University Scholars Program | WELCOME EVENT 2014

The University Scholars Program (USP) o!ers a select group of exceptional students the opportunity to forge their own academic path and the support to reach their full potential. Our mission is to provide a challenging, engaging, global education that is fully supported and flexible, tailored to each student’s talents and goals. The program creates and empowers visionaries, innovators, and leaders. And that is the best path to improving our world.

The University Scholars Program provides an abundance of resources and guides students to chart their own unique Northeastern experience.

We provide:

> Tailored international experiences: four- to six-week immersions, a semester study abroad, a six-month co-op, or even a full year in a foreign country.

FACULTY FELLOWS

The University Scholars Program provides individualized advising to all of our scholars with support from the University Scholars Program Director and sta! as well as from our Faculty Fellows. The leaders of the University Scholars Program have extensive expertise in teaching, advising, and mentoring students, and our four Faculty Fellows are acclaimed researchers and scholars in their respective fields. Our team is enthusiastic about working with and for our students, and delights in creative collaborations with our scholars. Professor of Biology Erin Cram has described it as “a privilege to work with students of the caliber represented in the University Scholars Program,” a sentiment echoed by the other Faculty Fellows. Our Faculty Fellows are mentors as well as intellectual partners who foster a community in which professors and scholars work with and learn from each other.

“ I came into Northeastern through The Program for Undeclared Students. I had five prospective majors, all of which I found fascinating, all of which were quantitative. My professor helped me figure out my goals. Now I know that I want to work in financial markets. I also want to be engaged in some sort of entrepreneurship that will help my country. All of our scholars have direct access to the expertise of our faculty and to our state-of-the-art research facilities. We provide ample opportunities for each scholar to learn about and participate in cutting-edge research and creative projects that advance and create knowledge. Many scholars begin participating in research their first year; this experience informs the rest of their academic and professional careers.

Second-year student Daniel Moran (CCIS BS ’17, MS ’18), a computer science major from Minerva, Ohio, spent three-quarters of his first year working in an interdisciplinary lab at the intersection of political science and computer science. Dan used scripting language and the Twitter and Daylife application programming interfaces (APIs) to gather data on “mention counts” of political candidates across social and mainstream media during election seasons. He then created visualizations of this big data. His second year brought him to a new computer science research lab, where he developed verification tools for concurrent programs. Now on co-op at Metaswitch Networks in San Francisco, he is working to implement Software-Defined Networking (SDN) in various use cases. “As a member of USP,” Dan explains, “I am poised to take full advantage of the exciting opportunities Northeastern has to o!er, opportunities that are already aiding in my personal and professional growth.”

“ I know a lot of other schools have honors programs that just give you money; this is more than that. This program is grounded in mentorship and intellectual scholarship. USP provides opportunities and communities that enrich our education. As a scholar, you are always on the side of inquiry—we always question, we think past just knowing. We’re not just getting a degree—we’re growing as people and as academic scholars. ”


Our global perspective is cultivated by bringing students from around the globe to study in Boston and by sending students abroad for immersive international experiences. Many of our classes take a global approach, and our diverse population—including 17 percent international students—means new insights and discoveries are made naturally every day.

International experiences are available to all Northeastern students, however there are some opportunities that are exclusive to the University Scholars Program. Corinne Bowers (COE, ’18), a first-year civil engineering major from Richmond, Virginia, is already taking advantage of several of these programs. “The thing I love about USP is that you can do whatever you want and Northeastern will help you get there. For example, it has always been a dream of mine to go to Africa. This summer I’m going on an Engineering Problem-Solving Dialogue of Civilizations trip to Cameroon, Africa to help villages there overcome a variety of engineering-related problems. And this spring I will be participating in an all-scholars Alternative Spring Break; we will be going to Costa Rica to learn about the co!ee industry. And this is all in my first year!”

The University Scholars Program is committed to the common good and to giving back to our communities. This strong commitment is embodied by our top-ranked service-learning program and anchored by our Civic Engagement Program (CEP). Each year, our scholars dedicate 100 hours to a civic engagement activity through this program, designed to help scholars understand how to best put their talents to use.

In one of these scholars-only Service Research Projects, first-year international business major Katelin Murdock (DMSB ’18) is volunteering with Boston Building Resources, working on ways to develop quantitative measures of social programs for the local non-profit. The Nashville, Tennessee native says the opportunity has allowed her to “see how research and service interact,” and is just another way she has found a sense of community through the University Scholars Program.

Her fellow first-year scholar, Lindsey Bressler (CSSH ’18), originally from Tucson, Arizona, is studying international a!airs and economics. But she says the experience she has grown from the most has been a bit more local—her volunteer work at LIFT Boston. “Helping people with everything from finding basic housing to applying for jobs has been amazing—my experience there transcends clichés. Being a part of LIFT and really understanding the challenges many people face has made me think about what kind of a person I want to be. It’s made me think about who I want to help as an individual who can hopefully make an impact someday. It’s probably the most meaningful thing I’ve done so far.”
