In Senso Diva wehave utilized the latest advancements in digital tech-nology and created a hearing aid with innovative andsophisticated solutions that make the most of yourhearing ability and help ensure optimum communi-cation. Made to fit in the ear canal, Senso Divain-the-ear is very discreet.Senso Diva gives you the clearest and most comfor-table sound reproduction possible and automaticallyadjusts loudness according to your listening environ-ment. Through an analysis of the incoming sounds,Senso Diva is able to reduce noise and enhancespeech. Furthermore, Senso Diva effectively cancelsfeedback whistling – an otherwise common com-plaint of many hearing aid users. In addition to thetraditional listening programs, Senso Diva may beequipped with a music program specially optimizedfor listening to music.To get full satisfaction from the quality and the per-formance we have built into your Senso Diva hearingaid, please read and follow the instructions carefully.We hope you will be pleased with your new SensoDiva hearing aid. Getting to know the hearing aid

1. Microphone openings, where the sound entersthe hearing aid.

Operating the hearing aid

Recommended battery typeThe recommended battery type for Senso Diva is:

Zinc Air battery type 312

The Zinc Air battery is very durable.Please note the use-by date on the battery packagingstating how long the batteries will be good. Do notuse batteries with an expired use-by date. Becausethey are Zinc Air type batteries, they need air towork. Therefore, do not remove the sealing label un-til just before inserting the battery in the hearing aid.Once the sealing label has been removed, the batterywill start functioning after a few seconds.

Placing the battery in the battery compartmentBefore inserting a new battery inyour hearing aid, remember to re-move the battery sealing label. Donot use batteries on which there issticky residue as the residue canblock the battery airholes.

Remember to turnoff the hearing aidbefore opening thebattery compart-ment cover.Push the nail grip

upwards to gently swing the battery compartmentcover open. The plus (+) sign of the battery mustface upwards. This means that the side of the batterywith the small plus (+) sign should face in the samedirection as the plus (+) sign on the battery compart-ment cover. If the battery compartment cover doesnot close easily, the battery is incorrectly inserted.

When to change the batteryIf you hear four rapid beep-tones while wearing yourhearing aid, it is an indication that you shouldchange the battery as soon as possible, as the batteryis nearly exhausted. Once the battery is totally ex-hausted, the hearing aid will be completely silent.

Never leave an exhausted battery in the hearing aid.Exhausted batteries may leak, which could damagethe hearing aid. When changing batteries, hold thehearing aid over a table or a carpet to make it easierto find a dropped hearing aid or battery.

Turning the hearing aid on and offThe battery compartment cover of your Senso Divaalso functions as an on/off switch.

The hearing aid isturned on when abattery is insertedcorrectly and thebattery compart-ment cover is com-pletely closed.

The hearing aid isturned off whenthe battery com-partment cover isopen.

Please remember to switch the hearing aid off whenit is not in use. Remove the battery if the hearing aidwill not be used again soon.

Automatic adjustment of loudness

Senso Diva adjusts loudness automatically in accord-ance with your sound environment. Several thou-sand times per second, Senso Diva analyzes the sur-roundings and tailors its sound accordingly. WithSenso Diva you do not have to think about adjustingthe volume – it happens automatically.

Important: If the volume in your hearing aid is tooloud or too weak, or if the reproduced sounds aredistorted, or you would like any further information,consult the hearing healthcare professional whereyou received your hearing aid.

Fine tuning loudness

Your Senso Diva hearing aid may also be equippedwith a volume control so that you can fine tune theautomatic loudness setting.

When you raise the volume, you will hear abeep-tone for each step the volume is raised. Whenyou lower the volume, you will hear a deeperbeep-tone for each step the volume is lowered.

When the maximum or minimum adjustment levelis reached, a steady tone will sound until you releasethe lever.

Any adjustment of the automatic volume setting willbe cancelled when your hearing aid is turned off.

Important: If the volume in your hearing aid is tooloud or too weak, or if the reproduced sounds aredistorted, or you would like any further information,consult the hearing healthcare professional whereyou received your hearing aid.

