Academy XihistoryTechnology is rapidly evolving and as a result, employers are experiencing shortages of talent and skills. From I.T to finance and design to marketing, the demand for design and technology skills is evident in industries around the world. Traditional education models are unable to support the rate of technological change and the disciplines they teach fail to meet industry demand.

Our curriculum is continually changing—we teach current and in-demand skills to transform individuals and progress their careers. We’re evolving with the industry, which gives us the flexibility to remain relevant and integrate new learnings about emerging markets.

The name Academy Xi* emerged from 100 percent commitment and personal responsibility to improve the world around us. We’re first and foremost an education company, driven by a purpose to bring our students to life. We teach our students the skills and techniques that will empower them to create their own waves of change.

The “Xi” logomark has a deliberate, mathematical structure. “X” is a variable in mathematics. In our context, this is a problem that needs to be solved. When we attach the “i” component to the “X,” this is the power of “i”—my personal responsibility and my commitment to solving this problem. Therefore, together, “Xi” is me taking responsibility to not only identify problems in the world but become part of the solution.

*Pronounced “ex-eye”

We’ll help you understand how User Experience Design fits into research, design, and product creation. You’ll stretch your design thinking muscles and explore the depth of your creativity. You’ll be applying design thinking, innovative approaches, and a newfound approach to customer engagement. You’ll also work on your personal project, identifying the problem statement and project scope.

Introduction to User Experience Design

Applied research

Using the fine art of research, we’ll guide you through some common, industry-specific techniques such as one-on-one interviews, surveys, and desk research. These techniques will help you understand who you’re designing for and why you’re designing for them. With hypotheses, insights, and facts you’ll confidently answer the question: “what problem am I solving?”

Analysis and persona creation

Use rapid exercises to piece together customer insights. These insights will form the centrepiece of who you’re designing for: your personas. But don’t stop here! Take your personas further and generate feature ideas and transform these features (no matter how outlandish) into a rudimentary project plan.

Throughout the 10 weeks, you’ll work on your very own passion project: work-related or personal. Come to class with a problem you want to solve and work towards a solution using the User Experience Design toolkit.

Best practices, design and wireframing

Think of this as your toolkit to bring together all the practical elements of UX and Information Architecture. From content planning to site-mapping and wireframing, we’re going to give you a complete set of tools and templates that will have you creating artefacts your clients will notice.

Usability testing

Using testing techniques, you’ll learn how to plan for a testing session, create scenarios and tasks, note-take, and observe. You’ll then translate your learnings into a refined UX Design and prototype.

Communicating design

Implement what you’ve learned. Never settle for what’s been done before. Every design problem is solved better with the help of the people who’ll be using your product. We’ll walk you through best communication practices and techniques to effectively demonstrate your ideas and designs.

Looking forwards (and back)

Your journey has nearly come to an end, so let’s recap what you’ve learned thus far. After looking back, let’s fast forward into the future to see what stage the UX industry is at. We’ll squash your fears and unleash your dreams.

Project presentations

It’s your chance to present your personal project in front of the class and the instructor. The future is yours.

Persuasive design and prototyping

We’ll delve into pop psychology and science to learn how to create persuasive experiences. From learning how to build trust and credibility to convincing your customers to transact with you, our design principles will help you transform your vision into a compelling business.

Know yourself and know your audience. To create successful products, knowing what you want, what your audience wants, and what you think they want is fundamental! This is the only way to solve problems in a meaningful way. We’ll guide you through a visioning and success process, to understand user pain and pleasure points, whilst navigating through a specific task or service.

“I had a great time at Academy Xi, tutors are very friendly and supportive, classmates were fun to hang out with. It was more than just a learningexperience to me. During the course, I was able to apply some of the design thinking to daily jobs, it changed the way I think about design. Prior to the course, I was focusing more on the design details, how it looks etc. Now I think more about the function and structure.”

— Lin Mei, Product Designer at ReachOut Australia

“I would definitely recommend Academy Xi. It’s the best way to immerseyourself in the world of User Experience Design, regardless of what your current role is. You’ll get to learn with a group of cool folks from all walks of life and learn from some of the smartest and most inspiring people you’ll ever meet. The small number of the class makes for an intimate and rewarding experience. Academy Xi’s curriculum highly focuses on UX and does not try to be anything more than that–which I found refreshing.” — Andreas Fabian, Interactive Art Director at INNOCEAN USA

“What made me decide instantly was the small class approach. I feel connected to Academy Xi’s vision—and most importantly, I strongly feel this is the right time and right place to learn. As an institution that is teaching User Experience, Academy Xi has proven themselves as a school that always thinks from their students’ perspectives and understands their needs.”

— Benjamin Chen, Senior UI Design at Tigerspike
