Last Time Out: Nine straight free throws by its opponent and scoring drought in the fi nal minutes of the game proved to be key in the Cowgirl basketball teams (1-0 overall) six-point loss, 70-64, against the Saint Mary’s Gaels (2-0 overall) on Friday night.

“It was a competitive game all the way throughout the night,” UW head coach Joe Legerski. “I thought we played extremely well in the fi rst 15 minutes of the game and then we needed to maintain it. One of the things coming into the game was Saint Mary’s experience and it really showed. They kept fi ghting back, making plays and down the stretch hit shots. We had opportunities, good looks at the basket and some nights you come up short. The play of Marquelle Dent kept us in the basketball game along with Liv Roberts who played and shot the ball well. You also see the balance the Gaels had with fi ve play-ers in double-digits, which is a big part of what we need to work on.”

Dent fi nished with a season-high 21 points along with six assists in 37 minutes of action. She was 6-of-15 from the fi eld and 8-of-9 from the charity stripe. Freshman Marta Gomez recorded a career-high 18 points while Roberts added a career-high 14 points. Senior Jordan Kelley fi nished the night with double-digits in rebounds with ten. UW shot 21-of-55 (.382) from the fi eld and 16-of-24 (.667) from the charity stripe.

Four starters fi nished the game in double-fi gures for the Gaels led by Sydney Raggio who fi nished her night with 16 points and seven rebounds. Devon Brookshire added 15 points and six boards followed by Shannon Mauldin and Stella Beck with 11 and 10 respectively. Saint Mary’s shot 24-of-54 (.444) from the fi eld and 18-of-24 (.750) from the free throw line.

The Gaels regained a lead out of the halftime break with a basket from Raggio which they would build to four, 38-34. UW battled back to go up one 42-41. A 9-4 run to close out the third by Saint Mary’s made the score 50-46 in its favor. Two straight three-point fi eld goals from Dent and Gomez to begin the fourth quarter pushed the Cowgirls back ahead, 52-50. Free throws made it a four point contest which was quickly tied up at 56 with 5:34 remaining in the game. SMC went up by three, 59-56, but fi ve unanswered by Wyoming made it a three-point contest, 62-59. Started by a Raggio layup, the Gaels scored the fi nal 11 of 13 points including nine free throws to give them a 70-64 win.

Gomez hit three out of the gate for the Cowgirls to get them on the board. SMC scored the next four points to give them a one-point advantage, 4-3. After a couple of empty trips down the court, another three by Gomez gave UW a 6-4 lead. Free throws by each team continued to give the Cowgirls an 8-6 advantage through the fi rst media timeout. Six straight points by Wyoming increased the margin to eight, 14-6. The Gaels outscored UW 5-3 the rest of the quarter but the Cowgirls held a 17-11 lead. Sparked by a three-point play by Dent, an 11-2 run by UW increased the lead to double-digits, 28-13. Saint Mary’s responded with ten unanswered to close the gap to fi ve, 28-23. A jumper from Dent ended a four-minute drought by the Cowgirl unfortunately the Gaels scored the fi nal seven to even it up at 30 headed into the half.

Dent led the way with 11 points and four assists in 17 minutes of action. Gomez had six points and Campbell with fi ve. Kelley recorded a team-high eight rebounds. Wyoming shot 12-of-26 (.462) from the fi eld but just 3-of-7 (429) from the free throw line.

