Judy Harthorn won First Place at the Grosse PointeArtists Association's May Exhibition. More deservedrecognition for a great artist!

Gordon Boardman, in his first solo exhibition In NewYork, exhibited a recent group of large abstractions atthe Frank Bustamante Gallery this June. "...Boardmanpossesses an uncanny compositional sense that is ableto clarify order in chaos without losing the visual, visceralbenefits of either. Above all he is an original...the factthat his painting is fantastic-both in the literal andcolloquial senses-only adds depth to its wonderfullycurious luster." Gerrit Henry, Contributing Editor, ArtNews and Art in America. Bravo, Gordon!

Evelyn Henry had a one-person exhibition at LivoniaCity Hall sponsored by the Livonia Arts Commission.Congratulations Evelyn! A busy lady, Evelyn receivedSecond Prize in the May VAAL Club Show held atLivonia City Hall, Honorable Mention in the Livonia ArtClub Show held at the Civic Center Library, and SecondPrize, two Honorable Mentions, and the Artist's ChoiceAward at The Palette Guild Club Show. (Whew!)

Located at 359 SouthWoodward, gallery hours are 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays; 11:00a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Thursdaysand Fridays. Congratulations on your new venture,Hans!

Doug Beauchene's painting, Watermelon Mood, waschosen from hundreds of entries as the Spirit 1993Cover Art Winner. The painting is a portrait of local jazzmusician, Ed Nuccilli, and is an excellent example ofDoug's use of "unconventional" art materials. Dougemployed a media he made himself using hardwarestore paint to which he added chemicals that producegreat brightness in the final work.

Doug, who is also a musician, has long respectedNuccilli, a composer, arranger and band leader. Heincorporated "floating" background symbols and brightcolors to represent the musician's ideas and musicalprocesses. Not only did this end up being one of Doug'sfavorite pieces; it also graced the July 1993 cover ofSpirit. Congratulations, Doug!

Long-time Scarab and Board of Directors' Treasurer, talented Steve Veresh has painted a twelve foot by tenfoot mural at the Detroit Science Center depictingvolcanoes in "action." This piece is being used inconjunction with their program, Ring of Fire, whichfocuses on volcanoes.

Steve was busy all year, participating in the DetroitArtists Market's Grosse Pointe Garden and Flower Showand the St. Claire Shores Arts and Crafts Show as well.

Former intern and member Lynne Lawerence has beenhired as Executive Director at the Macomb Art Center.Lynne enjoys her new position and its challenges.Congratulations, Lynne!

Cliff Harris designed the invitation for the grand openingof "Emanuel Stewart," the new restaurant that recentlyopened at Detroit's former 1940 Chophouse. His designalso graces the cover of the menu. Kevin Smith wasone of several photographers shooting the gala.

Sharon Sims recently initiated and completed a twelvefoot sculpture entitled Wall of Change for the city ofTaylor. The outdoor installation was unveiled during thecity's 25th anniversary celebration. The extensiveproject successfully tied together education, business, government and the arts.

All these areas are reflected in the quotes etched intothe wall. State Representative Gregory Pitoniak summedit up nicely, "Those who resist change are overwhelmedby it. Those who ignore change are swept up by it.Those who accept change shape its future." Words tolive by.

Special thanks to student resident Michael Vasilovcikand new member David Karustis for their efforts torefurbish the basement stairways and sketch sessionarea. Don Schneider and Roy Pauli pitched in on themuch-needed new model stand. This long-neglectedarea is much improved due to all of their significantlabors.

The Scarab Club was featuredon the front page of thisFall's The Advantage, the Detroit Edison's ThermalEnergy Division newsletter. The feature story was titled,"There's an Art to Trap Replacement." Last Summer, this division came to the Club and replaced or repairedall of our radiator traps in an effort to reduce our utilitybills. In addition, Detroit Edison gave the Club all partsat cost, an interest-free loan and free labor.

As a result of Edison's positive experience with the Club, the Detroit Edison Thermal Energy Division is now anInstitutional Member. Thanks again, guys, for yourtremendous support of the Club!

Inter View

As reported in the last Buzz, Scarab Frances Quint'sarticle, Making a Woodblock Print, was in the April issueof American Artist. We asked Frances to fill us in onhow this all came about.

Q: Francis, what first led to your writing this article?

A: The reason I wrote the article is because manypeople, including £.. tists, are not aware of theprintmaking processes.

Q: Since you also had an article concerning WatercolorWorkshops in American Artist magazine ten years ago, were you approached by them to do this piece?

