Trailblazers Board Election — Upcoming Dates March 7-8, 2015: Final Candidate Slate Presentation,

Trailblazers 2015-2016 Board of Directors Vacancies Two vacancies need to be filled for the upcoming Board of Directors elections. The duties for each office are: Third Vice-President. (1) Arrange for refreshments, to include, but not limited to: purchase, storage and set-up and clean-up at each dance session and (2) Manage and account for the “Kitty” fund. Treasurer. (1) Prepare a Treasurer’s Report for each Board Meeting, (2) Collect and manage the door fees and dues, (3) Maintain the Club checking account and signature card, (4) Arrange the payment of: callers, facility rental, advertising, Association dues, annual insurance fees, member badges, and any other Club expenses, (5) Provide properly prepared records for an annual presentation to the Board in April of each year, (6) Maintain 50/50, (7) Maintain updated Club membership records and the Club roster, and (8) Arrange for the preparation of tax forms for callers and federal and state tax forms for the Club.

Bill Haynes of Gilbert, Arizona was born in Texas and moved to New Mexico in 1957. Upon completion of basic square dance lessons in 1959, he danced for two years before beginning his calling career when he taught his first class. Ever since Bill has been pursuing square dance calling and promotion of the activity. Bill taught school for a short time before fulfilling his Army ROTC military obligation by serving as a Platoon Leader in Korea for 2 years. He returned to Las Cruces, New Mexico in 1971 to resume both his teaching and calling careers. While teaching school, he earned a Master in Education Administration. His calling ranges from Basic through C-3B.

Bill has attended several caller seminars with Bob Fisk, Melton Luttrell, Marshal Flippo, all of whom are well known callers. He has been the featured caller at many festivals in the United States and has an especially good following in the Southwestern states - Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, and Utah. In 1984 Bill moved to Mesa to open up a new RV park, Carriage Manor. From November through March Bill calls a full-time A2 through C3B Square Dance program in Mesa, Arizona. Bill is an American Callers Association member.

Congratulations to Marvin Fishman upon being elected as the General Chairman for the 2018 California State Square Dance Convention. Marvin is one of our newest Trailblazers member.

Cindy Farley and Jim Wampler were married on November 25, 2014. Cindy was a former Trailblazers board member and Square Dancer. She now spends most of her dancing time perfecting her round dance skills with her new husband.

Bill (William) Fryxell, a square dance enthusiast, was a past Trailblazers friend who enjoyed dancing Advanced with our club. A long-time Downey resident he succumbed to his three-month struggle with advanced stage kidney cancer on December 29, 2014. Bill (Willy) worked for North American Aviation, Rockwell and Boeing on defense and space exploration projects with a focus on the Apollos and Space Shuttles, including ground control. He was born in Moline, Illinois on January 4, 1938 and moved to Arizona in his early childhood. {Thanks to Barbara Shimomura for her contributions to this article.}

Steve and Mickey Klinger, you both are in our positive thoughts. We are wishing Steve a speedy and thorough recovery and Mickey the strength to help Steve on his path to a complete return to wellness. In late November Steve had a bad fall resulting in a head injury that in mid-January developed into some severe, life-altering medical issues. Now and every day he is doing better. A more detailed reporting will be published in the TRAILBLAZER shortly. Meanwhile, some requests from Mickey and suggestions. Please do NOT call Mickey. She has adequate supportive help from family and neighbors but still she had many, many pressing and necessary thoughts to process and items with which to deal. Get-well cards may be sent to Steve at: 441 21st St, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266.

{Editor’s suggestion: A card or email of encouragement to Mickey would also be nice.} Mickey publishes a daily email report about Steve’s progress. If you would like to receive these updates, please let Mickey know through email at [email protected]. Please try to keep your request for the daily updates list short and understand it will be some time before Mickey will be able to reply to emails. At this time Steve CANNOT have visitors. As soon as Steve is able to receive visitors, Mickey will let you know.

Robert remarks: “We are very anxious to hear comments from you about our Square Dance website service. We are close to sharing a new, fun feature but we would appreciate your help. Do you attend any special dance events? Multi-day dance events? If so, please use our schedules link and enter the name of the event in the 'Club Name or Event Name' box. Are your favorite special events listed? (Well, ok, not all the way.) An awful lot of [international] friends have been patiently waiting for those silly miles to go away. We need more clubs to know that you appreciate their events on our site.”

For the second year in a row, the year started off bitter sweet. Our January Dance weekend with Todd — I mean Bronc Wise — calling, was fantastic with the best attendance we have had in a long time. A great start for a new year. On January 16th, an email was sent out from our long-time member

Mickey Klinger. Please see article about the Klingers on page 5 of the February 2015 TRAILBLAZER. Those members that only dance on Saturday may not know them. The Klingers have been members of the Trailblazer family for over 22 years. From 2001 through 2011 Mickey was our Newsletter Editor – one of the challenging, volunteer Trailblazers jobs. Steve is now in rehab and on his way to a very slow recovery. Please join us and keep both of them in your positive, healing thoughts, and for Steve to have a very successful recovery.

Candidates for our Board of Directors are needed. At this time we are still seeking some new Board Members. We don’t have many Board meetings. Some of our Board Members have been on the Board for over 10 years, with the Marshalls, I believe, having the record for being on the Board. And they are still dedicated to stay on. Thank you John & Barbara. Thank you to the other Board Members who are also willing to stay for the next year. However two Board Member spots need to be filled: Treasurer and 3rd Vice President. If you have any questions about these positions, feel free to ask us this weekend or contact us. If you are interested, please let us know at this dance weekend. The Board makes the decisions about the future functions of our club. What a great way to help your club. The Treasurer duties are responsible for the club’s finances. The 3rd Vice President is in charge of refreshments and the kitty. Barbara Marshall has been taking care of this for a few years and would like to give the opportunity to another member to be on our Board. PLEASE HELP HER.

It takes several volunteers to run our great club, and some of the work is behind the scene. We couldn’t do it without them. Thank you to all of you that help out when you can. Your help and attendance at dances is what has made Trailblazers the great club that it is.

We are looking forward to our February Dance weekend with “the Dr.” Bill Haynes from Gilbert, Arizona. We hope to see all of you there. For those who have never danced to the Square Dance doctor – Bill is easy. See you in a square. Bruce & Nancy Rosenblum
