FINISH STRONG: The Dodgers today continue the Freeway Series driven
by Lexus with the middle contest of a three-game set with the Angels,
following last night’s series-opening victory and the club’s third
consecutive win. Los Angeles is in first place in the National League West,
0.5 games ahead of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Today’s late afternoon start
will be televised nationally on FOX as the Dodgers look to get the upper
hand in the season series with the Angels, which is currently tied at two
games apiece. Los Angeles is 9-3 in July, has been victorious in 36 of its
last 51 contests since May 7 and has posted a 26-12 (.684) record since the
beginning of June, which is the best winning percentage in the NL over that
time. Following the next two games, the first half comes to a close and the
Dodgers don’t return to action until July 20 in Milwaukee, which is the start
of a 10-game road trip.
The Dodgers and Angels have played more games against each
other than any other Interleague opponents:

Yankees (68) Mets (47) 115

The Angels’ are the only team with a winning record vs. the
Dodgers since they moved to L.A. in 1958 (minimum 40 games).

The Dodgers dropped to 10 games under .500 on May 16 and
since then they have gone 36-16, which is the best record in the
National League over that time and just percentage points behind
the Boston Red Sox (37-16) for the best in baseball during that
stretch. Dating to the first Midsummer Classic in 1933, the club
currently has the second best pre-All-Star game record for a team
that fell that far below .500:
Best Pre All-Star Break Record After Getting to 10+ Games

THIS IS WHO WE ARE: Max Muncy’s solo homer last night gave the
Dodgers 126 home runs before the All-Star break, which currently leads the
National League. Los Angeles has deployed the longball in the first half to
great effect the last two seasons:
Dodgers, Most HR Hit in Consecutive Seasons Prior to ASB — Since 1933
Year1 Year2 Total
2017-2018 Los Angeles Dodgers 127 126 253
2000-2001 Los Angeles Dodgers 129 112 241
2016-2017 Los Angeles Dodgers 99 127 226
1999-2000 Los Angeles Dodgers 95 129 224
1954-1955 Brooklyn Dodgers 101 116 217
The Dodgers are three home runs shy of matching the team’s
record for most home runs hit prior to the all-star break (2000 –
129). This is only the third time that the club has hit at least 125
home runs prior to the all-star break (2000 – 129 and 2017 – 127).

BEYOND THUNDER: Max Muncy was up to his first-half tricks again
last night, going 2-for-4 with a solo homer and an RBI-single in the 3-2
victory. Muncy heads to D.C. tomorrow night and will participate in the T-
Mobile Home Run Derby on Monday. Muncy gives the Dodgers a player in
the Derby for the fifth consecutive year and will become the ninth player
(10 appearances) in Dodgers history to take part in the event, joining Hall
of Famer Mike Piazza (1993-94), Raul Mondesi (1995), Hee-Seop Choi
(2005), Matt Kemp (2011-12), Yasiel Puig (2014), Joc Pederson (2015),
Corey Seager (2016) and Cody Bellinger (2017).
Entering play today, Muncy leads the NL (min. 200 PA) in OPS
(1.032) and home runs per at bat (9.86, 1st-MLB), while ranking
among the league’s best in OBP (.415, 2nd), SLG (.618, 2nd) and
homers (22, 4th). According to Fangraphs.com, his 3.5 WAR is
tied for the fourth best on the Senior Circuit among hitters with
200 or more plate appearances.
In his last 33 starts since June 3, Muncy is slashing .313 (36-for-
115)/.470/.722 with 29 runs, 15 home runs, 22 RBI and a 1.192
OPS. During that span, he has reached base safely in 30 games and
has drawn 34 walks against striking out 31 times.
KNOCK ON WOOD: The Dodgers today will send left-hander Alex
Wood to the mound for his team-leading 19th start of the season. Wood has
been hot of late, winning four of his last five starts and hasn’t been tagged
with a loss since June 9. The native of North Carolina pitched against the
Angels on Sunday Night Baseball last week and picked up a no-decision
after allowing three runs in 6.0 innings. In his last five starts since June 16,
the southpaw has gone 4-0 with a 2.64 ERA (9 ER/30.2 IP) while punching
out 22 against five walks. During that span he has also limited the
opposition to a .243 average, while posting a 1.08 WHIP.
Wood’s only outing in his career against the Angels came last
Sunday, but he is 3-4 with a 2.96 ERA (26 ER/79.0 IP) in 13
career Interleague starts. In those starts, he has held hitters to a
.228 average with 61 strikeouts against 25 walks, while posting a
1.16 WHIP.
On the year, Wood is 5-5 with a 3.88 ERA (43 ER/99.2 IP) and
has struck out 88 batters against 18 walks. He has held hitters to
a .254 average, while posting a 1.15 WHIP, which is the 11th
lowest in the NL.
In the month of July, Dodger starting pitchers are 7-1 with a 2.69
ERA (21 ER/70.1 IP) and a .226 opponents’ average in 12 starts.
That ERA ranks second in the NL this month, trailing only the
Phillies’ starters (2.64). The starters’ 68 strikeouts in July rank
second in the NL, trailing only Arizona (70).
OFF TO THE NATION’S CAPITAL: Dodger closer Kenley Jansen,
outfielder Matt Kemp and right-handed pitcher Ross Stripling will all
represent the Dodgers in the nation’s capital next week as they were selected
to the National League All-Star team. Jansen, who was selected via player
balloting, and Kemp, who was a fan-elected starter, will both be making
their third All-Star appearance. Stripling, who was added to the squad on
Wednesday, is a first-time All-Star. The 89th All-Star Game presented by
Mastercard is Tuesday, July 17 at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. at
5:00 p.m. PT and televised nationally on FOX. \
Jansen is tied with Colorado’s Wade Davis for the most saes in
the NL with 26. He has posted a 2.23 ERA, a .182 opponents’
batting average and a 0.95 WHIP in 42 appearances this year
while tossing scoreless relief in 26 of his last 30 games since May
3 and successfully converting 22 of 23 save opportunities during
that span.
Kemp is a fan-elected starter for the first time since 2011 and the
veteran outfielder becomes the first Dodger fan-elected starter
since Yasiel Puig in 2014. Entering play today, Kemp ranks
among the NL’s best in batting average (.316, 5th), slugging
percentage (.535, T-7th), OPS (.893, 8th) and RBI (60, T-6th) in 90
games, while leading the NL with a .435 batting average with
runners in scoring position (30-for-69).
STRIKING FIRST: Scoring the first run has been imperative for the
Dodgers this season and they did it again last night, jumping on the Angels,
1-0 in the second inning:
