GUY V. LEWIS DEVELOPMENT FACILIT Y

In April 2016, both the University of Houston Men’s and Wom-en’s Basketball programs celebrated their bright futures when the Guy V. Lewis Development Center was officially dedicated.

Designed by DLR Group and Page, the Guy V. Lewis Basketball Center is located adjacent to Hofheinz Pavilion at the corner of Cullen Boulevard and Holman Street on the UH campus. Construction on the $25 million facility began in late September and was completed in Fall 2015.

Austin Commercial served as the construction manager.

The 53,000 square-foot facility provides the environment that the Houston Men’s and Women’s Basketball student-athletes need to excel throughout the season in all areas.

The first level houses a dedicated practice court for each team as well as shared sports performance and sports medicine areas, which are shared by both programs.

The second level feature the teams’ areas, which include locker rooms and academic/film theaters. The team rooms contain spacious, modern lockers, multiple video screens for television and comfortable furniture.

The third level hold office space for both Men’s and Women’s Basketball coaching and support staffs.

“I am proud and grateful that our administration recognizes how important this is. UH Chancellor/President Dr. (Renu) Khator and Mack Rhoades have made a commitment to make our program better. When you are playing in a conference with the defending national champion and other tradition-rich programs, we need to have competitive advantages like this facility will provide,” Head Coach Kelvin Sampson said. “Teams become better from October to March. For players to get better, it has to be from March to October. We will have a place where our players can practice, work out, shoot, develop chemistry and improve their work ethics. They can do this, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year with this facility.”

FERTITTA CENTER

The University of Houston Men’s and Women’s Basketball pro-grams will compete in a new game arena during the 2018-19 season when the Fertitta Center officially opens.

With the completion of the 2016-17 season, Hofheinz Pavil-ion – the Cougars’ current home arena – will undergo a $60 million renovation. The renovation was made possible through a generous $20 million donation from University of System Board of Regents Chairman Tilman J. Fertitta and his family in late August 2016.

The facility will feature a premium club area and a courtside club. The reconfigured bowl will move mid-court seating loca-tions closer to game action with floor-level seating opposite the team benches for UH students. Renovations include a new audio system, sports lighting and video boards as well as new concession stands and expanded restrooms. The facility’s exterior also will be refreshed.

Prominent to the center’s exterior, the renovation will preserve the legacy of the Hofheinz family and its contributions to both UH and the city of Houston. UH will transform an area adjacent to

the new facility into Hofheinz Plaza, where fans will be greeted by a bronze statue of former Harris County Judge Roy Hofheinz.

The University of Houston will request that city officials rename a portion of Holman Street in front of the arena after the Hofheinz family. In addition, Roy Hofheinz’s records will be permanently archived and publicly accessible as a special collection in the UH library and the Alumni Center will house an area describing the lives and public service of Roy and Irene Hofheinz.

“This gift is personal. It represents a commitment from my family and me to support the University of Houston in its quest to strengthen our nationally competitive institution both in academics and athletics,” Fertitta said. “Upgrading our athletics facilities shows we are serious about competing at the highest

levels of collegiate sports for many years to come. I’m proud of where the University of Houston is today and I’m proud to make this investment in my university’s future.”

ON THE AIRJeremy Branham begins his second

season behind the microphone as the voice of Houston Men’s Basketball in 2017-18.

Branham is no stranger to Houston Athletics. He served as the radio play-by-play broadcaster for Houston Women’s Basketball for 10 years and and called Houston Baseball games for nine years before joining Men’s Basketball.

In addition, he calls the play-by-play action for Major League Soccer’s Houston Dynamo and serves as the sideline reporter during Houston Football games and hosts Football Head Coach Major Applewhite’s weekly radio show. He will add Men’s Basketball Head Coach Kelvin Sampson’s weekly radio program to that list in 2016-17.

Branham, who is a Humble, Texas, native, has extensive broadcast experience, first working as a fill-in broadcaster for the Houston ISP Sports Network during the 2005-06 Women’s Basketball season.

He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Houston in 2010.

For the eighth straight season, Houston and NBA legend Elvin Hayes will serve as the radio analyst on the men’s basketball broadcasts.

As a Cougar from 1965 to 1968, Hayes es-tablished himself as one of the finest players in college basketball history. The Rayville, La., native led the Cougars to a combined 81-12 record and back-to-back NCAA Final Four appearances in 1967 and 1968.

During his final collegiate season in 1967-68, he was a consensus National Player of the Year selection after averaging 36.8 points and 18.9 rebounds per game. He remains the program’s leading scorer and rebounder, averaging 31.0 points and 17.2 rebounds per game during his career.

Following his Houston days, he was taken with the No. 1 overall pick in the 1968 NBA Draft by the San Diego Rockets. In 16 seasons in the NBA, Hayes averaged 21.0 points and 12.2 rebounds per game. He was named to the All-NBA First or Second Teams six times and was a 12-time NBA All-Star.

In 1996, he was named one of the NBA’s 50 Greatest Players.Hayes was inducted into the Houston Athletics Hall of Honor in 1974

and joined the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1990.
