University of Hawai‘i Chinese Teacher Institute June 23 to July 9, 2021 The 2021 University of Hawai‘i STARTALK Chinese Teacher Institute will recruit 12 pre- or in- service Chinese language teachers in the U.S. (US citizens, permanent residents, or H1-B visa holders who are currently teaching Chinese in U.S. schools) for a 13-instructional day (60 hour) VIRTUAL program led by a nationally known team of trainers. The Institute will also recruit 12 beginning-level students, ages 12 to 16, who will learn Chinese language and culture through online (synchronous and asynchronous) experiences. Selected teacher trainees will be able to experience hands-on implementation of a range of techniques, assess the impact of their teaching on online student learning, and gain new insight into how students learn. By the end of the Institute, participating teachers will- § be comfortably familiar with the World Readiness Standards and STARTALK’s principles; § know how to implement these standards and principles in the virtual classroom; § be comfortable with designing and implementing online lesson plans that support the standards and principles; § be able to self-assess teaching and make adjustments as necessary, using an expanding collection of instructional tools and techniques. A potential post-summer workshop in Honolulu, Hawai‘i, has also been proposed, pending ongoing COVID restrictions and guidelines. Details and a final decision will be made at a later time.
