Uses and gratifications
Chloe Read
audience research- For our magazine, ‘leeds
life’ we researched the uses and gratifications that our product could bring to the audience.
- uses & gratifications are how the audience uses media products. the theory holds that the audience actively choose media products to suit their specific needs and fulfil specific gratifications.
our magazine- our magazine is specifically aimed at students
aged 18-24.
- ‘leeds life magazine’ and its spin off festival edition include stories about festival, fashion, music and student tips and therefore several uses and gratifications can apply to our magazine.
- we believe our magazine could provide self esteem and self actualization to the audience.
- for example, our magazine could provide a topic for conversation between two readers about festivals, therefore creating a similar interest leading to friendships, hence providing self esteem and confidence.
- ‘leeds life’ magazine also includes a double page spread on tips to survive at university and so new students could use these tips which could provide confidence to a student.
- our magazine could also meet the need of ‘self actualization’ as a viewer could gain spontaneity when reading the festival magazine as it may make them want to buy tickets to a leeds festival or take an interest in a different genre of music.
