1. Introduction

The University of Nairobi has responded to national, regional and Africa’s high level manpower training needs by developing and evolving, diversified academic programmes and specializations in sciences, applied sciences, technology, humanities, social sciences and the arts. Through self-sponsored programmes, invaluable opportunity has been opened to thousands of Kenyans and non-Kenyans, who meet University admission requirements. The location of the University in the capital city and its environs is an advantage that has seen the university increasingly become a busy hub and citadel of academic activity at all times. In addition to the regular, evening and weekend programmes, classes are conducted at the university’s campuses in Mombasa and Kisumu and also in the ODel Learning Centers located in the following locations: Garissa, Kakamega, Nakuru, Embu, Meru, Kapenguria, Kisii, Thika, Lokichogio, Lamu and Nyeri.

This booklet contains information about the entry requirements into the various undergraduate degree programmes, diploma, certificate and foundation courses offered at the University of Nairobi, the mode of study, fees payable and various contacts for further enquiries. Please note that the entry requirements conform to the Commission for University Education guidelines.

1. Online Application Procedure

Step 1: Visit the application website http://application.uonbi.ac.ke

Step 2: Registration and Creation of User Account

To register, you need an email address and phone number that will be validated during registration. Every applicant must create their own personal user account.

Step 3: Profile Management

Key-in your personal details and upload scanned copies of academic certificates and a passport size photograph. Only when your profile is complete can you apply for the programme you wish to undertake.

Step 4: Programme Selection

Select and apply for the course you are interested in. You will be issued with a REFERENCE NUMBER and directed to pay the prescribed application fee through the following Available Payment options:

i. Credit/Debit Card

ii. M-Pesa Pay Bill

iii. Direct Cash Deposit at any Kenya Commercial Bank(KCB) branch

Upon payment, you will receive a confirmation of the payment on the email address and phone number registered in step 2.

Step 5: Application Tracking

Track the status of your application online through the system. Alerts will be sent to your registered email address and phone number.

3. Proficiency in English

Applicants from non-English speaking countries will be required to produce a certificate of proficiency in English such as Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

4. Distance Education

The University of Nairobi has embarked on ‘Distance Learning’ mode of delivery intended to favour those students who may not be available to take courses either on full time or part time (evenings and weekends) basis. Currently, the following courses are being offered by distance learning mode: Bachelor of Education (Arts), Bachelor of Education (Science), Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Science (Nursing) (Up grading).

5. New Programmes

The University of Nairobi has continuously endeavored to provide quality programmes that are market oriented and driven. The University recently launched the following new programmes:-

• Bachelor of Science in Finance

• Bachelor of Science in Accounting

• Bachelor of Science in Procurement and Supply Chain Management

• Bachelor of Interior Design

• Diploma in Renal Nursing

• Bachelor of Information Science

General Admissions Criteria

i) Certificate Courses

Admission to certificate courses will be based on any of the following minimum qualifications:

• KCSE mean grade of C- or equivalent.

• ‘O’ level qualification or mean grade of Division III or equivalent.

• ‘A’ Level qualification with a minimum of two subsidiary passes or equivalent.

NB: The certificates should have been undertaken for a period of at least one semester

ii) Diploma Courses

Admission to diploma courses will be based on any of the following minimum qualifications:

• KCSE mean grade C.

• KCSE mean grade C- or equivalent plus a Certificate (Certificates must be from institutions recognized by the University of Nairobi Senate)

• ‘O’ level qualification with a minimum Division III or equivalent.

• ‘A’ level qualification with a minimum of two subsidiary passes or equivalent.

iii) Degree Programmes

Admission to Bachelor’s degree programmes will be based on any one of the following minimum qualifications:

• KCSE mean grade C+

• KCSE mean grade C plain and a Diploma

• KCSE mean grade C- plus a Certificate and Diploma

• ‘O’ Level Division II or equivalent plus a Diploma

• ‘O’ Level Division III or equivalent plus a Certificate and Diploma

• ‘O’ Level Division III or equivalent, plus a three-year Diploma from a post-secondary institution

• Diploma and an aggregate of C in KCSE

• ‘A’ Level with two principal passes or equivalent in relevant subjects. Only applicants whose results are available at the time of application will be considered.

• CPAII/CPSII/CIPS or equivalent for Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Arts, and with minimum KCSE mean grade C or ‘O’ level Division III

• P1 from a two-year post-secondary training institution for entry into Bachelor of Education with minimum KCSE mean Grade C or ‘O’ Level Division III.

• Higher National Diploma in relevant fields and should have attained KCSE mean grade C

• A degree from a recognized university

Kindly note that certificates, diplomas or equivalent qualifications listed above should be from institutions recognized by the University of Nairobi Senate.

iv) Foundation Courses

The University offers foundation courses in Sciences and Arts.

Applicants who have C- may be admitted to the Foundation Course as a prerequisite for university admission.

1. KCSE mean grade C+ with C+ passes in the following cluster subjects: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology or any subjects from Group III, IV and V.

2. Advanced Level Certificate: Two principal passes in Mathematics and Physics with a subsidiary pass in Chemistry. For B.Sc. in Geospatial Engineering, a subsidiary pass in Geography is acceptable in lieu of Chemistry.

3. Higher National Diploma /Ordinary Diploma from a recognized institution with passes in relevant subjects.

4. Technical/Science Diploma from a recognized institution with credit passes in Mathematics and Chemistry from a recognized institution.

5. B.Sc. or B.Ed (Science) from a recognized institution; or other appropriate technical qualification at degree level.

Minimum Admission Requirements:

1. KCSE mean grade C+ with a minimum of C+ in mathematics, English or Kiswahili , Biology or Physics or Chemistry and Any subject from Group III (History, Geo or CRE, Islamic or Hindu), or Group IV (Home Sc., Art & Design, Agriculture, Computer Tech., Aviation Technology) or Group V (French, German, Arabic, Music, Business Studies, Computer Studies).

2. Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education (KACE) or equivalent: holders of 2 Principal passes, one in Art, if Art is not one of the two principal passes, candidates must have obtained credit pass at KCSE or equivalent examination in Art.

3. KCSE C plain with a diploma from Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) in Art, Design, Computer Aided Design or Design related Digital Technology or equivalent, with a credit pass or equivalent examination in Art.

4. Degree from a recognized university and any other relevant field of Social Sciences and Engineering.

1. KCSE mean grade C+ with a minimum of C+ in Mathematics, English or Kiswahili, Biology or Physics or Chemistry and any subject from Cluster III (Hist., Geo or CRE Islamic or Hindu) or Group IV (Home Sc., Art & Design, Woodwork, Metalwork, Building and Construction, Drawing and Design, Agriculture) or Cluster IV, (History and Government, Geography, CRE, Social Education and Ethics, French, German, Arabic, Music).

2. K.C.S.E. mean grade C- or equivalent plus a Certificate and Diploma in a relevant discipline from a recognized institution.

3. O-Level Division III or equivalent plus a Certificate and Diploma in a relevant discipline from a recognized institution.

4. KCSE C plain with a Diploma from Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) in Art, Design, Computer Aided Design or Design related Digital Technology or equivalent, with a credit pass or equivalent examination in Art.

• B. Real Estate/ B.A. Planning: C+ in each of the following four subject clusters: English or Kiswahili, Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry or Biology or Account or Business Studies; Geography or Agriculture or History or Building Construction or Drawing and Design or woodwork.

• B.A. Quantity Surveying/B. Construction: C+ in the following cluster subjects: English/Kiswahili, Mathematics, Physics, Geography or Accounts, Commerce or Business Studies, Economics or Building Construction or Drawing or Art and Design.

2. KACE (A LEVEL) Applicants or Equivalent: Two Principal Passes with a minimum principal ‘D’ pass in either Mathematics or Physics and in any one of the following subjects: Economics, Geography and Chemistry and a credit pass in the English at KCE level or equivalent.

3. Diploma Holders: a minimum KCE Division II or mean grade C in KCSE in addition to a credit pass or equivalent of the KNEC Diploma or its equivalent in: Building Construction, Architectural Studies, Civil Engineering and Applied Sciences.

4. Degree Holder: A holder of a University degree or its equivalent from a recognized university in the following areas: Architecture, Engineering, Design, Economics, Commerce, Land Economics, Planning or any other relevant equivalent..

Minimum Admission Requirements for Diploma in Estate Agency and Property Management

1. KCSE mean grade C or equivalent with minimum C in Mathematics and English/Kiswahili.

2. KCE (Div. II) with credits in Mathematics and English or Div. III plus a Certificate in an equivalent professional training.

3. KACE with at least one principal pass or equivalent.

4. Degree and Diploma holders in the respective areas of study.

5. Any other relevant criteria listed in the General Admissions Criteria.
