On the occasion of the birth anniversary of Shri Jawaharlal Nehru, our first Prime Ministerand one of the legendary visionaries of the world on 14 November 2014, we are productinga letter written by him to his daughter Ms. Indira Gandhi. This letter was written from theprison when Ms. Indira Gandhi was just eight or nine years old. In this letter, Shri Nehru notonly shares his knowledge but also reflects his thoughts about the interrelationship betweenlanguages and how languages help build up human mind and thus, Literature too. This letterhas been taken from the book Letters from A Father to His Daughter published byChildren's Book Trust.

The Relationships of LanguagesJawaharlal Nehru

We have seen how the Aryans spread outover many countries, and carried theirlanguage, whatever it was, wherever theywent. But different climates anddifferent conditions produced manydifferences in various groups of theAryans. Each group went on changing inits own way with new habits and customs. They could not meet the other groups inother countries as it was exceedinglydifficult to travel about in those days. Each group was cut off from the others.

If the people of one country learntsomething new they could not tell it tothe people of another country. Sochanges came in, and after somegenerations the one Aryan familybecame split up into many. Parhaps theyeven forgot that they all belonged to onelarge family. Their one language becamemany languages, which seemed to differgreatly from each other.

But although they seemed sodifferent there were many commonwords and similarities. Even now, afterthousands, of years, we can find thesecommon words in different languagesand can tell that once upon a time theselanguages must have been one. You knowthat there are many such common wordsin French and English. Let us examinetwo very homely and ordinary words like'father' and 'mother' in Hindi and Sankritthe words are, as you know firk and ekrk;In latin they are 'pater' and 'mater' inGreek 'pater' and 'meter'; in German

'vater' (pronounced Qkrj) and 'mutter'(pronounced eqrj); in French 'pere' and'mere'; and so on in many otherlanguages. Do they all not seem to bevery much alike? They have a familyresemblance, like cousins. Many words,of course, may be borrowed by onelanguage from another. Hindi hasborrowed many words from English inthis way, and English has borrowed somewords from Hindi. But 'father' and'mother' could not have been borrowed. They cannot be new words. Right at thebeginning when people started talking toeach other there were of course fathersand mothers and words must have beenfound for them. Therefore we can saythat these words were not borrowed. They must have come down from thesame ancestor or the same family. Andfrom this we can find out that the peopleliving far apart now in different countriesand using different languages must havebelonged once upon a time to the samebig family.

You will see how interesting thestudy of language is and what a lot itteaches us. If we know three or fourlanguages it is not very difficult to learnmore languages.

You will also see that most of us nowliving in different countries far fromeach other long ago were one people. We have changed greatly since then andmany of us have forgotten our oldrelationships. In every country peopleimagine that they are the best and the

cleverest and the others are not as goodas they are. The Englishman thinks thathe and his country are the best; theFrenchman is very proud of France andeverything French; the Germans andItalians think no end of their countries;and many Indians imagine that India is inmany ways the greatest country in theworld. This is all conceit. Everybodywants to think well of himself and hiscountry. But really there is no personwho has not got some good in him andsome bad. And in the same way there isno country which is not partly good andpartly bad. We must take the goodwherever we find it and try to removethe bad wherever it may be. We are ofcourse most concerned with our owncountry, India. Unhappily it is in a badway today and most of our people arevery poor and miserable. They have nopleasure in their lives. We have to findout how we can make them happier. Wehave to see what is good in our ways andcustoms and try to keep it, and whateveris bad, we have to throw away. If we findanything good in other countries weshould certainly take it.

As Indians we have to live in Indiaand work for India. But we must notforget that we belong to the larger familyof the world and the people living inother countries are after all our cousins. It would be such an excellent thing if allthe people in the world were happy andcontented. We have therefore to try tomake the whole world a happier place tolive in.

The DreamPakhi Saini

I waited at the bench for my 16 year oldsister, Reena. She was in the washroom. My mum and dad bought a soft drink forme. Five minutes later my selfish sistercalled me from the washroom. I sulkilywent there. I knew the reason, she wasdoing makeup and needed me to tell herthat if she's doing it all right. We latercame out and then went on. We were atthe airport to fly to California. This wasmy first time at an international airport. As we waited in the queue, I took out mylion robot, I had made at home. Reenagiggled. She thought that robotics waschildish.

