Welcome.“Who’d have thoughtthat when I returned astage prop to Unity

Theatre it would be the start of 32 years of an unpredictable roller-coaster of an adventure!

This is the last season I willprogramme but it is not a nostalgia trip. I have tried to make it representative of the diversity, innovation, ambitionand quality of contemporary work that audiences have grown to expect over my time.

There’s a healthy crop of commissions – so a tad of legacy - and affords a second opportunity to work with innovative producers FUEL.

To all those, far too numerousto mention, who have been involved in the Unity story overthe past three decades, a hugeand unqualified thank you for your generosity in allowing meto play with my big toy. I hopeyou enjoyed, and continue to enjoy playing too!”

Graeme Phillips

In 2014 Unity’s Artistic Directorof 34 years, Graeme Phillips, annouced his retirement.

Graeme trained at Central Schoolof Speech and Drama before going on to workat Ipswich Arts Theatre, Dukes

Theatre in Lancaster before arriving in Liverpool in 1982 to help to setup Lunchtime Theatre. It was while returningprops to Unity Theatre that he found himself enter Unity and has not left since.

He become Artistic Director in the early 1990s, presided over 2redevelopments transforming a leaky-roofed old synagogue into a state-of-the-art small-scale theatre that is an asset to both the city and theatre.

Core to his leadership has beenhis unerring support of new artists, including the acclaimedTold By An Idiot, Improbable and writers Jeff Young and Robert Farquhar.

Graeme has a great eye for spotting clever, disruptive, thoughtful

shows. We’ve spent 20 years together on the unity rollercoasterand I wouldn’t swap a minute.

Well, ok, maybe a few, but the highlights have been mighty andI’ll miss those moments when wego ‘bloody hell, I think we’ve gota good idea here!’

The amazing shows on our stage are just a small part of what we do. Our participation projects engage thousands of young people, we’ve an industry leading trainee programme, an acclaimed Youth Theatre and community gun crime projects. That’s just a few of the great things we do!

behind the scenes.

Trainee Technician SchemeSophie Brown is Unity’s sixth trainee technician. She writes about her experience so far.

It’s been almost six weeks since I started as the Trainee Technician and the amount I have learnt so far has beenbeyond any of my expectations. I firstheard of the position when I was in myfinal year of University studying AppliedSports Psychology I already knew then that I wanted to pursue a completely different career path after graduation.

I had worked at Unity before for Homotopia events and I’d been getting as much experience as possible, at the Royal Court Liverpool,Liverpool Empire, The Epstein, The Black-E and I had the pleasure of operating lights for a show at the Edinburgh Fringe festival.

When I heard of this position I knew that I really wanted it, it was a perfectopportunity to learn about technical theatre and gain hands on experiencewithin the field, meet new people and open the door to a career in the industry.

The staff have been amazing, they are very friendly and hardworkingthere is also a sense of fun throughout the whole building. I have worked closely with Phil (Technical Manager) and Julie (Senior Technician) and they both are excellent teachers, very patient and explain things clearly to me.

In just six weeks I’ve learnt all the names of the lights (I’m quite proudof that!), how to rig lights, patch lighting and sound, cut and changegels, the basics of operating the lighting desk, time management fora get in/get out and health and safety.

I’ve now run my first show (Jack and the Beanstalk), I really enjoyedthe show and the experience of being in control of lighting with theguidance of Phil. The main thing I have learnt so far is to make surethat the finished product is of a very high standard to meet Unity butalso the performers requirements by working as part of a close team. I’m very excited for what’s next!
