This will be a space for men to engage in new hobbies, find out about adult learning, and make friends in the neighbourhood and across the community. It will be an opportunity for men to share their cultural diversity with others in the community.”

Grants Available in November 2019Future Makers is a capacity building and accelerator program that empowers social start-ups who leverage technology to address social challenges for disadvantaged and vulnerable people. Shortlisted applicants will take part in a six-month program that includes eight days of in-person workshops. Participants will be coached by Optus top talent and business leaders and have the opportunity to network with each other and connect with other social innovation leaders.Who can apply?Future Makers is inclusive and open to start-ups, social entrepreneurs and not-for-profit organisations who have a solution that meets the criteria below. We’re looking for solutions that are already underway. If you’ve built a minimum viable product, completed basic user acceptance testing aimed at beneficiaries and have refined tangible milestones, you’re good to go and should apply. If you have a scalable plan or have launched your product to market – even better.Join other energetic innovators as you grow your for-purpose business. Throughout the program you’ll have the opportunity to enhance your tech expertise, expand your network and pitch for funding to grow and scale your solution. Why have we created this program? At Optus we believe that social innovation and technology can help solve the most challenging and systemic societal challenges of our time. Social innovation coupled with new technologies help us unearth and increase the pace of developing new solutions that address complex social issues, both locally and globally. Through technology, solutions have the potential to scale faster and more efficiently. It also enables us to rethink traditional models of learning. For example, virtual reality allows us to effectively change behaviour and develop empathy by seeing the point of view of others.Technology also has the power to make healthcare more accessible and affordable to those in remote communities. ‘Telemedicine’ services offer remote medical consultations, allowing patients to speak to healthcare professionals through electronic means. We’re also seeing how technology can help enhance the precise detection and diagnoses of diseases, which will minimise the time and costs of treating chronic conditions. Our focus areasThrough Future Makers, we’ve chosen to focus on three social areas, as part of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that we believe are increasingly important in our society today.

Good health and well-beingChronic diseases and conditions are on the rise worldwide. According to the World Health Organisation, chronic disease prevalence is expected to rise by 57% by the year 2020. We’re also seeing a large increase in mental health disorders, across Australia. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ National Health Survey: First Results, 2017–18, one in five Australians have a mental or behavioural condition. Quality educationWe believe that everyone should have access to quality education. Educational disadvantage is a huge problem in Australia. Results from PISA 2015 show that Australia has the largest gap in the shortage of teachers between disadvantaged and advantaged schools among all OECD countries.

Grants Available in November 2019We’re passionate about improving education outcomes for disadvantaged or vulnerable people. For example, we want to see solutions that increase the uptake of STEM subjects in schools and provide Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children access to quality education and support in remote areas.

Decent work and economic growthFinding suitable employment for disadvantaged and vulnerable Australians can be huge challenge. Unemployment of Indigenous Australians, youth, ex-offenders and people with disabilities is unacceptably high, ranging from 15% in some groups to over 50% in others. Technology and innovative solutions have the power to remove barriers that prevent disadvantaged people from accessing training or employment opportunities.Today’s workforce is rapidly changing too. According to a report from the Foundation for Young Australians, jobs in the future will require 30% more time learning on the job by 2030. We need to prepare our young people for the future of work. We need to equip them with the skills and capabilities to thrive in a new economy. Program detailsHow it worksShortlisted applicants will take part in a six-month program that aims to advance their technology-based minimum viable product and build their start-up, social impact and tech expertise. Community action grants to reduce climate change impactsThe NSW Government is calling for community groups across the State to apply for funding for projects that reduce the impacts of climate change in their local communities.

Environment Minister Matt Kean said the NSW Government has committed $600,000 to the Increasing Resilience to Climate Change (IRCC) community grants program.“These grants will help local communities plan, coordinate and take action to increase their resilience and adapt,” Mr Kean said.“The grants are funded through the Climate Change Fund which enables the NSW Government to better support the community in its response to the effects of climate change.“The IRCC grants will help our communities take practical steps to reduce climate change impacts such as heatwaves, bushfires or floods.”The grants will also foster partnerships between community groups including not for profits and Indigenous groups that will provide lessons on best practice approaches to community adaptation.“IRCC grant funding has already benefited Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils for a cool suburbs rating tool and Bega Valley Shire Council to upgrade community halls to be more climate-resilient during extreme heat events,” Mr Kean said.Community groups are able to partner with local councils in their applications for funding under the IRCC.Round 1 will be open until 31 January 2022 for community groups to apply for grants between $10,000 and $30,000.
