all siblings of one divine Father, and we must cherish and defend human life FROM WOMB TO TOMB: from the unborn, the poor, the homeless, the disadvantaged, to the prisoners, the refugees, the hungry, the sick elders, the oppressed women, the abused children. We must be Jesus’ people of light, love, forgiveness and compassion. We clerics love you all. By the way, please obtain the bishop’s permission before affixing flyers to the car windshields of our parishioners in the church parking lot: Thank you.

Today, we begin the Sunday Cycle B, the year of the Gospel of Mark. The “Messianic Secret” is the theme of Mark’s Christology, that is, his understanding of Jesus is stated immediately… the “Good News of Jesus, Messiah, Son of God.” (1:1) Mark’s purpose is not to prove this statement, but to unfold its implications for faith and discipleship. He uses the perplexing “Messianic Secret” to convey a proper understanding of Jesus’ life. Demons acclaim Him as Son of God, but he silences them. At other times, Jesus tells people who have experienced His power to remain silent. Two things are communicated: first, knowledge of Jesus’ identity comes from superhuman power, either that of the heavens or of the demons; second, proper confession of Jesus should not be made on the basis of the miracles, but only after following Him to the cross. The first human in Mark who correctly addresses Jesus as Son of God is the centurion who, at the moment of Jesus’ death, says, “Truly this man was the Son of God.” (15:39)

Today’s gospel is presenting John the Baptist as the author of the famous sentence, “Behold, the Lamb of God,” which we Catholics repeat at every Mass before Holy Communion. This sentence originated, like the Baptism Rite, with John the Baptist and cannot be truly understood unless we go back to the animal sacrifices so common at the time of Jesus. In our case, the sacrifice of a lamb, symbol of the Easter (Passover) meal, was slain for the sins of the family offering the sacrifice. John the Baptist prophesied about Jesus sacrificing His life for the salvation of all mankind. If you read last Sunday’s bulletin, you must have grasped the full significance of John’s and Jesus’ Baptism.

Then Jesus saw that two disciples of John, maybe in awe of the voices heard during Jesus’ baptism or by John’s proclamation, were following him: “What are you looking for?” Jesus asked and then “Come…” And one of the two, Andrew, went to find his brother Simon to whom Jesus promptly prophesied: “You’ll be called Cephas,” in Greek ‘Petros’, in Latin ‘Petrus’, in modern English ‘Peter’, but by its Latin root, it should be properly translated ‘Rocky’ from Cephas = Rock.

I guess that we should ourselves answer Jesus message today in his question: “What are you looking for?” This question from Jesus should give us pause in our daily running of our life, as God’s message in Psalm 45 (46): “Stop, know I’m God.” In these times of epidemic, pandemic, testing and vaccines, when we get fearful, confused, angry at the world, and doubtful about what to do and where to turn, Jesus is calling us to stop our panic, put all anxieties aside for a minute, and listen to God message, just when human distress hits us so strongly, and in the silence of our consciences, we can find God again,

From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto …

My Dear Friends, This Friday, January 22, we Catholics, celebrate the infamous anniversary of the 1973 SCOTUS “Roe vs. Wade” decision, which gave free permission to the mothers to murder their innocent babies until birth and even beyond, if a botched abortion ended in an alive birth. Our beloved Bishop Dewane will celebrate here in our St. Martha the 8:30 a.m. Holy Mass (with an optional overflow Mass in the Parish Hall), fervently asking God to stop the slaughter of the innocents. This Mass will be live streamed on the Diocese of Venice and St. Martha websites. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, seating will be limited at both locations, and reservations should be made at dioceseofvenice.org/2021prayerwalk. If you can, my friends, join in prayer and maybe offering a special personal sacrifice as we do on Ash Wednesday. A second Pro Life Holy Mass will be celebrated at noon, for the faithful who work downtown. This Wednesday January 20, we US citizens will see the swearing of our 46th President: Joseph Biden, the second baptized Catholic after our lamented great John Kennedy, murdered in 1963. Biden will be the new captain of our USA ship: we citizens and residents are all together in this ship, and we must pray that the captain takes the right course avoiding sand bars and submerged rocks. Let’s pray that the Mother of Jesus, the Star of the Sea, protect all of us, in these tragic days. Just a year ago, our country was enjoying great economic prosperity and a quiet international peace. All changed with the Chinese Coronavirus, creating a repeat of the Spanish flu of 1918-19 causing financial havoc in the entire globe, with millions of sick people; here in our country we had a million sick people with almost 400,000 fatalities. And how we can grasp the untold pain and suffering of the sick, of those who lost their job and their dear ones, the disruption of the nations’ governments and commercial trades. And here in our good ol’ USA, beside closed schools, stadiums, churches, factories, since last March, we have witnessed night after night to riots with looting, burning of businesses and homes, killings and civil disorder, rending the fabric of our society and culminating recently with the criminal frightening breaking into our Capitol and Congress. As an immigrant (Non-quota minister) I was sent by my superior to Harlem (1964-75) when mobs took to the streets in the1960’s and 1970’s, and it was deja vu again but with a frightening new twist: division in our Catholic Church, with Catholics expressing in church more their political views than Jesus’ message, which my fellow priests, deacons and I for the last 30 years as pastor have tried to communicate. I can confess that my heart is broken in seeing such hatred of one another: how can we go to receive Jesus in our hateful vengeance-full hearts? In preparing this bulletin I was asking Mary and the Holy Spirit to give me light, and after literally hours of prayer, Jesus message came to me to remind us all about his desire “THAT ALL OF THEM -my disciples- BE ONE AS YOU FATHER AND I ARE ONE.” Comforted by Jesus message, and instructed by our gentle Pope Francis, I’m being reassured that even in these days of fear and confusion in our beloved land, so exceptionally blessed in resources by our Creator, we parishioners of St. Martha are

remembering His words of support and consolation, as when the Apostles in their boat tossed by the wind, blinded by lightning, frightened by thunders, pelted by heavy rain: “DO NOT BE AFRAID, IT IS I.” Yes, our creator, our Savior Jesus, our crazy lover of all of us, is asking “Whom are you still looking for? I’m with you, inside your hearts, still carrying you in my arms … fear not my little children, cling to my heart you will never be alone”.

Friday, January 22, is the feast of St. Vincent Pallotti, the founder of the Society of Catholic Apostolate, colloquially referred to as “Pallottines,” of priests, brothers, sisters and lay associates.

St. Vincent was born in 1795 in Rome (Italy), where he died in 1850. Pope Pius XII declared Vincent “Blessed” in 1950, and Pope Saint John XXIII declared him “Saint” in 1963. St. Vincent was an innovator. His studies of Sacred Scripture, tradition and theology convinced him that the mission and responsibility of spreading the Faith was incumbent on all baptized people, lay people as well as clergy. He established the Society of the Catholic Apostolate to carry out his vision.

Today, throughout the world, we Pallottines number about 2400 priests and brothers, some 4000 sisters and approximately 175,000 associate lay persons. The mission of our Society is clear and simple: “The sanctification of all peoples and the spread of the Catholic faith, to be brought about primarily through the reunification of all Churches of the East and West.” Jesus’ prayer was: “that all may be one, Father, as you and I are one.”

As we celebrate the memory of this Roman priest, we are also, in a sense, celebrating our standing as disciples, indeed as apostles, heeding the command of Jesus to “go and preach.” Fr. Patrick, Fr. Chris, Fr. Jan, and I are happy to serve you, God’s good family of St. Martha, in reaching the goal of becoming “perfect as our Father in heaven is perfect.” We are happy to have in our service the help of our diocesan clergy and religious.

Our beloved Holy Father has instituted a special year - from December 8, 2020 to December 8, 2021 - dedicated to St. Joseph, Guardian of Jesus and Patron of the Universal Church, on the 150th Anniversary (1870-2020) from Pius IX proclamation of such patronage. St. Joseph has been a beloved, tender, loving father. He was obedient and accepting believer of “God’s will.” He was courageous, working dad, who prefer to remain in the shadow of Jesus and Mary, a subline example of true humility and trust in God. Let’s pray to Him:

To you, St. Joseph, we bring all the fears and anxieties that weighs us down. This pandemic has attached God’s people, bringing much illness, sorrow and death. We ask you, dearest St. Joseph, to be our guide along with very dark path, for you are the model of faith, courage and fidelity that we need so desperately. May the Lord send forth the purifying fire of the Holy Spirit, to end this outbreak of disease and renew the hearts of the faithful. Guide us to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, your beloved bride, and to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the hope of all humanity. O St. Joseph, pray ceaselessly for us during this time of suffering, fear and great mourning. May this current pain inflicted upon mankind be transformed by the power of Christ’s cross and lead to a new springtime of hope and devotion. Amen.

Sunday, January 31, begins Catholic Schools Week; it ends on Friday, February 5. There will be an Open House

on Thursday, February 4 from 8:15 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Please plan to visit the school on that day to tour and celebrate with our children, and to observe and join in our celebration of who we are as a “family.” St. Martha school is a recipient of a national “Blue Ribbon” award, and not only exhibits academic excellence, but also shines the light of the living faith. Everyone is invited.

This Sunday, is the annual collection for the Church in Latin America and the Caribbean. Your generosity to this collection is invaluable to the future of the faith in this region. Your donations will fund catechesis, marriage and family life programs and seminarian formation. Please support programs like these with a joyful and generous heart, and give extra generously in this week’s collection.

Smile, God loves you and so does Fr. Fausto with your St. Martha clergy:
