Exhibitors from Sangamon, Menard, and Logan counties gather in front of the Orr Building on the Illinois State
Fairgrounds before judging begins at the Illinois State 4-H Show! Our counties had nearly 88 4-Her’s
representing at this show as well as the many 4-Her’s participating in the junior livestock shows!
New things you’ll Experience in 4-H in 2018-2019!
Check out the NEW Pick Your Project Guide. We’ve changed the format to make it easier to find the
projects you want and the resources to help you learn! County offices have the publication, or download it
@ https://4h.extension.illinois.edu/members/projects. In addition to projects, you can see events, contests,
conferences, and leadership opportunities in the areas you’re studying!
o We added a fun new project for you to study—Weather!
o The visual arts projects have now been divided into 13 separate projects. Instead of registering for
“visual arts,” you’ll select the medium you want to study: Chalk/Carbon/Pigment, Clay,
Computer Generated Art, Fiber, Food Decorating, Glass/Plastic, Heritage Arts, Metal, Nature,
Paper, Scrapbooking, 3-Dimensional Mixed Media, and Wood.
o Cloverbuds should select “Cloverbud” as their project. Cloverbud leaders will be able to special
order resources to assist with Cloverbud club meetings and project learning.

4-H Leaders, Club Secretaries and Treasurers: This is a reminder that every 4-H club must
submit their Secretary's Book Printout and Treasurer's Book Printout (if they have a treasury), which includes the
4-H Club Annual Financial Statement, to the Extension Office at the end of the 4-H Year. Please make
arrangements to have this done by September 14. Submitting these book printouts is a state requirement.
Resources can be found at https://web.extension.illinois.edu/lms/sangamon4h/2062.html
30 Days of Doing is a chance for kids across the nation to do things “on purpose.”
Luckily, that’s what 4-H is all about! You’re already on your way to fulfilling the 30 Days!
Check out the cool chart online at 4-h.org/inspire-kids-to-do/ to see the challenge for each
day of September.
Beginning September 1, you could win a $10,000 scholarship for your kid! If you win, so does Illinois 4-H!
Submit a photo that shows how your child inspires themselves or others TO DO WITH PURPOSE for
themselves, their family, their community, their country, or the world.
How will you celebrate National
4-H WEEK?
Illinois will be joining 6 million other 4-H members in celebrating National
4-H Week Oct. 7 -13 using the National 4-H Council theme: Inspire Kids to
Do. Spread the word that 4-H is the place to be inspired by learning by doing!
2018-2019 Online 4-H Enrollment!
The new 4-H Year begins on September 1, and 4Honline will be available on September 15th for re-enrollment
and new enrollments for the 2018-19 year.
4Honline allows families to create a family profile to enroll all members of their family at once. Instead of
repeating information several times on several forms, the information is entered once. For those of you who
already have a 4Honline profile, re-enrollment will be a breeze, with a quick check to make sure all information is
up-to-date, new project selection, and order any manuals needed.
4-H Leaders will be passing out guides at your meetings for directions on using 4HOnline to enroll or re-enroll. If
you do not have access to a computer or would like assistance, please contact 4-H staff if you would like to set an
appointment to enroll at the extension office.

Educator Corner ~Carissa Davis “Recruiting New Families to 4-H”
Youth want to belong to groups that are interesting, fun and friendly. Youth like to be with new and old friends.
They like to make things and do new activities. Before joining 4-H, young people want to know what and why
they should join. What are the benefits? Let’s start by finding out what you like about 4-H.
WHAT TO DO
Activity: What Do We Like about 4-H?
(As the ball is being tossed around in this activity, have someone record reasons the members like 4-H on a large
sheet of paper with a marker.) Everyone stand in a circle. We’re going to toss a ball around. When you catch it,
share what you like about 4-H before tossing it to someone else. Do not repeat any of the reasons for liking 4-H.
Your reasons can be serious or silly.
What Our Friends Who Are Not in 4-H Need to Know About 4-H
Look at the list of things you’ve said about what you like about 4-H. Are there other things that should be added
to the list? Here are some possibilities:
Open to boys and girls
Includes ages 5 to 18
4-H is a U of I Extension program that is a part of the University of Illinois system.
Youth are able to take projects that fit their interests.
Youth can make the decisions in their clubs.
Sometimes, youth and their families don’t know about 4-H. They need your help to learn about the opportunities
in the club and county. Sometimes, they may have wrong ideas about 4-H For example, some people think you
have to live on a farm or in the country to belong to 4-H. Others might think you need to be in a certain grade to
join.
There are a number of brochures to help us tell the 4-H story to potential members and their families. Check with
your local Extension office for copies of brochures.
Activity: Inviting Someone to Join 4-H
(Ask three members who read with energy to read a different approach from below.) Have the youth read the
same approach three times, monotone then if you were board/exhausted and then with enthusiasm/excitement. In
each approach, what was good about how the new person was invited? How could the invitation to join be
improved?
Approach #1: Hi. Tomorrow night is our 4-H meeting. Would you
like to come?
Approach #2: Our 4-H Club is a lot of fun. We need new
members. We need people to help with our community service at
the Humane Society. Want to join?
Approach #3: Our 4-H Club does many fun things like making
food, art activities and camping. We meet the first Thursday of
each month at the local Extension Office. Would you like to join?
I can bring you some information.

Personal Recruitment: Research has shown that the best way to get new members, families and volunteers to join
is to ask them. Just talking to your neighbors, relatives and friends will recruit new 4-H members. We all like
personal invitations! Your 4-H invitations might include: telling them something about 4-H, why you like it, why
you think they might like it, and how to get involved.
More Recruitment Ideas
Others ways to recruit new members and families include:
Use brochures and poster in neighborhood business and libraries
Have “bring a friend” programs for current members.
Mail brochures to prospective families. Put recruitment articles in the newspaper.
Ask if recruitment announcements might be made at school.
Clubs benefit when new people join. It’s great to have others join in the 4-H fun and learning. Everyone should
help recruit new members and families. When they join, we need to help them get better acquainted with 4-H and
out
Making the best in each of us better
GENEROSITY: VALUE AND PRACTICE SERVICE TO OTHERS
Generosity is the habit of giving without expecting anything in return … giving back to the community; helping
family, friends and neighbors; being grateful for what we have; and sharing what we can.
For the concept of generosity to be instilled in youth, they need to practice it. This can be accomplished through
community service projects. However, for youth to truly develop the habit of generosity they need to connect to
their communities and learn how to give back to others. They need to know the “why” for the community service
project. Does your service project meet these goals:
It must be seen as relevant and timely for the 4-H members. They need to see or learn about the needs in
their community and what they can do to help with those needs.
Members need to be a part of the planning and implementation of the project.
The project needs to be necessary and valuable. Members need to feel they made a difference.
Members need to reflect on the project. This allows them to think about what they did, and what it meant
to them, to others and to the community.
Members need to discuss the impact of their community service project and what they learned. Evaluation
gives them direction for improvement, growth and change. It also allows them to think about what else
they might do because of this experience
.
Including these components as part of the process allows 4-H members to gain an understanding of others’ needs
and learn how to respond to those needs, which leads to the development of values such as compassion and
tolerance for diversity. It fosters a sense of pride and ownership for their community. Working alongside 4-H
members and other adults develops teamwork skills.