Left/right identification

If you are wearing hearing aids on both ears, it is easyto tell them apart as the right-ear hearing aid has ared dot and the left-ear hearing aid a blue dot.

Senso Diva listening programs

Your Senso Diva may be equipped with a number oflistening programs. Your hearing healthcare profes-sional can help you select the programs that are ofuse to you and make them available on the hearingaid program switch. If your needs change over time,the combination of listening programs can bechanged. In these user’s instructions, the hearinghealthcare professional can list the listening pro-grams that are available on the program switch.

Listening programs:M: “M” stands for Microphone and is the standardsetting. It is the listening program for ordinary lis-tening situations.

T: “T” stands for Telecoil. The telecoil can be usedfor telephone use and/or for induction loop use (forcertain assistive listening devices).

M+T: “M+T” stands for a combination of micro-phone and telecoil (M+T). If you activate “M+T”you can use the telephone and still hear the sur-rounding sounds.

Music: The music program is optimized for listen-ing to music. The music program is not available inall Senso Diva models.

Switch between the programsby using the switch on thebattery compartment cover.Each time you switch to an-other program, you will hearbeep-tones. The number ofbeeps tells you which programyou are in; one beep-tone for

program 1, two beep-tones for program 2, threebeep-tones for program 3 and four beep-tones forprogram 4. Please note that if, for example, you onlyhave 3 programs, program 3 will be followed by pro-gram 1 as you switch programs.

If you – in consultation with your hearing healthcareprofessional – decide on other combinations of pro-grams later, these can be written on the blank formsfound at the back of these instructions.

Placing Senso Diva in the ear

Before inserting the hearing aid, you must place abattery in the battery compartment and close thebattery compartment cover.

Hold your hearing aid with your thumb and forefin-ger. Slowly guide the hearing aid into your ear canaluntil you feel resistance. Let go of the hearing aidand use the tip of your forefinger to gently push thehearing aid into your ear until it rests comfortably inyour canal.

To ease the final adjustmentsit can be a help to pull theouter ear backwards and up-wards with the opposite hand.

Removing Senso Diva

Hold the hearing aid withyour thumb and forefinger andpull gently. If it is difficult toloosen the hearing aid it mayhelp to try to move the hearingaid gently from side to side. Itmay also help to pull the outerear upwards and backwards

while applying a little pressure around the ear open-ing with the opposite forefinger.

Caring for your hearing aid

Take good care of your hearing aidWith proper care, your hearing aid will give youyears of reliable service. Here are some things youcan do to prolong the life of your aid:

• Treat your hearing aid as the valuable object itis: with care. Keep it in its case in a cool, drylocation where it cannot be reached by childrenor pets.

• Switch your hearing aid off when it is not inuse. Should you not use it for a day or more,take out the battery to avoid battery leakage.

• Never expose it to extreme temperatures orhigh humidity.

• Do not wear your aid in the shower or swim-ming, or when using a hair dryer, hair spray, orother sprays.

• Never try to open or repair the hearing aidyourself.

• Do not wear your hearing aid during short-wave diathermy, x-ray, MR scans, CT scans, orsimilar radiation treatments. Some types of ra-diation can damage your hearing aid. Othertypes of radiation from, for example, room sur-veillance equipment, burglar alarms, and cellu-lar telephones, are weaker and will not damageyour hearing aid.

• Widex hearing aids are not certified for use inmines or other areas with explosive gases.

Keeping Senso Diva clean

Because your Senso Diva isworn in your ear canal, it isvery important for its perfor-mance that you inspect andclean the instrument daily.Never wash your Senso Divain water, cleaning solutions orother liquids. Instead, clean

your hearing aid daily with a dry soft cloth to keepthe outside dry and clean of residue, wax, etc. Werecommend that every time you take the hearing aidout of your ear, you inspect the sound outlet and themicrophone and relief vent openings to ensure thatno dirt has gathered there. Below is an example ofhow the sound outlet and the relief vent and micro-

phone openings can bepositioned. They may beplaced in a slightly dif-ferent way on your hear-ing aid.

Cleaning the sound outletIf wax has gatheredaround the sound outletthis should be removedwith the small brush. Itis important that thesound outlet is neverblocked.