I gave her a punch. She gave me a slykick. I blocked it. And this went on untildad had to come and put a stop to it. Inthe airplane, Reena and I had a fight overthe window seat. Finally mum becamethe judge. She decided that to stop bothof us, she will have to sit on the windowseat. Totally unfair! Anyway, I sat downnext to mum.

It was three in the morning. From mybackpack, I took out my robotics kit tomake some other thing. Reena gigledagain. I ignored her.

After making an aeroplane from thekit, I kept it on Reena's lap. She wassleeping.

Ten minutes later, she woke upand screamed. I laughed. She neverliked my tricks. I picked the planeup before Reena smashed it on theground.

We were all sleepy. I watchedan episode of Hannah Montanaand then went to sleep. The wholeplane was silent.

And suddenly, I found myselfsurrounded by building blocks. Iscreamed and screamed. I sawpeople walking by, people made upof building blocks. I cried...Simran Thakur

On the other side, I saw disgusting, ridiculous zombies coming towards me.I thought it was a dream...

I tried to open my eyes but in vain.Within no time, the zombies climbedover me and bit me.

I lost all of my hope and started tofall when I saw my own built plane andlion coming to me.

The zombies ran away.

I sat on the plane and managed to flyit. But the engine lost its power and theplane crashed...

And finally I woke up. Looking at mymum, I cried. She woke up and saw myarms and face bleeding...

Reena cried, "Woaw! Did your dreamcome true or what?"

My summer vacations had just started. Wedecided to go to a hill station. We chosePalampur in Himachal Pradesh. Weboarded our train in New Delhi. Una wasthe last station en route. So we took a taxifor our further journey.

On both sides along the road, therewere mango trees, fields of wheat and ricewith greenery all around. Farmers wereworking in the fields and also grazing theircattle. Soon I fell asleep. When I woke upwe were just about to reach there. I couldsee beautiful mountain covered with trees. On reaching there we first went to our hoteland took rest.

Next day we went near the mountainfor trekking. We took all our equipment andstarted to trek. It was a very rocky anduneven terrain. It was very difficult to reachto the top of it. On reaching there, we couldhave a glimpse of the whole city ofPalampur. It was very amazing andfascinating view.

The sun was about to set and we alsostarted to climb down. It was very tiring. We rested in our rooms, had our dinner andslept.

Next we went for rafting in rivernearby. The water was very chill andflowing at fast pace. While rafting due tosudden flow of water our raft was just aboutto lose the balance but the guide intervenedimmediately and saved us. We were verytired after rafting.

We came to our hotel and had ourlunch. We then all slept till 5’o clock. Weall had a cup of tea and went for a naturewalk. Our guide took us to a nearby forestand told us about the animals and birds. There we saw many birds and animals. Hetold us about the ecosystem of Palampurand how it is getting disturbed. We returned, packed our bags as we had to go back homenext day.

The Story of MaltiShatakshee Kar

Once in a small village near Patna, there liveda man named Lalchand. He had a small housein which he lived with his wife, Chandramukhiand daughter, Malti. He was not poor but alsonot rich. He had enough money in which heand his family could eat properly and fulfilltheir basic needs.

One day, while Malti was on her way tohome, she saw that the well of the village haddried up. As most of the villagers earned theirincome from farming, Malti was worried thatthey would not have adequate water to dofarming and would have no food to eat. Therewas one small pond about three kilometresaway from the village. Malti thought that thepond can help for a few days but what aboutthe ladies who have to walk long distancesfor water? They would get so tired!

On a Saturday morning, Malti went outand sat near the well to think of some idea tosolve the problem. She was not able to think.Suddenly, she saw an old woman who wascarrying vegetables in both her hands. Maltihad never seen her earlier. The vegetableslooked very heavy. Malti helped the womanby carrying the vegetables for her. The oldwoman was very happy and gave a five rupeescoin to her. Malti happily returned to the welland was looking inside it when the coin slippedfrom her hand and fell in the well! She said toherself, "What bad days have come! First thewell dried up and now my coin has also falleninside it." Malti was disappointed and wenthome.

Next morning, when she woke up, shecould hear the sound of laughter. She wentout and saw that a group of men and womenhad gathered around the well and werelaughing and talking. She walked up to thewell and saw that it was full of water! Shewas confused and wondered from where thewater had emerged. It was a miracle!

