on to point out that "Althoughthe station's audience is primarily located in theHamilton/Burlington/Niagara regions ofSouthwestern Ontario, it can be heard crystalclear throughout Metropolitan Toronto and asfar away as London, Ontario, and Erie,Pennsylvania.

Dummymania continueswith second singleThe Crash Test Dummies have been raisingspirits across the country with their BMG debutThe Ghosts That Haunt Me. A highly energizedpromotion and across the board airplay hasresulted in over 160,000 copies sold in Canada. They are currently charting with the secondsingle from the album, the title track.

The "fever" even penetrated Manitoba'sLegislative Assembly where, on July 24, GerryMcAlpine, M.L.A. Sturgeon Creek, complimented the band on their success. "Mr.Speaker," he said, "I am extremely proud to risein the house today to pay tribute to some membersof my community and to share in the successstory for all Manitobans. The music album, TheGhosts That Haunt Me, by the local Winnipeggroup, Crash Test Dummies, was simultaneouslyreleased by BMG in Canada and Arista in theUnited States on April 5, 1991. On June 24, thealbum reached gold status, and on July 19, itwent platinum... I am sure all members of theHouse join with me in thanking the Roberts fortheir loyalty to Winnipeg and Manitoba andwish them every success and good health in alltheir future endeavours and productions."

describes the past few months as being "a prettybusy time," goes on to point out that, "Basically,it's everybody getting geared up for the fall, which is going to be our big time with the newBryan Adams release and the new U2 albumcoming out."

Staff will get a chance to hear the entirefifteen tracks from the Adams release, whichincludes the hit single, (Everything I Do) I DoIt For You. The cassette single is fast approachingthe three million sales mark worldwide. Reiddescribes that feat in one word; "ecstatic". Thesecond Adams single, Can't Stop This ThingWe Started, shipped to radio August 28. "Thealbum is absolutely spectacular. It's going to bemassive," adds Reid. The album Waking UpThe Neighbours ships to retail September 23.

West End Girls and Kish, two other recentsignings to the label, have been doing quite wellover the summer but Reid stresses concern overnew signings in regards to the proposedimmigration regulations in the US. Should theybe passed, Reid says, "It could be devastating to

PolyGram releasingheavy hitters for fallEverybody seems to have their own cat to let outof the bag for the fall. Strong debuts and longawaited comebacks are in the plenty. PolyGramis no exception with its impressive list of releaseslined up for the next couple of months.

By far, the biggest release will be the longover due On Every Street, Dire Straits newalbum. A nine -piece band will be assaulting theworld when Dire Straits launches "the largesttour known to mankind", following theSeptember 6th release.

Bon Jovi's Richie Sambora will bereleasing his debut solo album entitled StrangerIn This Town. Sambora has called on Bon Joviband mates David Bryan and Tico Tones for thisalbum as well as Tony Levin (Peter Gabriel,King Crimson) and Randy Jackson (Aldo Nova).Contributing songwriters are Bryan, DesmondChild and Jon Bon Jovi.

Japanese electronic giants JVC launchesits own label, Victory Music, distributed byPolyGram in Canada. The first release will beTin Machine's second album, Tin Machine II.The band's line-up remains the same includingDavid Bowie, Reeves Gabrels, Hunt Sales andTony Sales.

the Canadian music industry. There's a clausesaying the artist must be internationallyrecognized before they can get into the US. Theproblem is that most bands get their recognitionout of the US. It's also going to cause headachesfor releases of product down there because wecan't get our bands into the US to back up therelease with a tour."

Fortunately, the visa regulations aren't ineffect yet and it's not to late for the Canadianindustry to loudly voice their concerns. Butshould the new regulations become a reality,Reid says, "We're going to see people gearingtheir business to the UK and Europe."

True North Director Jehanne Languedoc seenwith Sony's Director of Sales Promotions, KlmZeyac, at recent Sony Convention, held In Torontofrom Aug. 23 through 26.

Dire Straits managementencourages vinyl pressingsA week after release, Calling Elvis, the latestCD single by Dire Straits, has made the expectedimpact at radio. The single enters the RPM 100Hit Tracks this week at #70, the second highestentry on the chart, (behind Mariah Carey'sEmotions, at #43).

"The feedback has been quite positive,"says PolyGram's Director of Promotion DavidFreedman. "Most stations have picked up on it."

