2019 USTSA Hall of Fame Winners
Rodell Singert
Rodell started in the sheep business in 1976 when he purchased two Hampshire lambs from Dr.
Art Pope at the University of Wisconsin. He later returned and purchased a couple of Targhee
ewes from Dr. Pope and Jim Elphick. He quickly joined Targhee Association as member number
#199. He was grateful to have been involved with such great advocates of the Targhee Breed
and tried to do his part, even if he just had a small flock. He raised sheep until 1989. Mostly
recently he has helped his daughter, Rachel Pruitt of Bozeman, Montana, get back into the
Targhee business that he had so loved. Rodell has remained an active member of the associa-
tion, always advocating for the advancement of Targhees and the association.
Rachel and Rodell pictured here at the Banquet. I think he was still in shock!
Kuenzi Family Targhees
John Kuenzi was raised on a farm in south eastern Nebraska during the de-
pression. His family raised multiple species of stock animals, including a small com-
mercial sheep flock. He received a degree in Veterinary Medicine from Kansas State
University and after service In the Army Veterinary Corp, he joined a practice in
Waukesha Wisconsin in 1958. Dr. John and his wife Valeta purchased a small farm in
the town of Waukesha, and raised six children.
In 1968 with the referrals from Marge and Cy Winchell, and Jim Elphick the
Kuenzi’s purchased 3 bred Targhee ewes from the Beastroms. The Kuenzi’s started
Twin Hills Farm Targhees. Rod, Cal, Gerry, Liz, Elena, and Sandi, all exhibited Tar-
ghee's, at County, State, and National Shows. Rod’s first national show was 1969 in
Portage Wisconsin.
Drs John, Rod, Lana (Rod’s wife), and Calvin all practiced Veterinary Medi-
cine together at the Kuenzi Family Pet Hospital in Waukesha. They have been county
4-H leaders for more years and projects than can be listed. In 1995 Drs Rod and Lana
started Kuenzi Family Targhees. They have added numerous genetics to their flock
such as the Circle M National Reserve Champion Ewe in 1995, and the Glenn High National Champion Ram in 2000. Dr Rod also
added genetics via Laparoscopic AI of their ewes, using frozen semen collected University of Wisconsin Rams.
Dr John’s Grandchildren AJ, Mary Rose, and Virginia have all exhibited sheep that they raised and fitted themselves at
The National Show and Sale. Mary Rose has been the Premiere Junior Exhibitor twice. Many years have come and gone for Coun-
ty and State Fairs at the Kuenzi Farm. Many lambs delivered, many bales of hay stacked. The essence of sheep farming has not
changed, In the words of Great Grandpa Jacob Kuenzi: “ raising sheep is all about growing good Grass and Clover.”
While Club Lambs are a good way to get kids interested in sheep. The Kuenzi’s support the Targhee Starter Flock pro-
grams, because they feel it’s a great way to teach kids how to RAISE sheep.
Thank You to the National Targhee Sheep Association from The Kuenzi’s. Also special thanks to the Winchell, Elphick,
Beastrom, High, Richards (Nevens), and Mann families, for their support and friendly competition.
How about getting more Targhees East of the Mississippi?
Sincerely, Rod
