EXTERNAL VALIDATION Last week Teralba staff participated in the External Validation Panel Meeting. This meeting involved TPS staff, as well as Mr James Brigden, Director Education, a Principal Support Officer and another Public School Principal. The 2 ½ hour panel showcased the variety of programs that TPS run as well the systems and reporting that is needed to keep this school successful. Overall the panel were blown away by all the great things we are able to achieve. The panel and our team discussed our successes and also offered suggestions on how to continually improve. As principal I wish to publicly congratulate the whole staff on their dedication and success in the External Validation process. It was a difficult process that took hours of preparation in gathering vital evidence that supports our claims but well worth the effort. SCIENCE WEEK Last week at Teralba Public School we celebrated National Science week. Science week is such a fun and important week in which all kids have an opportunity to explore the many sciences available. As I have walked around the school, I have been fascinated to see the many experiments that have taken place as well as the language that students are now using to describe the many scientific processes. This week on Tuesday 11th August our class (5/6D) made bridges. We built the bridges because we have been learning about how buildings are engineered and we are also learning about architecture. We built the bridges in groups of 2 or 3, using items that Mrs Dubos had brought in or items from around the school. We were divided into 8 groups that made many different shaped bridges, some of the designs were straight bridges, curved bridges, zigzag bridges and many more. To do this activity we had to move the tables apart just a little more than 30cm so there were no cheaters. During this time Mr Cole and Mrs Dubos were going around helping and giving ideas to the groups. The technical tests to see if the bridges were stable and could hold weight were done at the end of the project. Firstly, a toy car was driven across to see if it could withhold a car driving over it and secondly, the bridge's strength was tested by adding weights one at a time. All students got to judge the visual appeal of each bridge. The winning group was Jasmine T, Jasmin H and Sienna. In my opinion Lara S and I had the best bridge but I'm not the judge here, the scores are! Most of the class enjoyed this because it was crafty. I personally enjoyed this activity and would like to do similar activities in the future.

REPORT BY PETER

On Tuesday 18th of August 5/6D paired with 1B, Mrs Barnett's class and we did science experiments. Year 6 were in charge of the experiments and year 5 were the leaders of the groups with year 1 students.

There were six rotation groups and in the six rotations there was layering liquid, coke and mentos, vinegar and bicarb explosions, chalk paint, milk and effervescent tablets, and flying tea bags.

I was paired with Shannon and we were in charge of the milk and tablets experiment. Our tools and ingredients were a bowl, milk, effervescent tablets, dishwashing liquid and food colouring in red, blue, green and yellow.

When the groups started Marsae and Ava were the first group at our experiment.

In the experiment Shannon poured the milk in the glass bowl, then after Shannon poured the milk in, I asked the year 1 students what do you think is going to happen? They had no clue what was going to happen. So then me and Shannon put a tablet in the bowl and put some food colouring in the bowl up above the tablet and then the tablet started to fizz up and make some bubbles and move the colours around the bowl.

Then when the tablet stopped fizzing then I tipped the milk out and refilled the bowl with fresh milk and food colouring drops. After that, I got some dishwashing liquid, I put it on my finger and dipped it into the milk. The colours started to move around and make different colours like black, turquoise and lots of others colours.

I liked doing the experiments with 1B and I hope we do it again soon.

POET VISIT

BOOK FAIR At Teralba Public School we are always looking for opportunities to encourage a love of reading and holding a book fair is one of those; where our students can browse a range of titles and choose books that are of interest to them. Thank you to our community for supporting this year's book fair. We sold a total of $973 worth of books to Teralba students and this resulted in raising $150 for new, quality texts for our school library.

PBL Our PBL focus for week 4 was respect in the playground. The students who received this award displayed they can look after school equipment, keep our playground tidy and use manners. Congratulations to Hunter S, Brianna and Jasmin.

Last week our focus was being safe at assemblies. Teachers were looking for students who could show respect for other peoples’ space, keep hands and feet to themselves and if needing to move about, being safe in doing so. Well done Livina, Kendall, Brayden, Liam and Kane.

P&C Last week the Teralba P&C held their first meeting via zoom. I wish to thank all those who participated. As I was in this meeting I could see the potential of a much greater number of our parents participating because of the ease of Zoom. You don’t need to leave your home, you can mute yourself but still take an active role in seeing what is going on at the school. Some items that were discussed included the Canteen, Teralba P&C Facebook page as well as fundraising ideas. We anticipate holding another meeting before the end of the term and I invite you all to join us to hear what is happening around the school.
