Will Fiedler was the only kid in his 8th grade class to accept

the invitation to write a remembrance of the Vietnam War.

This will be etched on a plaque and will be on its way to

Washington D.C. to be archived. Will Fiedler said,” he

thought this would be a way to honor them, and he feels proud

to have participated in this school project,.” The plaque will

probably be placed on the Vietnam Veterans memorial wall in

Washington, D.C. Will and his family will someday be able to

go to the wall and look a Will’s work if they wanted. That’s

pretty awesome. Mr. Savavedra provided Will some pretty

amazing items such as a Vietnam coin, and a bracelet. Great

work Will! Your efforts are very much appreciated.

In Mr. Chrisman’s 8th grade Science class, it is mandatory to contact one college. “ I

would prefer students contact three, but just contacting one is still amazing. Some high

school students haven’t done that yet,” says Mr. Chrisman. I asked Noah Hillman what he

thought about it and he replied saying,” I believe it will help us with further opportunities

through our high school experience. It will also make colleges look twice because we

graduate in 2018 not this year so it catches their eye.” Noah Hillman has contacted about

ten, but has narrowed it down to three which are Texas A&M, Duke, and North Carolina.

The assignment was called “70 days and counting. What’s your plan?” Most students have

only contacted the minimum, including me, so that makes Noah’s feat a big one. Eiley

said,” I believe that since we are working hard now it might pay off later.” You may think

that contacting a college is hard. However, it is actually particularly easy to do. All you

have to do is get parents permission, find the website of the college you want to contact,

find someone to e-mail, and send them an e-mail, and BAM! You just contacted a college.

Contacting some colleges is easy, but some are very tricky to contact, so you will have to

work. Overall the assignment was worthwhile.

This month I interviewed Mr. Chrisman. I asked what his favorite food was, he said

it was sea food. I then asked him what his favorite drink was, he said whole milk. I

also asked him what his favorite movie was, he said The Great Outdoors. Then I

asked him his favorite song. He said “All Night long” by Joe Walsh. Finally I asked

him his favorite band/singer and he said he could-

n't decide between The Hollies and Joe Walsh.

I would like to participate in student leadership because I want to improve my leadership

skills, I enjoy helping others, and to help make my school a more positive environment.

While working with the other leadership students and Mr. Lobdell, I hope to improve my

leadership skills. I will gain more experience to plan and carry out projects within our community.

When working on projects, I will have the opportunity to improve skills such as organizing, planning,

and effective performance. These skills will help me to be a better person at school, and also to work

with others in my community.

I enjoy helping others in my community. I help others by mowing lawns, raking leaves, and

shoveling snow for shut-ins or people with disabilities. I worked several times at the concession stand

this year for volleyball. When we got done working, I volunteered to help the Jr. High custodian put

away everything. I have participated in the Buddy Walk in Des Moines, Iowa the past two years to

help raise money for the GiGi Playhouse. GiGi Playhouse provides programs for children with Down

Syndrome. I help babysit for a preschooler who has Down Syndrome, and I learn how to communi-

cate with him through sign language. Even though I physically could not participate in the Polar

Plunge, I went to give my friends support by giving them encouragement and having their blankets

ready for them when they came out of the water into the cold air. When I participate in community

fundraisers, it shows others how much I care.

I have been involved in Boy Scouts for seven years. I am currently Life Rank, and am work-

ing on my Eagle Rank paperwork to start my Eagle project. As a scout passes through the ranks he is

required to do at least three hours of community service. With the Boy Scouts, I have participated in

community projects such as local food drives, rake and run, helping the American Legion with their

annual fundraisers, Christmas caroling, and the litter pick-up on Shippee Rd. I am enrolled with a spe-

cial crew within my troop to go on a Philmont Trip. This trip is a 12 day trek of at least ten miles of

hiking each day in Northeast New Mexico. The Philmont Crew has been participating in several

fundraisers such as the lemonade stand and grilling at AJ meats. The motive for me to get involved in

my community is the satisfaction of helping others that cannot do it independently themselves.

I want to help make my school have a more positive environment by helping students when

they are having a bad day through encouragement and helping them through it. I would like to plan

activities where students can come and have fun and enjoy themselves. I want to make sure that eve-

ryone is treated equally whether they have a disability or not. Our school should be a safe positive,

full filled environment for every student.

I would be honored to be selected at a Student Leader for this school year. I was a part of the Student

Leadership Committee as a sixth grader and I learned a lot about being a leader, serving my school

and community, and being a positive role model to the other students in our building and district. I

also made some great friends with the other Student Leaders. I want to continue to help to make Lena

-Winslow Junior High the best that it can be for the students and teachers who spend so much of their

time here. I want students to feel happy to come to school every day and to believe that Lena-

Winslow Junior High is a great place to go to school.

If I am chosen as a Student Leader for this school year, I would look forward to continuing to

sell concessions at sporting events as well as candy grams before school. I enjoy volunteering my time

to help out. I have an outgoing personality and get along well with my classmates as well as with the

students in 6th and 8th grade. I would also be happy to help organize and work events such as the holi-

day placemat delivery to the nursing home, serving at the Soup Kitchen, and any other events that the

Student Leadership Committee became involved in. Last year, I volunteered my time to help some

students in the elementary during their recess and class time and I would be interested and willing to

do that again. It makes me feel good to know that I have helped to make someone else’s day better.

I think that I can help to make Lena-Winslow Junior High a positive environment by being a

good, positive role model for my classmates. I work hard to get good grades and earned the Presiden-

tial Award last year. I always do my best to make good choices and I believe in being a friend to eve-

ryone. I want to be a positive leader in my class and in my school.

I have some ideas for the 2013-2014 school year. I think the Student Leadership Committee

should plan a Junior High Bowling Night. We could have teams from each class. It would be open to

all students who are interested. Maybe we could run it as a fundraiser to earn money for a family or

person in need. I also think the Student Leaders could each have an elementary buddy. This buddy

might be a student who needs a little extra help or attention. We could work with them during our

Student Leadership time or during Guided Studies. We could also do a clothing drive where we col-

lect clothes and shoes to give to the Salvation Army or Goodwill Store before Christmas time.

My past community service experience would be that I was an active member of Student

Leadership as a sixth grader. I also volunteered as a ball boy for the football team for five years. I

help my elderly neighbor with her yard work by doing the trimming in her yard and help look after my

other neighbor’s dog when they are out of town.

Thank you for reading my essay and for considering me as a Lena-Winslow Junior High Stu-

dent Leader for the 2013-2014 school year.

I would like to join student leadership because I could help make the junior high school a

better place. I think I would be good at being a student leader. I usually get done with my home-

work early, I stay on top of my grades, and in fifth grade I went to Mrs. Kleckler’s room and

helped out. I also was Principal of the Day twice and was postmaster in Wee Deliver. Other jobs I

had for Wee Deliver were sorter and nixie clerk.

Outside of school I volunteer at my church as an altar server for regular Sunday masses and for

funeral masses. I have also played with the Freeport Soccer Club for the last 4 years, which has

fall, spring and indoor winter seasons. For the past 2 years I’ve helped out at the train show food

stand.

I would like everyone at the school to get along with each other. You don’t have to be friends

with everyone but just be nice to other kids. I would like the school to be a drug-free, bully-free

school. The school should take steps to make sure students get their grades up. This will help

them do better in school and get a better job. Getting a better job will help the economy. I would

be willing to help kids in my spare time.

The school should work to make sure there are less waste and more recycling. Doing so will give

landfills more space so they will fill up slower. This leads to less landfills being dug, which will

greatly help the environment. These are the reasons that I want to be a student leader.
