STEP 1: Please carefully review the benefits and expectations of participation, as described on pages 1-3.

STEP 2: Please identify an administrator from your school who will partner in the CEEMS Summer Institute with you. His or her role is to attend a three-day Administrator’s Academy in order to support you in facilitating assignments and projects within your classroom. This person should be in a supervisory position, such as your building principal, an assistant principal responsible for curriculum and instruction, or the math or science department chair.

Your administrator needs to complete his/her portion of the application on pages 8-9 and provide a letter of recommendation for you by Friday, January 18, 2013.

STEP 3: Please complete the application on pages 5-7 by Friday, January18, 2013. All applicants will also plan to attend the mandatory orientation session on Tuesday, February 19, 2013 (after school hours). Benefits of Participation

Meet the growing need for engineering educated teachers who are equipped to provide math and science learners with opportunities to achieve recently revised Ohio College & Career Ready Science Standards and the Common Core Math Standards.

Participate in 7 weeks of summer content courses and professional development (PD), and ongoing collaborative, team driven, unit-developing, job-embedded professional development during the school year. (Two year commitment)

Work with others to create, implement, and refine common core standards-based / design- and challenge-based / project-based units.

Teachers will earn a Certificate in Engineering Education and/or graduate credit after completing a 7 week program for two consecutive summers and other course requirements.

Participants receive funds that cover the majority of course registration fees. Each participant receives $6,841/year for the SIT summer courses (in-state tuition is 7,091 per semester). Parking permits will also be provided.

Participants will also receive a stipend of $6,000/year. The majority, $3,500, is awarded after the summer program. o The remainder, $2,500, awarded after implementation of three instructional units and their

web dissemination, and after the teacher has led two professional development workshops, attended three on-campus (UC) reflective Community of Practice meetings and presented at the Annual STEM Conference (as described in more detail below).

o The $2,500 mentioned will be distributed in two payments: $1,250 after the satisfactory completion of the second unit and $1,250 after the satisfactory completion of the third unit and other course requirements.

Each participant in the SIT will receive a wireless laptop with camera and software to use in the program. This will facilitate the creation of learning units required as part of the project and the ability to communicate with project team using Skype. The laptop will be on loan until all required expectations are completed within the two-year program participation. After requirements are complete, the teachers may keep the laptops as long as they remain employed by their respective school districts.

Funds for materials and supplies needed to produce posters and for classroom implementation will be provided; each participant receives $325/yr.

As participants will be expected to lead professional development workshops in their districts, funds are available for two professional district-level development workshops each year for supplies ($25/attendee) and refreshments ($7.50/attendee), up to a maximum of $750 for supplies and $225 for refreshments/teacher.

Travel Funds will be provided for a limited number of participants presenting a paper and/or poster at a regional or national conference.

o Funds will be available for the first 6 teachers/year (@ $625/year/teacher) who have an accepted poster and the first 10 teachers/year (@ $1,250/year/teacher) who have an accepted paper presentation.

o Only one teacher author or co-author per poster or paper presentation will be allowed to avail this opportunity, if multiple co-authors are listed.

Expectations of Participation

Attend a seven week summer program for two consecutive summers that consists of three academic content and pedagogy courses and a one credit hour “content–to-implementation” seminar each summer. The dates are June 17 through August 2, 2013 and June 16-August 1, 2014. Courses will last from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm each day. Attendance at all sessions is required and no exceptions will be made, except under medical related circumstances.

The SIT courses are as follows:

Three Core Engineering Courses:1. Engineering Foundations2. Applications of Technology3. Engineering Applications of Mathematics

One Core Science Course:Modeling and Applications in Physical Sciences

Two Electives from the Remaining Engineering and Science Courses:1. Engineering Models2. Engineering Energy Systems3. Modeling and Applications in Biological Sciences4. Modeling and Applications in Earth Sciences

During each summer participants will fully develop one classroom unit and develop an implementation plan for that unit and two additional units for the academic year. The classroom units prepared will satisfy the following criteria:

o All units must be developed using challenge-based learning and engineering design based teaching pedagogy.

o The teachers will identify the units aligned to common core standards based on student data that shows an area of need.

o A unit will be developed to include at least 2 lessons. A lesson consists of 2 or more activities designed to meet specific learning objectives mapped to common core standards. Each activity/lesson/unit will address real world applications, career awareness, and societal impact (ACS).

o Each unit will have a pre/post and formative and summative assessments. o Teachers will create a video trailer for each unit that highlights its approach to learning. This

video will serve as a preview and valuable reference for future users—other teachers. Resources are available to help teachers develop these videos.

o Teachers will create a Poster for each unit to be displayed in the classroom so that students see a visual of the unit challenge and goals. Support will be provided for poster creation and printing.

o Videotaped classroom implementations: When the unit is implemented in the teacher’s classroom, portions of the unit will be videotaped. This serves in the lesson refinement process.

During the academic year each participant will fully develop and implement the initial unit developed by the end of the SIT and the two additional units planned based on material and experiences from the summer. Thus, in total, a teacher will develop, implement and document for web dissemination three units each year and six units total over the course of two years.

Meet with the Resource Team for job-embedded coaching on a regular basis until units are completed to the satisfaction of the Resource Team.

Integrate the electronic versions of the units into a password protected Wiki. This will be used by the Resource Team for review and feedback.

Each unit completed will be disseminated by UC in a dedicated project website using a standard format. Teachers will assist by making all unit documents available to UC personnel and resource team.

Plan and execute, individually or in collaboration with other SIT participants from the district, two professional development workshops each year for peers in the district so that other teachers can also use the materials and/or create their own materials.

Participate annually in three on-campus (UC) reflective Community of Practice meetings with other teachers to share lessons learned, best practices, and receive additional professional development.

Present unit(s) implemented reflections and findings at an Annual STEM Conference in Cincinnati. These presentations are designed to inform peers and the broader education community on the professional development process, the barriers to effective implementation, and the learning gains that can be achieved.

In order for an applicant to be considered for the CEEMS Summer Institute, he/she must demonstrate the support and recommendation of a supervisor. As the selected administrator, you will be required to do the following:

1) Attend the three day Administrators’ Academy at the University of Cincinnati on June 24-26, 2013.

2) Complete the attached application and submit a letter of reference for the applicant.3) Commit to ongoing support for implementation of design and challenge-based learning in the

applicant’s classes.

As a result of your participation in the Administrators’ Academy, your school will receive the financial resources of approximately $1,000/teacher attending the Summer Institute to support project implementation.
