(Honolulu) -The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has selected University of Hawaii at ManoaSchool of Architectures student team, Greenboy Design, as one of two student finalists in its 2010Natural Talent Design Competition. As finalists in the competition, the teams sustainable home design

will be built in New Orleans Broadmoor neighborhood, which was one of the many areas devastated byHurricane Katrina. Once built, the home will enter a measurement and verification phase in which it willbe graded on energy efficiency, water reuse and indoor air quality among other categories.

Members of the winning student design team, consisting of doctoral architecture students Frank Alsup,Sanphawat Jatupatwarangkul, Tuan Tran and Ramo Khem, will travel to New Orleans to meet withlocal architects and community leaders of the Broadmoor District. In addition, the team will alsoshowcase their design at the 2010 USGBC Greenbuild International Conference and Expo in Chicago.

As students, it is exciting to have our teams design be built in an area of our country that has been sotorn by such unfortunate circumstances. It is an honor to be a part of the USGBCs sustainablerebuilding efforts in New Orleans, said Frank Alsup, University of Hawaii Doctor of Architecture

candidate and team member of Greenboy Design.

Competing against over 360 design submissions throughout the United States, Greenboys Design wasselected based on their innovative, affordable, ADA-compliant (American Disabilities Act), LEEDPlatinum home, which demonstrated green building principles and will save future homeowners moneyover the life cycle of their home. Furthermore, their design maintained respect for the Broadmooraesthetic and the opinion of the neighborhood as captured by a community vote, held earlier in thesummer. The USGBC Hawaii Chapter, in collaboration with Stephen Meder, University of Hawaii School ofArchitectures Director of the Center for Smart Building and Community Design, hosted the local portionof the design competition during the 2010 Spring Semester. Meder, along with five local judges with a

diverse knowledge in sustainable design and construction carefully chose Greenboy Design as thewinner in the local portion of the competition. The three top placing local teams were awardedscholarships totaling $3,000, sponsored by Nordic PCL Construction, Inc of Hawai`i. This marks thefirst year that a Hawaii student team has participated in the national competition.

The USGBC Hawai`i Chapter congratulates and is honored to have the Greenboy Design chosen as aNational Finalist. The group has such a great balance of passion, creativity, and the technical skillsneeded to develop such a high performing home design. It is great testament to the UH School of
