Begin Painting with Acrylics!Acrylic paints are very versatile and great fun to work with. Discover the essential tips and techniques you need to paint with acrylics, including what you really need to get started. This class enables you to start creating on your own or confidently continue to an advanced class. This comprehensive, exhilarating course is designed for beginners and those who have minimal painting experience. Students learn about acrylic paints, mediums, gesso, brushes, brush strokes, techniques, substrates, color, and design concepts. You are getting hands-on practice using all the supplies provided and creating examples of all the techniques taught. At the end of the class, you go home with a spiral bound collection of your notes and practice exercises that serve as your personal field guide for acrylic painting.

Your instructor is Traci Wilkes, an abstract acrylic painter and mixed media artist. Traci is currently President of the North Platte Valley Artist Guild and was the host of the 2013 Feed Your Soul art retreat.

Bring your own lunch/drink/snacks and dress comfortably in clothes that you don’t mind getting paint on, or bring an apron or smock to protect your clothing.

Electrical Code Update (16 hours)This class covers code updates at the national and state level and is approved for continuing education for Nebraska and Wyoming

Digital Camera IDevelop your skills in composing and taking photographs. Shoot photographs with your digital camera and experiment with zoom lenses, exposure modes, flash, and image quality. Family History BasicsThis course teaches the ABCs of family history and genealogy research. If you have ever wanted to find out about your ancestry and just don’t know where to begin, this is the class for you. Learn about the family history research process which enables you to build an accurate picture of whom your ancestors were and from where they came. Learn how to organize your research and where to look for information on your ancestors. There is an introduction to both web-based and stand-alone computer software to assist your efforts. By the end of the class, enjoy a fully constructed research notebook on your family and family history research in the Nebraska panhandle. This notebook assists you in determining research tools needed for your research in other areas of the United States and beyond. Materials Needed: Please bring a 1.5 inch 3-ring (preferably heavy duty D ring) notebook with a 10-tab divider set to the first class. This notebook becomes your final project.

Engineering Club Date: Sep 15 – 25 In this club, we use computer simulation software to build virtual bridges of various designs. Learn to use the K’Nex building system to create structures and simple machines. Then using what we have learned about bridges and the K’Nex system to design and build our own bridges, in competition with others in the club – the goal is to build the strongest and lightest bridge. Look out below!

Robotics ClubDate: Oct 6 – 16 In this club, we build a robot, using parts from a Lego Mindstorms #9797 robot kit, and learn to program the robot using software on a computer. Then we put our robot to work conquering some challenges. Not as big or expensive as the Mars Curiosity Rover, but just as much fun!

Guitar Club Date: Nov 3 – 13 This after-school club offers a beginning exploration of the acoustic guitar. Learn some basic chords and songs and learn how to play in tune and on time. We provide everything – guitars, music, etc. Just bring a love of music.

Strategy Games Club Date: Dec 1 – 11 It may feel like we’re playing rather than working. Yes, we play such classics as Connect Four, Checkers, Chess, Othello, Mastermind, and Mancala, but the logical thinking involved in navigating logic puzzles and these games is really mental “work” as well as play. Just bring your “thinking cap.”

Embroider A Blackwork BiscornuA Biscornu is an eight sided dimensional embroidered object to be used as an ornament or pin cushion. The geometric design is worked on aida #11 (an even weave fabric with 11 threads to an inch). A single straight stitch is used for all of the work. Beginning Auditioning TechniquesHave you ever wanted to be in a community play but were afraid to audition? Well don’t be any more! This course is an introduction into the craft of the acting audition. It is an interactive collaboration between a professional acting coach and the beginning intermediate acting student in a group setting. The course objective is to take the fear out of auditioning and create a personal confidence and technique – skills that can be used in everyday life and improve public speaking, articulation, confidence and interview technique. Class discussions, include obstacles encountered during the audition, cold-reading techniques, and if desired, approaching the monologue. Lawrence C. Daly is a professional actor and coach. He co-taught “Audition Mastery” for several years in New York with Off Broadway producer and former Executive Director of The Shakespeare Society, Madeline Austin. Theater credits include performances at The Kennedy Center for The Performing Arts, The Shakespeare Company, The Studio Theatre and Signature Theatre, among others. His work also includes Twelve Monkeys with Brad Pitt and Bruce Willis, and HBO’s OZ with Edie Falco and Katheryn Erbe.
