1st International Seminar Nanotechnology in Conventional and Alternate Energy

A Global Status and Pathway August 12-13, 2013; UPES Campus, Dehradun, India

University of Petroleum & Energy Studies (UPES) in association with SUNY College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE), New York, USA jointly hosted a two day event- ‘First International Seminar on Nano Technology in Conventional and Alternate Energy Systems, Global Status and Pathways’ on 12th of August and 13th of August, 2013. The seminar was sponsored by Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), Research and Development Centre of Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) and Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). A total of more than 200 participants from industries, academics institutions and research organizations from all over the country attended the seminar. The seminar had four technical sessions with a panel discussion at the end of each. The agenda of the Seminar is given in the Annexure A. Day 1: Inaugural Session At UPES, the delegates and speakers received a warm and rousing traditional Indian welcome. Mrs. Radhika Jha, Additional Secretary, Higher Education, Government of Uttarakhand was the Chief Guest of the seminar. Dr. R. K. Malhotra-Director, Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL, R&D), Dr. Pradeep Haldar-Professor, SUNY, CNSE, New York, USA, Dr. Parag Diwan-Vice Chancellor, UPES, Prof. Utpal Gosh-Pro Vice Chancellor, UPES were amongst the other guests during the inaugural session. Mrs. Jha extended her warm greetings to all the delegates and shared her valuable thoughts on the emerging field of Nano technology and its applications in the energy sector. She emphasized upon the role of Industry-Academia Interface in science and technology especially in the emerging fields like Nanotechnology. Dr. Pradeep Haldar and Dr. Parag Diwan-the Co-Chairs of the seminar presented the Introductory and Addressing note of the seminar. Prof. Utpal Ghosh raised points on the issues related to the commercialization of renewable energy technology and also gave the vote of thanks of the inaugural session. He emphasized on the importance of developing linkages with the industry and academic personalities in his talk. Day 1: First Session - Nanotechnology in Conventional and Alternate Energy. The first session, chaired by Dr. Sanket Goel, Vice President (R&D), UPES, started with a distinguished seminar by Dr. R. K. Malhotra, Director, Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL, R&D), who presented the Nanotechnology related activities in the O&G downstream and alternate energy at IOCL (R&D). Dr R K Sapru, Chief Chemist, Institute of Reservoir Studies, ONGC presented the ongoing efforts from ONGC on leveraging Nanotechnology in Enhanced Oil Recovery. Dr. Pradeep Haldar, Professor, SUNY, CNSE, NY, USA displayed the various research projects in Renewable

Energy done at CNSE, while Dr. V Aravind, Clarion University, PA, USA, showed the various Nanoscale Characterization techniques in Alternative Energy Technologies. The session was concluded with an active panel discussion and interaction with the participants. Day 1: Second Session - State of Development of Nanotechnology: A Global Snapshot 2013. The second technical session on the first day of the seminar was on State of Development of Nanotechnology: A Global Snapshot 2013, chaired by Dr. Pradeep Haldar, Professor, SUNY, CNSE, NY, USA. Dr. Parag Diwan, Vice Chancellor, UPES presented his talk on Nanotechnology for Renewable Energy- The Indian Scenario. Mr. Ankush Halbe-CNSE, State University of New York spoke on Nanotechnology for Solar Cell, and Dr. Gyu Man Kim, Professor, Kyungpook National University, South Korea delivered his talk on Microfluidics-Biopolymer Microsphere Preparation. Dr. Makoto Hirayama, Professor, CNSE, shared his views on Worldwide Collaboration for Research and Fabrication while Prof Vijaya Agarwala, Professor, IIT Roorkee, talked on the Nanotechnology activities at IIT Roorkee. The session was concluded with the panel discussion on ‘What are the missing jigsaw pieces that will broaden the market for Nanotechnology?’ Day 1: Poster Session and Gala Dinner. One of the most anticipated sessions of the Seminar was the poster presentation session for the students, academicians and industry experts. Total 38 posters (26 from outside UPES) of participants from various organizations in India were presented during the session. The posters represented areas like Nano-computing; Development of Photo-catalysts, Nano material for High Speed Water Sterilization, Nanotechnology in Defense and Security, etc. This attracted the attention of all the participants and guests. Various institutions like Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP), NCET-Hyderabad, CFT-University of Rajasthan, IOCL R&D-Faridabad (Haryana), CSTP-Bangalore, North Eastern Hill University-Shillong, IMA-Dehradun, Amity University-Noida, etc. had participated in the poster session. Day 2: First Session - Academia, Business, and Government- Current Status on Partnerships The second day’s proceedings started with the third session on Academia, Business, and Government: Current Status on Nanotechnology Partnerships,

chaired by Dr. Pradeep Haldar. Mr. Ashwini Aggarwal, Director- Government Affairs, Applied Materials, presented his talk on the Industry perspective on the Nanotechnology partnerships. Mr. D.B.S. Sethi, Additional Director-Directorate of Materials, DRDO deliberated on the Government perspective of the subject while Dr. Manish Anand-Area Convener & Associate Fellow, Science, Technology & Innovation Area, TERI conveyed the Academic perspective on the topic. The session was concluded with a round of panel discussions on “Leveraging the Academia, Business and Government Partnership for Innovation and Invention in Nanotechnology”. Day 2: Second Session - “Be your own boss - Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Nanotechnology” During the last session, presentations and discussions took place on issues, such as, Managing the Adoption of Technological Innovation. Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Nanotechnology was explained by various Case Studies presented by Dr. Pradeep Haldar, Mr. Billa Bhandari, Dr. Young Ho Kim and Mr. Puneet Mehrotra. The presenters shared their experiences related to bringing up the challenges in commercializing a technology and how to overcome the bottlenecks to develop a suitable business strategy. Day 2: Valedictory and Award Ceremony The technical delegation of the 2-day seminar ended with the Valedictory speech by Prof. Utpal Ghosh (Pro-Vice Chancellor, UPES) who summarized the key learning from the various sessions of the Seminar and thanked everyone who participated in the Seminar. Further, he along with the other conveners gave away the awards for the best posters. After rigorous judging by a panel consisting of members from the academics, government and industry, a total of 7 posters were given the awards. The award winners and their poster-titles is given in the Annexure B. Day 2: Cultural Eve, presented by UPES students An hour long cultural show presented by UPES students under the able coordination by the Department of Students’ Affairs enthralled the Seminar participants. The cultural show included dance performances by the Hip-Hop group, instrumental recitals by Jaskaran Singh (Sarangi), (Guitar) and (Flute). Summary and Pathway Overall the two days left a mesmerizing experience and many take-home messages to the participants which will lead to further network for future. Few recommendations –

1. The Seminar should be an annual event continue to focusing on Nanotechnology for Energy 2. Every-year a background paper and white-paper should be developed to share with various

stakeholders 3. Next year’s event should be aimed for July/August 2014 and preparations should be started at the

earliest 4. The recommendations of the event should be shared with various stakeholders, such as

Government (Central/State), Industry and Academia