Freedman also reveals that Sept. 6 is theship date for the band's new album, On EveryStreet. It's also interesting to note that the albumis to be released on vinyl as well, a policy thatPolyGram maintains for some releases, "if wefeel there is a demand," says Freedman, "eitherby pressing a limited quantity or making it

available through our Special Imports Division."In the case of Dire Straits, PolyGram has

pressed 500 pieces in Canada, the first albumpressed domestically in some time.

"We do make it a policy to make vinylavailable on most of our major releases," saysFreedman, "and even on some of our alternativereleases by way of our Special Imports Division. This division is unique in the sense it is a oneway, one shot deal only ... so we don't have toworry about warehousing product or returnsdown the line." However, he does stress "thequantities are very small."

Dire Straits management were apparentlyvery concerned worldwide about not havingvinyl available. Although they didn't insist thatcountries press vinyl, "they made it known theywould appreciate it if most countries pressed upvinyl on the release," says Freedman, concludingwith, "and I think that just about every countrycomplied with their wishes."

There's two sides now .. . 1 The fat isn't inthe fire yet, but it's getting close on that hot HOTitem I didn't tell you about last week. Enter aNew York lawyer . .. a real New York Lawyer, and the plot thickens and the angry get angrier. After all, that's what a New York lawyer issupposed to do, isn't it?

As critics go . . . ! It's too bad some of themdon't. When Michael Bolton headlined Toron-to's CNE Stadium (Aug. 25), the Star's PeterHowell only saw fit to barely mention theopening acts, Celine Dion and Oleta Adams, while John Sakamoto took the time to recognizethe effort and talents of both Celine and Oleta. He was particularly wordy about Celine and shedeserved this kind of praise, and a little criti-cism, which doesn't hurt anyone, if it's doneproperly and Sakamoto was constructive. (EC:Could there be a change going on at the Star ?)

Where there's fire, there's Arne . . . !

Looser CRTC regulations could be disastrousfor jazz, but not without a fight from Arne(Larson) Schwisberg of Jazz Inspiration. Arne, who hosts the popular syndicated jazz radioseries, is taking the CRTC to court, the FederalCourt, that is, for ajudicial review of the CRTC'sdecision. In fact, as I am writing this, Arne'sobjection is being heard via teleconference byCRTC lawyers and an Associate Chief Justiceof the Federal Court based in Ottawa. That wasat 10 am Thursday (Aug 29). Stay tuned. (EC:You've heard the old expression "pissin' in thewind . . . ?" But good luck.)

Late for an important date ... ! Decked outin my best bib and tucker, there I was bumpinginto outgoing crowds from Simpson's, sorry . .

the downtown Toronto Bay store, trying in vainto find the Arcadian Court. No signs, and agrowing number of other lost souls who wereeager to catch the Toronto debut of Sally AnnHowes' one -woman cabaret act. Finally wecollared a security person, who was evencourteous, and worked our way up to the eighthfloor. The confusion in the beginning was wellworth the end result, a cabaret show with class.. Howes and a piano player, that's all. That's

all that was needed, for a nostalgic musical tripback in time. Actually, Howes followed JulieAndrews as star of the Broadway production ofMy Fair Lady. (EC: I remember it well . . . )

Does country music sell . . . ? Well, up tojust recently, country music wasn't a big seller, not in the quantities it's selling today. TheRandy Travis album, Always & Forever, is nowover 500,000 in Canada. Garth Brooks is over200,000 on his No Fences album, and fourmillion in the US. Browsing through HMV'sdowntown Toronto store the other night, I waspleasantly surprised to see country a priority onthe main floor. Lots of great country, the guysabove, along with George Fox, Anne Murray,Michelle Wright, George Strait, Prairie Oyster,Gary Fjellgaard, and the list goes on, and on.(EC: That's what we need, more country out ofthe closet and front -racked . . . !)

Where was the Bay's star . . . ? I wassurprised to learn that the Bay's television star... not Rich Little, but little Bob, wasn't on handfor the opening of the Arcadian Court. Just aswell. The room is a disaster ... very antiseptic, and it must be difficult to work. The stagelooked like it was rolled it in for the show. TheImperial Room it's not. (EC: The last I heard, the Imperial Room was a dance club without aDJ . . !) Speaking of the Bay, doesn't Rich Littledo a great job on those commercials; JackBenny, Jack Nicholson . . . Cher! (EC: Cher ?)

