ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY OF BELGRADE

The University of Belgrade was founded in 1808. It is the oldest and the largest university in Serbia.

All state universities in Serbia and several universities in the region were founded by the University of

Belgrade. Nowadays, the University of Belgrade consists of 31 schools, 11 research institutes, and 8

centers in the fields of vital importance to the functioning of the University, such as: career

development, technology transfer, quality assurance, strategic management and planning, work with

physically challenged students and Computer Center. The University Library “Svetozar Marković”,

with more than 3,500.000 volumes, is also a member of the University.

The University disposes of 11 endowments provided by affluent citizens of Serbia and 7 funds for

supporting 200 best students of the University of Belgrade. The organization of former students of

the University of Belgrade – Alumni of the University of Belgrade – was founded in 2008.

The University of Belgrade provides training in traditional and some new emerging disciplines. Its schools are divided into four groups: - Sciences and Mathematics

- Technology and Engineering Sciences

- Medical Sciences

- Social Sciences and Humanities.

As the largest learning community in this part of Europe, with 310 study programs, of which: 88

undergraduate, 134 master, 67 doctoral studies, 17 academic and 4 applied specializations, 85,762

students and 3,032 academic and research staff, 2,265 papers on SCI, SSCI and AHCI lists,

numerous publications and scientific and research projects, the University of Belgrade has unique

responsibilities and opportunities toward the society.

INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION

It has a very long tradition in academic and cultural exchange, as well as inter-university and

international cooperation with universities within the country and abroad. The University of Belgrade

has also a great experience in cooperation with international organizations focusing on higher

education. This is clearly shown by the bilateral agreements of cooperation concluded with more than

180 universities on every continent, membership in the European University Association (EUA), the

Black Sea Universities Network (BSUN), the Danube Rectors' Conference (DRC), the Balkan

University Network, the University Network of the Adriatic and Ionian Basin (UNIADRION),

Association des Universites Francophones (AUF) and others. The Rector of the University of

Belgrade is the President of Conference of Universities of Serbia, which consists of 17 accredited

state and private universities. The University of Belgrade takes active part in European programs as

a grant holder and partner in many projects (TEMPUS, FP7, CIP, Erasmus, Erasmus Mundus,

EUREKA, COST, IPA etc.). Academic Artistic Associations of the University of Belgrade, ‘Branko

Krsmanović’ and ‘Španac’, also play an active role in students’ life.

Having signed the Bologna Declaration, the University of Belgrade officially joined European Higher

Education Area.

ERASMUS+

The Erasmus+ is a European Union programme aiming to boost skills and employability, as well as

modernise Education, Training, and Youth work. Erasmus+ will provide opportunities for over 4

million Europeans to study, train, gain work experience and volunteer abroad.

It is a successor programme of four EU programmes in which Serbia participated in the period 2007-

2013, i.e. Tempus, Erasmus Mundus, Lifelong Learning Programme and Youth in Action programme.

Some of the projects funded within former programmes are still on-going.

Erasmus+ promotes recognition of qualifications in education, open access to education materials,

documents and media created through funded projects, an international dimension of activity,

multilingualism, equity and inclusion.

The programme will cover the period 2014-2020.

The Erasmus+ programme differentiates between programme and partner countries, as regards

possible modalities of participation of their institutions.

Programme countries are European Union countries, Macedonia, Island, Lichtenstein,

Norway and Turkey.

Partner countries can be those countries neighbouring the EU, including Serbia, as

well as all the other countries in the world.

Key Action 1 - Learning Mobility of Individuals

- or the so-called international credit mobility, is a part of the Erasmus+ program dealing with

academic (students and staff) mobility and exchange. This model of international cooperation was

established in previous, similar programs, such as Erasmus Mundus.

Higher education institutions from Serbia can apply for projects through which they can provide

scholarship schemes for the exchange of students, academic and administrative staff with higher

education institutions from the EU countries.

These projects have a bilateral character – the exchange is performed between a Program country

and a Partner country, and may be established at the level of the University, for all its members, or

only one Faculty/Institute, depending on the academic offer and interests of the HE institutions

involved.

The University of Belgrade has created an online software platform "MobiOn" in order to facilitate the

application procedure for Erasmus+ KA1 candidates. The potential applicants must use this

platform in order to apply for exchange and should note that those applications received or sent in

any way other than through "MobiOn" will not be accepted.

The "MobiOn" platform requires you to register in order to be able to access the application form and

submit the requested documents. We use the information you will provide from our service to rank

you as a participant to “MobiOn” programs as defined by the privacy policy. You do not need to finish

the application at one sitting; rather, you will be able to access your application frequently before you

finally submit it for our review and ranking. Once your application has successfully been submitted,

you will receive a confirmation and the number your application has been submitted under. Please

keep this number, as you may need it for future reference.

All incoming candidates must previously be officially nominated by their home

universities.

LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION:

The official language of instruction is Serbian. However, there are numerous accredited

University of Belgrade can provide for final thesis work. Students chose their final thesis topic in

consultation with their supervisor.

ENTERING THE COUNTRY AND TEMPORARY STAY PERMIT

ENTRY VISA There are many nationalities which do not need any entry visa for Serbia. However, please see

Even though nationals of some countries (not everyone) may enter the Republic of Serbia with

their ID cards only, students/staff on exchange are required to have with themselves their valid

passports to be able to obtain mandatory temporary say visa, and therefore are strongly

recommended to use it when entering the country as well.

TEMPORARY STAY

As an academic exchange visitor, you will need to obtain your temporary stay visa (residence permit) for legal stay in the Republic of Serbia during your exchange.

REGISTRATION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF BELGRADE

As an Erasmus+ exchange visitor, you are required to register at the IRO of the University of Belgrade right upon your arrival to Belgrade, and to show your ID document (preferably passport, please see the previous page for explanation) to the UB contact person:

Prior to your arrival, please make sure you contact the Coordinator for International Relations at your home university, and learn about all the procedures and documents you need in order to successfully start and complete your exchange.

Depending on the nature of your visit and stay, in the UB International Relations Office (23), you might get appropriate certificates and will be asked to fill out a Confirmation of Arrival form. Also, you will be asked to sign Confirmation on Departure on the last day of your mobility.

REGISTRATION AT THE OFFICE FOR FOREIGNERS

Depending on the type and length of your visit, after registering at the International Relations Office of the University of Belgrade, you might be required to register at the Office for Foreigners of the Ministry of Interior, submitting all or some of the following:

- 2 photos - Certificate from the University of Belgrade - Certificate from the Ministry of Education - Certificate from the Faculty of the University of Belgrade (school you will be

attending/visiting) - Form No. 8 (request for issuing a temporary stay visa – for foreign citizens - in Serbian:

Zahtev za odobrenje privremenog boravka – za strance) 3 copies, printed two-sided1 - Proof of Accommodation (a certificate from the housing provider /hostel, dormitory, etc/,

or personal presence of the flat owner in case of a private accommodation) - CV in Serbian2

SCHOLARSHIP PAYMENTS & TRAVEL COSTS

All Erasmus+ scholarship payments and travel costs are managed by your home university.

Make sure you learn from them more in detail about schedules and procedures.

1. Students coming to the University of Belgrade

If you are granted an Erasmus+ scholarship for one semester or the whole academic year to go

and study abroad you will receive:

Monthly subsistence allowance for Serbia as a host country: EUR 650

Travel costs covered in the amounts listed below Tuition fees are waived according to Erasmus+ agreement

2. Staff (Teaching and Administrative) coming to the University of Belgrade If you are granted an Erasmus+ scholarship for mobility you will receive:

Daily subsistence allowance for Serbia as a host country: EUR 160 Note: If mobility period is longer than 14 days: Up to and including the 14th day of activity you will get 100% of Subsistence allowance. For every additional day you will receive 70% of Subsistence allowance.

IMPORTANT: In majority of cases you will have to buy the ticket yourself and receive refund calculated on the basis of the amounts and distances in the table above. The refund will be done by the Program Country University. Subsistence allowance is paid upon the Confirmation of arrival sent to the home University and you will need to have an active bank account. Please check in advance whether you will need to open the bank account in the host country or not.

ACCOMMODATION

IMPORTANT: Accommodation and meals are not provided. You will need to use your subsistence allowance to cover these expenses.

STUDENT DORMITORY: HOSTELS

Student dormitories in Belgrade are run and managed by the Student’s Centre Belgrade.

Within their offer, they also have two hostels available for individuals or groups.