Joe Legerski will be entering his 13th season in 2015-16 as the head women's basketball coach at the University of Wyoming. He was named head coach on May 1, 2003 and became the sixth head coach in Cowgirl history. In his 12th seasaon with the Cowgirls, UW went 16-14 overall and 10-8 in league play for a fi fth place fi nish. His overall record stands at 232-140 while he holds a 114-76 mark in league play. Two Cowgirls earned conference honors as Kayla Woodward and Marquelle Dent were each selected All-Mountain West. Dent also garnered WBCA Honorable Mention All-America and All-Region VII honors. Woodward was named CoSIDA First Team Academic All-District. He recorded his fi rst career coaching victory on Dec. 13, 2003, as Wyoming defeated Montana State Billings, 62-51. His fi rst conference win came on Jan. 17, 2004 against rival BYU. In his fi rst season, he guided the Cowgirls to an 11-18 record overall and a 6-8 mark in the Mountain West including their fi rst ever Mountain West Tournament victory in school history. Two Cowgirls also garnered All-Conference awards as he earned MW Coach of the Year honors in his fi rst year with the program. In 2004-05, he helped the Cowgirls to a 16-12 overall mark, along with a 7-7 record and a fourth place fi nish in the MW. It was the highest they'd fi nished in conference play since 1996-97. They swept BYU for the fi rst time since 1994-95 and earned a 72-67 win over the Colorado Buffaloes which snapped a 13-game losing streak. Three Cowgirls earned All-MW awards including Ashley Elliott who earned First Team All-MW honors for the second year in a row. For the 2005-06 season, the Cowgirls completed the year 21-9 overall, while fi nishing 10-6 overall in the Mountain West Conference. They made an appearance in the WNIT for only the third time in school history. The 21-wins were at the time the most since the 1989-90 season when they went 24-8 and the ten conference victories at the time tied an all-time school record which was set in 1978-79. Three Cowgirls garnered All-Conference honors, including Hanna Zavecz who earned First Team All-MW and Defensive Player of the Year honors along with Megan McGuffey who took home the MW Newcomer of the Year award. During the 2006-07 campaign, it was a magical year for Legerski and the Cowgirls as they won the WNIT Postseason Championship over the Wisconsin Badgers. Wyoming went 6-0 enroute to the cham-pionship. They completed the season with a program best 27-9 record, which eclipsed the 24-8 mark set in 1989-90, and the 11-5 record and second place fi nish in the league standings were the second most wins in both the MW and school history. It was the also the fi rst time in school history that a Cowgirl team had won at least 20 games in back-to-back seasons, along with being invited to post season play. For the second year in a row, Hanna Zavecz was named First Team All-MW and Justyna Podziemska was named MW Newcomer of the Year along with earning Second Team All-MW honors. In 2007-08, the Cowgirls continued where they left off from the previous season as further marks where broken. They started off with an 18-1 record, which was the best start in school history, and tied for the best in the MW as well. With 24 wins, they recorded their third straight 20-win season, which had never been done in the pro-grams' history, and with a 12-4 mark in conference play it also was the most conference wins breaking the 11 wins set the year before.

2014-15 Cowgirl Basketball Head Coach Joe Legerski

JOE LEGERSKI (WYOMING, 1979)University of Wyoming, Head Women's Basketball Coach

Their play helped them earn the Cowgirl programs' fi rst ever bid to the NCAA Tournament. For the fi rst time in school history, they were also ranked among the Top 25 teams in the country by both the Associated Press and USA Today/ESPN Division I Coaches' Poll. Their highest ranking was 15th in the AP (1/28/08) and 16th in the Coaches' Poll (1/29/08). As a team, they were ranked in either poll for 13 weeks during the season and received votes for the other six polls. Wyoming was also honored with several individual awards. Hanna Zavecz was named First Team All-Mountain West for the third straight year, while being named the MW Defensive Player of the Year, Justyna Podziemska earned Second Team All-MW honors for the second straight year, and Aubrey Vandiver was awarded Third Team All-MW honors. Zavecz also garnered Honorable Mention All-America accolades by the Associated Press and for the second year in a row was named to the State Farm Coaches' Honorable Mention All-America Team. In his sixth season with the Cowgirls, they wrapped up the year with a 16-14 record overall and an 8-8 mark in MWC. With a victory over Denver (11/14/08), he would reach his 100th career victory, the fastest head coach to achieve that mark in school history. Four Cowgirls earned conference honors as Hillary Carlson was named Second Team All-MW, Megan McGuffey was Third Team All-MW, Kristen Scheffl er was Honorable Mention All-MW and Emma Langford was named the Sixth Player of the Year. Under his guidance in 2009-10, the Cowgirls recorded a 20-win or more season fi nishing with a 21-12 overall record and a 9-7 mark in the MWC. It was the fourth time out of the fi ve seasons that a Wyoming team had recorded 20-wins or more, along with their sixth consecutive winning season. His teams have played in postseason a record number of times as well. They had played beyond the regular season in four of his seven years, which included the last four of fi ve.