CKDS is the first to bite the dust ... ! Well, the guessing is over as to what one radio stationis doing Sept. 1st. Hamilton's CKDS is nolonger, having been replaced, by the time youread this, by Classic Rock - Y95 (CJXY).Actually, the new format went to air at 5:30 amon Aug. 30, and the signal, which coversHamilton, Burlington and the Niagara regionswith 100,000 watts of power, can even be heardas far away as Metropolitan Toronto, London,Ontario and Erie, Pennsylvania. (EC: Whathappened to Dance . . . ?)

A new subscriber ... ! These new daddies aregetting too smart. Received by fax last week,"Please note the following new subscriber to'RPM Weekly: Lindsay Ellen Deeley. BornAugust 17, 1991. Proud parents are Dave andSandra Deeley. (EC: Cute . . . !)

Celebrity search . . . ? Having dinner atCentro is becoming a pleasant chore, watchingall the celebrities come through the door fromTable # 56, and you know who sits there mostdays. Just recently I saw HMV 's Paul Alofs andCathy Pitt, Wayne Gretsky, The Sun's SylviaTrain with Harold Ballard Jr., Leonard and AnnKennedy, and that's only the nights I was there. On my way out, this guy grabs me and whisperin my ear "Don't mention you saw me here inyour column (chuckle, chuckle)." To which Isaid "right on" and, as I watched him walk outwith a beautiful lady on his arm, I couldn't helpbut wonder who he was. (EC: But he knows whoyou are . . . !)

Guaranteed for how long . . . ? Thatrubberized covering on the stairs at HMV'ssuperstore in downtown Toronto is alreadywearing out. I checked from the basement, up tothe main floor, to the second floor and finally tothe jazz and classical loft ... same thing, all thesteps are wearing. But they're guaranteed forfive years. The guy who guaranteed the material, couldn't have imagined the crowds the storewould attract. Worn out in only three months?Who says retail is dead? (EC: Who would haveimagined . . . ?)

If I were an A& R person ... ! I would be frontand centre at HMV's downtown store everyThursday. The store has introduced a policy ofshowcasing local bands. What a great way to getsober crowd reaction to what could be the nextbig breaking act. (EC: That will fall on deafears. . . !)

The hits are acomin' . . . ! RPM's listeningroom has been busy with previews of some ofthe great material that's coming down the pipe.Had to stock up on our chocolate chip cookies. But, visitors beware, we have a new brand to

COVER STORY - by Pablo Fairhall

Montreal's Paradox are an Obvious PuzzleHailing from Montreal, Paradox have beencharting on RPM's 100 Hit Tracks for twomonths with their single Kiss Me On The Lips. The track was taken from their latest MCArelease, Obvious Puzzle. The band is comprisedof drummer Denis Lavigne, bassist J.F. 'Jeff'Houle and singer Sylvain Cossette, who recentlyspoke with RPM.

The three members have been together forseveral years, having first joined forces as acover band that played extensively acrossEastern Canada. Cossette explains the transitionfrom cover band to recording artists, "Everymember of the band had been playing bars forabout ten years. They (Houle and Lavigne)joined me in Paradox about five years ago andwe were only a cover band at that time. Westarted to write about three years ago after PaulLevesque, our manager, came to see us in a bar.He wanted to sign us, but he wanted to hearoriginal songs. Things started to go well afterthat and we recorded our first album three yearsago." MCA Records Canada in conjunction

with MCA Publishing Inc. in the USgot involvedin the later stages and co -produced the albumproject. Paradox was released in July 1989.

Their self -titled debut did quite well, spawning the hit song and video Waterline, among others. The album allowed the band anopportunity to further their popularity in theEast as well as branch out and tour the rest ofCanada. "It was great. The response was reallygood fora first album," boasts Cossette althoughhe does admit that, at times, it's hard to reach allof Canada from Quebec. Paradox went on to benominated for both a Juno and a CASBY Awardin 1989 for Most Promising Group of the Year.

