Course in Depth

What will I study?

This is a practice-focused programme which will equipyou with the skills and knowledge required to become anoutstanding teacher and trainer in the Further Educationand Training sector.

The programme will develop your professionalism,consider what makes highly effective teachers andtrainers, and explore current issues in the LifelongLearning sector. You will gain a detailed understanding ofthe Professional Standards for Teachers and Trainers inEducation and Training through a combination ofself-evaluation, action planning and reflection. Theprogramme will enhance and strengthen your knowledgeof effective curriculum design and development, examinethe impact of resources and learning technologies, andevaluate innovative and creative approaches to teaching,learning and assessment.

You will also have the opportunity to select an optionalmodule in English/Literacy, Maths/Numeracy or SpecialEducational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) in order toenhance your employability further.

How will I study?

The programme is delivered through a combination oflectures, seminars, tutorials and workshops, as well asprofessional practice.

Attendance is typically two days per week on campus,with three days per week dedicated to professionalpractice.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is through coursework and observations ofteaching and training. The assessment strategies arevaried but place a significant focus on developing

knowledge and skills that will be useful in practice.Portfolios of evidence, drawn from the trainee's practice,encourage the development of innovation in teaching andlearning activities.

During the programme each trainee will be observedeight times. These observations will be shared betweentutors and work-based mentors. This approach offers youfeedback not only on generic aspects of teaching but alsothe teaching of your subject specialism.

There are no formal written examinations as part of thecurrent assessment methods on this programme.

Who will be teaching me?

You will be taught by tutors who have a wealth of Furtherand Higher Education experience and work-basedmentor trainers who are specialists in their subject area.

Modules

CET1423: The Developing Teacher (20 credits)The Developing Teacher is designed to support you in developing the academic and personal skills required toeffectively engage with your professional practice placement. You will examine the context, curriculum, professionalroles and responsibilities of the teacher and develop the essential tools and techniques required to teach and manage aclass. The module will help you to recognise the rationale for teaching; examine how the planning, design and deliveryof teaching can enhance the learning experience; practice planning, justifying and delivering a short session; andreflect upon and develop future practice following constructive feedback.

CET2530: The Research Informed Teacher (20 credits)The Research Informed Teacher focuses on developing your professionalism through enhancing your understandingof your own professional identity, role and responsibilities. The module provides the theoretical underpinning ofteaching, learning and assessment in preparation for effective planning and delivery. It will enable you to consider thewider professional role of the teaching in addressing behaviour for learning, meeting learning support needs, andcreating an inclusive and safe environment. There is a particular focus on integrating research-informed theory intopractice.

CET2534: The Outstanding Teacher (20 credits)The Outstanding Teacher focuses on what makes outstanding teachers and trainers. You will examine the wider role ofthe teacher within the Lifelong Learning Sector, consider internal and external influences in education and training andassess how these impact on practice. Investigating and examining current issues in the sector, the module providesideal preparation for you to graduate as an outstanding practitioner.

CET2535: The Professional Teacher in Practice (20 credits)The Professional Teacher in Practice enables you to gain a thorough grounding in the essentials of teaching, learning,assessment, communication and reflection in the Further Education and Training sector. Applying theoretical modelsto practical teaching experience on placement, this is a wide ranging module which covers all aspects of practicalteaching. Module activities incorporate the modelling of dynamic and innovative teaching methods and learningstrategies.

CET2536: The Reflective Teacher in Practice (20 credits)The Reflective Teacher in Practice provides you with a thorough grounding in the essential skills of self-evaluation,action planning and reflection. The module provides a vehicle for personal development and a deep understanding ofprofessional standards. You will carry out an initial audit of your personal and academic skills and from this create anongoing Individual Development Plan. The module culminates in the production of a clear and justified Career EntryDevelopment Plan.

You will select one of the following modules:

CET2531: The Employable Teacher (Maths/Numeracy) (20 credits)The Employable Teacher (Maths/Numeracy) enhances your expertise and knowledge of curriculum design anddevelopment in the delivery of Mathematics/Numeracy. In particular, the module will enable you to become skilled inthe provision of contextualised and embedded teaching, learning and assessment of numeracy.

