Task DescriptionIn this task pupils should use either Black Cat Logo (at the blue level) or Scratch. There are two sections to the pupil notes – one section for completing the task using Black Cat Logo; and one section for completing the task using Scratch.

Level 3Pupils working at Level 3 should complete Part 1 of the task. Pupils are asked to direct a rubbish collection truck along a road to the Recycling Centre. They should write one sequence of commands to take the truck to the centre.

Level 4Pupils working at Level 4 should complete Part 1 and Part 2 of the task. In Part 2 pupils will be asked to design a badge for the Recycling Centre using procedures in Logo or ‘broadcast’ and ‘when I receive’ in Scratch.

Level 5Pupils working at Level 5 should complete Part 2 and Part 3 of the task. Pupils should devise and build a succession of embedded procedures to design a badge for the Centre if using Logo or embed ‘broadcast’ and ‘when I receive if using ‘Scratch’. They should make use of the tools available within the program.

When making a judgement of the pupil’s level of Using ICT competence within this task, teachers should use the Assessment Criteria Grid.

Prior Knowledge/ExperienceDepending on the level at which they are working, pupils should have some experience in some of the following:• knowledge of regular 2D shapes and their angle properties;• tessellation patterns;• using Black Cat Logo (or other Logo program) or Scratch;• altering pen width and colour;• using repeat commands to draw patterns/shapes;• designing and naming simple procedures if using Logo or using ‘broadcast’ and ‘when I receive’ if using

Scratch to draw patterns/shapes; and• saving and printing work.

ResourcesSuitable software: Black Cat Logo or other Logo program or Scratch.If using Logo, download the jpeg background. A helpsheet is also available. The teacher will have to save the background into a shared folder where the pupils can access it. If using Scratch, download the image to a public folder where the pupils can access it.

Managing the TaskPupils should be given opportunities to:

PlanPart 1• Pupils will need to move the lorry to the starting position.

Details are in the Pupil Notes.• Insert the background image into the logo or Scratch file from

where the teacher saved it to a shared folder. • Using the Pupil Notes as a stimulus, pupils should plan and write

commands to take the truck to the Recycling Centre. It is very important that the children type in all the commands before hitting the Enter/Return key. In this way the truck will be shown doing the complete journey.

Part 2 • Working on paper the pupils can work out the procedure needed to create a ‘hex’, if working in Logo or

use ‘broadcast’ and ‘when I receive’ if working in Scratch.

DoPupils should work individually to test out the commands. They should make use of pen width and colour. Depending on the level at which they are working, they should save, store and retrieve their work appropriately.

Evidence for External Moderation:

As well as submitting the final product, please include;

• evidence of planning

• a pupil evaluation at the appropriate level.

Pupils should be given the opportunity to discuss the outcome with their peers. They should reflect on the process and make any improvements if required.

Assessment Criteria Grid

Using ICT Requirements Level 3 Level 4 Level 5Explore• investigate, make predictions

and solve problems through interaction with digital tools.

Pupils can:• carry out and edit a

series of instructions, make predictions and solve problems using a digital device or environmental;

Pupils can:• investigate and solve

problems in a digital environment;

Pupils can:• investigate and solve

problems in a range of digital environments;

Evaluate• talk about, review and make

improvements to work, reflecting on the process and outcome and consider the sources and resources used, including safety, reliability and acceptability.

• make modifications to improve their work; and

• use appropriate ICT tools and features to improve work; and

• use appropriate ICT tools and features to carry out ongoing improvements and evaluate process and outcome; and

Exhibit• manage and present their stored

work and showcase their learning across the curriculum, using ICT safely and responsibly.

• save using file names and select work to showcase learning digitally.

• select, organise, store and retrieve their work to showcase learning digitally in a personalised area).

• organise, store and maintain their work within a personalised area to showcase learning digitally across the curriculum.

The first column of the Assessment Criteria Grid sets out the Requirements for Using ICT that are covered in this task. Alongside this are the Levels of Progression and the Using ICT Desirable Features for Interactive Design at Levels 3, 4 and 5. These Desirable Features have been produced as guidance

for teachers to consider when observing a pupil and assigning a level to a piece of work. When coming to a holistic judgement of the pupil’s level of Using ICT competence, teachers should ensure that these Desirable Features are used in conjunction with the Using ICT Levels of Progression.

Assessing Pupils’ Responses to the Task

Pupils should demonstrate, when and where appropriate, knowledge and understanding of e-safety including acceptable online behaviour.

Desirable Features

Interactive Design – Level 3 Interactive Design – Level 4 Interactive Design – Level 5

Pupils can:• solve problems using a digital device

or environment, for example plan and create a simple Scratch project or use the ‘repeat’ command to create patterns or shapes using Logo or Scratch;

• input sequences of commands; and• make modifications to improve their

work.

Pupils can:• investigate and solve problems in a

digital environment, for example create their own Scratch project showing an awareness of audience;

• input more complex sequences of commands, for example in Scratch use the ‘broadcast’ and ‘when I receive’ commands within a script or create and use procedures in Logo; and

• use appropriate ICT tools and features to improve work.

Pupils can:• plan and solve a more complex

problem or design and create an interactive ‘product’ demonstrating a clear sense of purpose and audience, for example use embedded procedures in a Logo project; and

• carry out ongoing improvements and evaluate their process and outcome.

Part 1 continuedYou have been asked to take the recycling truck to the recycling centre. Spend some time working out and testing the commands to do this.

When you have got it right you should enter all the commands and press Enter.

This will run your entire sequence so that you can see if it works.

If your truck moves to the centre without coming off the road then your sequence is correct and you can either print out your work or save a screen dump of your work. Ask your teacher which you should do.

If it does not work then click the Undo button and try again.

Change to Red Level, go to Options – Speed and select Slow. Give your work a name and save it into your documents folder.

Open your file and show it to someone in your class and discuss if or how you could have made it better.
