with Debra and the group, primarily to advise about and organize the yoga classes that would make up a unique part of the exhibit experi-ence. We worked on the plans, assembling a group of about 20 teachers, including our own Lori Ritland, and met to organize classes and discuss how to convey the practices and con-cepts reflected in the art through the medium of a yoga class.

The exhibit opened on October 19 and will run through January 26, 2014 before moving on to San Francisco and Cleveland.

As a student of yoga or even someone interested in yoga, you must see the exhibit. The art is beau-tiful and captivating. The six rooms that house the exhibit contain sculptures, paintings, posters, and films portraying yogic practices and culture spanning nearly two thousand years. Battles between armies of yogis where thousands died and the fearsome tantric yoginis and their skull cups of blood are just a couple of the fascinating things that I learned about. Not the usual stuff of your Wednesday night yoga class. You’ll just have to go and see for yourself.

Yoga is often referred to as an art and a science. You can see that in the title of the Sackler exhibit, Yoga: The Art of Transformation. The first defini-tion of art in the Merriam-Webster Online Dic-tionary defines art as: something that is created with imagination and skill and that is beautiful or that expresses important ideas or feelings.

Yoga certainly fits that definition. The artistic nature of yoga is part of what drew me to it in the first place. As a practicing and performing musician in my teens and twenties, I had already experienced the beautiful and transcendent nature of the art of music. And I was aware of the discipline required to develop the skills necessary to be able to express the feelings I felt.

But it took years of practicing to begin to experi-ence and understand the truly expressive qual-ity that is possible in both arts. I developed my skills and became accomplished at both both music and yoga. But something was missing, and I didn’t even know it.

Surprisingly, I can pinpoint the moments when I first woke up to the inner expressive nature of both music and yoga. Musically, that moment came one night while I was listening to a record-ing of The Allman Brothers Band playing live at the Fillmore East. Up until that time, although I listened to jazz, improvisation had not really made much sense to me. Now it did.

That moment came for me in yoga one day in Pune, India, home of the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute. Mr. Iyengar had asked me to come to the platform to demonstrate Ar-dha Chandrasana (Half-Moon Pose). I did the pose, and to the class he said, “You see, he has the shape of the pose, but,” and at that moment he smacked me on the side of the head, “he is doing the pose completely from his head. He must learn to do the pose from his heart.”

I realized that I had been “figuring out” the poses, deciding what was the right thing to do with each part and putting it all together like a puzzle. What I had been missing was the music of the poses. As much as I enjoyed doing them and as skillful as I was, I hadn’t been letting the poses sing.

Thought, study, analysis: these are important and necessary ingredients for playing music and doing yoga. But they are means, means to open the doors to the beauty, imagination, and feeling that turn music and yoga from skillful practices to an art that expresses the light of the Inner Being.

One of the greatest satisfactions I have found in life is the delight of sharing the joy of yoga with others. And one of the rare people that I have shared this experience with is Liz Marx. Liz began studying with me in 1981, back when I was teaching in private homes and church basements. She became a devoted student, and over time her presentation of the poses changed tremendously. In all my years of teaching, then and since, Liz is the person most changed by her practice.

John Schumacher is the founder and director of Unity Woods. He has prac-ticed yoga for over 40 years and has taught in the Washing-

ton area since 1973. John continues to study in India with B.K.S. Iyengar, the world’s foremost Yoga teacher, and is a certified Advanced Iyengar Yoga teacher. He also spent many years studying with internationally acclaimed teacher Dona Holleman.

John’s clear, precise style and his engaging sense of humor have made him one of the country’s leading yoga teachers. Yoga Journal cited him as one of "25 Americans who are shaping yoga today." He has written for a variety of publications and has appeared in numerous local and national media, including U.S. News and World Report, Yoga Journal, Washingtonian Maga-zine, the Washington Times, the Washington Post, PBS and others. John speaks about the practice and benefits of yoga on radio and television and at conferences and organizations around the country.

Over the years John has taught thousands of students and trained hundreds of teachers. He contin-ues to travel across the U.S. and throughout the world, including Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and the Caribbean, where he conducts workshops for students and teachers of all levels.

Namaste (continued)

I asked her to start assisting me in the classes. I remember one snowy night, when I drove down from Thurmont, where I Iived at the time. The snow came down in great, pillowy clumps. The drive took much longer than usual, but eventu-ally I arrived at the church in Bethesda where I held class; Liz arrived shortly thereafter. (She was Betty in those days.) We waited. No one showed up for the first class, which usually had about 25 people in it. We waited through the entire class, because there was a second class that followed. No one came to the second class, either. Liz was the only person with the dedica-tion and commitment to come out to class in such intimidating weather.

