As a University of California campus, our mission is excellence in teaching, research and public service. While the staff and units within the Division of Student Affairs collaborate with campus and community partners to help undergraduate and graduate students excel in and out of the classroom and laboratory, we consider parents and families equally important partners in that goal.

The Division of Student Affairs is committed to finding student-centered approaches to support student success. This means we are often nimble in our efforts to help students discover strategies to guide their efforts. We believe in the transformational power of education to help our students meet their aspirations. We celebrate the rich diversity of our student population to create an inclusive campus environment. And we are focused on the positive impact our efforts have, so we use our resources wisely to elevate the student experience.

We recognize the powerful opportunities that exist with students’ parents and family

members, and want to offer you as many resources as we can so you, too, can join in on your student’s educational journey. Please visit the Parent-Family Resource website (www.ucmerced.edu/parents), and if you have further questions, don’t hesitate to contact us (209-228-7178 or [email protected]).

Part of what makes UC Merced a special place is that it combines the academic quality of the University of California with the personal attention and support of a small college. We believe in our mission, especially the focus on excellence, and are proud to have your student as part of our community.

I am excited about all that lies ahead for your student, for our campus and for the ways we will, together, change the world around us for the better.

UC Merced opened Sept. 5, 2005, as the 10th campus in the University of California system and the first American research university of the 21st century. Situated near Yosemite National Park, the campus significantly expands access to the UC system for students throughout the state, with a special mission to increase college-going rates among students in the San Joaquin Valley. It also serves as a major base of advanced research, a model of sustainable design and construction, and a stimulus to economic growth and diversification throughout the region.

A Focus on ResearchJust like at other UC campuses, academic research is a critical part of UC Merced’s mission. The process of discovery provides our students with a deeper understanding of the world and its cultural, social, natural and engineered systems, but more, it solves issues and challenges that are critical to the growth, health and overall wellbeing of the region, the state, nation and world.

Our researchers are conducting groundbreaking work in diabetes, cancer, bacterial diseases, antibiotic resistance,

solar energy, climate change, water quality and availability, ecology, engineering, archaeology, cultures, history, political science, computer science and much, much more.

Special research institutes established at the university include:

⊲ Health Sciences Research Institute

⊲ Sierra Nevada Research Institute

⊲ UC Merced Energy Research Institute

⊲ University of California Advanced Solar Technologies Institute (UC Solar)

In addition, startup funding has been received for the:

⊲ Blum Center themed “Global California: The World at Home”

⊲ UC Merced Center for Computational Biology

⊲ Center of Excellence for the Study of Health Disparities in Rural and Ethnic Underserved Populations

⊲ UC Merced Center for Research in the Humanities and Arts

UC Merced has also entered into collaborative research partnerships with the:

⊲ Central Valley Higher Education Consortium

⊲ Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

⊲ National Park Service

A Member of the UC SystemLike all University of California campuses, UC Merced operates under the direction of the UC president and is governed by The Regents of the University of California, a 26-member board established under the California Constitution.

UC Merced is the first new UC campus built since 1965. It was authorized by the California Legislature in 1988 to address the higher-education needs of the state’s fastest-growing region — the San Joaquin Valley, with a population of 6.5 million residents — and increase access to the UC system for the state’s top achievers.

UC Merced’s presence in the Valley is helping address chronically low levels of educational attainment in the region.

Since the fall of 2004, the year before UC Merced opened, applications to UC campuses from Central Valley residents have increased 111 percent and admissions have risen 78 percent (as of September 2013).

For the 2013–14 academic year, freshman enrollment exceeded last year’s then-record class size by about 100 students.

Students hail primarily from the San Francisco Bay Area (30 percent), the greater Los Angeles area (30 percent) and the San Joaquin Valley (40 percent) and comprise the most diverse incoming class in the university’s history.

UC Merced leads the UC system in the percentage of students from underrepresented ethnic groups, low-income families and families whose parents did not attend college. For more details of our campus’s demographics, visit our Fast Facts page. ■

Calvin E. Bright Success Center & Academic AdvisingThe mission of the Calvin E. Bright Success Center is to provide academic advising and learning support services that empower students to be successful in their academic and personal development. The BSC aims to provide academic assistance to students through a collaborative effort campus-wide, with the goal of helping students achieve academic success, overcome barriers, reach exciting milestones in their academic work and develop leadership skills.