2. Hostel „Studentski grad“ – For Student Mobility

Hostel „Studentski grad“ is situated at Student town in New Belgrade and it offers accommodation in

completely renovated and modern equipped rooms with 39 beds. It is opened during whole year and

it is suitable for individual and group visits as well. Hostel offers accommodation in single, double and

three bedded rooms with private bathroom and tea kitchen. For reservatgion, prices and contact

IMPORTANT: Student’s Centre Belgrade is an independent institution. Therefore,

accommodation in all of their venues is independently arranged by visitors themselves, directly

with the management of hostels. For email addresses and phone numbers, please visit the links.

RENTED ACCOMMODATION

Visitors can rent their own accommodation. The University of Belgrade does not mediate in

renting private accommodation, but there are numerous online resources for finding

accommodation. Also, you may wish to contact the ESN Belgrade and ask for their help in

finding accommodation. They can also help you get in touch with peers from all over the world,

so you can consider sharing accommodation.

COSTS OF LIVING

Please note that all costs listed in this document are approximate estimates only and are

intended to help foreign visitors plan their financial resources.

Actual expenditures can significantly vary depending on individual spending habits, and, of

course, whether one plans to live alone or with flat mates.

We estimate that students and visitors need an average of €450-600 per month per person to cover their accommodation costs, costs of utilities, meals, city transportation, some necessary personal expenses and incidentals. Instruction materials and textbooks are not included, as each school of the University of Belgrade has its own required literature, and the prices vary. Please see more under the “Costs of studying”.

ACCOMMODATION AND UTILITIES Prices of the housing in a student dormitory vary depending on the number of persons sharing the room. Approximately, single-bed room per person per month costs €420; double-bed room per person per month costs €350, while triple-bed room per person per month costs €220. All utilities included. Rented accommodation: Again, prices depend on the size, location and the condition of the rented flat. However, approximate price of a shared flat (e.g. 2 people) in the urban city area would be €250-300 + utilities (€100-150).

TUITION FEES

Erasmus+ exchange students do not pay tuition fees.

TEXTBOOKS AND INSTRUCTION MATERIALS

The type and the amount of required literature varies significantly, and therefore it would be the

best to contact the faculty of interest and check the prices of literature per each year. However,

our approximate estimate is €100-300 per student per year (depending on the Faculty and the

study level).

Additionally, any mandatory administrative expenses or fees are paid by all students, and may

vary among different faculties.

provided to you according to the specific agreement under which your mobility was arranged.

TRANSPORT FROM THE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

There are a few travel options when traveling between Belgrade airport “Nikola Tesla” and the

city center.

Mini bus A1 - Runs every 20 minutes. The end point is Slavija square (Trg Slavija). A ticket can

be purchased from the bus driver at the price of 300 dinars.

GSP bus 72 – Runs every 30 minutes. The end point is Zeleni venac. A ticket can be purchased

at a kiosk or from the bus driver at the price of 72 and 150 dinars, respectively.

You will find the bus stop just outside the terminal (-1 level).

You may also take a TAXI to your destination. Please make sure to order yourself a taxi at the

Taxi Info stand at the airport. One of the stands is exactly in front of the exit door of the

International Arrivals hall (-1 level). You will immediately get a receipt, and you will pay at the

end of the ride.

Please be careful about independently taking among the many taxies waiting in front of the

airport, as you might be overcharged.

SERBIAN LANGUAGE

The official language in Serbia is Serbian and the script in official use is Cyrillic, while Latin script is also used. In the areas inhabited by ethnic minorities, the languages and scripts of the minorities are in official use, as provided by law. It is the Slavic language (Indo-European), of the South Slavic subgroup. Serbian is practically the only European standard language with complete synchronic digraphia, using both Cyrillic and Latin alphabets, with speakers reading the two scripts equally well. The Serbian Cyrillic alphabet was devised in 1814 by Serbian linguist Vuk Karadžić, who created the alphabet on phonemic principles. On the Internet you can find various websites and online resources for learning Serbian, or just picking up its main phrases. However, if you are interested in it and wish to ensure you learn it well, we recommend the UB Center for Serbian as a Foreign Language. The Center for Serbian as a foreign language, at the Faculty of Philology, Belgrade University, has been offering intensive courses in Serbian for international learners-participants since 1986.
