A Note From the President

I just want to express a sincere thanks to all

the ride managers of UMECRA for their diligent

work the past seven months. Without all of you

putting in so many hours of time, this sport would not

be possible. Thanks to the vets for your continued

dedication to this sport. Thanks to all the volunteers

who help the ride managers. Us ride managers know

every hand helps. And thanks to the riders who come

to the rides through sweltering sun, rain, sleet and

snow.

Our UMECRA family has had a number of

members face some pretty serious injuries this year.

Continued thoughts and prayers should be aimed their

way for progressive and thorough recoveries. See

you at the banquet in January!

Mileage Award

To Be Discussed at Convention

Approximately a year ago a request was

presented to the Board of Directors to add a

division for riders no longer eligible to place in

the Novice division but not able to ride longer

distances.

This request was turned over to an open

committee to investigate – thus the option of

November 2012

UPPER MIDWEST ENDURANCE AND COMPETITIVE RIDES ASSOCIATION

of 18

“SHORT COMP” was developed after MUCH

discussion.

The purpose of this new division would be “to

provide a place for horse and rider combination

that cannot or chose not to compete in longer

distances to work for yearend awards.”

Taken into consideration are horse and/or rider

with possible age or physical limitations and

inclusion of more breeds of equine.

UMECRA would benefit with retention of

members and acquiring new members thus

resulting in more ride entries.

All comp rules would apply with exception of

10-15 mile distance limitation.

Year end awards would be to top 5 riders with no

weight or Sr. or Jr. division. This could be

expanded in the future based on rider

participation. This division could be offered on a

trial basis (this has been done with other

divisions).

We need the feedback from riders as well as ride

managers in order to bring this division to a vote

at the annual meeting in January. PLEASE

respond to ALL members of the BOD with both

positive and negative opinions ASAP.

Time to Think About Nominations

for Rider’s Choice Awards!

It is time to make your nominations for this year's

Rider's Choice Award. This award originated in 1981,

and has been presented annually at the UMECRA

Convention and Awards banquet following a vote of

those present at the convention.

The guidelines to be considered when nominated a

horse for this honor are as follows:

1. A horse that has shown superior ability in it

division

2. A horse that has been a consistent competitor

3. A horse that has shown its ability to overcome

setbacks

4. Any horse, for any reasons, the nominator admires

and feels is a superior representative of the "Distance

Horse."

When submitting your nomination, please include a

description of the horse's accomplishments and the

reasons why you are nominating the horse. There is a

form on the UMECRA website under the Awards tab.

Rider’s Choice. Or you can just mail or email your

nomination. This nomination will appear in the

UMECRA Convention program, and may be the

basis for attendees at the convention to making their

selection.

Big River Ride October 27, 2012 This ride is a perennial favorite for Midwest Riders

and this year was no exception. Over the last three

months I had been conditioning and preparing my

show horse Ethan for this ride as his first LD. Friday

morning I loaded Ethan into the trailer. In the

process Ethan stepped on my big toe – ouch! I figure

I’ve got a 3 hour drive ahead, plenty of time for my

toe to heal, so away we go. The drive went quickly

and miraculously I found the campground without

getting lost (I frequently get lost). I pull in, find a

nice spot for the rig, and get parked. As I walk

around the trailer, I notice something is amiss. Oh

great, the drop down window on the tail side is a

twisted mess and there is a new dent in my new

trailer. Ride Manager Tony Troyer to the rescue, he

makes the time to help me get my mangled window

off its last remaining hinge. Not to worry, I’m at the

ride and it’s supposed to be a cool but beautiful fall

day for a ride tomorrow with no rain in the forecast,

the window will get fixed once I’m home. My big

toe still hurts but hey – who cares once you’re in the

saddle.

Ethan is settled in his pen munching hay and I head

up to get registered for the ride. Registration went

smoothly under the watchful, ultra organized Robin

Schadt. As I am hanging out chatting, someone says

– oh good you’re here, Linda Mower has your dinner.

My ears perk up! Way back in January at the

UMECRA convention I bid on and won a “cowboy

dinner” made by the Mowers. The original plan was

to have this dinner at Lincoln Trails but when I

couldn’t make that ride, I completely forgot to tell

Linda I wouldn’t be there. Long story short, not only

did Linda fix a cowboy dinner at Lincoln Trails

which other riders got to enjoy in my absence; she

went above and beyond all expectations and made a

second dinner which Eileen Kirsch and I thoroughly

enjoyed. WOW, this was completely unexpected and

a wonderful way to end the season. If Linda donates

another cowboy dinner at this year’s UMECRA

convention, watch out as I’ll be bidding to win that

prize again!!! Cornish Hen with dressing, corn

casserole, turnip slaw and finished off with apple pie.

My luck had turned around and I went to bed with a

full belly, ready to ride in the morning.

Ethan and I partnered up with Jane Huff and her

beautiful 4 yr old half Arab, Hollywood. We would

be each other’s baby sitter, and planned to take it

easy. The first loop, always the hardest, went really

well considering we were both on green horses. I

will admit, Jane’s 4 yr old really had it together and

was a big help for my 10 yr old greenie. The second

loop is when things got interesting for me. We

decided to canter a bit down the sand road when

Ethan decided to buck. In my head came the instant

image of rodeos and horses flying high as I hit the

ground. As I flew off, I did my best to keep hold of

the reins but finally had to let go. Back of head went

thump – always wear your helmet! Ethan just went

over to the clover and started eating, allowing Jane to

ride up and get his reins without incident. I

remounted and off we go at a canter. I now realize I

have sand down my riding tights with 8 miles to go!

There is nothing I can do about the sand but I’m

motivated to finish the ride! Jane keeps asking if I’m

okay from my fall. I’m feeling good but know I’ll be

sore in the morning and hey, by then the ride will be

done and I’ll be home. Thank you Jane for sticking

with me and Ethan, it was great riding with you. We

finished the ride with a half hour to spare and Ethan

scored all A’s from the vets. What a wonderful way

to finish my ride season! Thank you Tony, Dr. Wes,

Dr. Cindy, and all the volunteers who make this ride

possible.

Attention College Bound and College Enrolled Students Applications are now being accepted through

November 12, 2012 for scholarships for post

high school educational opportunities. Applicants

must have at least two years’ membership in the

Upper Midwest Endurance and Competitive Trail

Association. The applicants must have

participated in at least 25 rides sponsored by

UMECRA and intend to study for at least a two

year program.

Former Wisconsin members Ray and Audrey

Gehrig established this scholarship in 1996.

Additional tax deductable contributions are

welcome for anyone at any time. Many

UMECRA members have made charitable

contributions to support this scholarship fund in

the past. We encourage members to continue to

add memorial gifts and honorariums to the fund

to support this worthy scholarship for youth and

others returning to school. You can donate

UMECRA Shout Outs! Hi! I just wanted to say thank you for putting on such

a nice ride (Oak Leaf Run) and being so helpful to me

and my horse. I appreciate the amount of work it

must have taken to organize everything and mark all

those trails. (Don't listen to the camp manager; those

trails were marked perfectly - not overmarked at all!!)

I just couldn't make it to the awards dinner. I was so

cold and tired that going out into the rain again, well I

just could not do it. I fell asleep once I got warm. :)

Thanks for making our first experience in the sport a

very positive one. I am really looking forward to

next season now and I will definitely attend your ride

again and maybe bring some friends along.
