Institut Polytechnique LaSalle Beauvais is a top ranking higher education

institution founded in 1854. The institution has over 1,500 French and inter-

national students on campus.

Our Masters degree level programmes in Earth, Life and Environmental Sciences

have been awarded the EUR-ACE label.

LaSalle Beauvais is a member of the leading worldwide LaSalle network of

72 universities which includes some 1,500 institutes located in 82 countries.

LaSalle Beauvais pursues a policy of scientific excellence throughout the institution in three key applied research areas:

Agro-resources

Research in this area concerns the

diversification of agricultural production

and usage, and adaptation of practices

and production systems. The focus is

on renewable biomass energy.

LaSalle Beauvais is a founding member

of the worldwide “Industries and Agro-

Resources” competitiveness cluster,

formed to develop non-food application

programmes for agricultural production

with the active involvement of members

from several of the Institute’s research

facilities. The scientific goal of the

PICAR-T research team is to develop

a collaborative interdisciplinary approach

to drive innovation in the farming, food,

agro-resources and rural areas sectors.

Food and health

Research in this area concerns the

improvement of human and animal

nutrition, preservation of health and

understanding of consumer behaviour.

LaSalle Beauvais is either actively involved

or plays a leading role in several French

and European research programmes in

this field. The goal of the EGEAL research

team is to ascertain the potential health

risks to foetuses and infants represented

by contaminants resulting from heat

treatment of the food matrix.

Geosciences

Research in this area has a dual focus:

to gain a deeper understanding of the

history of the Earth, particularly in relation

to the distribution and extraction of

geological resources – materials, minerals,

hydrocarbons, and also water – essential

to the socio-economic development of

the world’s population; and to envisage

the implementation of future-focused

procedures and methods for protecting

and managing the environment, soil

and subsoil, with particular focus on

techniques for assessing and monitoring

natural and industrial risks, as well as

prevention and rehabilitation aspects.

The HYDRISE research team addresses

the problems of trace metal transfer

to surface environments and potential

solutions for hydrosystems subjected

to anthropogenic pressures.

Applied Research in Earth, Life and Environmental Sciences

LaSalle Beauvais receives full support from local government and enjoys the benefit of strong partnerships with French National Research Centers or Universities such as UTC, UPJV, INERIS, INSERM, INRA, Institut Pasteur in Lille, IFREMER and BRGM…

Strong ties with the business community

Our syllabuses all include between 10 and 15 months

spent in internships, many of which abroad. Tutorials and case

studies supervised by academic staff and industry professionals

supplement the fieldwork experience.

Our links with the business community offer key advantages.

We can adapt our programmes to socio-economic demands

and change. Our students are given a clearer idea of their career

options and can be more easily productive in their first job.

Today LaSalle Beauvais has direct links with over 1,000

organisations and companies. And the fact that they continue

to call on us can be attributed to the excellent calibre of our

students, and our high teaching and research standards.

The Alumni Association (AIAE) is very active and follows

the progress and careers of its 5,600 members, 4,500 of whom

are in employment today. Through its Employment and Careers

Service, AIAE advertises about 3,500 annual job vacancies

(sent by the graduates themselves, recruitment consultants or

company HR departments, etc.) and provides Alumni with

career guidance and advice.

AIAE works in partnership with the Institution to support

undergraduates and graduates throughout their degree course,

underlining the importance of career networking, discussing

opportunities, and facilitating meetings between students and

Alumni.

LaSalle Beauvais’ originality lies in its ability to develop professional skills through internships and conventional teaching as well as through the personal commitment of its students to the local community and the world at large. Our Alumni are also managers, recognized for their all-round excellence, and their leadership and team-building qualities.

“ I much appreciated the close

interaction between lecturers

and students and the high

standard of teaching. The outside

lecturers who came to teach

certain classes are proof of the

school’s professional approach.

The most difficult thing for me

was getting used to the pace and

the numerous different subjects.

I really enjoyed the field

internships as they force us to put

our theoretical knowledge into

practice. The atmosphere on

campus is lively and sporty. ”

bASSem KhARRAt eSiAm, in LebAnon 4-month study period

“I really enjoyed student life

on this campus. It’s far better than

in other schools and universities

I’ve been to.

But what I appreciated most

of all was the welcome I received

from the “LaSallians”, who were

always by our side. We are now

graduated students and can’t wait

to begin our careers.”

Agriculture Food and Health Geology

Programme focus

How do we produce enough means of subsistence for the world’s population in the face of global demographic growth? What means of production, crop and livestock varieties, uses of natural resources, biotechnologies, biofuels and services are available to us? These major challenges call for innovative responses and solutions.

Training of experts at the intersection of medicine, agriculture, food and pharmacy. Graduates havea good grasp of the latest major public health issues relating to the links between food and the health of Humans and livestock.

Training of experts in both geology (mineralogy, mines and quarries, volcanology, etc.) and environmental protection (management of energy resources, natural risks, pollutionand pollution control, etc.). Graduates have the task of seeking out sources of drinking water, hydrocarbons and mineral resources, and handling waste management.

Specific programmes taught in EnglishSpring semester (early February to mid-may)

Since 2010, a full semester of classes taught in English

has been on offer for international students.

This programme is based on our food and health syllabus

and is regularly supplemented with lectures and classes in

culinary sciences, administration and management sciences

as well as agro-industrial organization to cover the entire range

of food sector disciplines.

Our modular courses enable all international students to

earn ECTS credits or equivalent US credits.

During this semester, weekly French language training

classes can provide students further credits.

Short-term programmes (early may to late August)

Following a request from our partners, for several years now,

we have organised short programmes lasting 1 to 3 weeks

on topics related directly to our training programmes

and research areas or to the economic and cultural heritage

of Picardy, our home region.

Students live on campus and are accompanied by French guides

during all visits and conferences which are given in English.

The themes of some of the programmes organised in

the past were:

- logistics in the food industry

- use and industrial application of agro-resources within

the competitiveness cluster and transfer of innovations

to field situations

- French gastronomy and health benefits

- landscape as part of historical heritage, land management

and planning

- French parks and gardens

- promotion of maritime heritage and preservation of

the coastal environment

- study of ground in geology

“ This trip helped me to develop

solid skills in finance and

business and prepared me for the

world of work. Outside lecturers

shared their experience with us

and this gave us a more realistic

idea than the formal lectures.

Group work helps

to develop team spirit just like

in a company situation, and this

produces efficient and capable

business people.”

AKie SmytheFAmU, USA4 months – spring semester in nutritional sciences

“ Personally LaSalle Bauvais has

opened up my perspective of

France altogether. Regarding

student life I was able to appreciate

a smaller, more interpersonal

campus being that I come from a

relatively large university in the

USA. The language barrier was

quite difficult upon arrival. I do wish

I had courses and time to learn,

but the students played a big part

in my French matri cu lation and

now I feel comfortable holding

conver sations. The courses were

very interesting; some were great

and some so so. I certainly enjoyed

all of the campus events! This

institution is full of student activities

and opportunities; it’s a very

convenient and comfortable

atmosphere.

All in all, LaSalle Beauvais has

contributed to my overall academic

and professional matriculation

as it pertains to international

agriculture and the food industry.

I would certainly recommend this

institution to any student who

desires to study nutritional sciences

abroad.”

Ever thought of changing the world?

8

Page 9: Unlock your full potential - Beauvais · the problems of trace metal transfer to surface environments and potential solutions for hydrosystems subjected to anthropogenic pressures

A global outlook

The profits from student events (Nuit de l’Institut, Ovalies

Tournament, Georaid, etc.) are donated to a different charity

every year (e.g. LaSalle school in India, Médecins sans

Frontières, Cœur Monde, etc.).

Students can attend English classes as well as language

classes in Spanish, German, Portuguese and French

(for international students). All our undergraduate students

undertake an internship in an English-speaking country.

They can also take a sabbatical year mid-way through

their curriculum in order to do humanitarian work or

to pursue professional or personal growth opportunities.

Then, our graduate students, upon selection, may study

in a partner university abroad in their area of specialization.

This can be either a semester, a study period with a final

qualification or a dual diploma.

Student and academic staff mobility is facilitated by our

Erasmus network (some 30 European partner universities)

as well as by some 30 agreements with universities

on all five continents. In this aspect, the fact that we have

Paris-Beauvais airport on our doorstep (just 5 minutes

from campus) puts us at a real advantage.

LaSalle Beauvais is also involved in international cooperation

programmes such as EU-US, EU-Canada Projects and

BRAFITEC, among others.

International cooperation is based on themed networks

such as the Europe-wide ICA http://www.ica-ls.com/

or the local “Study in Picardy” network (about

32,000 students) http://www.studyinpicardy.fr/

and enjoys financial support from the Departmental

Council of Oise, Regional Council of Picardy, French

government and Europe.

LaSalle Beauvais students are involved in numerous humanitarian projects, in particular through the distribution of funds raised by their many different efforts and events.

LaSalle Beauvais has a lively campus for students.

Accommodation, catering and sports facilities on the campus

certified!

LaSalle Beauvais was recently awarded ISO 9001

certification for all its student training and research

activit ies, suppor t and guidance services and

accommodation, as well as for its extracurricular activities.

We are particularly proud of this achievement as it is

testimony to the overall quality of our offering.

Our ISO 14001-certified farm, EcoCampus scheme and

“Responsible campuses” network membership provide

evidence of the environmental efforts of all LaSalle Beauvais

stakeholders.

The campus is central to the learning experience of each

and every one of our students. The group-focused teaching

methods used help students to develop collective thinking

and to grow as individuals. Every international student is

mentored by a French buddy student, via the student

association “Com’ Internationale”, who introduces them

to the campus and student activities to ensure full immersion

in French culture and life.

The classrooms, lecture theatres, labs, documentation library,

computer rooms, experimentation plots and sports facilities

are all located on the 10-hectare campus near residences

and dining halls, which is adjacent to a 30-hectare wood and

a 200-hectare experimental farm.

Over fifty clubs and societies offer a wide range of activities

including music, theatre, wine-tasting and photography,

plus sports such as handball, volleyball, basketball,

rugby, football, squash, badminton, tennis, gym, cycling

(bikes available) and horse riding, etc.

In addition to this offering, the academic year is punctuated

by events, with some gathering up to 3,000 people such

as the Nuit de l’Institut (LaSalle Beauvais’ gala ball),

the Ovalies Tournament (a major European university

rugby tournament sponsoring humanitarian causes), Junior

Enterprise conferences and the graduation ceremony.

LaSalle Beauvais is renowned for its open and welcoming

culture and attracts a broad mix of students from diverse

backgrounds. The Institution has made the necessary

adjustments to be able to welcome disabled students

through the Total Handicap project.

“Life on campus is pleasant,

the town of Beauvais has plenty

to offer and you can make the

most of Paris easily by train.

The teaching methods are very

different from those in Brazil.

My experience of human and

business management allowed

me to go beyond a strictly

technical agronomic approach

and helped prepare me for

the job market. The cultural

exchanges and knowledge learnt

here make it worthwhile travelling

so far away from my family and
