Employee LeaveHow many days of paid leave do SCUC ISD employees receive per year? The State of Texas provides five days of personal leave each school year. State personal leavemay be used at the employee’s discretion, subject to policy limitations [see policy DEC (Local)] in the SCUC ISD Board Policy Online Manual. The District provides local leave, which is accrued throughout the school year. The number of local leave days provided to employees is based on the number of days worked, according to the table below. Leave balances are available in Employee Access, which run approximately one month behind.

What is the difference between state and local leave? State minimum personal leave is provided by the Texas Education Agency and can be used at theemployee’s discretion, based on the District leave guidelines. Local sick days are provided by

SCUC ISD and are used for employee or family members illness. A medical certification is required for absences more than three consecutive workdays.

What are the guidelines for using state leave? Use of personal leave:A request for personal leave must be submitted through Eduphoria (Formspace) to the principal or supervisor two working days prior to the anticipated absence.Limitations on state leave:● Shall not exceed three consecutive workdays● Not allowed on the day before a school holiday, the day after a school holiday, professional

or staff development days, or days scheduled for district-wide standardized tests● The Superintendent, or designee, may approve exceptions to these limits with documented

emergency circumstances

What happens if I do not use all of my leave by the end of the school year? At the end of each school year, any unused local sick leave or state personal leave is carried over to the next school year. Should you choose to leave SCUC ISD, any accrued state personal leave can be transferred to any K-12 institution within the state of Texas; whereas, accrued local sick leave does not transfer.

Who should I call with questions about leave? Employees should first direct specific questions about leave usage to his/her supervisor. For additional questions regarding leave balances, please contact the payroll office at 210-945-6246.

Page 14: UNIVERSAL CITY ISD!

Compensation

When will I receive my first paycheck? The date an employee receives his/her first paycheck will depend on their start date. All professional and paraprofessional employees are paid monthly. Auxiliary employees are paid semi-monthly.

Monthly employees are paid on the 20th day of the month or the earliest business day prior if the pay day falls on a weekend. Semi-monthly auxiliary employees are paid twice per month, on the 15th and the last working day of each month, or the earliest business day prior to payday if it falls on a weekend.

The annual salary of a professional or paraprofessional employee is paid in 12 monthly payments, and auxiliary employees are paid in 24 semi-monthly payments. This is intended to provide continuous, year-round income for all employees.During the school year, if you are on a monthly pay cycle and you started work after the 5th of the month, then you will receive your first paycheck on the following month’s scheduled pay day. For auxiliary employees, paychecks will be issued on the designated payroll closing date.

Who should I call with payroll questions?Any payroll questions can be directed to Jeff Teske, Payroll Supervisor, at [email protected] or at 210-945-6246.

What is TRS and when do I qualify? Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) is the public pension plan of the State of Texas. TRS provides retirement and related benefits for those employed by public schools, colleges and universities supported by the State of Texas. TRS is an alternative to the Social Security system in which benefits-eligible SCUC ISD employees are required to participate. The money deducted from your payroll check by SCUC ISD is sent monthly directly to TRS and placed in a retirement account in your name. You cannot opt out of these deductions because they are mandated by the state as long as you work in the Texas Public School System. Once you have worked under TRS for five years, you will be vested in the Teacher Retirement System of Texas. TRS also has a life insurance benefit, in which you will need to name a beneficiary in order to be valid.
