The Noble Meaning In Personal Greening

Global Warming’s graduation from hypothesis to practicality has

all of us asking “what can I do” to solve a problem so large.

Living Green

MCG’s New Ft. Lauderdale Offi ce

Montgomery Consulting Group (MCG) opened a new Florida offi ce earlier this summer, adja-

cent to the Intercoastal Waterway on Oakland Park Boulevard, in the heart of Ft. Lauderdale.

MCG is pleased to announce that we are now certifi ed as a Broward County - Community Disadvan-

tage Business Enterprise (CDBE).

MCG has participated and is cur-

rently participating in numerous

projects in and around Broward

County since our founding in 1995,

including work on projects at the Ft.

Lauderdale-Hollywood International

Airport (FLL), North Perry Airport

(HWO), and with the Florida De-

partment of Transportation’s District

4 offi ce.

MCG’s Ft. Lauderdale staff is focusing on serving aviation, transportation, and infrastructure markets

for government and private sectors, emphasizing our growing capabilities in geographic information

systems (GIS).

Colleague Chronicle:Prateek SharmaProject Planner/GIS AnalystMontgomery Consulting Group, Inc.

Prateek Sharma joined Montgom-

ery Consulting three years ago as

an Aviation Planner and Geographic

Information Systems (GIS) Analyst. His

current projects include the North Perry

Airport Master Plan Update, the Ft.

Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport Layout

Plan Update, and the Naples Part 150

Noise Study Update.

Born where family, extended family and friends are one grand in-

formal family, Prateek hails from the largest democracy in the world:

India. With talented friends from a vast diversity of cultures and

religions, Prateek says of India, “our ‘so called’ third world country is

home to some of the smartest brains and hardest working people in

the world. There are so many religious holidays, that growing up you

get to experience every type of culture, religion, and food because of

your neighbors and friends.”

After receiving a bachelor’s degree in architecture from India’s Insti-

tute of Environmental Design, Prateek earned his Masters in City and

Regional Planning from Ohio State University. Wife Ranu, also an

architect and regional planner, shares Prateek’s vocation and avoca-

tions. Prateek’s sister has her Masters in Computer Application and

is in the IT industry, and his parents are engineers. Wow… plan-

ning, architecture, and engineering are the foundation of the talented

Sharma family!

Prateek’s favorite foods include Mexican and Indian cuisine. A devotee

of fi lms like Hotel Rwanda, Shindler’s List, and Shawshank Redemption,

Prateek also indulges his lighter side with favorites like Indiana Jones,

James Bond, and My Cousin Vinny. In music, he favors Sigur Ros, Dele-

rium, Enya, Maroon 5, and Coldplay.

Carpentry, photography, racquetball, billiards, carom and ping-pong

are precious spare-time hobbies. Montgomery Consulting Group is

proud to have the diversely talented Prateek Sharma on our team!

Do a thermostat, light bulb, and recycling check of your own prem-

ises and follow green offi ce rules on home computers and printers.

Check out hardware and software solutions that tie personal com-

puters to home thermostats, water heaters, and lighting. Think how

cool you would be at the water cooler when you tell co-workers you

just switched on your air conditioning and hot tub! Be alert to “peak

time” electrical and water usage. Be a pest to your spouse and kids

when you fi nd lights or water wasted.

Ask your kids’ school principal or your pastor what their institutions

are doing to be green. Go to bed an hour earlier… No? OK, stay

up as late as usual, but turn out the lights and raise the thermostat

an hour early!

The combination of global warming and this summer’s gas prices

have had one very positive result: The United States used 800,000

less barrels of oil in July this year than it did last year!

The Noble Prize

Do not be offended when co-workers, friends and family begin call-

ing you the green monster, because they are just green with envy of

your newfound wealth and sense of the planet. Feeling good about

saving money and our environment is not such a bad thing. While

you may not win the Nobel Prize, you are making a noble effort.

Client Chronicle:Oran JamesInformation Services ManagerHNTB Corporation

Oran James is the information

services program manager for

Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise. His current

responsibilities include assisting FDOT

and the Turnpike’s production manage-

ment with information technology (IT)

infrastructure and day-to-day manage-

ment of IT personnel. Oran is based at

Turnpike Headquarters, Mile Post 263 along Florida’s Turnpike.

Hailing originally from Gainesville, Oran holds a Bachelors of Sci-

ence degree in Information Technology and claims that the favorite

thing about his hometown is his alma mater, The University of Florida.

Alumni that he is, he proudly chants “Go Gators!”

Oran is quite the family man. Wife Juliana is a registered nurse and

facility administrator for a medical group in Orlando. Oran loves Ju-

liana’s 5’10” height, and spends as much of his limited free time with

her as possible. The couple has a lot of fun, but is kept very busy with

three kids, twin sons and a daughter. Oran explains his kids keep him

moving. Moments of downtime are spent watching Dora the Explorer

or Curious George. If not cleaning up after the kids, his favorite hob-

bies include reading, playing XBOX games, and wrestling…. with the

kids.

Oran’s favorite meal is chicken caesar salad and his favorite res-

taurant is Cracker Barrel. He admits these preferences are subject

to change from time to time. His movie favorite: The Matrix (what a

techie!); favorite book: The Bible; favorite band: Tony, Toni, Tone; fa-

vorite singer: Maxwell; and vacation destination of choice: the Baha-

mas. One of Oran’s favorite moments occurred when he met Shaquille

O’Neal while in downtown Orlando; noting, the dude is BIG!

Oran admits that at times he likes to act the class clown, which got

him into a little trouble in high school, but makes him a delight to work

with! MCG looks forward to working with this talented IT professional

and are pleased to become a subconsultant to HNTB for the General

Consultant Contract for Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise.

MCG Sponsors Mud Volleyball at Florida’s Turnpike

This year’s Mud Volleyball Tournament was HOG WILD! Over

$7,700 was raised by the Turnpike teams to support the March

of Dimes, a nonprofi t organization that is dedicated to improving the

health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and

infant mortality.

There were 30 participants from the Turnipke —on 3 different

teams—all getting down and dirty. A total of 167 teams played in

the tournament, with over 1,500 participants. The March of Dimes ex-

ceeded their total event goal and raised over $193,000! This year’s

event was undeniably the muddiest... and lots of fun!

Kevin Welch (2nd row, far right) participated as MCG’s representa-

tive on Team ‘Road Hogs.’ Each of the three Turnpike teams met their

fund-raising goals to support the efforts of the March of Dimes.

Are you registered to vote? There’s an election coming up! Do you

know where your polling place is located? Voter registration is

required prior to elections. In Florida, you must be registered to vote

by October 6, 2008 to be eligible to vote in November’s general elec-

In Florida, early voting begins 15 days before an election and ends

on the 2nd day before an election. You can also request an absentee

ballot, but these requests must be made by specifi ed times prior to the

election. Participate in democracy, register to vote and vote!
