LETTER FROM THE DEPUTY DIRECTOR

Dear Community Members, We’ve now surpassed one year of this historic pandemic, and we are grateful to be see-ing more and more of our resilient community members receiving their vaccinations and public health conditions improve. As a result, we’re beginning to gradually expand pro-gramming in accordance with state and local guidance, and will continue to do so in a safe manner. Limited in-person programs will take place this spring as public health guidance allows, including classes for all ages, sports activities, childcare offerings, spe-cial events, and aquatics programs. We will of course continue to offer virtual recreation and learning programs during this time as well. As we continue to expand programming, this fall we hope to resume printing of our ac-tivity guide. Make sure to check your mailbox for details later this year! We hope we continue to meet your needs for opportunities for getting healthy, finding new a passion, and activating your community.

ARTS & SPECIAL INTERESTS

Cartoon Drawing for the Beginner — NEW! Age: 12Y & up | Instructor: Nick Stern | Location: Municipal Services Building—William M. Belloni Room

I was trained as a traditional pencil and paper animator and worked for ten years doing film and TV animation. The rest of my 35-year professional career was spent making digital games, often incorporating cartoon characters. I would like to share my experience designing and creating characters for animation, comic books and games. Instead of focusing on creating a finished piece of art at the end of each 2-hour class, students are encouraged to work on their own projects, over the course of several classes. I will give individual instruction as well as lectures on the basics of character design, background design, perspective and staging. No special materials necessary, aside from pencil, paper and erasers. Digital drawing is also acceptable. Nick Stern is a retired Disney artist and Grumbacher certified instructor.