A: No, I sent them an unsolicited article describing mywork. The magazine expressed interest and requestedstep-by-step photos of the process.

Q: And your response?

A: I had to do a print from scratch in order to fulfill thisrequest.

Q: Was this a print you intended to do anyway?

A: No, I did this piece specifically for this request. Ishould also say that in the process between sending thearticle and producing the required photos, I had two longphone calls with one of the editors. Changes were madeat that time.

Q: Has anything out of the ordinary happened to yousince this article was published?

A: I've heard from people I normally wouldn't have heardfrom.

Q: Has doing this article helped your art or furtheredyour contacts?

A: Laughing, It has helped my ego!

Q: Would you take the time to do something like thisagain?

A: I sure would if I had a new subject and something tosay regarding it.

Meanderings by Joan Brace

A painting is to the painter as a leaf to the trees-anexternalization of being, irrefutable evidence of kind andcondition, of growth and season, of decay and death. Some may be no more than a gesture or a smile. Otherstake on the weight of an apologia, a confession of faith, adeclaration of love-or open war. Some are the gameshe plays. And no painting can be greater than itscreator...As the tree is unconcerned with the botanistand his classification, so is the artist unconcerned withnames and labels which outsiders, for their convenience, apply to his manner of painting and his subject matter. Apainter is his own style and subject matter...He isconcerned with the act of painting, for him a necessaryact, and its result, an intellectual/emotional/sensuousplastic act. A commitment made to canvas, or paper, board or cloth. A painting can be destroyed. It cannever be denied. It is always revelatory. Though it bean anti-universe locked in one black square, orhermetically sealed in private symbolism, a romp withPop, or astigmatism by Op, or an antic Fauvism world, itis a piece of the soul's laundry hung out, a new leaf budon the tree, absurdly signaling to someone, no-one,anyone?

Pithy Quotes from "The Sense of Beauty" by GeorgeSantayana, submitted by Steve Veresh

on the nature of art:

The appreciation of beauty and its embodiment in the artsare activities which belong to our holiday life, when weare redeemed for the moment from the shadow of eviland the slavery to fear, and are following the bent of ournature where it chooses to lead us.

on Modern Art:

Our age is given to self-indulgence. Our public, withoutbeing really trained-for we appeal to too large a public torequire training it-is well informed and eagerlyresponsive to everything; it is ready to work pretty hard, and to di its share towards its own profit andentertainment. It becomes a point of pride with it tounderstand and appreciate everything, and our art, in itsturn, does not overlook this opportunity. It becomesdisorganized, sporadic, whimsical, and experimental. The crudity we are too distracted to refine we accept asoriginality, and the vagueness we are too pretentious tomake accurate, we pass off as sublimality. This is thesecret of making great works on novel principles...

Scarab Reminiscences:Butcher Paper Worth a Fortune

One of my fond memories of The Scarab Club is the pink

I lemember when the Club served lunch five days aweek and dinner four or five days. The table cloth wascontinually used as a canvas, sketch pad or just "doodle"surface. The Club wisely to decided to substitutebutcher paper in order to save on laundry bills.

Large rolls were purchased. And before the tables wereset, John Payne would tear off a long sheet and spread itthe entire length. (John and Bertha Payne were our live-in custodians. They were our cooks, waiters, bottlewashers, caterers, security force and more. But that'sanother story.)

The lunches were generally well attended. Many days, twenty or twenty-five generally graphics oriented menwould show up. Other days, Beaver Edwards and Imight be joined by only one or two others. If JohnCoppin was doing a portrait of, say, a governor or bankpresident, he would bring them to lunch. Or if ClydeBurroughs had a distinguished visitor to the Art Institute, they would attend. The conversations were alwaysinteresting. And if it was "art" talk, you can bet they gotpretty lively.

At the end of the lunch, that pink paper would becovered with all manner of art work. Cartoons, caricatures, drawings, many colored with the sepia tint ofcoffee or the pink of strawberry jam. Many times thecaricatures or portraits would be torn out and taken awayby their subject or the design of a new hood ornament ora new transmission would be removed to appear on anautomobile years later.

After lunch, I used to circle the table and tear off theremaining good efforts. I accumulated a whole pile oflittle pink pieces of paper in my studio, many by ratherwell known and/or famous artists. Many I'm sure werequite valuable. Iwonder what happened to thosediscarded bits of history. At least I still have thememories.

After the war I joined a school of painters in Paris. They believed an artist had to wait for inspiration, very quietly, and they did most of their waiting at the cafe -with brandy. It was then that I realizedthat all of the really good ideas I'd ever hadcame to me while I was milking a cow.So I went back to Iowa.
