VALLE DEL CAUCA: CALI

The region is the door which joins the country with the economy of the Pacific region, axe of worldwide development in the current century. Buenaventura, its principal port, connects with more than 80 seaports of the world and mobilizes 50 % of the entire national freight.

Its industrial diversity makes Valle Del Cauca a leader region in products of worldwide class and home of the main sugar and pharmaceutical industry of the country. It’s a transforming center of raw materials which imports incomes and exports added value to the national, Andean, and North American markets principally, where companies have found a firm platform to produce and export to more than 52 multinationals.

The Valle Del Cauca industry finds itself in third place of importance in Colombia since it has a great variety of agricultural and industrial products. Its economy is also founded on the articulation of productive chains of services such as health, logistics, software, engineering, tourism, cultural industries, education, and knowledge.

Its capital is Santiago de Cali, the third most important city of Colombia. Its strategic location, its industrial, commercial, and service vocation, its leadership in entrepreneurship responsibility and its human talent, makes it one of the greatest urban centers attractions for the investors in the Colombian south-west. It’s a cheerful and modern city, characterized by its warm weather and fruitful and generous landscape; in the midst of all this, in the south edge of the city, the campus of Universidad Autonoma de Occidente is found.

The university campus joins technological, architectonic, and environmental elements to guarantee the integral education of our students according to the objectives outlined by the University towards the future.

The University trains ethical, creative, and reflective professionals, able to think globally in order to perform locally, with the necessary teamwork and communication skills, as well as being able to respect other’s ideas and assume leadership. Thus, the education is oriented to develop competences which favor:

» The critical reflection on the contents of learning. » The construction of learning in situations contrary to the ideal or foreign contexts. » The capacity to judge rational arguments including their own and learning by themselves in order to foster intellectual autonomy and personal growth.

» Openness to dialogue and different forms of analysis, knowledge, argumentation, and research. » The respect and care for the environment, in pro of sustainable development. » The usage of technological tools which facilitate generation of knowledge.

In this context, the new educational model of the institution is integral, flexible, and socially pertinent. It is integral since it is concerned with the professional, physical and ethical education of its students; flexible, so that the program contents can be adapted to the changes and needs of modern life; and socially pertinent, in order for the university to have a synergic interaction with the region and propose solutions to its problems.

To achieve this, the University counts with 72 laboratories, more than 130 audiovisual spaces, a library with access to more than 200.000 documents in all the areas of knowledge in both digital and physical format, a staff of professors with Masters Degree and PhD, graduated from well known universities from both the country and abroad.

“Since the beginning of my collaborations with the Autonoma de Occidente, I have been able to observe various characteristics that I can highlight, such as the capacity and the level of education of its professors who maintain a constant effort to reach perfection and keep themselves updated. Additionally, there is an administrative structure that provides an excellent support to teaching and research. This operation is also characterized by a suitable use of the information and communication technologies. It also stands out, in my opinion, its awareness of the social function that universities have to develop today, allowing it to stand as an irreplaceable element of development in the region and the country”.

“The experience was superb, the entire course is well organized, people are friendly and the itinerary we had was incredibly enriching for our students who could visit the different ecosystems and the biomes; it has been inspiring for me and my students.”

“The Autonoma Campus has a great infrastructure; the laboratories support and the hardware and software they have, gives you the impression they are really focused on a well-structured education process and the development of citizen competences that the region, the country, and the world need.”

“I was fascinated with the infrastructure of the UAO; it is a well maintained university, very clean and with much floral charm. Professors are very friendly and I like the classes’ methodology, I find everything very creative. The technologies and the university means are great; you have all the amenities for the students. Likewise, the programs offered by the University are a very good proposal so that the student feels at home even when studying. I joined the Godfather program which is the best thing I could have done, and the attention that I have been given from international relations is incredible.”

“At Universidad Autonoma de Occidente there’s a great culture of respect and commitment .In my classes in England there’s an average of 200 students, while here there are much smaller classes, around 20 to 30 people; I think with this system you can learn better. To me is much easier being a student here.”

“I chose Colombia among the Latin America countries because in my mind, it is the best place in the entire continent; its people, its music, its food are incomparable to other places, besides, before traveling, my university partners told me, Travel at ease that Colombia is a fantastic place! Personally, this experience gave me cultural growth and I matured a lot. My recommendation for other students is without hesitating to come to Colombia, you can take advantage of the whole experience!”

“One of my dreams has been to travel to Colombia, first because it is the first host country of the network Duale Hochschule in Latin-America, with 10 years of background and experience, and above all because it has always been characterized for its charisma, the attention and kindness from its people in Cali and I definitely confirmed it in this city and specially with the people who make part of the Autonoma de Occidente because they greeted me with their arms wide open and helped me to feel at home which made this experience completely satisfactory. “
