Introduction

The University Calendar for 2011/12 sets the annual schedule of key dates in the administration oftaught courses and committees deploying a pattern approved by Academic Council for the next five-year period to 2015. By establishing a common structure for the University year forward planning for

students, staff, and events will be facilitated. While the start and end dates for the year will follow thispattern the designation of specific dates for assessment will be adjusted annually.

The timetables for teaching and assessment for Intensive Block mode, Distance Learning delivery andShort courses are not governed by this Calendar.

Courses delivered collaboratively with other institutions will normally follow a timetable agreed jointlywith the partner organisation while observing the general principles which underpin the University ofWestminster Calendar.

Guided Independent Study

During each Semester two weeks of specific activities known as Guided Independent Study weeks aretimetabled to help broaden students acquisition of knowledge and skills within each module, and topromote links between learning in different modules at the same academic Level. This period may beused as a two-week block or as two separate weeks. The timing of these weeks is determined by theCourse Team subject to the approval of the academic Head of Department. For this reason the GuidedIndependent Study dates are not shown in the University Calendar.

All key dates and other information about course and module delivery are published on each SchoolsRegistry homepage.

Coursework deadlines

It is important that formative assessment opportunities are provided for students early in each Semesterand that the deadlines for summative coursework are staggered wherever possible to avoid bunching ofdeadlines, particularly in core modules.

The final coursework submission dates shown in this Calendar for each Semester indicate theabsolutely final deadline necessary to allow marking and feedback for students on their work for thatSemester. For the majority of coursework set the submission date will be prior to this final deadline.

Time should be allowed for return of marked coursework with written feedback before students sitexaminations.

Coursework deadlines can only be specified for Mondays to Thursdays, not for Fridays, so that theallowance of a further 24 hours for late submission can be completed before the weekend.

Assessment Marks

Provisional marks will be released on SRSWeb throughout each Semester. These marks indicate thepreliminary assessment judgements of the academic staff prior to their scrutiny by External Examiners.Provisional marks are therefore liable to change once they have been reviewed by the full examining

team during the formal Assessment Board processes. For this reason provisional marks have the statusof indicative marks, not final marks.

Confirmed results aggregate the marks for all aspects of assessment within a module. These resultswill be released incrementally, when authorised by the relevant Assessment Boards, during June andJuly for Undergraduate courses and during September and October for Postgraduate courses.

Each School will publish its own schedule for submission of marks by academic staff and for

Assessment Boards.

Mitigating Circumstances (MCs)

Students may need to submit formal documentation to record unforeseen Mitigating Circumstancesthey have experienced which have prevented their participation in assessment. They should beadvised to complete the MC form and submit it with the supporting documented evidence as close intime as possible to the deadline for the assessment in question.

The validity of these claims of Mitigating Circumstances will be considered locally within the School todetermine whether or not a student may be entitled to a deferred assessment. Therefore no University-

level deadline for MC submissions will be set.

Religious Observance

The University seeks to support students from a range of cultures and religious faiths. Accordingly theUniversity Calendar includes key dates when formal assessment should not be scheduled so thatstudents who practise a given faith may take part in a religious festival or holy day.

Formative assessment (such as in-class tests) and summative assessment (such as language tests,group assessment, and examinations) should not be scheduled between 13.00 hrs and 14.00 hrs onany date shown as a religious observance day in the week-to-week calendar, nor at any time onSaturday or Sunday. These prohibitions do not affect Short Courses or Residential Activities orapproved Field Trips or Guided Independent Study weeks.

University of Westminster Students Union (UWSU) meetings

Teaching should not be scheduled on the following date when the UWSU Annual Conference will beheld:

University Closure

The University will be closed on the English Bank Holidays indicated. In addition the University will beclosed over the Christmas and New Year period 2011 2012 from 13.00 hrs on Friday 23 December2011 and will re-open on Tuesday 3 January 2012.

Systems Maintenance periods

Essential maintenance and upgrade activities for the Universitys computer systems has beenscheduled for three periods of 48 hours across the 2011-12 year.

During these days all ICT services such as log-in, remote access, email, web access, Blackboard, file,

print, library systems, Student Record System (SRS) and Human Resource and Finance systems willnot be available.

Therefore any learning and teaching activities that would normally involve access to these Informationand Communication Technology (ICT) systems should be adjusted to take place on different dates or indifferent modes.