CET2532: The Employable Teacher (English/Literacy) (20 credits)The Employable Teacher (English/Literacy) enhances your expertise and knowledge of curriculum design anddevelopment in the delivery of English/Literacy. In particular, the module will enable you to become skilled in theprovision of contextualised and embedded teaching, learning and assessment of literacy.

CET2533: The Employable Teacher (SEND) (20 credits)The Employable Teacher (SEND) enhances your expertise and knowledge of curriculum design and development in thedelivery of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). In particular, the module will enable you to becomeskilled in the provision of contextualised teaching, learning and assessment that supports learners within the SENDcurriculum.

Timetables

Timetables for your first week are normally available at the end of August prior to enrolment in September. You canexpect to receive your timetable for the rest of the academic year during your first week. Please note that while wemake every effort to ensure that timetables are as student-friendly as possible, scheduled teaching can take place onany day of the week. Wednesday afternoons are normally reserved for sports and cultural activities.

Entry Criteria

Entry Requirements

You need to hold a recognised professional qualificationat a minimum of Level 3 (NQF/QCF) such as a BTECNational, City & Guilds Advanced, NVQ Level 3, orequivalent. Your qualification needs to be in the subjectarea that you wish to teach and you need to havepost-qualification experience of employment in thatprofessional area.

GCSE English and GCSE Mathematics at Grade C orGrade 4 or above, or equivalent, are desirable.

If you wish to select English (Literacy) as your specialism,you will require GCSE English at Grade A or Grade 7 orabove, or equivalent, together with an A Level, orequivalent, in a Humanities subject, such as English, Lawor History.

If you wish to select Mathematics (Numeracy) as yourspecialism, you will require GCSE Mathematics at GradeA or Grade 7 or above, or equivalent, together with an ALevel, or equivalent, in a related subject, such asMathematics, Physics, Statistics or Accounting.

An interview forms part of the selection process.

If you accept a formal offer from Edge Hill University youwill be required to apply for a Disclosure and BarringService (DBS) Enhanced Disclosure indicating that youmeet the mandatory criteria of 'Clearance to Work with

Children and/or Vulnerable Adults'. The standard cost ofapplying for DBS Enhanced Disclosure for this course iscurrently £50. Further information will be sent to youafter you have firmly accepted an offer.

English Language Requirements

International students require IELTS 6.0, with a score nolower than 5.5 in each individual component, or anequivalent English language qualification.

If your current level of English is half a band lower, eitheroverall or in one or two elements, our Pre-SessionalEnglish course might be for you.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Edge Hill University recognises learning gainedelsewhere, whether through academic credit andqualifications acquired from other relevant courses ofstudy or through recognition of an individual'sprofessional and employment experience (also referredto as 'experiential learning').

Previous learning that is recognised in this way may beused towards meeting the entry requirements for aprogramme and/or for exemption from part of aprogramme. It is your responsibility to make a claim forrecognition of prior learning. Successfully completing this University Higher Diplomacan give you a distinct advantage as you seekemployment as a teacher in further education andtraining.

The programme is specifically designed to allow you todemonstrate achievement of the Professional Standardsfor Teachers and Trainers in Education and Training.These Professional Standards, published in May 2014,

stipulate the minimum professional requirement in termsof knowledge, skills and professional values. Once youhave completed this programme and are active as ateacher, trainer or tutor in the sector, you will be eligibleto apply for Qualified Teacher Status Learning and Skills(QTLS) as part of the professional formation process.

For those candidates who may be experienced, and evenqualified, within their professional sector, e.g. police andNHS trainers, undertaking a nationally recognisedqualification may offer wider employment opportunities.

Tuition Fees

If you are a prospective UK or EU student who will bejoining this University Higher Diploma in academic year2018/19, the tuition fee will be £9,250 per annum.Tuition fees for international students enrolling on theprogramme in academic year 2018/19 are £11,800 perannum.

The University may administer a small inflationary rise intuition fees, in line with Government policy, insubsequent academic years as you progress through thecourse.