The band began recording Obvious Puzzlelast February at Montreal's Studio Victor.Cossette describes the recording as being "reallya family thing" as the three bandmembers co -produced the album with some old friends, namely John Alexander (at the time MCA 'sDirector, A &R), Danny Boivin and Noel Golden.Alexander has since moved on to MCA Musicin New York where he is now Vice -President,Talent Acquisition, East Coast America."However," Cossette says, "we're speaking withhim often; he's still involved in our project. He's trying to get us a record deal in the Statesand, although it's already hard for bands fromthe States to get record deals, we're confident. But we know it can be tough, though."

When asked why they titled their newestrelease Obvious Puzzle, Cossette laughs andexplains, "At one point the band became apuzzle. Denis, Jeff and I got to a point in our pre-

production where nothing was happeningbecause Jeff's more into new music and Denisis more into hard rock and I'm into funk. Wewere trying to find a similar kind of music andit wasn't working. Then we found something;we were writing together and one day we wrotea song and after that it was really fun to work

The trio is joined on stage by guitaristGilles Tessier and keyboardist Jeff Cote. Theyare currently performing around Quebec andthe Maritimes and gearing towards the releaseof their second single, Technicolor Face, a songthey feel so strong about that each bandmemberhad wanted it chosen as the first single.

: 11 1-1111by Tim Evans

Still going strong . . . Bryan Adams'(Everything I Do) I Do It For You holds the topspot for the sixth week and should hold on forat least one more week. That means it has a shotat a record -tying eight weeks at No. 1.

Oh so close! It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over byLenny Kravitz drops to No. 8, after peaking atNo. 2. He would have become one of very fewartists with a 'Z' in their name to reach No. 1. Ofall the chart topping artists over the last fiveyears, which letter has appeared the fewesttimes in their names? Hint: it's either Q, X, or Z.

I see a pattern. Crash Test Dummies'Superman's Song remains in the Top 10 in its16th week on the chart. The three previoussongs to achieve this (Scorpions' Wind OfChange, R.E.M.'s Losing My Religion, andExtreme's More Than Words) all left the Top 10the following week. In all cases, these are songsfrom artists who had neverpreviously had a Top10 hit (with the exception of R.E.M. which hadone). The last song to be that high later in itschart life came from another group which fitsthat pattern, Queensryche. Silent Lucidity wasat No. 9 in its 18th week.

No surprise . . ! Mariah Carey's Emotionsgarners the top add this week as it debuts at No.43. That's well ahead of Dire Straits' CallingElvis, which enters at No. 70. Emotions has thehighest debut of any of Carey's previous songsand the first time one of her songs is the top add.

A change for the better? Metallica's self -titled fifth album climbs to No. 4 on the Albumschart in just its third week. The band changedtheir sound slightly from their previous albumsand it appears this will be their biggest albumyet. Their last album, And Justice For All,peaked at No. 13 and sold over 200,000 copies.

Things continue to move slowly. TheAlbums chart continues to be fairly constantnear the top. In the last four weeks, only threenew albums have cracked the Top 20: CrowdedHouse's Wood face (which only spent one weekthere), Metallica's new entry, and this week TheKLF climbs into the No. 20 position.

The least used letter! Of all the letters inartists names who have hit No. 1 in the last fiveyears, the one that comes up the fewest times isZ. X is used in six artists names: Extreme,Roxette, INXS, Richard Marx, Samantha Fox,and Timex Social Club (for a combined total of11 No. 1 hits). Q is used once, Stacie Q hitNo. 1 in November of 1986 with Two Of Hearts. The last time an artist with a Z in their namereached the Top was July of 1986 whenNu Shooz did it with I Can't Wait.

DAN REED NETWORKThe HeatMercury 848 855-2-0

This, the third album from this talentedquintet from Portland, Oregon, is a reallyfun album, full of funk -laced rock. It wasrecorded in Vancouver at Little MountainStudio during the Gulf Crisis and Reed'sstrong feelings on the matter comethrough on tracks like Mix It Up, ChillOut and Thy Will Be Done. However, the majority of Reed's material is light-hearted and the grooves laid down areinfectious, spreading themselves fromrock to funk to danceable pop music. The Heat, Baby Now I and Life Is Sexare key funk/pop tracks that shouldfigure prominently at CHR and AOR.Production credits go out to BruceFairbairn and Reed with additionalsupport from Nile Rodgers on Money.(CD reviewed) - PF

