GAME 30: OKLAHOMA VS. IOWA STATE

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES u After reaching the 2016 Final Four, Oklahoma’s 2016-17 squad was in rebuilding mode after losing a trio of senior starters that included National Player of the Year Buddy Hield. The ‘16-17 squad finished 11-20, but showed glimpses of special talent among the young team comprised mostly of underclassmen. With an extra year of experience and the addition of impact freshmen Brady Manek and Trae Young, the Sooners have put together an impressive turnaround in 2017-18. OU has already surpassed its win total from last season and was the fastest team to match its previous year’s win total (minimum of 11 wins) since Indiana started the 2011-12 season 12-0 after going 12-20 the year before.

OH, TO BE YOUNG... u Oklahoma’s offensive efforts have been led by the scoring and passing of freshman guard Trae Young. In 29 games, the Norman native has put together 12 double-doubles, 23 20-plus-point games, nine 30-plus-point games and four 40-plus-point games. Young is averaging 28.0 points, 9.0 assists, 3.9 rebounds and 1.7 steals while shooting .429 from the field and .367 from 3-point range. He leads the nation in scoring and averages over 10 points more than any other Big 12 player (Kansas’ Devonte’ Graham is second with 17.7). Young’s 9.0 assists also lead the country. No player in recorded NCAA history has finished a season leading the country in both scoring and assists. Since the NCAA began recording assists as an official statistic in 1983, Young is the first major-conference player to total 800 points and 250 assists in one season.u Young already owns the Oklahoma freshman records for points (811), assists (261), 3-pointers (109) and made foul shots (222). u Young’s collegiate career only consists of 29 games, but he has reached 40 points on four occasions, most recently scoring 44 against Baylor on Jan. 30. Young produced a career-high 48 points against Oklahoma State on Jan. 20. Young’s 48 points are tied for the most ever by a Big 12 player (Iowa State’s Melvin Ejim also scored 48 in 2014) and is the second-highest-scoring game by a Division-I player this season. His 48 points are the fifth-most in Oklahoma program history and the second-most by an OU freshman. Young also scored 43 points on Nov. 26 against Oregon and again on Jan. 13 versus TCU. He is the 15th Sooner to score 40 points in a game, but just the second to do so as a freshman. Wayman Tisdale is the only Sooner freshman to score more in a game (51) in the 1982-83 season. Young is also the fourth player in program history to score 40 points in a game multiple times, joining Tisdale (five), Stacey King (two), and Jeff Webster (two).u Young isn’t just breaking school records, he’s also tied one of the most impressive single-game records in college hoops history. By dishing out 22 assists against Northwestern State on Dec. 19, he tied the NCAA record for most assists in a game (assists became official in 1983-84) while breaking both Oklahoma and Big 12 records (both were 18 assists). Young is the fourth player in recorded college basketball history to register 22 assists and the first since Sherman Douglas of Syracuse in 1989. Since the NCAA began recording assists in 1983, Young is the only freshman to dish out 20 or more assists in a game. Oklahoma’s single-game assist record was previously held by Michael Johnson (1997) and Jan Pannell (1983). Johnson was tied with Oklahoma State’s Doug Gotlieb (1998) for the previous Big 12 record.

u Oklahoma’s freshman season scoring record is owned by Tisdale, who averaged 24.5 points per game in his rookie season. Tisdale’s freshman year was so memorable (he also averaged 10.3 rebounds and 2.5 blocks), that the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) named its national freshman of the year award after him in 2010. Tisdale also owns the overall Oklahoma single-season scoring record, averaging 27.0 points in 1983-84.u From Dec. 16 to Jan. 3, Young assembled a double-double in five straight games - the ninth-longest double-double streak in program history. Young scored at least 25 points in all five games and is the first college player in at least 20 years to record five straight games of 25 points and 10 assists. Young has recorded 25 points and 10 assists in seven of his 15 games this season - the most in a college CAREER in the past 20 years. The only other college player to reach seven such games in the past two decades is J.J. Barea of Northeastern (2002-06) with seven in 113 career games.

