Huntington District Operations & Maintenance Program
• The Huntington District operates and maintains nine navigation lock & dam projects and 35 lake projects, which is more civil works projects than any other District in the nation. Consequently, our O&M needs for aging infrastructure continue to grow.
• The District is responsible for 400 miles of navigable river waters. The latest annual data (2017) shows that more than 64 million tons of cargo worth in excess of $17.3 billion passed through our nine locks and dams, saving over $1.1 billion in transportation costs.*
• Huntington District’s dams, floodwalls, levees, and stream improvement projects have prevented $15.6 billion in flood damages through fiscal year 2018.**
*Source: USACE Waterborne Commerce Statistics (collected by Huntington District’s Planning Center of Expertise for Inland Navigation). Values estimated from 2012 NDSU Commodity Valuation Study, values indexed by CPI to 2017 price level Transportation Rate Savings calculated to 2018 price level.