ANNE MURRAY - Country/PopYes I DoCapitol - C2 -96319-F

ThisJerry Crutchfield production is AnneMurray's 30th album for Capitol.Although it might seem impossible forMurray to better her last release, sheliterally walks through these "ready forAnne" soon to become classics. Ofparticular and pleasing note is theemphasis on acoustic sound, particularly with Roots And Wings andWrong End Of The Rainbow. The Murrayvocal charm, as always, conjures upvisual excitement for her listeners asshe moves from track to track, a literalsong mosaic of life, its struggles andrewards. Murray even re -defines thefamiliar Even The Nights Are Better aswell as the familiar sounding Some DaysIt Rains All Night Long, both of whichare her admitted favourites. Murray alsoventures into the French -language fieldwith a particularly heart warmingperformance of Si Jamais Je Te Revois

(If I Ever See You Again), which shealso does in English. Written by Sharonand Bill Rice, the French adaption is byCanadian Gilles Godard now living andworking in Nashville where he heads upBookshop Records. The uptempo

Everyday track has been taken as thefirst single. Chalk up another winner forthis Canadian star. Radio has elevengreat choices, even with Si Jamais JeTe Revois which would be a pleasantsurprise for listeners. Should be front -racked and a priority for in-store play. This is an album designed for the agegroup with the most d isposable income.

WHITE TRASHWhite TrashElektra CD 61053-P

These newcomers from New York havecreated their own style of metal -funk -blues -jazz. White Trash, a seven -pieceband, combines driving metal guitar,Hendrix style skwank riffs, serious funkbass, thunderously danceable drums, powerful vocals and a three- piece hornsection. Produced by GeorgeDrakoulias (Black Crowes, The Cult)and mixed by Thompson and Barbiero(Tesla, Guns 'N Roses) the album isslightly derivative, but more complexthan Faith No More. The horn section, appropriately called The Badass Brassadds a James Brown -like feel to themusic. Robert Johnson blues andcontemporary jazz riffs pop up atnumerous places throughout the album, which add a totally new feel to metal/funk. Extremely innovative and creativesongwriting. Each track could stand onIts own as a single, but if you mustchose tracks, check out the first singleApple Pie, Judge -Me -Do, BackstagePass and Buzz!. (CD reviewed) -JL

Stuart Hamm is a bass playerextraordinaire who really kicks it up onthis his solo debut. Having played withthe likes of Joe Satriani proves he is atop calibre rock musician. Hamm letsloose on a few funky numbers, like TheHammer, showing his prowess on fourstrings and although the album isprimarily an instrumental album, Hammisn't too bad in the vocal departmenteither. If You're Scared, Stay Home is a

MICHAEL LEARNS TO ROCK - PopMichael Learns To RockImpact IPTD-10339-J

Perhaps they could have namedthemselves Michael Learns To Rock

So That He Can Someday Make It BigOn American Pop Radio And Make ABundle. These are some of the catchiestpop numbers I've heard in a long time. The group hails from Denmark and iscomprised of bassist Soren Madsen, drummer Kare Wanscher, guitaristMikkel Lentz and singer/keyboardistJascha Richter. Produced by JenaHofman and Oli Poulsen, this debutalbum is a mix of pop, pop and morepop, with a dash of gritty guitars and theodd techno beat thrown in for goodmeasure. Richter proves himself to bequite a strong singer throughout andthe band has a gift for penning a melody.CHR should fondly embrace the firstsingle, My Blue Angel, although mytastes lean more towards A Kiss InThe Rain, The Actor and Messages.(CD reviewed) - PF

JOAN JETT & THE BLACKHEARTSNotoriousEpic ZK 47488-H

Joan Jett's fourth release with Epic, proves once again that she can rockwith the best. The Blackhearts' RickyByrd and Thommy Price provide a solidbackbone for Jett's driving guitar andher unique style of controlled raunchvocals. The first single Backlash, is thenext in the line of anthem rock tunesJettis known for. Simple rhythms andextremely catchy guitar licks are evidentthroughout the whole album. Notoriouswas produced by Kenny Laguana. Jettcurrently holds the record for holdingthe # 1position in the RPM Hit Trackschart the longest, with the early eightieshit I Love Rock 'N Roll. Key tracks onNotorious are Goodbye, The Only GoodThing, Treadin' Water and Backlash.(CD reviewed) -JL

Reminiscentof BobDylan, but with vocals that have beendescribed as throaty and rough-hewn.There are two sides to this album, thefirst is electric, the second acoustic.Bob Johnston (Bob Dylan, Waterboys,Johny Cash and Willie Nelson) alongwith Sharp, produced Hard Travellin'which was recorded in New York andNashville. A&M president Joe Summers is optimistic about future

A&M's successful sales pattern continues"Our second quarter was excellent," reportsA&M Canada president Joe Summers, whocontinues with, "I'm very optimistic of theindustry overall.