Mid-Semester Grades Mid-semester grades provide students in lower division courses with early feedback (both positive and negative) about their academic performance. First-year students with unsatisfactory grades are required to attend a one-hour Academic Success Workshop, where they create their own “Success Plan” to help ensure a strong finish to the semester.

The Students First Center (SFC) is here to help students, parents and the public with questions regarding admissions, financial aid, registration, billing and many other topics. The SFC is always a good place to start when you have questions about UC Merced. Visit studentsfirst.ucmerced.edu for convenient access to important announcements, dates and deadlines, and links to many useful campus and community resources.

UC Merced offers Summer Session every year with the goal of increasing student access to high-demand courses, helping students make appropriate degree progress and enhancing the university experience offered to students in the regular academic term. Each summer, a wide variety of lower-division and upper-division courses are offered in two six-week sessions and one eight week session. Summer Session dates are listed in the UC Merced Academic Calendar. A full list of courses and information regarding Summer Session fees, deadlines and policies are posted online each spring at summersession.ucmerced.edu.

A recent study conducted by UC Merced’s Institutional Research and Decision Support evaluated the graduation rates of freshman who started in the fall terms of 2006, 2007 and 2008. According to this study, “students who enrolled in one or more UCM summer semesters were more likely to have graduated in four years than those who did not.” In fact, “students who took summer sessions only at UCM or at UCM and another college, completed their degree in four years at a significantly higher rate than those who did not enroll in summer sessions or enrolled only for

summers at another college.” The study also showed that students who took summer session at a school other than UC Merced did not graduate any faster than students who never enrolled in summer session.

In addition, students who take courses at UC Merced over the summer benefit from smaller class sizes and the ability to focus on just one subject area. Summer Session students are also able to take advantage of a wide-range of activities coordinated by the Office of Student Life, Outdoor Experience Program and Recreation and Athletics. Students can participate in intramural sports, day trips to Yosemite or Santa Cruz, as well as a variety of on-campus activities. Housing is offered in the summer and financial aid is available.

For more information on Summer Session at UC Merced, please visit summersession.ucmerced.edu or email [email protected]. ■

The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law intended to protect the privacy of student education records accumulated from early childhood through college. FERPA provides parents with certain rights with respect to children’s education records up until entry to the university. When a student enters the university, the rights parents previously held transfer exclusively to the student.

The university considers students as adults, regardless of age or financial

dependence. Ordinarily, parents of UC Merced students obtain information about their students’ records directly from their students. The payment of a student’s tuition by the parent does not, by itself, give the parent the right of access to a student’s education record. Questions regarding these procedures may be directed to the Office of the Registrar. Additional information on FERPA and parents made available by College Parents of America can be found at www.collegeparents.org/ferpa. ■

To fully experience university life, nothing equals living on campus where students are part of a tight-knit community, make lifelong friends, and enjoy the convenience of only a short distance to classrooms and professors’ offices.

On-campus living is more than just a place to stay. It’s an opportunity for students to interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds, hang out and talk about lectures and intriguing topics, form study groups and learn more about themselves and their values. It’s an opportunity for your student to establish his or her

independence and responsibility to the greater community.

Health Please encourage your student to use the Health Center — we provide a relaxed, friendly environment so that students, especially younger students, feel comfortable coming to us for help. Our providers love working with the students and are very aware of health issues specific to this age group.

Even if your student waives out of the UC Student Health Insurance Plan (UCSHIP), he or she is still eligible to use the Health Center for his or her basic health care. Some charges are incurred for specific services without UCSHIP, but these charges are modest.

Health Services provides comprehensive medical, mental health and health promotion services to all UCM registered

students. Services are designed to minimize the impact of illness, emotional distress and injury on studies and work.

Focusing on the foundational principles of leadership, service and social justice, OSL supports the academic mission of the University and enhances the out-of-the-classroom experience for students. With over 160 registered student clubs and organizations active at UC Merced, students have an endless array of opportunities for involvement as well as personal and professional development.
