The2021UniversityofHawai‘iSTARTALKChineseTeacherInstitutewillrecruit12pre-orin-serviceChineselanguageteachersintheU.S.(UScitizens,permanentresidents,orH1-BvisaholderswhoarecurrentlyteachingChineseinU.S.schools)fora13-instructionalday(60hour)VIRTUALprogramledbyanationallyknownteamoftrainers.TheInstitutewillalsorecruit12beginning-levelstudents,ages12to16,whowilllearnChineselanguageandculturethroughonline(synchronousandasynchronous)experiences.Selectedteachertraineeswillbeabletoexperiencehands-onimplementationofarangeoftechniques,assesstheimpactoftheirteachingononlinestudentlearning,andgainnewinsightintohowstudentslearn.BytheendoftheInstitute,participatingteacherswill- § becomfortablyfamiliarwiththeWorldReadinessStandardsand
STARTALK’sprinciples;§ knowhowtoimplementthesestandardsandprinciplesinthevirtualclassroom;§ becomfortablewithdesigningandimplementingonlinelessonplansthatsupportthestandards
andprinciples;§ beabletoself-assessteachingandmakeadjustmentsasnecessary,usinganexpanding
collectionofinstructionaltoolsandtechniques.