Summers goes on to explain that "havingA&A reorganizing with Dan Whitt and withGerry Wipf at Discus, I find our current accountbase is very aggressive and promotionalminded."

As far as the recession is concerned,Summers believes that "theoretically, it's over, but it's still tough out there and I think the nextsix months is going to be a difficult period."

Summers points out that the recessionactually became evident the latter part of 1989.We could really feel it during Christmas of '89. . . that last quarter. The media didn't starttelling us about how bad things were untilJanuary of '90, when all the numbers wererevealed." He admits that the problems last year

"A&A had to bite the bulletthe same way we, the suppliers,

had to earlier in the year."

with A&A and Discus were devastating to theindustry. "A&A had to bite the bullet the sameway we, the suppliers, had to earlierin the year."The signs are good however, that A&A is"making an effort to get back into the retailsector, Summers enthuses. "That's the importantthing, because there have been a lot ofopportunities within that chain that haven'tbeen maximized, by virtue of what they've hadto go through."

A&M Canada President Joe Summers (I) andExecutive Vice President A&M/Island, Bill Ott,flank Aaron Neville who was In Toronto earlierthis year for a listening session.

Although the retail picture has been lessthan sparkling this year, A&M and its distributedlabels "have been hot," boasts Summers. SinceJanuary of this year, in-house certificationshave added a positive note to A&M's operationwith one gold single, a double platinum single,a gold album, two platinum albums and a doubleplatinum album. The distributed labels scoredone gold record for Island, old gold record forAttic, a gold record for The Children's Groupand one gold album, one platinum album andone double platinum album for Virgin. "Sowe're not in bad shape," says Summers.

The Bryan Adams single, (Everything I

Do) I Do It For You, is particularly noteworthyof A&M's success story this year. "A recordthat had all the right opportunities," saysSummers "A great song and a hit movie thatadded up to multi -faceted exposure. We're at200,000 on that cassette single. In the heyday ofthe 7" single, we never got numbers like that."

Radio is still an important vehicle forbreaking hits, as it did with the Adams single. However, Summers believes that the challengeis to find other vehicles that can supply exposure, like more television variety shows, and smallervenues for breaking and even established acts.

Another challenge that Summers seesfacing the industry is "keeping marketing costsin line, because we might not have mega -sellerslike we used to have in the past." He alsobelieves a heavier concentration on catalogueshould be a priority. Catalogue has proven overand over again to be the salvation of some labelsduring a dry spell with hit product. "Catalogueis very important," Summers stresses, "With theBob Marley Legends album on Island, whichA&M took over in January . . . we've shippedover 20,000 units. On the Nazareth GreatestHits, my projection for this year 40,000 units,

"... I think that being moreaggressive and promotion

minded with catalogueand the mid -price titlesis very important..."

which is outstanding. The same with ChrisdeBurgh's Spanish Train . . . some of the oldclassics, and the demographics aren't teenagers, which says something for catalogue. Therefore,I think that being more aggressive and promotionminded with catalogue and the mid -price titles

is very important."As far as the general sales picture is

concerned, Summers admits to being "somewhatsurprised," at the inroads the compact discmade, but not overly surprised at the decline inpopularity of the cassette. "In retrospect," saysSummers, "looking back at all the cycles of theconfiguration, CDs taking over was almostpredictable. The cassette slide was predictablebased on the historical data and the penetrationthe cassette players have had."

Summers is hopeful that the DCC (DigitalCompact Cassette) will reverse the downwardtrend of the cassette, and that the soon -to -belaunched new configuration "will be a carrierfor us," continues Summers. "I think the DCCwill be just as exciting as the CD when it waslaunched. The sound is superior. I'm veryoptimistic about its future. I like the packagingand I like the fact that the analog cassette can beplayed on the digital equipment so as to not

... the industry isn't going to gofrom Oto 60 in one month ..."

make an entire collection obsolete." He doesbelieve however that once the consumer getsused to the digital equipment, "the analog cassettewill just create its own dissatisfaction."

