Recently Passed Shipmates

AFTERGLOW

I'd like the memory of me to be a happy one. I'd like to leave an afterglow of smiles when life is done. I'd like to leave an echo whispering softly

down the ways, of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days.

I'd like the tears of those who grieve, to dry before the sun of happy memories that I leave

when life is done. List of Passed Shipmates

ABOUT THE PAINTING - Dick says, “Ever since my childhood during World War II, I concluded that Fletcher class destroyers were the most handsome of all destroyers. I continue to believe so. Eventually I served for long or short periods on five Fletchers, including the Shields.” This painting is a large watercolor depicting the ship in rather calm seas as evening approaches, a mood often experienced on the ship’s deployment to the western Pacific.

The appearance of the ship represents her equipment as of the early sixties. ABOUT THE PRINT - The print is a “giclee” print, pronounced “gee-clay.” This process is the newest and most sophisticated method of reproducing paintings. The painting is scanned, computerized, and then printed on specialized large inkjet printers on 100% rag content papers with permanent pigmented inks. Unlike most ordinary lithographed prints, the materials used are designed to last for many decades without fading---if cared for properly.

Not only are they permanent, but the quality is exceptional. The prints are virtually indistinguishable from the original painting. Even the artist is fooled! On the downside, the process and the materials are more costly than older and less permanent methods of printing. But the quality and permanence are well-worth the cost. Each print will include a paper detailing the proper care of a giclee print. Each print will be signed by the artist. Since it is produced in two sizes, it will not be a “numbered” edition. ABOUT THE SIZE AND COST – The prints will be available in two sizes. The larger print is very slightly smaller than the original, but still a large painting when matted and framed. The smaller size is obviously less expensive and suitable for small spaces. Both sizes are printed on a standard sized sheet of paper in the event one wishes to put them into a standard sized frame. However, proper matting and custom framing is highly recommended. See Page 9 for pricing and order form.

SEA STORIES

The Rest of the Story Concerning the Shimonoseki Strait Passage By Duane R. Arment, LTJG, 53-54 I'd like to relate "the rest of the story" after our relief of the "East Coast Cans" that collided in TF 77. We were headed back toward Yokosuka for a Christmas break. We had to transit Shimonsaki Straits again to get to the East Coast of Honshu Island. We were engulfed with sampans going North and South between Honshu and Kyushu Islands. We were going from West to East. Some of the Japanese sailors seemed to be very irate at our passage shaking their fists, etc.. We later learned that they had a traffic light positioned to stop traffic in one direction. In truth we were running a red light and the Japanese were trying to tell us. We were going at a moderate speed so no damage was done. We really enjoyed our Christmas Holiday in Yokosuka that year, 1952. Branson RV Campground

Bill and Judy Ragan suggested this site for RVers joining us in Branson. They stayed here at the last reunion and give it their recommendation. It is located about a mile away from the hotel.

Father & Son Service on DD596

By Donald B. Finley, QM3 70-71

Capt Miles R. Finley, Jr, USN (Ret.) Passed away on January 7, 2010. He had Alzheimer's disease. His wife, Barbara F. (McCann) Finley, preceded him in death. She passed Thanksgiving morning , November 23, 2006 of complication due to diabetes. My father Graduated from the Naval Academy Class of 1943. He served as commanding officer on several ships, and staff officer on several staff duty locations. I remember Dad taking me as a small boy to sea on day exercise cruises. There were dependant cruises also. Dad took command of the USS Shields (DD-596) on July 15,1950 through April 2, 1952. He commissioned her as a regular duty ship from a reserve duty ship. Her home port as a reserve ship was on the Sacramento River in Sacramento, CA. Dad brought her down the river to the San Francisco Bay and out under the Golden Gate Bridge and off to the Pacific for duty. Some 20 years later, I was just about to finish my 6 year enlisted reserve duty obligation. I was doing weekend a month drilling duty in San Diego, CA. The Navy assigned me to the USS Shields (DD-596) in 1970. I served on her as a QM3 until 1971. She was to be decommissioned. I then was reassigned for my last few months. I was discharged in 1972. The USS Shields (DD-596) was decommissioned in 1972. It was fun to talk to Dad about our times aboard the USS Shields (DD-596). I will remember many of the "Sea Stories" Dad would tell. SHIP'S STORE

USS Shields DD-596 2078 USS Myles C. Fox DD-829 989 USS Puget Sound AD-38 500 Naval Definitions – Pea Coat Sailors who have to endure pea-soup weather often don their pea coats but the coat's name isn't derived from the weather. The heavy topcoat worn in cold, miserable weather by seafaring men was once tailored from pilot cloth -- a heavy, coarse, stout kind of twilled blue cloth with the nap on one side. The cloth was sometimes called P-cloth for the initial letter of the word and the garment made from it was called a p-jacket -- later a pea coat. The term has been used since 1723 to denote coats made from that cloth.

Kite Flying Contest on ‘60 – ‘61 Wespac Deployment

By J. P. Cain

These photos show the OI Division ET’s launching and flying their kite during the contest. The following is my recollection of the contest. I welcome input from other shipmates should they recall this activity. As I remember Capt. Wessel announced a kite flying contest between divisions. The prize was a bottle of booze to be enjoyed by the winning division at our next liberty port. Other divisions were creating kites out of whatever was available. The ET’s were figuring out how to disguise their kite to make it look homemade. You see there was this dandy box kite stored in the emergency radio gear. This kite was to be used to fly a long wire antenna in case of loss to the ship’s antennas. Needless to say OI Division won.

ORDERING THE PRINT - Please fill out the below order form and send it with payment to the address on the form. Dick wishes it to be made clear that this print will not be available through any store or other outlet----but only available to Shield’s shipmates and families---in that sense it is a “limited edition.” The cost of the print represents the actual costs of production to which Dick has added a very modest amount to cover the business of securing and mailing the prints. To be clear, this is not a money-making proposition for Dick---he rather wants his shipmates to have an accurate representation of the ship which has meant so much to all of us.