Cleaning the relief vent openingIf the relief vent opening isblocked by earwax, the soundof your hearing aid will change.In this case please follow thedirections below:

Insert the vent cleaning toolinto the front relief vent open-

ing as shown in the illustration. Gently push thecleaning tool completely through the shell, pushingout any earwax. Make sure the vent is thoroughlyclean. If the problem persists, you should see yourhearing healthcare professional for service.

Important: Never insert the vent cleaning tool intothe rear relief vent opening.

Cleaning the microphone openingsSometimes dirt may gatheraround the microphone open-ings on the hearing aid front.Remove this with the short waxremoving tool. Open the bat-tery compartment cover andturn the hearing aid so the bat-

tery compartment cover is facing downwards. Guidethe wax removing tool through the microphoneopening on the battery compartment cover from theinside as illustrated.

Do not insert any objects into the microphoneitself.

The CeruSTOP™ wax guard

Please read carefully and follow theseinstructions for using your wax guard.Earwax is one of the main causes of hearing aid mal-function. During daily use, earwax can work its wayinto the sound outlet of your hearing aid and par-tially or completely block the passage of sound.Completely-In-The-Canal (CIC) instruments are es-pecially vulnerable to wax problems due to theirplacement deep in the ear canal. By using a waxguard you can protect your CIC or In-The-Ear(ITE) instruments from earwax, thereby minimiz-ing earwax-related problems.

When should I change my wax guard?Since the amount of earwax produced by each indi-vidual can vary dramatically, it is recommended thatthe wax guard be checked daily.

If the hearing aid is weak/silent or if wax is visible inthe wax guard, it’s time to change the wax guard.

Removing the used wax guard

Wipe away any visible wax from the shell of yourhearing instrument. The used wax guard is in thestainless steel bushing of the sound outlet.

With the gray holder perpendicular to the face of thebushing, insert the removal hook into the used waxguard so that the shaft of the holder is touching therim of the wax guard, then slowly pull the wax guardstraight out.

Do not pry or twist the wax guard from the bushing.

Inserting a new wax guard

Now turn the gray holder around so that the usedwax guard is away from the instrument and the newone is in position to be inserted into your hearing in-strument.

Gently press the new wax guard straight into theopening of the sound outlet. Do not force the waxguard into the sound outlet. The outer ring of thewax guard should sit flat on the stainless steel bush-ing.

Then pull the holderstraight out. Do not pryor twist the gray holder.The new wax guard willautomatically dismountfrom the holder and re-main in place.

After inserting the newwax guard, discard theholder with the usedwax guard attached tothe removal hook.

Never reuse a waxguard.

Note: If the wax guard fits loosely, discard it andinsert another.

Are there times when I should not usethe wax guard?If a medical condition exists, such as a perforatedeardrum, or if an ointment is used do not use the waxguard.

If you have any questions regarding your wax guard,please contact your hearing healthcare professional.

The use of CeruSTOP™ wax guard does not elimi-nate the need for daily cleaning procedures.

WARNINGIf the wax guard becomes dislodged from the hear-ing aid while in the ear canal, please contact yourphysician immediately. Do not try to remove thewax guard from your ear canal yourself.

• Please be sure to keep your hearing aid and itsaccessories out of the reach of children, whomay place them in their mouths. Also keepbatteries out of children’s reach and discardused batteries carefully. Do not change batter-ies in front of children or let them see whereyou keep your supply.

• Never put batteries in your mouth for anyreason and never let a child obtain a batteryor place it in his or her mouth. In case ofingestion, contact your physician immediatelyand The National Button Battery IngestionHotline at: (202) 625-3333.

• The hearing aid is made of modern non-aller-genic materials. Still, in rare cases skin irrita-tion can occur. If you notice skin irritation inor around your ear or ear canal, contact yourhearing healthcare professional.

Getting used to the hearing aid

There is only one wayWhether you are an experienced or a new user, onlyconsistent and determined daily practice will giveyou the maximum results from your hearing aid.There are no tricks or short cuts.