Liz was the first teacher other than me to teach at Unity Woods. After several years of apprenticing with me, Liz began teaching at Unity Woods in 1984. I started Unity Woods in 1979, so Liz’s history with Unity Woods IS the history of Unity Woods. Over those years, her enthusiastic love for yoga attracted a large and loyal following of students devoted to Liz and her powerful teach-ing. Her classes are legend.

But the one guarantee in life is change, and so the time for Liz to take her life and practice to a different place has come. She retired from teaching this fall. I know her students will miss her terribly, and I know that Liz will miss them even more. I treasure the unique and invaluable presence she has brought to Unity Woods and to my life. There is only one Liz Marx. She will always be in my heart.

A note from Liz for her students:

Fo r m y d e a r b e a u t i f u l s t u d e n t s , After 30 years of teaching yoga, I have come to one of the most difficult decisions in my life. I am taking my leave of teaching. I honor that you have come to me as your yoga teacher for so long. I will never forget you! Please continue with this beautiful path of yoga, for I myself am deepening in practice.

I love you and bow to each one of you. Liz

STUDIO NEWS

Unity Woods' faculty members are experiencing many transitions this winter. See the class schedule for some resultant changes.

Liz is retiring from teaching. Join us at the holiday party to wish her well and celebrate her 30 years with Unity Woods. See page 3 for a note from Liz to her students.

Mary is taking a partial leave of ab-sence, teaching just one class this winter, as she continues to reshape and reorganize her life after the un-timely passing of her husband, Gus.

Jill will take the winter session off and other teachers will cover her classes.

Terence will share his classes with other teachers, taking some time away for in-depth Rolfing training.

Laurel Goeke joins our faculty, teaching the Teen Yoga class. She is an experienced teacher who has apprenticed with John for awhile, and we're excited to welcome her!

John has been busy curating the Smithsonian exhibit Yoga: the Art of Transformation, where Lori and Doerthe have also participated, offering yoga classes in relation to the art. John meanwhile, has been appearing at gala events and giving interviews in print and online. For details of his recent activities see unitywoods.com.

Unity Woods is delighted to con-gratulate Linda McR who passed her initial Iyengar Yoga Teacher assess-ment (and is already preparing for the next one!), and Doerthe, who also passed a new assessment level and is now certified as an Interme-diate Junior I Iyengar Yoga Teacher.

ASANA (POSTURE)Gentle classes are for students who are less flex-ible, not so strong, have a particular limitation, or would prefer a more slowly paced, less rigor-ous class. May be joined at any time.

Level I classes introduce beginning students and students new to Unity Woods' approach to the fundamentals of posture and breath.

Level I/II classes are for students who have completed Level I and prefer a gradual transi-tion to Level II. This level is also ideal for those with previous yoga experience who are new to Unity Woods.

Mixed Levels is for students in Level I/II and up. Modifications will be made according to Level and/or need.

Level II classes are for students who have com-pleted the introductory (Level I) course. The basic poses are refined with an emphasis on all the standing poses. Inverted poses (headstand, plow and shoulder stand) are introduced.

Level II/III classes are for students firmly es-tablished in their practice and ready to move beyond the basics.

Level III classes are for students with previous Iyengar training who are strong in all the basic poses and can do headstand, shoulderstand and plow with confidence.

Advanced Asana classes are offered periodically and are limited to students who meet the listed prerequisites for each topic. See "Workshops and Special Events" on pp. 4–5 for this session’s class.

Course DescriptionsSPECIAL CLASSES Teen Yoga, for ages 11–17, helps students strengthen and stretch, gain self confidence and learn to relax deeply. Yoga training in ado-lescence builds a foundation for a stress free, happy, healthy life!

Seniors’ Yoga, a gently paced class designed specifically for seniors, approaches asanas in ways that enhance strength, suppleness and balance. May be joined at any time.

Back Care, for those with back injuries/condi-tions, focuses on strengthening weak muscles, stretching tight muscles and creating traction in the spine. We correct postural imbalances and use breath awareness to reduce stress and pain. Physician approval recommended.

Yoga and Meditation (Short Course) seamlessly combines two practices which enhance our ca-pacity to appreciate life and weather its storms. Each class includes asana practice plus seated mindfulness practice. Level I/II and up.

PRANAYAMA (BREATHING)Level I affords those interested in working with the breath an opportunity to move beyond the elementary levels incorporated into regular asana classes. Prerequisite: one year of study and practice of asana in the Iyengar method.

Level II, III and IV classes are for students who have completed the preceding levels.

Level V classes are strictly for students who have completed Level IV or have received extensive Iyengar training in pranayama elsewhere.

Level VI classes are for students who have exten-sive Iyengar training and have been practicing digital pranayama for two years or more.
