DESCRIPTION

As of December 2009, over 5,000 cages have been dismantled. An inventory prior to elections shows 1,700 more illegal cages and reports after that say more are being built, larger than prescribed sizes. No dismantling efforts as yet in 2010.

Accomplishments by the Inter-Agency Task Force in Taal Lake

 CY 2008 On June 12, 2008 ( Independence Day) the dismantling

of fish pens and other structures within Pansipit River was started by the Task Force . The logistics were provided by the Provincial government of Batangas with the DENR and BFAR and other member agencies ( inc. NGOs/POs) providing technical as well as manpower support.

 On July 31, 2008 or after 45 days, the Pansipit River was

finally cleared of all structures. A total of 164 fish pens and undetermined numbers of small aquaculture structures and bamboo poles were dismantled along the approximately 8 km. stretch of Pansipit river.

On August 2008, the Task Force started series of public consultations with the fish cage operators/care takers in 5 municipalities ( San Nicolas, Tanauan City, Agoncillo, Laurel and Talisay) where there were large concentrations of fish cages and other structures.

  From September to December 2008, the Task Force conducted massive dismantling of abandoned fish cages as well as fish corals. In the year 2008 , the Task Force was able to demolished a total of 1,538 aquaculture structures of which 1,048 are fish cages and 490 fish corals/baklad respectively.From January to December 31, 2009, total number of aquaculture structures dismantled are 5,131 e.g. fish corals, cages etc.) and distributed 5,721 identification plates.
