We are coming up to the end of the first month of the new semester for any new courses and the second half of the year for other courses. It looks like winter is slowing giving way to spring weather—the temperatures are warming but the wind chill still remains. There is still a possibility of a snowstorm or two before we have to cut grass and swat mosquitoes. As the weather is warming up and the snow begins to melt, please ensure that students are dressed appropriately for the changing weather conditions. As students go out for breaks to enjoy the weather, boots and splash pants are needed to supplement or replace the winter wear. The next reporting period is in March. Students in K to Gr. 8 will be receiving their second report card on March 11. The High School students will receive their first report card of the second semester on April 12th. Although the report cards will be coming at different times there will be only one Parent Teacher evening and morning. March 14th is the date of the parent teacher evening while the morning of March 15th is the parent teacher day. For any parents that missed the last conferences in November we hope to see you then. As a reminder, should you have any questions about the performance of your child, you may speak with the teachers at any time during the school year by contacting the teachers and arranging a time. Our sports teams are currently finishing basketball and curling and prepping for track and field and
badminton. Our students perform well and demonstrate good sportsmanship when involved in competition. We are proud of our students in their efforts in extra-curricular activities within our school and in other schools. The course options for the 2019/2020 school year have been finalized. The first two phases have been completed. The list of courses that students would like to take has been prepared. The school timetable has to be prepared before students can make their timetable selections. Once there is a final decision next year’s School Division budget the school timetable will be prepared and finalized then students will be able to make their individual timetables. These final steps will happen during March and April. If any parents wish to discuss course selections for high school students or to discuss grade 8 student orientation into grade 9 please contact the school. The book fair was held in the school library the week of February 19 until February 22. Thank you to everyone who purchased books to support this literary fundraiser.

News from the Grades 3 & 4 Room
We have been celebrating I Love to Read Month
in our classroom this month by keeping track of
the books students have read. We will wrap up
our celebration of reading with an ice cream
party on March 1st. We also celebrated
Valentine’s Day in our classroom with a card
exchange, treats, and games.
The Grades 3 and 4 classes are working hard
during math class at multiplication in these final
weeks before spring break. Both classes have
been playing games, completing assignments on
Mathletics, working hard in their Jump Math
workbooks, and doing quizzes and tests on
multiplication.
We have been learning about Canada’s North and
the Inuit in Social Studies and have completed
many pieces of beautiful artwork related to
Canada’s North. We have watched many
interesting videos about life in the arctic in the
past and present.
Our skating days continue on Day 1 – March 1st,
March 11th, March 20th, and one extra day on
Wednesday, March 6th from 1-2:15pm. Please
remember to send your child skates and a helmet
if they have. We have quite a few spare pairs of
skates and helmets in our inventory but not
always enough for everyone who would like to
skate. We would appreciate parents sending
helmets if your child has. Or if any community
members have any helmets or skates (especially
in those in youth sizes 2-4) at home they do not
use we would greatly appreciate them for our
school skating program.

Book Fair News A BIG THANK YOU to everyone who supported our Dino-Mite Book Fair!
It was held in the Library from February 19-23. At this book fair we sold a grand total of $1862 (minus 5% GST = $1731.66 in Net Sales) This means we earned back 50% in profit as well as earning a 10% bonus for this being our second book fair this year and another 10% bonus for having our fair during I LOVE TO READ Month. We earned a total of $865.83!! I selected $654.50 in books from the book fair and the remainder will be used for books from the Scholastic Catalogues. Our Parent Event was held on February 19 from 3:30 – 5:30 and the winner of the Parent Event draw was Nathan from the Grades 5/6 classroom. He won $25 in books for himself and also $25 for his classroom! Our classroom winners were as follows: Pre-School – Everyone received a small prize K – Brooke W. Grade 1 – Kayley Grade 2–Maddison Grade 3 – Aloyse Grade 4 – Jade Grade 5 – Liam Grade 6 – Jamie Grade 7 – Alexis Grade 8 – Martha Grades 9-12 – Hannah Each winner was able to pick a poster or a book up to $7.50 as their prize, the Grades 9-12 only have one winner who got to spend $10 at the book fair as their prize! All entrants were able to pick a pencil or book as a participation prize. Congratulations to all of our winners! Another big thank you goes out to Mrs. Sucharyna for running this book fair. There is a lot of work involved in setting up the library and all the items for the book fair as well as repacking everything upon completion. Mrs. Johnson helped with some of the set up, and
Mrs. Rudkewich helped with some of the pack up and also deserve thanks for helping out with those tasks! Once again thank you to everyone for supporting this literary fundraiser for our Library, there will be several new books added to our shelves! Have a great month everyone!

Grades 7 & 8 News We have had a busy month in the Grade 7/8 room. Students have been busy learning about different countries around the world, compiling research so they can make a presentation on their chosen country before spring break. In science, we have looked at heat and are now looking at matter and different ways to classify matter. In ELA, we have started a novel study. We have currently read up to chapter 5, and are looking forward to reading the rest of the novel. The novel is called ‘The Breadwinner’ and takes place in Afghanistan. The main character, Parvana is experiencing life under the Taliban rule, and we are quickly learning that her life is very different from the lives that we are living. Our Spring Cleaning Basket Raffle fundraiser is almost ready to begin; we just have a few small details left to finish up with. Make sure to keep an eye out for students selling raffle tickets! Tickets are expected to cost $2 for 1 ticket or $5 for 3 tickets. We are also planning on having a bake sale during noon hour before spring break. Once more details are figured out, we will be sending information home with students. Students will also be selling Tupperware as a third fundraiser, so if you are interested please talk to a student that you know in Grade 7 or 8!

Using funds from the Early Childhood Initiative Grant, Turtle River School Division will
be offering a program for students who will begin Kindergarten in September 2019. An
instructor with early years education training will be conducting a series activity days in
Alonsa School.
The objective of this project is to have our children learn the necessary pre-reading, numeracy, and
social skills in a relaxed and entertaining environment and to lay the foundation for positive school
experiences in the future. (This program will not replace nursery school, but will enhance it. We will
be working closely with the nursery school teachers in each community.)