GOING LOCAL u Oklahoma has seen strong production from a pair of freshmen already known around the Norman area. Guard Trae Young (Norman) and forward Brady Manek (Harrah) are both local products with numerous high school accolades now in their first season as Sooners. The pair is combining to average 38.4 points per game – the most by any freshman duo in the country.u Attending high school less than three miles from the University of Oklahoma campus, Young is the first starter at OU to list Norman as his hometown since Steve Ayers in the 1967-68 season. Young has been named to numerous preseason honors lists - including the Preseason Top 50 for the John R. Wooden Award and the 20-person watch list for the 2018 Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award. Young is also a Preseason All-Big 12 honorable mention selection. u Named a five-star recruit according to 247Sports, ESPN, Rivals and Scout, Young was named the second-best point guard in his national recruiting class by ESPN and third-best by 247Sports and Scout. Playing high school ball at Norman North HS, Young averaged 42.6 points, 4.1 assists and 5.8 rebounds during his senior year while shooting 48.9 percent from the field. He earned McDonald’s All-America honors, becoming the fourth McDonald’s All-American from Oklahoma to play for OU, joining Sooner legends Blake Griffin, Wayman Tisdale and Jeff Webster.u Through 15 weeks, Young has earned Big 12 Player of the Week honors six times - tied with Blake Griffin (also of Oklahoma) for the most in a single season. Young has been named the Big 12 Player of the Week on Nov. 13, Nov. 27, Dec. 18, Dec. 27, Jan. 1 and Jan. 15. He has also earned Big 12 Newcomer of the Week on Nov. 20 and Dec. 4. u Manek has also found success in his rookie campaign, earning averages of 10.4 points and 5.2 rebounds while shooting .473 from the field and .387 from 3-point range.u A four-star recruit according to 247Sports, ESPN and Scout and a three-star recruit by Rivals, Manek joined the Sooners from Harrah HS, a 35 mile drive from Norman. Manek averaged a double-double in his senior high school season with 24.3 points, 11.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists while shooting 47.1 percent from the field.

CONSISTENT KRUGER u Lon Kruger has made his mark on the college basketball world as a master rebuilder. Throughout his career, he has inherited struggling programs and taken them as far as the Final Four in a short number of a years. While Kruger’s turnarounds have traditionally occurred at new schools, the seventh-year head coach at Oklahoma now looks to continue his rebuilding success with his own program in Norman.u Kruger’s success at Oklahoma has been evident throughout the country, taking a Sooners team that went 27-36 (.429) in the two seasons prior to his arrival to reaching the Final Four just five years into the job. Since 2011, Kruger has racked up four NCAA Tournament appearances, coached three NBA Draft picks and a national player of the year (Buddy Hield) and was named the 2014 AP Big 12 Coach of the Year. u Although a young Oklahoma team finished the 2016-17 season with an 11-20 record and missed the NCAA Tournament for the first time in five years, Kruger carries a track record of bouncing back throughout his career. Since 1986 (his first season as head coach at Kansas State), Kruger has never missed the postseason in consecutive seasons. Of the past six instances that Kruger failed to reach the postseason, five of his teams qualified for the NCAA Tournament the next year.

u Kruger’s OU teams have surpassed their win total from each subsequent season in five of the last six years. u Oklahoma was voted sixth in the Big 12 Conference’s 2017-18 preseason poll. The Sooners have finished as well or better in the conference standings than predicted in four of the six seasons under Kruger. u Last season, Kruger became the 33rd head coach to win 600 NCAA Division I games. With 618 career wins, Kruger ranks ninth in victories among active Division I coaches and 32nd in all-time Division I wins.

GAME 30: OKLAHOMA VS. IOWA STATE

LATTIN’S BUILDING BLOCKS u Senior forward Khadeem Lattin has proven himself as one of the top shot blockers in Oklahoma program history. In 127 career games for the Sooners, Lattin is tied for first in the OU record book in career blocks with 230 and is one away from owning the record outright. The senior led the Big 12 in blocked shots per game during conference play the past two seasons (had 2.4 per game in 2016-17).u The only remaining starter from Oklahoma’s 2016 Final Four team, Lattin is fourth in the Big 12 with 1.9 blocks per game.

BACKCOURT WORTH WATCHING u Oklahoma guards Kameron McGusty and Trae Young were voted by the Big 12 Conference’s head coaches as Preseason All-Big 12 Team honorable mention selections. The Sooners were one of only two Big 12 teams with two guards on the conference’s preseason honors list. The Sooners also hope to see junior Christian James continue his solid start in the early season. The guard trio of James, McGusty and Young are combining to average 48.1 points per game.u Coming off a summer that included shooting 12-of-13 (.923) from 3-point range during the team’s trip to New Zealand and Australia, James is averaging 12.8 points through four games. James is working toward a bounce-back campaign after ending the 2016-17 season in a shooting slump. As a sophomore, James began the season averaging 11.3 points in his first 15 games, before scoring just 4.6 points per contest in the last 16 games. He has bounced back from the sophomore slump thus far in his junior year, averaging 12.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.1 steals while shooting .381 from 3-point range and .472 from the field.

THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME u Oklahoma has gone 73-16 (.820) at Lloyd Noble Center over the past six season. Overall, the Sooners are 85-21 (.802) at the LNC in the Kruger era. u The Sooners have won 453 of their last 528 encounters at Lloyd Noble Center, good for a remarkable .860 winning percentage. Included in the stretch was a school-record 51-game winning streak (ended in 1990-91). The Sooners also recorded a Big 12 Conference-record 37-game home court winning streak (ended in 2003). u OU is 16-11 at home against AP Top 25 opponents in the Kruger era and has won 15 of the last 22 such contests. u Oklahoma has won 132 of its last 139 non-conference games at LNC, including 66 of its last 70. The Sooners are 40-4 in Norman against non-conference opponents under Kruger. u Overall, the Sooners own a 548-102 (.845) record in the LNC since the building opened in 1975.

DOMINANCE DOWN UNDER u Oklahoma’s 2017-18 season started earlier – and much farther south – than normal as the Sooners headed to New Zealand and Australia for a foreign exhibition tour in August. The Sooners went 4-0 during their time Down Under, scoring 119.0 points per game and winning by an average margin of 40.0 points. The Sooners were led in scoring by Trae Young with 22.3 points per contest in 21.8 minutes.u The Sooners collectively shot 50-of-117 (.427) from 3-point range, sinking an average of 12.5 treys a game. One of the keys to OU’s 3-point barrage Down Under was guard Christian James. The junior was near unstoppable from behind the arc, shooting 12-of-13 (.923) during the trip and 10-for-10 in the final three games.

THEM BOYS UP TO SOMETHING... u Jordan Brand continues to expand both on the court and on the field. On Nov. 9, 2017, the brand welcomed the University of Oklahoma to the family, making it just the fifth collegiate basketball program and third football program to represent the Jumpman. The Sooners’ uniforms will begin to feature the Jumpman logo at the start of the 2018-19 season. The partnership will include the football team and the men’s and women’s basketball teams. Oklahoma will join Georgetown, Florida, Marquette, Michigan and North Carolina as the only schools to wear the Jumpman on its men’s basketball uniforms.

GRIFFIN GIVES BACK u The University of Oklahoma’s athletics performance center at Lloyd Noble Center, which is expected to be completed in early 2018, will be named after former OU basketball player Blake Griffin in recognition of his financial gift, the largest ever to OU by a former Sooner basketball player. The Griffin Family Performance Center will be an 18,400-gross-square foot training center located just south of the men’s and women’s basketball’s two existing practice gyms. The performance center will help enhance strength training facilities for both men’s and women’s programs, as well other Sooner student-athletes. Griffin was the 2009 consensus national player of the year and the No. 1 overall pick in that year’s NBA Draft.

The Associated Press announced its All-Time Top 100 last spring, a ranking system to determine the top programs in men’s college basketball since the AP poll began in 1949. Oklahoma ranked 20th in the All-Time Top 100 – the second highest of any team in the Big 12.

To determine the all-time Top 100, the AP formula counted poll appearances (one point each) to mark consistency and No. 1 rankings (two points each) to acknowledge elite programs. The AP doesn’t release a poll after the NCAA Tournament, so eventual national champions are not factored into these rankings.

Below are numbers breaking down Oklahoma’s history in the AP poll and the Sooners’ place in the All-time Top 100.

u Oklahoma ranks second among Big 12 schools in the All-Time Top 100. Kansas (No. 5) is the only school in the conference ahead of the Sooners.

u Oklahoma’s football program ranks second in the AP Football All-Time Top 100. OU is the only Big 12 school to finish in the top 20 of the All-Time Top 100 in both football and men’s basketball.

u Since the mid-80s, the Sooners have appeared in a majority of all AP polls. Oklahoma has been voted a top-25 team in 55 percent of AP polls since the start of the 1984 season.

u The Sooners have gone nine seasons of being ranked in every AP poll of that season - most recently 2015-16 when Lon Kruger’s squad was in the top 10 of every week’s poll.

u Oklahoma has been ranked No. 1 in the country for a total of eight weeks, most recently claiming the top spot for three straight weeks in 2015-16. All eight No. 1 appearances have come since 1988.

u The Sooners have been ranked in 52 of the last 82 AP polls (63.4 percent), all under head coach Lon Kruger.

    u Oklahoma has reached the Final Four on five occasions - 1939, 1947, 1988, 2002 and 2016.

u OU has seen two players earn National Player of the Year honors in the past 10 years (the most of any school in that span) - Blake Griffin (2008-09) and Buddy Hield (2015-16).