Your hearing aid does not restore normal hearingbut it will make it much easier for you to hear andunderstand what other people are saying and to en-joy many other sounds. So, don’t give up. The learn-ing process will take time, but millions of experi-enced users can testify that the results are worth theeffort.

Beginning to use the hearing aidWhen you wear a hearing aid for the first time, youwill hear sounds that you may not have heard foryears. It takes time to get used to hearing so manyordinary sounds again, but with practice and pa-tience these sounds will become a part of your com-fortable world of sounds.

Start wearing your new hearing aid in familiar andquiet surroundings. Focus on the various types ofbackground noise such as a ticking clock, the tele-phone bell, clinking of dishes. Try to identify andlocalize the sounds you are not accustomed to hear-ing.

Once you are comfortable hearing sounds in yoursurroundings, you can begin wearing your hearingaid during conversations with a person you knowwell. Gradually you will become better able to par-ticipate in conversations with several people at atime.

In case of malfunction

The following pages include some quick advice tofollow if you experience problems. Before contactingyour hearing healthcare professional, please followthe advice below:

If the hearing aid is dead, it could be because:• The instrument is not turned on. Make sure the

battery is placed correctly and the battery com-partment cover is closed correctly.

• The battery does not work/is dead. Insert a newbattery. Make sure the battery is placed cor-rectly and that the battery compartment coveris closed correctly.

• The sound outlet is blocked. Earwax is often thecause of a blocked sound outlet. If the hearingaid is equipped with a CeruSTOP™ waxguard, change the wax guard. If the hearing aidis not equipped with a wax guard, clean thesound outlet of the hearing aid with the smallbrush. See page 22. Do not insert any objectsinto the sound outlet as this could damage thehearing aid. If you cannot clean the sound out-let completely, we recommend that you contactyour hearing healthcare professional.

• The battery contacts are dirty. Contact yourhearing healthcare professional to have the bat-tery contacts cleaned.

• The microphone opening is blocked. Wax or dirtcan block the microphone opening. Do not in-sert any objects into the microphone itself.Remove wax and dirt with the short wax re-moving tool. Open the battery compartmentcover and turn the hearing aid, so the batterycompartment cover is facing downwards.Guide the wax removing tool through the mi-crophone opening on the battery compartmentcover from the inside. See page 24.

If the hearing aid is not powerful enough, it couldbe because:

• The sound outlet is blocked. Earwax is often thecause of a blocked sound outlet. If the hearingaid is equipped with a CeruSTOP™ waxguard, change the wax guard. If the hearing aidis not equipped with a wax guard, clean thesound outlet of the hearing aid with the smallbrush. See page 22. Do not insert any objectsinto the sound outlet as this could damage thehearing aid. If you cannot clean the sound out-let completely, we recommend that you contactyour hearing healthcare professional.

• Your ear canal is blocked by earwax. Contact yourhearing healthcare professional.

• The hearing aid shell fit is too loose. Contact yourhearing healthcare professional.

If the hearing aid whistles continuously, it couldbe because:

• The hearing aid is not correctly placed in your earcanal. Take the hearing aid out and reinsert it.It is important that the hearing aid is placedcorrectly in your ear canal.

• Your ear canal is blocked by earwax. Contact yourhearing healthcare professional.

• The hearing aid shell fit is too loose. Contact yourhearing healthcare professional.

If the hearing aid is uncomfortable to wear, itcould be because:

• The hearing aid is not placed correctly in your earcanal. Consult your hearing healthcare profes-sional on how to place the hearing aid correctlyin your ear canal.

• The hearing aid shell has a poor physical fit. Thiscan be the reason for irritation in your ear ca-nal. Contact your hearing healthcare profes-sional.

• Your outer ear or ear canal is sore. It is importantfor first-time users to only wear the hearing aidfor short periods of time at the beginning. Theskin in the ear canal is very thin and may swella little because of the pressure from the hearingaid. Take 2-3 weeks to gradually get used tothe hearing aid. If the soreness continues, con-tact your hearing healthcare professional.

If the hearing aid performs intermittently, itcould be because:

• The battery contacts are dirty. Contact yourhearing healthcare professional to have thebattery contacts cleaned.