Summing up, Summers cautions that, although there are positive signs of a turnaroundin Canada's economy, the industry isn't "goingto go from 0 to 60 in one month. But we are

making good progress towards recovery. There'll be some pretty powerful stuff in thestores this fall. We have two great albumscoming, and, if they aren't Top 5 by year's end,I'll be surprised. I'm talking about the BryanAdams and U2 albums." He concludes with "It'sonly natural that with all these powerhouses inthe stores, it will be beneficial to everyone".

Cain and Carone shareGolden Eagle releaseGolden Eagle President Don Grashey has takenthe unique approach of releasing two of hisartists back to back on a7" vinyl single. Featuredon the single are Cindi Cain's You Called HerName Again, written and produced by Grashey, and George Carone's I'll Take Her LoveAnytime, a Fay Walker original also producedby Grashey.

The Carone side is the follow-up to his lastyear release of She Doesn't Matter Anymore, which gained a berth on the Cashbox Top 50 anda #11 slot on the Indie Bullet chart. The newCarone single was actually released a few yearsago, but Grashey wasn't too happy with thetrack, which he just recently re-recorded. "Wefeel it's a little stronger this time, especially forthe world market," he explains.

There had been some controversy overGrashey's last year production/distribution dealwith Sony/Epic for Cain. Two singles and heralbum, A Place Where Memories Live, werereleased in Canada under the deal. However, asGrashey explains, "They (Sony) were unable towork out a release arrangement with Epic/Nashville and that locked us into a Canadianonly release."

He goes on to point out that "Considerableground was lost in the US because of thisproblem. All the companies I spoke to wereinterested in listening to her product, but wantedthe world market before they would commit to

anything."Grashey approached Sony this past May

outlining his problem, and they apparentlyagreed "that holding us to the production agree-ment would hinder her career advancement. The agreement has been cancelled," concludesGrashey, "and, that's why Cindi is back onGolden Eagle for the present, until we can firma US deal."

where they will remain until Sept. 7, and moveeast to Hamilton for Canadian Country MusicWeek '91 (9-14), followed by Boone County(16-21), Esquimalt Inn (23-28), and CampbellRiver (Sept. 30 to Oct. 5).

Jane Hawley gained a few more thousand fanswhen she appeared at the 12th annual EdmontonFolk Music Festival (Aug 9). She was backed byher Cranky Brats band, and opened with whatEdmonton Journal writers Rod Campbell andRoger Levesque described as "the fiery fiddler'snational anthem, Maple S ugar." They also askedthe question, "Why this woman is not on herway to national recognition remains a mystery.,"Much of Hawley's material was taken from heralbum, Walking On Thin Ice. The Journal writerswere obviously impressed, writing, "Shecompetently worked her way through jewelslike Hotel Heart (with Mike McDonald of Jr.Gone Wild on harp), Mamma's Waiting andSaskatoon."

Lindsay Thomas Morgan and Tom Jones two boys from Wales, did it up with Welsh finesseat Lulu's (Aug. 19), one of the largest roadhousesin North America. Morgan opened for Jonesand the audience was reportedly very receptiveto Morgan who now lives in the Kitchener,Ontario area. A few panties were even thrownhis way. Morgan is charting with his latestSpyder track, Love Is, which moves into No. 76on the RPM Country 100, the second week ofcharting. The track is included on his self -titledalbum and on RDR Countrypak #4.

Tall, Dark & Lonesome, is included on herHarbour For My Soul album as well as the RDRCountrypak #4. Manderson and Morgan werein Nashville recently where they met with JerryVandiver, who wrote her debut single with GregTamblyn and David Knudtson. The single alsoreceived the nod from the honest, but oftencaustic Music Row ReviewerRobert K.Oermann."She can sing, no foolin'," he wrote, continuingwith, "Her folk -country delivery, some niceguitar work and a simple, to -the -point productionare this platters calling cards." Darren Waltersproduced the track. Manderson and Morgan arenow putting together a duet of In The Mind OfMy Woman, a Morgan original, which will beincluded on the next Roto Noto CD compilation.
