1 Big Fisherman Cove and Marine Conservation In the mid-1980s, the State of California established Big Fisherman Cove as a Marine Life Refuge. Anchoring and fishing are prohibited, which helps protect the habitats and organisms within, as well as scientific experiments deployed in the cove. As of 2012, Big Fisherman Cove has become part of the larger Blue Cavern State Marine Conservation Area.

2 Hyperbaric Chamber The USC Catalina Hyperbaric Chamber is an emergency medical facility for treatment of scuba diving accidents. The chamber is staffed by dedicated volunteers 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and has served the southern California diving community since 1974. This facility is an extension of the Department of Emergency Medicine of the LA County / USC Medical Center. Safety Notice: If there is pending helicopter activity at the Waterfront, follow staff instructions and move up the hill away from the area.

3 Deer Valley Trail and Road to Two Harbors The town of Two Harbors is a 2-mile walk from our campus. As you leave the campus, you will also find the start of the Deer Valley Trail on your left. This low impact interpretive trail was designed by USC Environmental Studies students. Walk 1-mile through island chaparral and grassland habitats to see a variety of Catalina's native and introduced species. The trail eventually connects to the main island road; take a right and follow the road into Two Harbors, or hike back the way you came.

4 Administrative Offices and Gift Shop Want to learn more? Stop by the Administrative Offices to arrange a private tour or pick up materials about programming. You can also pick up Wrigley Institute swag in our gift shop or join our public support organization, the Friends of the Wrigley Institute!

5 Greenhouse This 24' x 60' greenhouse features state-of-the-art facilities with two zones to support marine and terrestrial research. One side, known as the 'Blue Room,' was designed specifically for saltwater projects. The other side is known as the 'Green Room' and hosts mainly freshwater and plant research. By putting research on display through glass walls, visitors get an inside look into our studies.

6 Laboratory Building This building is the research heart of campus. The first floor has offices and an 88-seat lecture hall. Second floor laboratories are used by visiting scientists and education groups; it also has our Library. The third floor is reserved for USC faculty researchers conducting long-term studies. The third floor is only open to researchers and escorted guests.

7 Interpretive Center Don’t feel like swimming today? No problem. Several inhabitants of our marine reserve are waiting to meet you at our interpretive center. Field guides and staff are available to help you learn about these amazing organisms.

8 Sustainability Park From kelp for alternative fuel to new food recycling strategies, the Sustainability Park showcases the science of sustainability and our research into alternative ‘green’ technologies. Displays are changed regularly in this self-guided area. Come in, relax, explore and learn.

9 Cottage Housing This cluster of four cottages provides housing for visiting students, faculty and guests. The cottages are named for benefactors of the Wrigley Institute.

10 Blue Cavern Nature Trail This 0.7-mile trail crosses a south-facing slope and coastal sage scrub plant community. The view from the top of Blue Cavern Ridge is worth the gentle climb, providing a dramatic view of Los Angeles and Catalina’s rugged coastline. The trail ultimately circles down the ridge and ends at the Cottage Housing.

11 Residence and Dining Hall Our Residence Hall includes 11 furnished apartments: 9 one-bedroom units and 2 two-bedroom units. We also have 26 dormitory rooms: 18 are in our Residence Hall and 8 more are in dorm cottages. The Dining Hall is open daily and features an outdoor patio—a favorite spot for watching the sunset.

12 George and MaryLou Boone Center for Science and Environmental Leadership This complex of six cottages surrounding a central plaza was built in 2004. The Boone Center is designed as a “Camp David for the environment” where scientists and policy makers meet to discuss environmental questions and work towards innovative solutions. The Boone Center can accommodate groups up to 50 people.

Rest Rooms Rest rooms are located at the Dive Lockers, near 2, on the second floor of the Laboratory Building 6, and in the Dining Hall 11 .

Please remember this is a working research station with active, on-going experiments. While the Administrative Offices 4 and the Sustainability Park 8 are open to the public, all other buildings require a staff escort. Please call (310) 510-0811 for further information.
