Technical Coordination

- assure the provision of host lab technical support to the experiment (≥ provisions guaranteed under “General Conditions for Experiments”)

surface assembly buildings and underground caverns primary infrastructure and services (eg power, water, parking)core expertise (eg safety advice and oversight)

-manage the provision and operation of common elements of the technical project and identify and coordinate additional common programmes. eg solenoid, shielding, cooling system, detector power, BRM, common cabling teams.....

-assure safe design, fitness for purpose, timely and cost-effective delivery and coherent, safe, installation + operation of detector systems including compatibility with:

existing detectors and detector infrastructureCERN host infrastructure,

accelerator complexCERN rules & host state regulations.

3-fold mandate

Technical Coordination

Common TC structure and reporting lines cover all types of activity

TC defined “consolidation & upgrade” as: ALL changes of configuration after Sept 2008 (ES, UPS, farm cooling, Gazprom, mag shields, BRM, ZDC, etc etc)

Boundaries are blurry:

Technical Coordination

TC essentials for upgrade

-Consolidation & Upgrade common fund (additional to M & O A and CERN as host funding).

-Safety team (+ subsystem links)

-Engineering + technical teams for infra & common systems, plus general elec & mech support

-Mechanical, Electrical and Electronic Integration Team (homogeneous)

-Planning and logistics teams (includes full ALARA dose planning)

-Recognised review process, including external referees, as applied to CMS so far.

(TP-TDR) -PRR-EDR/ESR(several)-MPR(several)-ECR-POR-TIP etc

- As-built engineering model and the Equipment Management Database, (the essential starting points of any intervention on the detector).

-Subsystem “field coordinators”

-Collaboration teams with detector expertise as common resource for subsystems

(from May 08 upgrade workshop)

Technical Reviews

Principle defined in Constitution of the CMS experiment, Section 6.7:

"Before launching the construction (or modification) of major parts of any CMS sub-detector or sub-system, or engaging in major related expenditures, the Technical Coordinator, with the agreement of the relevant sub-project manager, organizes reviews to confirm the soundness and completeness of the chosen design including the coherence of all interfaces with respect to neighbouring sub-detectors or other parts of CMS; the aim being to minimize risks in cost and schedule". review types: PRR, ECR, ESR, EDR : (follow-ups usually needed)In addition:“Each subdetector will undergo one or more MPRs (Manufacturing Progress Reviews) at strategic moment(s) of the production process. The Technical Coordinator will decide which production processes merit MPR's. The MPR committee will ascertain whether the manufacture is going as planned, whether the quality requirements and milestones are likely to be met and whether the resources (financial and human) required to complete the production are available.”

And in practice we also introduced “installation EDR’s”, prior to installation of items in CMS.

The same review process is being applied to consolidation and upgrade

Common Systems, Infra & Facilities: Magnet

Magnetic field off: ~ no useful physicsMagnet on-off-on: limited number of such cycles in lifetime (200-300?)

Highest priority:

Redundant Helium compressor pair

- critical single point failure : 7 mo recovery!

- replacements now only built to order, but provision for redundant pair foreseen

- identified pre-purchases (effectively compressor spares: rotors, bearings etc) to reduce downtime to 1 mo.

- Order placed (CERN funds: contribution or loan)

Common Systems, Infra & Facilities: RP shieldsA.Surkov, Wolfram Zeuner

Finalising design of RP shielding from Tracker Bulkhead to 11m . Single set of tooling, supporting shield from below, compatible with all activities.

-Aim to complete design by early autumn.

-EDR this year if possible.-Start manufacture 2011.

-Full test in LS1 (before needed for ALARA)

LHCC Milestone Level definitions

Level 1 milestones: are derived from the overall planning for CMS assembly & usually represent changes of dominant activity on the critical path

towards readiness for beam operation.

Level 2 milestones: are defined by sub-system managers and represent keybenchmarks in sub-detector progress towards the relevant level 1 milestones.Level 3 milestones: are defined by sub-system managers to complement the level 1 and 2 milestones by providing a more detailed breakdown of objectives and a mechanism for intermediate monitoring of major tasks in progress.

L2 “ready for installation” milestones and “schedule float”- L2 “ready for installation” milestones mark the date from which a major section of the detector is intended to be ready be used in the master assembly sequence.- They allow flexibility in tuning the master assembly sequence without impacting subdetector planning.

- The target float from the critical path is 3 months (usable as contingency during last year of construction, by agreement with Technical Coordination).

from LHCC meeting, 15 June 2004, updating 15 Mar 1999

YETS 2011-12: Focus now P-spikes 18.3m R5

Suspects: physical aperture problem desorption instability due to adsorbed gas

TC CONSIDERS THIS THE DOMINANT KNOWN RISK TO 2012 OPERATION

YETS 2011-12 planning is therefore being re-designed to give priority to:

• Radiography of both ends around this region and survey check from 13m to 50m.

• Bakeout –z end beampipe for 18 3 m ( same for +z end if radiography reveals no fault)

• Activate a so far unused NEG cartridge to double the pumping speed (increased threshold for desorption instability)• Install additional instrumentation in the 18 3 m region.

THIS ACTIVITY IS INCOMPATIBLE WITH OPENING THE YOKEbut the planned programme with yoke closed can still be done – with added difficulty

Page 25: Upgrade workshop FNAL Nov 2011 AB Technical Coordination Technical Coordination Session Technical Coordination for Upgrade (Austin Ball) 20 mins Responsibilities

Upgrade workshop FNAL Nov 2011 AB

Technical Coordination

YETS 2011-12 main activities

Survey, radiography and bakeout of 18 3 m region

Installation of the much-delayed ZDC crane (last chance - activation) Validate CASTOR calorimeter insertion with beampipe at vacuum. Install PLT demonstrator on CASTOR table at +z end (subject to MPR 17 Nov) Remove BSC to preserve for heavy ion programme

provide for tests of BSC 2 technology (focussed on beam-halo) Replace components in one HF RBX’s Install CSC4/RPC4 posts and RE4 demonstrators Re-work Muon Barrel DT system LV connectors New crane in CV room

Obligatory & advisory annual maintenance of services Tests of AUG, Diesel backup, Evacuation etc Re-verification of alarm action matrix (minimising collateral damage risks)

Input from Divonne TC workshop: 17 weeks needed to justify opening detector.Including vac work, 20 weeks would now be needed. Little prospect of getting a head start on LS1 work (such as Tracker humidity seal)

LHC plan post-LS1 & phase 1 pixel insertion

Case made to LMC for beampipe approval Aug 2011:

Unless we think there is a possibility of phase1 pixel being ready in late 2014, we should stick with this message: synergy with LINAC4 connection is likely.

Concerns: there are many!

-Cash needed in 2011- 2014

-Likelihood of a chaotic year for finances in 2012

-Maintaining the base of technically competent personnel eg common systems experts field coordinators

-Draft LS1 plan: beampipe rfi is lateHO HPD —> SiPM on YB0 is high risk and lengthycontingency for re-opening after CRAFT has started insufficient24 months beam-to-beam needed to be comfortable

-YE4 delivery: assembly pushes RP area completion in SX5 into LS1

-SX5 (OSC+ SL53) facility progress slow/blocked

-Completing retreat from ISR
