est viaduct Is the one which carriesthe line to Long Key a solid concretestructure of ISO arches and nearljtwo miles long This viaduct like theeighty miles of embankment is pro-
tected from the action of the oceanby a series of interposing keys thtconstruction of which called for c
heavy additional outlay of time andmoney This work of protectingstructure embodied many of the mostdifficult engineering problems en-
countered The most difficult andcostly section lies In the thirteenmile stretch between Knightsand Big Pine Key wherein areviaducts with an aggregate lengthof four miles
Shortly after the opening of the extension to Knights Key onC 190S the steamship company con-
ducting a steamer servicebetween Miami and Havana discon-tinued it and Inaugurated in its stead
daily service between Knightsand Key West and Havana
After terminal facilities at KeWest have been bettered and enlargedand the Panama canal opened ttraffic the quantity of freight hauledover the Florida East Coastline wlllbe determined practically bjthe physical capacity of the roadUntil such time It Is believed thatthe present steadily accruingtraffic and the winter tourist trafficwill be a considerable source of reve