Malti understood a little later that the oldwoman she had helped was a Devi (goddess)who had come down from the clouds to helpthe villagers. She had never seen the womanearlier and she was nowhere to be seen again.Malti thanked the goddess from her heart andmerrily laughed and danced with the villagers.

Once upon a time, there was a tigercalled Kaalu. He had a daughter calledMiski. When Miski was ten years old,Kaalu asked her, "What do you want tobecome when you grow up?" Miskithought about it thoroughly but could notdecide.

Kaalu took Miski to his office andtried to build her interest there, but Miskidid not like sitting in the office. One daywhen Miski was watching television, shestarted watching cookery channelinstead of her favourite cartoon channel. She enjoyed watching it. She wasfascinated to see how little sheets offlour were converted into noodles.

Miski started making a variety ofnoodles. She made different colourednoodles—red, green, yellow. Then oneday she went to her father and said,"Daddy, I think I know what I want to do.I want to make noodles". Kaalu jumpedwith joy. He was very happy to know thathis daughter loves to cook noodles.

Quarrel of the ColoursAdhiraj Mahajan

Once opon a time the beautiful coloursof the world started quarrelling witheach other. Each one said that it was themost important and the favourite colourof the world.

Green said, "I am the colour of treesand grass." Blue said, "I am the colour ofsea, ocean and sky". Brown said, "I amthe colour of earth." Yellow chuckled,he said, "I am the colour of the sun and Igive you warmth." Red got impatient andsaid, "I am the colour of blood, love anddanger". Orange argued, "I am the colourof healthy vegetables and fruits like

mango, orange, papaya, carrots, etc."Indigo said, "I am the colour of ink—without me no one can write on a sheetof paper."

Suddenly lightning flashed and raincame out and said, "You fool colours, doyou know, you all are special, come withme, join hands and make a rainbow whichis a sign of hope and peace and if a goodrain washed the earth, a rainbow appearsso don't quarrel with each other and befriends."

"Get out of the class. If you do not paythe fine you have no right to be in theclass. "Please Sir, my parents do not havemoney to pay the fine".

"Do not answer me back. I do notwant any excuses. Just get out," theteacher ordered Keshav out.

Poor Keshav had to obey. Just behindcame Vallabh, Gopal, Mohan and others. They felt angry at the injustice of theteacher.

"We will boycott the school,"declared Mohan. "Yes, we should not goto the class. The teacher was unkind andunjust." Others agreed.

"We can boycott the school inprotest. But everyone must agree. Not asingle student should attend the class, then only our protest will be successful,"Vallabh advocated the formula forsuccess.

"Yes, we are all together," chantedthe students. Next day, there was not asingle student in the school. The secondday also saw, the empty school. On thethird day, the principal went to thehouses of students. They were not there.Nor were they loitering in the village.

"Where are they?" Parents andteachers were worried. All joined thesearch.

At last they found them studyingquietly in the big Dharmshala. Seniorstudents were helping and guiding youngones. And their leader Vallabh wassupervising while reading his own book.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, our first Home Minister and freedom fighter was born on31st October, 1875 in Gujarat. He was a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi and activelyparticipated in the freedom movement. He played a major role in integration of princelystates into India. His birth anniversary is being celebrated as National Unity Day. On thisoccasion we are producing a write-up on Sardar Patel, written by noted children's authorSurekha Panandiker, which shows his innate qualities that made him a great leader.

The principal had to apologize toVallabh and students. He assured thestudents that no one will be punishedunjustly.

This was the first lesson in peaceful'Satyagrah' for both, future freedomfighters and their leader.

Though Vallabhbhai protested againstthe teacher, he had full respect forlearned teachers. Once, such an idealteacher stood for a local municipalelection. He had no funds to spendon campaign and other electionexpenditure. His rival was a rich man.He was sure of his victory.

Vallabhbhai persuaded his friendsand schoolmates to work for the teacher.Their voluntary hard work and sinceritypaid. The teacher won the election. Thiswas the prelude to many successfulelection campaigns organized and wonby Vallabhbhai. This organizing skill wasutilized for wider national purposes byMahatma Gandhi. Vallabhbhai plungedinto the freedom struggle under theleadership of Mahatma Gandhi.

He perfected the technique ofpeaceful non-cooperation or satyagrahpreached by Gandhiji.

This first test was in Kaira. In thatyear, farmers suffered losses due todestruction of crops because of heavyrains and floods. They requested thegovernment to put off the collection of

land revenue. The government refused.Vallabhbhai came to their help. Heorganized the 'No Tax' campaign onpeaceful Gandhian way. He dressed likethem and spoke their language. He stoodby them and encouraged them to standfirm and refuse to pay land revenue. Thegovernment took their land and cattle. But the farmers did not surrender, ultimately the government had to agreeto farmers' request.

This success lead to another 'No Tax'campaign at Bardoli in 1928. This timegovernment increased the tax on land.Vallabhbhai advised farmers not to payunjust increase. He explained andconvinced the farmers to followGandhian ideas of peaceful resistance. He cautioned them against hardships anddifficulties involved. He prepared themphysically and morally. The governmentjailed the farmers, confiscated theircattle and property.

But women of Bardoli stood fastagainst all intimidation and difficultiesand continued the struggle. They werenot cowed down even when thegovernment sent the fierce lookingPathans to collect the tax. Theyboycotted government servants. They didnot sell to them vegetables, milk andother necessities. After six months thegovernment had to relent. They releasedthe farmers and returned their land andproperty.

Pleased with his success, Gandhijidescribed him as Sardar—the teacher.Sardar Patel led many campaigns or non-cooperation movements including saltsatyagrah, flag satyagrah in Nagpur, andindividual satyagrah etc. His rusticlanguage made him popular with peoplewhile his common sense and sharpanalytical mind, cowed down theopponents.

The independence came with a priceof partition of the country, riots brokeout. Sardar Patel as a Home Ministercontrolled them with firm hand. Hesaved lives of thousands of Muslims byputting them under army protection inthe Red Fort.

India also had to face the problemof consolidating princely states. TheBritish government had given them thechoice of either joining India or Pakistanor remain a separate state. Like a shrewdadministrator Sardar Patel used sam, dam, dand, that is pursuation, price andpunishment. He appealed, "we are allIndians knit by the bonds of blood andfeelings. Therefore it will be better ifwe make laws together as friends for thewelfare of our people." This had positiveeffect. Rulers on Indian side of theborder joined India. Those who playedtruant were dealt with iron hands of armyand police. Sardar Patel was not aheartless man. He did not make thoseIndian princes pauper. He gave them theprivy purses and few privileges.

Sardar Patel knew that an intelligentand patriotic bureaucracy, or a team ofgovernment servants is a must forgoverning a big country like India. Insteadof condemning them for serving thenBritish government, he trusted theirpatriotism and appealed to them tocooperate to build new India. Thebureaucracy felt proud and workedsincerely to honour the faith reposed inthem by the great leader Sardar Patel.

Sardar Patel did not forget to sendgifts and greetings to his friends andtheir family in spite of his busy scheduleand heavy work load. Once he came toknow that family of one of his colleagueswas surviving on pumpkin and leaves ofbitter gourd from their kitchen garden.Because of the curfew they could notget wheat flour or rice from the market.Within an hour he sent an army jeep withsack of wheat flour, vegetables andpotatoes.

When things became normalchildren of that family went to thank him.He asked to serve sweet 'suji ka halwa'to them. Children relished it. Thenmischievously asked which is bitter, thishalwa or the karela (bitter gourd) youate for few days and laughed heartily.Children joined him. That was the humanside of the Iron Man of India SardarVallabhbhai Patel.

Days back there was a kingdom namedPratapgarh. The king of that kingdomUday Bikram Pratap Dev, loved hissubjects very much. He was a greatscholar and as a righteous king lovedjustice. He looked after his subjects ashis children. Giving justice wasparamount for him. Because of his

charming behaviour and candidpersonality, the kings of neighbourhoodkingdoms also loved him. They hadaccepted him as their icon. Hence therewas no threat of enemy attack on thekingdom.

Pratapgarh was full of forests, rivers, streams and other natural

resources. It also receivedregular and adequate rainfall. The subjects were livinghappily practicing agriculture, animal husbandry, trade andcommerce.

There is a saying, that noone ever has either good daysor bad days throughout thelife. One day the kingreceived news that immensedisruption is spreading in thekingdom. Wild animals likelions, tigers, bears, elephantsare coming out of the forestand attacking human beingsand breaking their houses.Being wild they also killedthe human beings.

The king became tensed. What could be the reason forthis? While ruling thekingdom for so many yearssince his adolescence, suchSimran Thakur

Page 31: uoacj 2014 ikBd eap cqysfVu - nbtindia.gov.in · The Noodle Company Rashi Dewan 16 cjxn dh Mkfy;k¡ gh--- lqdqekj nÙkk 17 fp=kdkj dh prqjkbZ vfHkukl nkl 18 Quarrel of the Colours

an incident had never happened when thewild animals devastated life andvaluables like this. Then why is thisdeviation now. To know the reason theking immediately called on his nobels, ministers and the courtiers for aconference.

All the ministers, nobles andcourtiers participated in the meeting andpresented their opinions. Someonesuggested constructing a boundaryaround the forest, another one suggestedto kill the wild animals while someoneelse opined to burn the forest. The kingfelt neither of the suggestions oropinions to be justified. The matter wastoo serious.

Moreover he felt that the animals inforest are also a part of his kingdom. They are also his subjects. How can ademonstrative king be the cause ofdestruction of his subjects? The kingannounced that he himself willinvestigate the matter manifestly andwill shortly find a solution of thisproblem. The conference ended afterthis.

On the other hand the animals in theforest gathered for a meeting. Lion, theking of the forest seemed very worried.Uncle tiger suggested that lion being theking of the animal kingdom should putforth their problems in a meeting withking Uday Bikram Pratap Dev. Everybodyclapped. Uncle tiger, brother bear, uncleelephant, uncle python, sister dear agreed

to accompany king lion. It was decidedthat next day morning they would starttheir journey.

Suddenly, the clever crow flew insaying 'kaw kaw'. He said, "Oh brothersand sisters, have you all gone mad? Whyare you all going to meet the king? Now,the way humans have turned into ourenemy they would kill us as soon as theyget our sight with deadly weapons.Hence, it would not be wise that lion, tiger, elephant, dear, or python go tomeet the king. Now this impenetrablepart of the forest is the safest place forus". Dear asked, "Then would we extinctdue to the continuous attack of humanbeings?"

"Oh, no, no... that is not the matter.Much before your meeting I havethought of a solution for this problem. The king of this kingdom is trying to findout a solution but has not found anysolution," crow said.

Squirrel asked, "What is the way outthen?" "Yes, there is a way, listen, afterinvestigating I came to know that, ourprincess love animals very much. She haskept a talking parrot as a pet. Everymorning and evening the princess spendstime talking with the parrot on the roofof the palace. Let the golden oriole takethis onerous responsibility. Cuckoosister will teach her singing. Then she'llsing songs at the palace. Listening to hermusic the princess would like to keepher in the palace. Yellow bird would

surrender. Then finding appropriate timeshe will describe the plight of the animalsin the forest to the parrot and the parrotwill say everything to the princess.Princess will help the king finding asolution to our plights. Okay, then ourproblems will be over." The crow saidthis to everybody.

As per the plan all the animals andbirds collectively started teaching musicto the golden oriole. On the right timethe golden oriole sang on the palace roofand submitted itself on the hands of theprincess. Then finding opportunitydescribed everything to the parrot.

The parrot passed the same to theprincess. The princess immediately toldthis to the king. Listening to everythingthe king became happy. However in themeantime he had also investigated thematter and had came to know that humanbeings are cutting forests for their vestedinterest. As a result the animals residingthere are not getting food and areventuring into the human habitat.

Besides deforestation, they are alsokilling innocent feral animals for theirskin, horn, teeth etc. Hence the animalsin order to protect themselves areatttacking human beings. Human beingsare also bringing the river water undertheir control. So the thirsty wild animals

come up to the nearby villages in searchof water.

Knowing this the king called on ameeting. He announced that no subjectcan go for hunting in the forest. Cuttingof trees in the forest cannot be donewithout his permission. No one shouldtrouble the wild animals. Their naturalhabitat, food, water will not be destroyed.Whoever will disobey this order will bepunished severely and the subjects whowill work for the protection of flora andfauna will be rewarded.

Now, the subjects understood theirfault. They realised that the animals alsohave equal rights to survive on this earthlike us. Hence forth they loved the wildanimals and protected them. Receivinglove and protection from the humanbeings the annoyed wild animals changedcompletely. They never again attackedanyone nor did they devastated anyhuman life or valuables.

Normalcy was restored inPratapgarh after this. The flora and faunaincreased in the kingdom receivingample rainfall. The subjects resorted toagriculture, trade and commerce andlived happily.
