IRIS - DefinitionIRIS (Institutional Research Information System)  belongs to the family of software internationally defined as CRIS (Current Research Information System).

These systems allow management and dissemination of research data activity.

Libraries and IRIS

• As part of IRIS a specific management typology is active, defined as IR /OA – Institutional Repository / Research Opena Archive;

• The module is implemented through the use of Dspace (www.dspace.org)

Libraries and IRIS• DSpace is an open source software, which allows an easy and open access to any type of digital content (text, images, movies, data sets, etc ...). In Dspace workflow there are three main stages:

• Data entry by author;

• Data handling and storage by collection editor;

• Data research and use by Catalogue user.

Validation inDSpace workflow

• DSpace allows the activation of a maximum of three successive validation moments

Validation in IRIS workflow - 1

• IRIS uses step 2 of DSpace in its validation flow;• Step 2 allows three actions:

• Modification and integration of metadata entered by the author (you still can’t modify the product uploaded);

• Acceptance and adding the product to Catalogue;• Product return to the author (eg. in case of inconsistencies between the product uloaded and

thebibliographic description entered by the author).

Validation in IRIS workflow - 2• In a situation of "validation ACTIVE" (to be configured at the system level), at the moment when an author complete his insertion of a product on their "Desktop of products", the item is sent to the validation process;

• As part of the validation process, it’s performed a control about quality of data and its suitability for the publication on the public portal.

Validation in IRIS workflow IRIS - 3

• The intervention of Libraries in the validation workflow must be precisely configured in step 2, immediately after the product data entry by the author and just before the final publication on the institutional repository.

Research data and Libraries - 1• Research data are constituted from factual findings collected, produced and recorded by researchers during their study and research activities. These items are considered by the scientific community as necessary to validate research results;

• Variety of data products and their massive growth make relevant and important starting of reasoned actions of Data Management;

• Research funding is increasingly connected to filing and sharingof search results;

• Product data value is closely linked to its present and future accessibility.

Research data and Libraries - 2• Libraries can play a role of interface and coordination in the implementation of Research Data Management procedures, in a synergistic collaboration between Librarians, Research offices and Information Services;

• Libraries are capable to offer services and expertise that can facilitate the use and development of University's digital infrastructure.

Libraries and IRIS10 recommendations for Libraries wishing to be involved in activities of Research Data ManagementOffer support to the activities of research data management, which may include the drafting of management plans date for access to public funding, warnings about intellectual property rights and information material.

Involvement in the development of standards related to data and metadata, providing services for metadating of research data.

Create job positions for Data Librarians and develop professional skills for data librarianship activities

Participate actively in the development of institutional policy for Research Data.

Collaboration with researchers, research groups and data centers to encourage the development of a platform for accessing, searching and sharing data.

Assistance in maintenance access to research data, through the provision of storage, search and permanent access services.

Promotion of correct citation of research data, through the use of persistent identifiers.

Implementation of the Institutional Repository.

Participate in the development of data management practices for specific subject areas.

Provide opportunities for secure storage of research data, in cooperation with the IT services of the University and / or through local or cloud systems.

Institutional Repository - 1• Collaboration in Institutional Repository tuning activities;• Guarantee of specialization and representation for all scientific areas of the University in seeking out the best solutions for all disciplines;

• Formal control of search products published in the Institutional Repository of the University;

• Product’s descriptive metada enrichment;• Improvement of the external visibility of products through subject indexing and classification.
