Early in May, I received an e-mail from a friend in NorthCarolina. Kim had a story shejust thought people involved indementia support and careshould hear. She put me intouch with Jane. Jane sharedher story with me and I toobelieve this is a story well worthtelling and sharing. For manypeople, going with the flow of someone's inability tohold onto current place and time is simply a matterof responding with a phrase or supportivecomment. For Jane and her faith community, itinvolved much, much more. Raymond, Jane'shusband, got lost in his life. Rather than trying tohelp him remember what he had lost, this amazinggroup of people helped him celebrate an importantevent anew! Great new memories with activities, music, people, pictures, and relationships to fill inthose empty spaces. This is truly an example oflearning to live well and inclusively with dementia! Thanks so much for sharing!

Dear PAC Consultant, My 68 year-old husband, whohas Alzheimers Disease, justmoved to a locked memorysupport community because Isimply couldn't keep him safeat home anymore. I tried mybest, but it just wasn't working. He was constantly leaving andunable to find his way home, and always angry at me when I tried to help. Andnow, when I visit, he wants to leave with me and it isheartbreaking. People have actually suggested Istop visiting him. I just cannot imagine doing that. But, if my visits are making us both upset, maybe itis the best thing. Can you help me sort this out?

Use Music and Rhythm to Createthe Ideal Space, Mood, and Flowby Emilio Solorzano,Technical Support for PAC As I sit in my local coffeeshop, everything seems tofeel just right. The aroma offreshly brewed coffee stirs upevery time the door opensand closes. The chatter ofpeople talking mixed in withthe sound of an espressomachine venting pressurizedsteam is just loud enough tohear over my headphones, which is playing my favoriteplaylist. Why do these seemingly random thingshelp create the perfect working environment andmindset for me?

Drinking coffee usually equates to being productivefor me, but not always. Background noises help meto organize my thoughts but can be too distractingat times. The key to setting up my idealenvironment, or any environment for that matter, isselecting the right music.

While Stan Lee may have been a belovedcomic book icon, his case is not unique. Accordingto the National Council on Aging (NCOA),"Approximately 1 in 10 Americans aged 60+ haveexperienced some form of elder abuse. When Words Have LostTheir MeaningConnecting Families through Music

by Mary Sue Wilkinson, Founder - Singing Heart

to Heart

Brad is a hefty, tall man withwavy gray hair and a huge smile.Brad's got style; wearing colorfulbutton-down shirts, pants with acrease, and penny loafers. And Brad loves music. Heliterally turns his whole body intoa percussion instrumentwhenever I play and sing in thedementia care community wherehe lives. He listens intently, slaps the side of his leg,or sometimes the top of his knee, or his chest. Hisfeet dance on the floor in front of his chair. I'veheard Brad sing and I know he has a beautiful, baritone voice. But most days he just hums alongas he keeps the beat. Words are hard for Brad.
